Also you were talking about momentum changes and direction changes, in T:A the main way to alter direction in routes was rock bouncing, is that simply not a thing in this engine or do we not really know enough about the maps yet? I’m not sure how OG tribes fans liked rock bouncing, but for me it was easily the most entertaining and fun concept in T:A that showed so much skill expression when running routes. I think the reason 12v12 felt fine is because most of the people had no idea what they were doing and were just skiing around doing nothing. Once the game gets polished and people learn how to play it, the map will undoubtedly be too small for 12v12, it will be chaos.
Might sound weird, but I think a lot of us cappers that would dominate the flag or rabbit it pissed off a lot of the devs and they are trying to nerf capping specifically, which is really sad. The thing about cappers is that it's kind of a single-player experience that other players don't engage with. You either have the entry speed necessary to be untouchable or you don't. Capping speed keeps the game from turning into a cap race where no one else actually _does_ anything.
Honestly the devs should add more countermeasures to cappers like you, such as prism mines or a deployable barracade or something. There's not a whole lot that can be done to stop you or defend against you and you guys can end the game so quickly. I love the idea of a condensed arena for 5v5, it provides a competitive niche that the larger arenas don't, BUT, there's something so magical about the moments of isolation when skiing across the empty expanse of a vast arena, and zoning in on the combat zone that floats around each base, and that's something that the condensed, competitive, 5v5 version doesn't offer. I don't see why Tribes 3 can't do both. Like, we don't just have to pick ONE map/player-count style, we can have a 5v5 queue with smaller maps, and a 16v16, 32, ect queue for the bigger maps.
I remember firstly installing tribes ascend when I was younger. I played for a couple of months and I loved it. Then I got news it will get shut down. I was devastated. I NEED to scratch that itch again
I will forever be chasing the feeling of being a LD on coms in the OGL in my teens as my first taste of REAL gaming. Another highlight was being accused of hacking when crushing in arena. I still have a CD with the game and all the scripts I used on it. On momentum, tribes also had beacon dropping that you could use to rapidly stop, or launch yourself straight up.
You touch on a very good point in the start of the video when you speak for the average community gameplay for tribes 1 and 2 being much more casual with the example of your friend rushing for duels. I think another part of which made those games so memorable were the modded servers, I especially played on annihilation or meltdown more than anything in tribes 1. Truly doubt that Erez is going to give us that capability and go in a direction for e sports which will make the game fail. Tribes is supposed to be fun.
From a distance I'm kinda just not sure what separates this from Midair 2. Any time a company shows off a "super early alpha" it tells me that in their eyes it's not actually all that early, and the final product will be significantly less different than you'd hope it to be. I get what they're going for with the more limited jets. Typically in Tribes the terrain only matters so much, everyone's just 50 feet above it 80% of the time. I like your point about Quake, though, that everything happening movement-wise in it just feels like a consequence of the physics engine rather than being something hard-coded into the controls.
Please... Heavy "Defense"? I was an unstoppable wrecking ball of death if the enemy generator was online. If I didnt die destroying the generator my appetite was hardly sated as I went for assets like turrets and mines. Just keep going like a feral beast until I have finally been felled.
Gg nerd! Nice nitron! Lights are absolutely better at rabbiting and it is sinfully fun. The drag for lights keeps you around 200 speed whereas mediums are slowed down to about 160. Tried to only rabbit when both bases were owned by enemy veterans, and otherwise went straight for the cap
After the modded hosts came out I never went back to original release. I think it was annihilation that mostly played. Where could move blast walls over laser turrets. That's the game I'd want updated
No, they should remake Tribes 2 with updated graphics and physics. Asset management felt like it mattered more in that game, since there were six vehicles, one a mobile base, turret barrels, satchel charges, needing to actively deploy sensors to see the enemy coming. There was genuine strategy behind the anarchy. I wanna see a Tribes 2+Tribes Ascend hybrid with the best of both games.
Glad to see someone else feels this way. I was a HUGE tribes 1 player and played it forever. I couldn't get into any of the other tribes games after that, but this new Tribes 3 gives me a lot of Tribes 1 feels while missing some core things that I think would make it so much better like more reason to actually defend a base and generator.
@1:45 What you said here is the essence of the magic of Tribes. Sure there is competitive play but you get the most player base from casual players who come in and don't want to be bombarded with rules. Tribes 3 doesn't feel right. Just remake Tribes 1 with unreal engine 5. I agree with a lot of you arguments.
Once Ascend died I eventually found pubg, then there was Hunt: Showdown and I enjoyed my time but the last 2/3 years I am over the way devs encourage shitters who want to sit in building not moving for most of the game hoping you will walk past their crouched ads one shot weapon. I miss the the pure competitive focus where you dont get rewarded for not playing the objective and being active in the game generally......You are irellevent if you play that way in tribes, I look forward to it. I hope tribes 3 takes some inspiration from Legions Overdrive with down jets, it was a superior movement system in my experience, it required just as much skill for top speeds but made getting your initial speed easier.
Pubg and Hunt are riddled with cheaters. All games have cheaters but BR's are the worst for them. Every match you will have someone wall hacking/aim botting.
I wonder if they wanted people to be on the ground more because its easier for new people to hit people, MAing is hard. Same with the ground ski acceleration, makes it easier for new people to keep up. I guess whatever helps bring in new blood...
They need to change the maps with different game modes / player counts. So like 5v5 tourney mode servers deletes turrets, closes generator entrances, disables player defense tech or w/e the game ends up having.
Tribes 5v5 limitations always sounds like such a buzz kill. It's always been funny to me having loved T2 base, classic, & all the wild mods. Tribes to me is 24v24 or 32v32 with all the bells and whistles. Seems that speed and competition are what the devs gravitate towards.
@@JohnKerbaugh That's why seperating the different playstyles into completely different modes and maps is necessary. They didn't want to do that with Ascend on the assumption that it would split the player base and pub players would never get into competitive because they would be fundamentally different. They would look at competitive video and not see the game they enjoy and just tune out. But in the end, shoving them both into the same ruleset left neither player really satisfied.
@@pentasticboom6018 I agree they don't belong together. I don't agree that they belong in the same game. I think the competition folks want an aerial combat CTF with high skill only mechanics. I think most of the people would much rather have a much more chaotic creative but strategic cluster f of a game. I don't think you can balance for one and then add the other. They're very different games.
I think much of my reaction to everything since Vengeance has been a long this line of thinking. The maps are too small. The balance if there is any is built for small maps. There's just not enough there to sink into.
Loved T1 but I was a so-so player. I liked just hanging out in loose games over real matches. Loved the Ultra mod but I liked other non-Ultra ones. People would come to the Ultra servers and said it took no skill. So, we thought they would tear up the map, nope. They got their ... handed to them until they rage quit, lol. I just never got into "skiing" but understood why it was popular. I adopted broadband internet in 98 so that helped 😁 I got a lot "nice pings" after a game, sorry. I was in FU for a little while with Nurse and Jucking Ferk.
I loved the base gameplay and generator room fights of Tribes Ascend a lot, but it also felt kind of disconnected from what's going on outside the generator rooms. So i suppose i'm not mad if they don't add a lot to it, but instead make the base assets more exposed to improve that aspect. What i'd instead really want to see is more stuff in the midfield, like a third main king-of-the-hill-like objective that the teams can fight over that has a global effect on the map and could give one team a slight advantage while the control the objective.
I think all that will come down to map making. In Tribes 2 there were some maps that had controllable center objectives. There were maps with generators deep inside the base, while other maps had generators that were more easily accessible. Having the variety and depth is great and what makes the game great.
The game is a bit more casual BUT tribes in general is so hard to get into and the skill ceiling is so insanely high that even if it's toned down it's still tribes.
Just randomly came across the listing on steam, crazy that I came across it within the hour of release! I've played all these games, loved them all including the Ps2 game. My favorite though was Renegade mode in the first Tribes. Also, with the recent success of AC, I wonder if we'll get a new Starsiege tie-in! Fuck!
Im so damn happy just to see a new Tribes game fill in the huge gaping hole where Ascend used to be in my heart. I've played alot of Ascend up until hirez abandoned it, and after playing Rivals abit, i found i havent lost any of my skill, it genuinely feels like im playing fucking Tribes Ascend again, though abit less because of no Team Deathmatch and I've yet to find the infamous Fusion Mortar god player that is Broadsyde (Anyone who's played enough Team Deathmatch in Tribes Ascend will DEFINATELY know who Broadsyde is. His skill with that fusion mortar was second to none, to the point where I never forgot him. Even tried mastering his technique with the mortar, failed miserably and thats how he earned my respect.)
Different gravity on different maps is a fun idea but that kills most new audience. Making the rules to a core gameplay mechanic in this series change so regularly would steepen the learning curve too much. This series is already really niche as is and this iteration won't last long if they can't pull in enough people fast enough especially since this one (last I heard) won't be free to play.
Starsiege Tribes and Tribes 2 veteran, so vanguard of the vets here: fall damage was and should be a thing, not knowing how to ski and fly properly is part of the learning curve. And honestly after hearing your thoughts on the turrets it sounds to me more like they are harkening back to the real tribes games instead of the candy coated follow-ups. I might actually be excited.
The most solid player base is actually competitive players. A few months were populations are high in pubs doesn’t last. pugs have always maintained a solid population . Hundreds of people still played tribes ascend. And hundreds of people are playing this on the daily. I don’t know why people keep saying only 100 people play lol- And it’s not about who makes the game it’s about us and we are the community and this is what is here now . But until someone want to you better prove it :)
A "small" (for Tribes) 5v5 CTF mode seems like a good direction. Small team sizes are _critical_ if they want to push the esports direction, and the skill depth of Tribes has always been extremely well-suited to that. Otherwise, I enjoy tons of larger-scale FPSes (Battlefield, Planetside), so I'm not against that. But that game definitely won't ever take off in a competitive sense (Planetside's "competitive" pushes over the years have been laughably bad), and it definitely needs a lot of sub-objectives to supplement or completely replace the CTF mechanic (CTF is one dude with one flag, and so having that be 1/32nd of your team is horrible design, but if it's 1/5th your team it works better).
I got introduced to tribes with tribes ascend, I loved it. But it never got to the point where it minted, as the developers dropped it prematurely. And i've heard Prophecy games (which basically is Hi-Rez in a new jacket) already dropped the game. 🥴
The grappler to change direction swing around buildings is what made Tribes for me fun to play...after reomoval in favo for newbs and "pro" players with their "own"set of rules like (no groundpound"...that's when it went downhill for me...
Played Starsiege for 10 years, only one I ever played... can we please just get a 1:1 remake. Best damn game ever made. I miss engineering class and creating focefield/turrets along with normal CTF. Game was very versatile
The more players and chaos the better to grow a community. And an elite mod with high rank in 5v5 is where the competitive can reside. There should not be locks on specific weapons to class. Damage can be the limiter.
Tribes is my first FPS love, I've spent thousands and thousands of hours in Tribes and everything about this I dislike. Tiny teams, tiny maps, graphics literally copy-pasted from Ascend. It feels like a cheap cash-in, Tribes for CSGO players. I've never understood why, especially in the Ascend community, we listened to this tiny sub-set of supposed 'pro' players who wanted to make it Quake or TF2, not Tribes. Tribes is bases. Tribes is vehicles. Tribes is HD keeping your gens up. Tribes is TMs maintaining defenses. Tribes is your dedicated Shrikers chasing down cappers. This doesn't deserve having the Tribes brand attached to it.
I've been messing around in T3 playtest yesterday and today and the maps are just too small. Can't set up routes. I guess the point to _NOT_ go fast.. So what's the point?
I'm hopeful that a lot of that stuff will eventually get added. Tribes 3 is far from perfect or my ideal Tribes experience. But it's still Tribes. I'm over of the moon to have the community reinvigorated and have a fresh new experience to jump into.
Just take the Tribes 2 (before classic mod", clone it exactly as it was by its rules, mechanism, damage values, speed settings and do same for vehicles and buildings and all equipment etc. And implement it in the Unreal 5 engine. And specifically include the Tribes 2 Torque engine idea of rough terrain that had lot of hard edges where wanted not to make them smooth (it was all up to map creator). As that was the most fun part as when you were skilled, you could perform a 180 degree turns from specific slope without any impact damage. It was basic geometry and physics, and you really threw up most flag chasers and duelers as they had no idea how to actually use the terrain and your energy management to gain major upper hand for even 2x longer air time and better maneuverability and flying 2-3 times higher than they ever could with any disk jump, just using physics.
Removing inheritance feels weird but makes certain shots much easier (hitting a stationary target while moving fast) and probably feels more intuitive to new players. I do feel like rather than a slider configured at spawn/in options, there should maybe be a way to turn it on and off in the middle of a fight.
its gonna be more Tribes LT and the same 20 people playing it locked in a pickup game rather than going back to like t1/t2 and making a slow and floaty splashy rapey superfluous game that people can acktchually play and then mod into light tribes.
here’s all my opinions about a game that’s not finished in early access :). Wait till the game is done. Mechanics work perfect what’s in the game works perfect . The only issue here is there’s not much and that’s the problem people have . but as a person who’s played every single tribes, his whole life - if we did not have tribes three, you would have nothing. And without this game, you would have no tribes at all . All the hard-core people that said they were pro-tribes where are they now? Where someone making their own tribes that meets all the requirements that this doesn’t ? No one not at all not even you :)
mass market appeal is sadly never going to happen. unless they put colorful shiny purchasable skins then the zoomers will flock to it. then they will leave because it's not a braindead simple game.
Now the real question, the real deal... will grappler be back just like Tribes Vengeance :D or will Tribes 3 be a boring and annoying mess like Tribes Ascend was.
Tribes can't work if it tries to be e-sports focused. Zero reason the game can't have 5v5, 12v12, 64v64, 32v32v32v32, whatever. Absolutely, the in-house map development can focus on small squad play, since that just needs to be tighter to work. But for me, Tribes just isn't Tribes without goofy homemade maps on user servers with modded gear and weapons. Focused 5 and 12 side play is an _emergent_ outcome of that original custom server ecosystem. But players never lost any love for the big janky messes. And Steam Workshop has proven that mods and user servers can keep a decent-size player base around for ages.
Tribes 2 is what they need to go back too, bit bigger maps with vehicals and a map editor, they need a map editor
Exactly this. Plus high res textures and updated graphics.
I reckon they should test the gameplay using recreations of classic tribes maps. those maps were good for a reason...

The best game would be if they remade Tribes 1 with updated graphics. Done. Can't beat it.
@@csalazar1230 I'd be happy to defend if given decent tools to do so. I sure miss the mod that had a way to move blast walls over the small turrets
give every weapon a primary and secondary fire with 0% and 100% inheritance, debate over
Getting the Mongoose dust driving out of the area to this one jump miles out of the play area
Yea physics seems floaty next to even ascend. That and map terrain could be more interesting. Hope they try to nail those two sooner than later.
Agreed. I wouldn't mind seeing the gravity up by 10 to 20%
@8:00 lol, you basically described my game ;)
Go on.....
Nice to see your thoughts Fishstix. -RW
0wnj0o here. Is T3 worth playing? Is it any better than Midair?
I wonder if they wanted people to be on the ground more because its easier for new people to hit people, MAing is hard. Same with the ground ski acceleration, makes it easier for new people to keep up. I guess whatever helps bring in new blood...
Very interesting thoughts! Are your streams on youtube or twitch or elsewhere?
ima be honest if this game doesnt launch free to play it will literally never pull more than like 500 concurrent players
They need to change the maps with different game modes / player counts. So like 5v5 tourney mode servers deletes turrets, closes generator entrances, disables player defense tech or w/e the game ends up having.
not a bad idea - or perhaps, smaller maps simply never allow for that kind of thing
Tribes Aerial Assault on ps2 was the only one I’ve played before 3. And it. was. amazing. Please bring back the vehicles. They were a blast.
I think we all hope vehicles make a return in T3 eventually. I'm enjoying the game as is though!
fantastic analysis
think i remember u from ascend. my handle was Ak1t0
The game is a bit more casual BUT tribes in general is so hard to get into and the skill ceiling is so insanely high that even if it's toned down it's still tribes.
What platform is this on? I remember when it was on ps2
PC
Just randomly came across the listing on steam, crazy that I came across it within the hour of release! I've played all these games, loved them all including the Ps2 game. My favorite though was Renegade mode in the first Tribes.
Also, with the recent success of AC, I wonder if we'll get a new Starsiege tie-in! Fuck!
One can hope so!
Even tried mastering his technique with the mortar, failed miserably and thats how he earned my respect.)
same, so glad to have tribes back in my life!
They're gonna charge 30 dollars for this.... if they think that's gonna work than i don't know what to say.
Tribes 2 renegade mod. Also tribes vengeance grapple ❤. Bring it back. Buckler so fun
It's honestly gotten so much better than the gameplay you see in this video. It's really taking shape. Give it a go!
The most solid player base is actually competitive players. A few months were populations are high in pubs doesn’t last.
pugs have always maintained a solid population . Hundreds of people still played tribes ascend. And hundreds of people are playing this on the daily.
I don’t know why people keep saying only 100 people play lol-
And it’s not about who makes the game it’s about us and we are the community and this is what is here now .
I don't think T1 with better graphics is going to be successful in the modern day. that said, anything would be better than T3's current launch :'(
The more players and chaos the better to grow a community. And an elite mod with high rank in 5v5 is where the competitive can reside. There should not be locks on specific weapons to class. Damage can be the limiter.
thundersword bomber, fully crewed.. or im not interested
Stand-off could be fixed with a laser sniper rifle
tribes with prox vc sounds fun
I hope they have some new ideas for the franchise, if its just a bog standard reboot it will be over in a year or two like previous reboots.
I do feel like rather than a slider configured at spawn/in options, there should maybe be a way to turn it on and off in the middle of a fight.
tribes vengeance is the only way to go if you have skill
fall damage makes no sense in tribes 3 as there is no HP regen...
If you didn’t play fallen empire legions or legions overdrive you’re missing out on the direction the tribes community went after tribes kinda died.
Legions was fun. I didn't play it too much but enjoyed what I did.
its gonna be more Tribes LT and the same 20 people playing it locked in a pickup game rather than going back to like t1/t2 and making a slow and floaty splashy rapey superfluous game that people can acktchually play and then mod into light tribes.
New tribes game you say, haven't played in a long time
Check it out, it's cheap and worth the time to see if you like it
here’s all my opinions about a game that’s not finished in early access :).
The beta for tribes 3 felt off, something is wrong with it. Why are the ps2 games better?
its getting better week over week, give it time
tribes 2 use havoc and mortar the bases
64 vs 64
Buuuut 6v 6 or less makes sense in game modes like arena
I think giant game modes are awesome for Pubs! Would like to see at least 16v16
mass market appeal is sadly never going to happen. unless they put colorful shiny purchasable skins then the zoomers will flock to it. then they will leave because it's not a braindead simple game.
I disagree. Look at The Finals and how well is doing. It league of legend for that matter.
@@omgitsfishstix dude cmon those games are nothing like tribes.
@@omgitsfishstixThe Finals is average at best. Its brain slop that has little to no skill. Microtransactions hell and zoomers easily consume it
Starseige Tribes was the best. Idc what anyone says.
I'm with you man. Fav game of all time.
Shazbot! Saw there will be a new Tribes, but devs seem to make all the wrong decisions..
I got into tribes back when ascend was a thing but man hearing its just 'hirez in disguise' anyway makes me sad.
At least they're listening and responding to our feedback. The games improving a lot. So I have faith.
@@omgitsfishstixyeah I hope its not a shitshow i miss playing tribes dude
whoever said they wanted fall damage in this game is literally brain dead.
Now the real question, the real deal... will grappler be back just like Tribes Vengeance :D or will Tribes 3 be a boring and annoying mess like Tribes Ascend was.
Id love to see the grappler make a return
Bring back creating your own Skins!
In % how similar is it to Ascend?
Looks like a copypasta :/
Physics are very different! It's much faster paced. I prefer it.
Base.
Tribes TAC
Tribes 2 best one
Tribes 1 was the best tribes
It might be time to come out of retirement. : )
