It's like Japan woke up and said there's a whole generation that wants to have their celica's and preludes back now that the kids are out of the house? 😂
now all we need is a new gt-r!
I am that generation!!
@@blackcow8114not unless it is a manual; the play station EV thing concept was cringe af.
not really.. there are no kids. most of those kids don't know their culture anymore because the japanese mothers have all married foreigners and moved away to the US. The one's that didn't are remaining single in a local economy that does not support children. Japan is having a population crisis and it's being erased by it's own government and foreign influence that constantly commodifies and fetishizes it to the point where it will eventually gentrify and buy it all out until it's gone.
@@blackcow8114aw man you reminded me of how sad I was when the 2025 gtr was a letdown.

Toyota is killing it with the revivals of their 90s sports cars.
Too bad their prices have gotten to the point that people aren't buying as much. Their Tacoma is over 50k now......

I perfer scotties generation of celica that was the best but i had a 2000 toyota solara and it was basically just a reskinned celica and that thing is 25 years old i sold it years ago to someone in my town theyre still driving it around. It was a coup. Toyota made good coups back in the day. I still have my complaints because the solara they would use plastic gears in the seats so if the gears werent cheap the seat wouldnt have malfunctioned for many more years and i sold it because it was hard to fix the seat. Durability is what matters to me. Coups are dope for just running aroind town and the solara was a coup but wed get in it the 4 of us i learned to drive in that car and its back seat was actually impressive compared to what they have today. It was almost a wraparound couch back there you sit back into the back seat it was semi luxurious i really was bumming i sold it. If toyota was still selling the 2000 model year generation solara id buy it brand new. I loved how we rode it until the timing belt busted and for like 850 bucks the mechanic repalced it the water pump etc and it was back on the road in a day because it was a non interference 4 cylinder non hybrid with a traditional 6 speed i think it was 😂 it was great. The steering was so light it made it a great car for the grocery parking lots. My 07 accord v6 had hydrolic power steeri g and jt felt good also but if the wheels werent moving just barely even then the wheel was hard to turn so you had to let of the brake slightly whime reversing and then crank your wheel hard and in the solara i could be not moving a milimeter and i could turn the wheel so easily it made it a very nice car to run errands in and i learned to drive in it. We had v8f150 and it wasnt as quality in terms of leaking oil when it turned 10 and the solara at 25 years old didnt leak oil...
These aren’t even sports cars
@@TheAnnoyingBoss false. The Toyota Solara was it's correlating era's Toyota Camry chassis shortened to be a 2 door. It uses only Camry engines as well. None of them are based on the Celica which uses the ZZ series 1.8s - neither of which were ever in a Camry or Solara. The Celica does have cousins, but they are in the form of the Corolla, the Matrix, and the Pontiac Vibe.
This Toyota renaissance will be studied in a few years. This is crazy.
I have a neighbor with a 2000 Celica that just refuses to die. I see the lining on the roof hanging by a thread, and everything is fading. Still runs perfectly. Love his passion for keeping it running, but I’ll have to ask him if he’ll buy the new one.

Kudos to Toyota and GR for continue making sports cars for the future and listening to the car enthusiast.
Looks like a Camry Coupe (Solara). I hope they don’t botch it in production. I’ve been wanting a decently powered, sporty, PHEV coupe with AWD as a daily commuter, but I don’t think there’s anything like that on the market. This gives me hope for a Honda Accord Coupe hybrid.
Oh goodness why in the hell do you want everything PHEV. You must be really young. Nobody wants that Bs
the new future prelude, which will be on the civic hybrid platform; looks great, should have a little over 200 hp; not a touge car but a fun, sporty, spacious hybrid drive train coupe.
Toyota’s making enough money these days, they can afford to make an affordable 2 door car.
Facts Honda needs to take 📝 they took away coupe accords coupe civics no more s2k new preludes supposedly but hybrid only just like the crx and the civic type r is the only thing i guess thats exciting but it don't compete with the 90s not to mention the sedan version of integras only and no legends🤦one of the reasons i always liked Toyota's over Hondas even though at 1 point I was opposite

The MR2 would probably weigh at least 500 pounds lighter than this, so the 1.6L 3-cylinder is not really a downgrade in performance
we are witnessing, another golden age for toyota
Certainly the golden age of high profits for them
Their golden age of 80 trillion in the asset account means the biggee they are rhe hardee they fall dude. A 1996 corolla is higher quality than a 2024 camry

If they stay away from rebadging BMW's, maybe.
if they stay away from this horrible design language, then maybe, this does not look like a golden age celica at all, it looks horrible
My dad’s Celica is accident prone, dried of oil trillion times. It’s at 240k miles 2000 model year. Still runs like a top.
Starlet looks nice. I hope they offer it with a 6spd manual. Less than $25k, and it would be what the Civic used to be in the 90s for many , an affordable sporty car.
Kirk, Bring back the STARLET!!! The Starlet was a Yaris before the Yaris was a Yaris. 🤩🤩

@@kenhoward3512It has been well established that there is a market for tiny cars in the US.
Sales-wise - and as a daily driver - a new Celica would make a lot more sense to produce than another very-limited-market, 2-seat, MR-2 sports car, or an "S-FR" (especially considering the current GR86).
Celica has always been a pretty sporty car, so the way I see it, it would be more like 86 than the S-FR would. If they don't make it sporty, then that won't be real Celica.
A convertible version of the Celica won’t happen, but what a fit Florida car that would be……
Itll have epa paint and plastic engine itll be an overpriced scam just like every toyota currently for sale. By the time you get through stealership dmv insurance gas its a robbery for basic transportation
Does the Scion tC not count as a Celica? I used to joke that tC stood for Toyota Celica.
Outside box thinking 👆🤔
I remember when I first saw it, it definitely had the vibe of a Celica, maybe just smaller.
I thought the exact same thing back in the day because the TC came out the exact year they stopped making the Celica! I ended up buying a TC because my belief was it was just a Celica. 2 door hatchback just like the Celica.
My neighbor tuned his to over 600hp. This is such an iconic car.
the scion FRS has always been a joint project between toyota and subaru to create a miata competitor , id imagine the SFR is them ending their relationship with subaru and revitalizing that idea through the SFR model
It was a joint project because they wanted to use the boxer motor. It was originally a Toyota only concept. I don't think they have any reason to end the relationship with Subaru. The 86 was already proven to be very successful.
@@BRZguy it also doesnt make sense for them to introduce something to compete with something thats already in their line up. the first generation of vehicles from the subaru toyota partnership went very well, the new generation has been much more problematic.

The celica was winning WRC championships before the Evo and WRX, specifically the ST185 generation where you had they had drivers like Juha Kankunen, Didier Auriol, and Carlos Sainz Sr. It wasn't until TTE was found cheating with a modified turbo restrictor in '95 on the ST205, they then were banned for the rest of the season as well as the fallowing. This allowed the WRX and EVO to get their respective times in the spotlight.
Ok. Ok. Ok. I think I'm losing my MIND!!
You said this would happen.
Owned both a 1976 and 2002 Celica and they were equally economical, reliable and fun to drive. In my opinion killing off the Celica was biggest stupid mistake Toyota ever made after years of building a brand loyalty to that model. I remember those years when GM introduced the Saturn brand and Toyota followed with the Scion brand. The whole idea was to attract a newer younger generation of buyers and I ask you where are those marketing geniuses brands today?
If Toyota can bring back the Celica maybe GM will one day follow suit and revive the Pontiac and Oldsmobile brands which in my opinion again were the best brands GM ever had.
Won’t happen; Bidens plan is to kill the American manufacturers of course and he wants Chinese electrics shipped in. Buicks crossovers are already made in China. The 2-3 smaller ones anyway. Oldsmobile and those will not come back, GM needed to slim down.
Toyota needs to take a page from suzuki lime with the dr650 and just make the 90s celica the exact same way unchanged for decades. Its crazy how i cam buy a 1997 dr650 and buy new parts made new from the manufacturer fpr a 2024 model and the parts are the same. I am atill bummed i wasnt born back before the auto industry got irrational fear of glass lensed headlights
It would be perfectly fine using a prius hybrid engine variant and simply making it AWD for the celica. A lightweight coupe hybrid with around 230hp and instant torque of electric motor would be amazing. plus amazing mpg. This would make it the true wrx rival.
Prius has awd in North America so it could be easily transferred
The new motor they’re talking about was shown just this past Tokyo Auto Salon.
My first car was an '83 Celica.. I loved that little thing.. Wish I still had it.
My first car was an 87 Celica 5 speed. I loved it and regret ever selling it. Last manual I ever drove. Went to a previa when we had our second son ( it was fun getting an infant car seat in the back of the Celica), then a Sienna and now that I'm older...I went to a Lexus ES. My used, '88 Celica ST 5spd was great to me. Drove it from 99K miles to 166K when I gave it away. AC always worked and original clutch.
I had a 1990 Celica. One of my most reliable cars that I have owned.😮
The 2000 solara has this huge cushy wraparound backseat despite being a coup. I learned to drive in that car and under the hood is basicallt the same car it was mechanically strong compared to a lot of junk today
My dad used to have a 1980 Celica GT such a cool car
What a lineup! I hope the Starlet will be available in Europe too 🤞🏻
only if it half of the current price of the current gen2 gr yaris...or else, what's the point?
This would be awesome. I would like a little more fender flare, but looks pretty good.
My very first and favorite car ever! 1995 GT Liftback!! Loved it!
They should use the camry for this but use the 4 cylinder turbo and brand it a celica. Id buy it.
"This could be bigger ".... That's what she said 🤣
I've said it in your s-fr video; there isn't so much space within the s-fr to supra price bracket to include all the cars and such, some of the current ones will he retired;
if they make the mr2 a competitor for the future defunct cayman/boxter platform(70k+), then it will make sense to be higher up in price; the celica could replace the mid-lvl, which would mean a 40 to 60k car and the s-fr will take the space currently occupied by the gr86; the gr yaris will remain as it is because it still needs to be the wrc homologation car for the roads while the gr corolla is the american version of that same drivetrains(engine, gb, diffs);
What I, personally, would love to see is having a coupe body dropped on the gr yaris chassis and drivetrain and call it a celica gt4(or gr4) and have it replace the gr yaris as their homologation car for wrc; not that I don't love the gr yaris..but, having a legacy name on it and a more desirable coupe body could make it even more successful to the general public and driving enthusiasts at the same time.
Toyota mind as well just make the 86 an optional convertible rather than make a whole new car to compete with the Miata. The only problem with the Miata for some is just the livability because of the size.
@BrianEugeneLee-xq2hy I'm in America. It'll always be Miata first.
I was going to say keep it 1.8L turbo, but knowing it’s going to be heavier a 2.0L turbo seems a better choice.
Why dont they just put the camry 2.5 in it so its a nonhybrid naturally aspirated
As an aging car-guy (JDM more partial); your reviews are so refreshing!!! I grew up with most these cars late 80s-90s early 00s! Love the Celica! I would love to see a performance hybrid, 350-400hp with 400 ft-lbs of torque.
I believe that the AWD Celica had 200hp
200 hp is plenty of hp as long as the cars weight is low enough.
So you're telling me Toyota could have 5-6 sports cars in their lineup at the same time? That'd be awesome, but I just don't see it happening. Something has to get canceled.
GR86 maybe. They might stop codeveloping with Subaru.
Supra will not be around for long, IMO
@@Robert-un3cf Yea, if I had to pick one it'd be the Supra. It must kill Mr. Toyota to hear it called a BMW everytime someone talks about it, especially because they're mostly right.
@@faheemabbas3965I don’t think so, people buy a lot of them. I can see the Supra being discontinued soon
probably the s-fr is the replacement for the 86, the MR2 goes to compete with cayman/boxter, while this celica will be in the 40-60k price range; basically, MR2 and celica will replace the supra
It’s coming back! I confirmed it with the Toyota engineer months ago..
Bring back the Tercel! lol
I should be ecstatic but these new cars are literally not affordable, from all this dealership nonsense and resale goblins. if Toyota had a online direct to buyer option for all there performance cars only that would solve that problem and increase sales. As for the Celica this is probably going to be the chassie base for the rumored Lexus two door coupe if that ever happens
Listen, the 80s and 90s people bought sports cars because they were fun to drive. (It’s like a video game company making a video game that’s fun to play, not how much technology and money it took to create) Toyota, just like other car makers caved to yearly regulations, marketing trends and other formats that all manufacturers were doing. This created the boring cars we kinda have had for the past 20+ years. Each car looks the same from each manufacturer and have lost their focus…a fun car to drive that looks awesome. I just bought a GR86 which is amazing, but know there is an end date for the model - which makes it legendary for the brand! But for Toyota to bring back the classics is a great business model; keeping the brands “reputation” and “product” at the forefront every new vehicle conversation(s). I just hope they don’t go too crazy with eco everything and ruin the driving experience from the straight-forward easy to work on Toyota engineering.
That mr2 looks amazing! 👍
Man if I could afford an awesome two door coupe as an extra car for a daily driver!!!
Bring the baby ferrari Mr2 back and I'll buy one if it has a toyota/yamaha engine in it.
Oh wow, I think you’re right about it being a spiritual successor to the Solara. I don’t know how I feel about that. The Celica being basically a GR Camry Coupe. I much rather have the Celica be another model sharing a platform with the GR Yaris but with the 2.0 Inline 4 Turbo.
Yikes, I guess we’ll see.
me too; a celica legacy name bolted on the gr yaris chassis and drive train would be a dream!
While this is good news, still looking forward to the MR2 more, my MR2 Spyder is getting long on the tooth. Also hope the MR2 is roomy enough for someone that is 6'4, the Spyder has so much room compared to other cars in the segment.
probably the new mr2 will be a cayman/boxter competitor, which means 70k+
11:00 Your not completely wrong but not right either. Just because its a "bigger" engine does not mean its better. You can have a smaller engine with higher output, or a smaller engine that is put together better with higher tolerances, better materials making the smaller mill a better one. Dont go by that mentality. Baseline its fine but for something like this where you have a huge company making strategic product decisions you need to dig deeper into the why.
Toyobaru Celica/STI collab? They both could use around 400 hp and AWD. Both for rally? Toyota did say they would help Subaru get back into WRC...
reason for which I hope for a gr yaris version from subaru
The Camry similarity paints it in a very '3rd-gen Scion tC' light.
Nice, thanks Kirk.
Hell I would be happy if they reused a lot of the Corolla parts just make it rwd or 4wd coupe with a standard trans option.
Really exciting! I hope that the 86 continues with or without Subaru. I love my new one, and I hope that Toyota keeps some sort of FR like the new S-FR at least.
I thought it was interesting that Koji Sato talked about GR as a brand alongside Toyota and Lexus at the financial press conference recently. That kind of positioning is definitely understandable if they really have all these vehicles in development! Really exciting times for Toyota.
I hope they don’t. It needs to be replaced with the MR2 in my opinion.
@@MaddNomad1015 no, it won't; MR2 will be a cayman/boxter competitor and not a gr86 replacement; the s-fr will be the 86 replacement.
for sure they can consider it now as a performance brand, similar with M, AMG, RS and so on; don't forget Toyota GRs in WEC, GRs in WRC and so on; they are pushing it, pedal to the floor!
The Celica will replace the GR86. Been saying this since people were saying they wanted the G16E in the GR86.
I believe the SFR will come to the US, Toyota will need an affordable sports car, since the Celica will be around $45k.
Shame the MR2 is moving up in class, but hopefully it means better performance. Something like a Alfa 4C or Alpine A110 would be awesome.
That inline 4 turbo sounds intriguing, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it had 400hp, especially after seeing what Toyota did with the G16E.
It would suck to see the Supra go, since it would mean Toyota would only have 3-4 cylinder performance cars. Maybe that could mean Lexus will finally get the performance cars it NEEDS! Lexus can have a Inline 6 or V6 Supra spiritual successor, something below the LFR.
Anyways hope I’m not disappointed.
they will retire the 86 and the supra and they will replace these two cars with 3 models: s-fr instead of the 86(from a price and market place pov), while the celica will be inserted below of the lvl of where the supra is now and the mr2 will go and compete with competitors such as cayman/boxter and co. (a 35k sf-r, a 55k celica, a 70-75k mr2; at least, that is what I belive)
Saw a super nice render of a Celica that looked similar to the latest production model. Looked way nicer than this render imo. Either way, super excited!
Car Vision TV did the render
the australian Drive magazine had a render of it which was awesome(render by Theottle), on the GR yaris platform, if you ask me; it looked epically good!
My sister had a 00s automatic transmission base model Celica and treated her car like crap. Didn't keep up with the maintenance the few times I visited and looked over her car to change the oil and keep track of car maintenance (which was few and far between). Her Celica lasted to 180K miles, despite bad car upkeep of the maintenance. To me, that was a testament to the reliability of the Celica she had.
Definitely more Solara vibes, if that’s the first thing that comes to mind.
Reminds me of playin Sega Rally as a teen😊 Few years later I ended up working at a Toyota dealer and got to drive a few versions of the real one😎
Imagen Toyota having the best SUV (Rav4) the best sedan (Camry) the best large pick up (Tundra) the best midsize pick up (Tacoma) the best sport car (MR2, Celica or Corolla GR) ?
that would mean they understand the automotive industry and what clients and drivers really want from cars.
Finally. We don’t need anymore SUVs! So excited

my dad used to have a 6th gen celica but gave it to my older brother who also gave it to my older sister. I don't know if she still has it but I like the 6th gen celica because it reminds me of my childhood.
I hope the MR2 is something similar to the Alpine A110, rather than a Porsche Boxster/Cayman.
3500lbs for the Celica is brutal, I was thinking it’d be around the same as the GR Yaris (2800lbs-ish). But I am excited for that 4 cylinder!.
Man I hope they don’t get rid of the Supra. I would be happy if they move the Supra up class around the $100k mark, so they can finally build a “in-house” Supra. Maybe even sharing a platform with the new Lexus coupe.
I hoped for a celica coupe body on the gr yaris chassis and drive train; I guess we will not have that..

The thing about the Eclipse though, was that the Eclipse was never sold in Japan until the 2004 Eclipse Spider came out and it was imported into the Japanese market, so the Celica definitely had a much larger global market reach than the Eclipse ever did, and even when the eclipse was sold in Japan it was sold as a limited edition. the Celica GT-Four will forever be one of my top favorite WRC cars ever produced, I'd have it right up there with the Ford Escort RS and the Subaru WRX STi on my list.

@@Tigerex966 they cannot do that for multiple reasons, primarily financial ones; in order for this prelude to appear, they need to platform sharing the ef from it; that still means civic hybrid chassis and most of its drive train; but, if they can put a more powerful electric motor in it(which wouldn't be that expensive) and a slightly bigger battery for a more sportier drive, yeah...maybe 220-240 would be possible; with a more powerful electric engine, a bigger sized battery is a must as the civic hybrid ran out of battery in the middle of the nurburgring lap and went the rest of it only with the help of ~140 hp ICE one; in order to get full performance, you need both of them so a slight increase in battery size is a must if the prelude will have any sort of sporty performance.
edit. double clutch, no chance as neither it, nor a manual or a 9 spd auto for that matter can't work with their hybrid system...not at the current times, that is; we don't know what the future will bring into discussion.
I mean the S-FR would just be a replacement of the GR86 IMHO. Since the GR86 is already a Miata fighter.
I hope the Celica looks like this. This looks really good.
Best car are prophets 😂 so who knows
looks a lil big and too conservative to be a celica
@@tinhinnh Exactly, Celica's didn't look like Camry's or Corolla's in the 90's. Wish they gave this a completely unique design.
@@tinhinnh it better have nice hips
I want this over the BRZ. I am sorry.
Transverse front biased Awd...no thanks!
@@patrickbateman7122 exactly this!, gr86/brz is much more of a driver's car.
@@eugenux You know it! Celica is like a pretend sports car to me..
@@patrickbateman7122 20-30 years of awd, fwd, hatchbacks and suvs made the general public unaware about driving dynamics. I do hope the s-fr and the mr2 would turn out to be good cars; hopefully, the mr2 would not be priced as a cayman/boxter competitor(although it will) and the s-fr it will be north of 200 hp and lighter than the gr86/brz. If it won't, then the answer, for me at least, in this future EV world will remain the gr86(relatively light, small, manual, n/a, rwd with a fun rear axle behaviour).
@@eugenux yes your right! I'll probably get the GR86 over an M2 due to being so much lighter..i believe the MR2 will be an EV 🤢 interested to hear more about this S-FR though 👍
2dr LC FJ would make a nice Jimny that we don’t get
I’m definitely getting Scion Tc vibes from the side.
New 4runner, supra from a few years ago, mini champ and now new MR2 and Celica 🤯🤯🙌🙌🙌
I hope the design gets A LOT BETTER and they put a nice BIG WING on the car!
The first generation Celica is my absolute dream car. A bumper switch with round headlamps like the Rocket Bunny Silvias would absolutely transform these into something similar to a modern Camaro or a Challenger.
Great coverage! More miata under 2500lbs competition would be amazing. The 86 with a fun toyota engine would be great
love Celica & MR2
If they could drop a high revving ~400HP Yamaha built engine in their next Supra or MR2, that would be a chef’s kiss of a car.
