- In-depth analysis of Homelander from the Boys.
When I first started watching The Boys; I thought Homelander was an absolute monster with superpowers. But as the story went on, that wasn't exactly what I saw. The more I watched the show, the more I realized he's way more complex than that. Is Homelander an allegory for real-life leaders? What will do Homelander in The Boys Season 4?
Let's take a closer look.

What's fascinating about Homelander is how he could have been a total Superman, a true hero, if he'd just had a better childhood and decent parents. His story is like a warning about how a greedy system can twist anyone into something monstrous.
He is exactly what superman would be if he grew up in real world America
The only mistake is he wouldn't have to hide who he really is
@@northleedspoppano for Superman he was raised by 2 loving people he had troubles back in smallville but he never let it get to him because he had two loving parents. You saying if he grew up in real America Superman would be like homelander I don’t think so homelander was crazy from the start because of vought if homelander had someone who actually loved him then he could have turned out like Clark but nope homelander let the fame and crazy thoughts get to him because he is mental and wants fame Superman doesn’t want fame or any recognition he just wants to help out any way he can.
That's not...entirely true. You can come from a broken and truamatic childhood and still be a decent or a good human being. I guess the difference is, Homelander grew up in a lab and was a test tube baby. But the nature vs nurture argument could be a good one too. I mean, Homelander could've already been that *type* of person from the jump, but having no parental figures just made it worst. Superman on the other hand had comic issues where he grew up around other people, and still turned out to be a good person in the end. Even then, having a great childhood, a perfect life doesn't mean a person still can't go out and do horrendous shit. There can be underlying urges people have and let it take over.
I think you've missed the point. No one with a human mind could have such powers without THE BOYS being a far more realistic depiction of them than SUPERMAN.
And no one with any unique gifts could escape being groomed by the corporations.
If Jesus came back Nike, Apple and Disney would chasing after him, offering him luxury gifts and flattering him until HE became just another overprivileged celebrity asshole.
@@northleedspoppa the real world america? mf not everyone not gon be evil superman with your description
The only way your description would be accurate is if the mfs that raised that superman is abusive and/or negligent
Also again to your description if that's the case through your description then that superman would be selfish, depressed, and really morally confused but not out right evil
"The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth"
Damn that wuote gave me a bit of chills. Nice
Sounds like an evil person

That's why he is so fascinating as a character, and I think this version of him better than the comics. Childhood trauma is no joke, and it really messes people up. But that doesn't excuse his actions, obviously.
In his head his behavior doesn’t need reasoning. He’s above us mortals. As much as I want him to be ended (brutally due to the nature of the series), but it would be more fitting to take his powers away. Let him die as a mere mortal. Like the ones he thought himself above in the hierarchy of his world status.
@@InfamousCue He's already having issues with this in the current season with his graying hair and enlarged prostate.
@@Koraxus I’m talking in his morale compass, not his immortality. Yes I agree he is coming to terms with aging, and being on the same level as the normal people he judged. I imagine he hates the fact he ages, and will eventually wither away. He’s not “Superman”. He is just a man with a chemical imbalance 😂
Edit: with that being said, that soldier boy experience still lives with him. It could’ve all been gone in an instance.
yeah i hate how ppl try to make his actions justified bc of his trauma. i understand homelander and his trauma is a reason for why he is the way he is instead of an excuse
I'm sick of people talking about shit not justifying action.
If everyone fell for that bs line centuries ago, the people woulda never revolted all the times they needed to, to stop the evil truly creating a nightmare slave world.
This time, they may just win because you people are so compliant.
There's a quote from Manhunter that sums up Homelander pretty well.
"My heart bleeds for him, as a child. Someone took a kid and manufactured a monster. At the same time, as an adult, he's irredeemable."
The world that corrupted him, its the world that comdemend him.
@@JoaoVictor-rg5ixidk they embrace him just fine in the show
Great quote, fits him to a tee
i love how season 4 is actually making lots of characters more sympathetic even homelander
And making the boys less sympathetic. Butcher, Frenchie, and Starlight come to mind
ChildHood trauma is very real. when I was 10 I moved in with my Grandparents coming from Mexico. I was bullied at school for not knowing English and bullied for my looks. At home my grandparents didn't care about any of it and they were extremely strict. I had zero control over my actions or what I would wear. On my weekends I would work all day with my grandpa doing jobs. I hated my childhood because my grandpa thought me how to do things by yelling at me and cursing at me. He would even beat me. Still being a kid I had evil thoughts of getting rid of both of them in their sleep but in the end I didn't let those evil thoughts win and I just carried on with my life. I no longer have a relationship with my Grandparents and haven't seen them in years. To them I will always be a failure. I was warned growing up to never mention any of this to people specially school counselors who I lied to after taking tests for depression to see if I was a normal child. I'll never forget the day my grandpa and I were on a job and I was 11 I was hugging him and he pushed me away hard telling me to F off that I'm no longer a kid and to start acting like a man.
I faced the similar things, I hope you are doing well.
@@sanchitkumar5784My grandfather and uncle was the same way. Always had to bully and abuse me as a way of toughening me up to be a man. No encouragement, no respect, nothing. It was always discouragement, belittling, and disrespect every single day. It didn’t stop until my grandfather died. Then I stopped talking to my uncle and all family members that were cruel to me. I broke the cycle of abuse a long time ago. I sincerely hope you’re doing good these days.
I'm sorry you had to go through that growing up. Your grandparents should have loved and cared about you. I hope you found good people to be a part of your life and they make you happy.
I hope you’re doing well, friend. My grandfather and uncle treated me the same way, claimed it was to toughen me up. All it did was teach me to hate them. Now that they’re both dead, I moved on with my life, found a great woman, and I’m going to make a life with her. I’ll be the exact opposite of them in every way.

Stan Edgar said it best to Starlight. True power isn’t about force it’s about influencing people!
Edgar is talking from the perspective of humans of course.
For a supe like Homelander, influencing people is more of hobby rather than need to get power.
If he wanted to rule the world, he easily could waltz into the White house and kill everyone.
While there is truth to that it is very important people remember that force can end someone’s influence realllllll fast.

It is, but influencing a a herd of sheep will not do much good against a pack of wolves. What is really important is WHO you influence, because you'll need such people who can project force.
5:46 After watching 4x04, that's exactly why and how Vought raised him. Amazing catch, good job!
Best episode of the show imo.
As someone who had a very rough childhood, didn’t have mom or dad, I relate to Homelander. It was actually quite sobering to watch The Boys and see Homelander and see parts of myself in him. It’s disturbing.
The blanket scene is one of my favorites, and his little glimpses of PTSD are relatable as well. Infact, there’s a single moment in my childhood out of the many, that will never leave my brain. As a kid I had a hard time understanding things, and I couldn’t tie my shoes until about 7-8?
Well, I was taken out to one of our chain link fences with a rope, and forced to stand there, in the sun, attempting over and over to tie a bunny ear knot. I couldn’t figure it out, and every single time I couldn’t? I got whooped with that thin little rope. My back and legs were covered in little thin red whelps. Now, as a grown man? I can’t even tie my shoes, or my wives, or daughters without extreme anxiety, and very very strong irritability.
I use homelander as an example of what can happen if I do not make it a point to care for my mental health. I started noticing how I was being a piece of shit, I noticed the constant need for approval and love. I’ve gotten better as I’ve grown, and learned empathy for others beside myself.
Point being, Homelander is a cautionary tale not only for those in power but even just normal people who weren’t dealt a very good hand in their childhood.
Damm. You are the hero that Homelander should have been.
well i couldnt tie my shoes til i was 19, learned it in the military haha

With how he is turning on Ryan he’s definitely “the” villain. The Ryan connection was the only redemption path he had and he’s throwing that all away so far lol
Nothing is ever going to be enough for homelander he’s all hollowed up inside nothing is ever going to fill that void not even parenthood and he is not capable of loving anyone when he’s not capable of loving himself
It’s also a realization that Homelander is just broken beyond repair and there’s no fixing him. Not even Ryan can be enough for him. He’s gone beyond the point of no return and he will eventually throw Ryan away.
@@KapayaSiame that is a good way to look at it I was more along the lines of Ryan wasn’t feeding into his dad role and his ego literally can’t handle that. But I think I like this take more. Either way he’s turning on Ryan like ya said. Can’t wait to see how it plays out!!
Because he doesn't really see Ryan as a real person, just an extension of himself.
@@SuperMrDeadpool no it’s actually because he sees Ryan as another version of himself. See how im arguing to the wind? I hope you do
Homelander is also about destroying his own humanity which he feels is an anchor to weakness. He probably still loved Dr. Voglebaum and Madeline Steelwell.
They were in his path of self-destruction.
Notice how Voglebaum was crippled and it was done off screen. He probably gave a speech while hugging and crushing his spine, much like he did to the fake mother figures they hired when he was little.
So when he gets angry about everything, he just destroys things tethered to his humanity. He keeps trophies of things that reminded him of all that as well as a reminder.
Give a baby super powers and then raise him like a lab rat. What could possibly go wrong?
This video and comment section perfectly describe the immense fan reaction after Season 4 Episode 4; And yet this was made before it even premiered.
Fantastic video. Creator absolutely nailed it
0:39 Lines like: "You want forgiveness? Now? After you raised me like, some fucking lab rat?" hit so unbelievably deep that it truly makes me feel sorry for him. Homelander is surrounded by people who pretend to be his friends and I think that were he to find a person who truly cared about him and wasn't using him for their own safety or because they are afraid of him for being a "monster" he could maybe turn himself around. Seriously I don't think since Joker have we had a villain in a story do things that are this despicable and still somehow sympathize with him.
I want to see a good counterpart of Lex Luthor existing in The Boys to counter Homelander.

Homelander should be a warning light to Ryan
why? he isnt wrong. supes are a superior species, to the point where the average human is the equivalent of gnats
@DellikkilleD That's really not the point, though. Ryan is still being raised by a narcissistic monster of a parent with powers, so of course that's the narrative he'll try and preach. Thinking that way is exactly what will get someone to fall down a slippery slope, like Homelander did. It's about compassion, actually using your gifts for a greater purpose than yourself. It's more fulfilling. Because thinking like Homie will get you supremely humbled when you get in a situation, not even being the most powerful person in the world may help you out with. If someone is as mentally fragile as Homelander, they are not going handle that pressure well. Homelander's mindset is a weak one.

So...what I'm getting at is that dictators need therapy?
But in all seriousness everything you've said about homelander was literally confirmed in episode 4, which if you haven't watched I recommend you do because that episode was the perfect way they really showed how far gone he really is now.
Some dictators, others are fine
8:17 is the best part. That's a rather great outlook.
Rather than willing be manipulated the lesser of any evil is challenging. At least if you do, you have a fighting chance.
Episode 4 of this current season was honestly one of the best in the entire series IMO because somehow, after showing viewers all the awful things that Homelander has done and pretty much unanimously leading every fan to wish he would be killed in the series, they still found a way to sympathize him. His line about the anger he felt toward all the laboratory workers for not standing up and saying that it was wrong for them to torture him as a child has stuck with me ever since I heard it.
I binged watched that whole season with my friends and goddamn were we all silent but glad at the ending scene. Seeing homelander finally smile at getting back to his childhood tormentors was something that we needed and that’s including my friend who wishes for his death since season 1.
You know, if you think about and actual pay attention, Homelander is pretty smart, however his pride and his insecurity get in the way of his intelligence.
He's perceptive, manipulative, and sometimes clever, but I definitely wouldn't call him smart. He's incredibly impulsive and never thinks ahead of what he does in the moment. He's responsible for the downfall of vought and widescale distribution of Compound V, which was definitely not a smart move.
I don't know. He's comparatively smart compared to most of the show's characters, but I have a hard time giving him any redeeming qualities when he's basically dug his own grave through a series of impulsive and short-sighted actions.
@@mint.6068 I get what you mean. I was suggesting that if it weren’t for his pride, insecurity, and impulsivity he would have more potential. All his weaknesses make him stupid. I’m not saying he’s brilliant, but like you said has a cleverness at times, and I believe maybe it would shine more without the weakness.
Because even the smartest people if they succumb to pride, insecurity, and impulsivity, therefore being controlled by them, they’re rather stupid. Even Sage, as smart as she may be, clearly has a pride problem too, but is better at controlling it then Homelander. He’s a next level Ego driven maniac.
@@mint.6068 thats called being smart. smart people are impulsive too. hes not smart about EVERYTHING, but hes certainly still smart.
@@mint.6068you can be smart while simultaneously not giving a fuck.
Episode 1 was an excellent example of the Hegalian dialectic.
totality-sublation-negation? how?
Now that i think about it, the people cheering for him might be the worst thing that could happen to him. He thought he was free from being reliant on other's approval, but the fact that they like him for that means he now has another image to uphold. While it is more in line with his actual thoughts, he's still trapped.
3:00 Anthony Starrs Homelander Performance is absolutely Oscar worthy. I havent seen a better Villain Performance yet. Its like hes playing himself. Marvelous
The Boys is such a gripping narrative. By season 4, Homelander and others can publicly do things which would’ve been unacceptable beforehand, because they have so many loyal supporters.
In particular, the killing of a protester by Homelander in Season 3 was really chilling. When one person started cheering, the rest went along, because to not follow what other people do is to not belong to the group.
If had good friends growing up he could have been like superman.
“Antony Starr” BEEN shoulda gotten an Award for his performance
The description of Johnny Ringo in Tombstone also applies to Homelander. He’s got a great big hole, right in the middle of him. He can never kill enough, or steal enough, or inflict enough pain to ever fill it. Homelander needs revenge for being born.
pretty cool video. but about that "vought intentionally raised him like that so he can be always hungry for love" i dont think thats true they know they fucked up and tried to fix it by raising rayn with a mother
edit after 4x04: damn i didnt see that coming
here after watching 4x04, we literally see that's exactly why and how they raised Homelander.
Thing is, I'm pretty sure Vought kept Ryan around because Edgar wanted something he could not only replace Homelander with (like he did with Soldier Boy), but to kill him outright. It's Vought, they don't do shit out of the goodness of their hearts, there's always an ulterior motive. Think about it, they could have just killed Becca to cover up what Homelander did, and Ryan would have probably died with her. But they didn't. They helped her deliver the baby and spent probably millions of dollars constructing a whole fake suburbia for Ryan to grow up in, so that he would grow up with a moral compass and wouldn't get our of control like Homelander did.
@@KnoxCarbontrue it’s not good business to have a mentally unstable manchild with the powers of a god constantly be on the brink of killing millions whenever he has a bad day they couldn’t afford to screw up the only contingency they had against him since he’s immune to anything else humanity can throw at him

Homelander's past doesn't justify his actions, but it definitely explains them.

“Downtown”? Oregon is a state…states don’t have downtowns
The only people I trust with power are those that don't want it.
Love that summarisation about scepticism!
In the industrial age, literacy in natural science (about engines, chemistry, or electricity) was necessary.
In the information age, the one in social science (on the factors and outcomes of people’s actions) is vital.
Toward the AI age, the one for policies (knowledge of the interaction between people & the environment) will
be crucial. That is because we need a comprehensive and balanced understanding to decide what to do.
Very insightful. The worst of these people are heartbroken children in a flashy uniform.
this is a perfect analysis of such a complex character. great job on the video!! you just gained a new subscriber!
He had no human contact as in a connection forming sense. The humans were his observers, not friends, not family. He is a narcissist like a human one. The difference is he is super powered/invincible. He has no consequences for his actions. He knows that. That combined with his hunger for adoration and validation is a scary recipe for destruction.
You basically just explained Frank Herbert’s position when he wrote Dune

If you’re on the red team and I’m on the blue team and you get mad because the blue team is cheating (and we actually are) and the red team isn’t, then according to your logic you’re cheating anyway because you correctly think the blue team is cheating.. the logic you just gave is the logic the cheaters spout

wow you just hit all the points i had in mind with this series, even going parallel with real life person in real time, might i add the word HATRED is a demon that almost with in any human the day we were born, this is probably the inner demon you mention, inner demons spawn themselves and trasfer too, that is why some people use power to harness that hate demon, this kind of narrative had been showcase in almost any movies, series, even cartoon anime i had watch uip to this point, one thing i can example is the naruto ninja war that has drive the narrative even probably to this day in their recent episode, almost everything is about revenge of the antagonist plus the power hunger too to manipulate everything they can, my point is hatred is very powerful once left uncheck may results to horrific outcomes
Very true, thats something I think vinland saga also points out. How people fall into hate to make fighting easier, even if their "enemies" have never wronged them. War should be fought by the leaders, not the soldiers tricked into hating someone that mightve otherwise been their friend. Hate is a very effective tool.

'Homelander is a warning'. I want you to remember that you gave a video this title. Because later on you'll be making a video with a different thing being the a warning.
There is a part in the source material where everything is out in the open and James Stillwell (Stan Edgar in the TV series) references wikileaks by saying that the general public reaction to learning such things is for people to simply say, 'The world works the way I always suspected' and then go on with their lives like nothing happened.
The apathetic nature of humanity to such things is the real warning in The Boys. Humanity's indifference will be the thing that leads to its destruction.

@ibrahimihsan2090 Normal people is correct, but with power, they become something different. The most powerful dictators in history started off with good intentions. Then millions ended up dead under that power. Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely.

The scary thing about Homelander is that there are people who have been exposed to trauma all their lives, and may find kinship with him. We're basically our own enemy, and our depravity often creates people like Homelander. World War II should also serve as an example of someone who ended up becoming a monster and started creating mayhem that literally shook the foundations of Humanity.
But of course, we never learn from it.
Why think about the tragic past of a monster and teach how to avoid it, when you can just call anybody that does anything wrong evil and paint it as if they were just magically like that

Homelander is essentially the archetypal Hollywood actor/actress. Caring (always wants to support a current cause) affectionate, loving and supportive in public gatherings but a horrible depraved monster on the inside. And we see no better example of this than modern Hollywood culture.

Homelander reminds me of what Surge the Tenrec could have become in IDW Comics via Dr. Starline's ambitions to replace Sonic and Tails.
it’s funny how Butcher, soldier boy and homelander all had some interesting relationships with their father, it’s like all they are doing is just trying to prove to their old man that they are worth it that they worth their love.
5:03 I think we can all agree though that, statistically, less childhood trauma equals less sociopathy in society.

Great video I've seen several other videos that were this good diving into the subject. Sadly to say a lot of it will fall on deaf ears because people can rationalize anything to fit their own narrative. So everything you said in this video while true some people will automatically assume you're talking about other People and not them even though they easily fit this category.

The fact that he tried to be the hero everyone wants him to be in first time but failed miserably because of how bad he was raised.
Homelander is such a creep.. thanks for the video btw I've been waiting for this for a long time!
2:30 YOO THEY MENTIONED ME !!!!!!
It is so is sad how the top Vaught lab employees and Stan Edgar experimented on Homelander physically and the way they went about deliberately breaking Homelander’s mind so they could control him from when he was a baby due to the exceptional nature of his superpowers. The way they described getting together all of the top psychologists from around the world working round the clock on creating and exploiting any weaknesses or just emotional vulnerabilities to purposefully break Homelander’s mind and spirit in the hopes that he would be a controllable asset. I imagine Homelander being in a bit like a Pavlov’s dog scenario with Vaught scientists working really hard to control Homelander by training him to have a pathological need for approval, so as he could not break away from their control.
Great video! Keep up the good work🎉🎉
Homelander wasn't simply a creep he was a damaged emotional mess who did not know what he was or is doing just doing it out of the need to feel loved there's no real reasoning or rationale behind it that's why in later seasons he's starting to fall apart because he is all that he needs to be but it's not enough even for him. Alot of people are like that in real life too, tbh they do their best to hide that side of themselves but it comes out eventually.
As someone with a bad childhood I can't say I agree with Homelander...but I 100% understand.
