Skaloti Gorge 2023

Our first hike of the year, actually it has been a long time since we went hiking with the Chania Hiking Club. Hope to enjoy many hikes this year. We met at the normal meeting place to catch the bus in Chania. One big and one small bus so maybe 60 people went on the hike. We drove out towards Hora Sfakia on the south side of the island and then took smaller roads to the start of the hike. The hike was very easy for the first 6 or 7 kilometers as we hiked along a dirt road and then when we went off the road to get into the gorge it was many switchbacks as we descended about 800-900 meters (almost a 3000 feet). It took about 2 and a half hours to go only 2 kilometers down the canyon. It was a little difficult on the knees and toes but was a wild beautiful gorge. It was a beautiful day as the video shows. The trail is marked with blue paint on the rocks every once in a while. Could be a little better marked. We got a couple jars of local honey at the village of Skaloti and it tastes great.
