      if you think of an alternate version of pretty much anything. it probably exists. you can get bass flutes, saxophone, trumpet, etc. the list is endless. most of time it's just a huge version of the instrument. ever heard of a double bass? well, they even have octobass's. they are about 8 feet tall.

      it's not really a bass ukulele, ukuleles are tuned to gCEA this is tuned to EADG. a bass ukulele would sound like a regular uke but an octave down, like a bass guitar is the tuning of a guitar but an octave down. this is basically just a smol acoustic bass

    • @FxdGearQueer
      @FxdGearQueer Год назад +13

      @@aquarius5264 Not sure if gCEA necessarily defines what an uke is. Traditional aDF#B comes to mind, or baritone tuning, slide, etc. If it's smol and has 4 strings, it's an uke in my book.

      This is really the defining feature of his playing. Lots of people are technical marvels but their compositions lack musicality. Lots of people can write a good hook, but they're lacking in the broad vernacular necessary to develop those ideas. Charles can do both and it's super refreshing.

      I've never tried a U-bass, but I've played a few acoustic basses and they put out plenty of sound.
      I think the most impressive was a Martin I found in a guitar shop in Springdale, Arkansas. They had a little room off to the side with a display of several guitars, but this gigantic Martin bass was right in the center. I walked up and gently plucked the E string. The sound filled the entire room.
      (I then backed off and didn't touch it again because I saw the price tag. But it sure sounded nice!)

      A brief search turned up one bass model currently manufactured: the BE-16 for $2300. I'm not sure if this is the same model.
      I want to say the one I saw was more than that, but I can't remember. That would have been early 2001.

    Clearly Charles can play nearly any bass (or bass like/symmetrically tuned) instrument at virtuoso levels. This is well established, and proven every week with these videos where he's astounding us with how well a drop B tuning on a left handed short scale acoustic bass strung with piano wire can sound. NOT HYPERBOLE: I can't sit here and name a bassist who I think is actually better than Charles... and I mean, I don't think I could make a case for Victor Wooten being better than Charles, based on sheer ability. OK, so, given this... when and how does Charles get the sort of recognition and payoff (and yes, I'm talking monetary remuneration too) that he deserves? We're basically looking at a musician who is standing on the summit of Everest with his given instrument. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of "fame and wealth helicopter" that swoops down and picks you up when you reach this sort of pinnacle of ability? How is Sufjan Stevens not on the phone saying "Hey, let's do an album together!" How can anyone be this good at a thing, and not be mega world famous?

      There’s no doubt that he’s the best at what he does. His compositional and melodic intuition is just absurdly beautiful as well. One look at his face when he talks says it all - he’s a very happy guy. Sometimes that helicopter takes you somewhere not nearly as satisfying as the top of Everest having climbed it all on your own (well, with a major assist from a certain monotoned slapper from Italy)

    Have you ever considered composing a symphony or an album intended to be listened to as a whole?
    Given what you are able to create with layers of bass alone, I would love to hear what your brain is capable of producing when playing across a full orchestra, or discovering what a Charles Berthoud prog album feels like!

    Dear Charles, I have been wanting to tell you for a while how you have inspired my son. He's been watching you for a year or 2. He's 10 years old. We bought him this exact bass for Christmas last year because he saw you playing it. I subscribe and we make a point to watch together each time you make a new video. There was a time when he fell outside and scraped up his leg/was bleeding pretty badly. He was inconsolable and I felt so bad for his pain... with some quick thinking, I pulled up one of your videos and that helped him calm down. Thank you for making quality videos that are fun and mostly wholesome enough for all my family. He and his 7 yr old sister lovingly refer to you as, "Bass-E- Boy" 😀🤷🏻‍♀️🤣
