Born in 77 like you. Had a middle class upbringing and experienced a lot of the same. We definitely were lied to and things were much more hidden. Before the internet and social media it was much harder to get alternative views and the "real" unfiltered news by people there and not bought by any special interests. We were ignorant and happy. I'm not saying that being ignorant and happy was better, but it sure felt better. Nowadays there is such a thick layer of melancholy and fear hanging over everything. We are more informed than ever, but are we happier? Better off? I don't know, maybe we are. All I know is I really miss those (perceived) innocent times.
It’s a total mind f***. I get so confused by it because I loved my childhood and teen/college years. The pop culture, the vibe, the whole American experience. At the same time the 80s and 90s were blissful ignorance when it came to our leaders and what they were doing here at home and around the world. And then 9/11 happened and I started to discover the truth. Thanks to alternative media!

But to try and save the American republic from total destruction (so our offspring and descendants can enjoy that same blissful experience), we had to have the internet to open up alternative media sources and access information. Which killed the blissful ignorance as our leaders killed the American dream and experience. And our culture started to rot in a way that nothing new is enjoyable. So, ultimately neither one is better. They both have their own flaws and perks.
@mysocalledgenxlife maybe it's also part of growing up. I'm sure every generation before us at some point on the road to mid life age realized they had a blissful ignorance growing up. The world has a way of grinding you down sometimes. It takes a lot to be able to learn the harsh realities and still keep a positive and optimistic outlook. I know I still try. Though I'd be lying if said I didn't find it really difficult some days. Like just having a conversation with my sweet (and completely awesome) mom about current politics. She is in her 70's and only watches mainstream liberal media. She's on the "anyone but Trump" bandwagon not realizing the even scarier reality of the side spewing that stuff is planning and capable of. Be wary of anyone using a strawman argument. That's why it's still important to enjoy the simpler things to stay sane. I'm always looking for things to try to stay positive and inspired. Like the best 80's or 90's movies! Love the lists btw!

It was a wonderful time. We grew up on US/UK pop culture here in Finland and I think the youth of this time have a shared experience. The 80's was such s hopeful, positive time and the 90's brought all the tech and youth culture. A lot of things peaked then and faded away or became mainstream later.

I grapple with the same questions in some ways. Though it is also tempered with me wondering... if perhaps all of this, the struggles with change and the new generation and realization that the world is not what we thought it was... is that just something that all generations go through? Or were we and are we truly witnessing something monumental and historical and the horror of it all? It's a hard thing to get through, I hope you have success with your journey.

My brother is Gen X, born in England in summer 1974. He’s watched this video and loves it and remembers fondly back to when the world was a better place to be. It’s painful what we have now. I’m 30 years old and I relate much more to the Gen Xers than any other generation. Gen Xers had Interesting technology, there were buttons and switches and dials instead of touchscreens, better music, great movies, people talked to one another face-to-face, kids played outside until it got dark, they used to climb trees, make go-carts, and my brother said they used to make home-made perfume from rose petals and other flowers. My brother said they even played with matches! Seventies and 80s England was great. I’m pretty sure it was great in the States as well.
I sorta get you want to the microgen thing. I was born in 1997 so I am a #Cusper or Zillennial which is half millenial and half gen z. I don't fit either perfectly but I relate to both a little
Same! I’m very Gen X in a lot of ways. But since I didn’t become a teenager until the 90s, I have a lot of millennial qualities too. Things are changing so fast that people born 10 years apart can hardly be considered in the same generation anymore like in the days before modern technology. Gen x is 65-80. I was born in 77. And my experience is way different than someone born in 67.
Cool channel. I use the 1975-1985 timeline for Xennials as with talking online to other people our age (1977 baby here) there was a bit of a lag when you got outside of big cities ans suburbs. I grew up a Military brat so what I saw first hand was what was cool in one place wasn't necessarily cool elsewhere. Some places were big cities and some medium cities and I even got to live outside the US. I also helped to raise two younger siblings bornin 88 and 91 and they are definitely Millennials and had a very different childhood and outlook than we did. Its also worth mentioning that Millennials that had okder siblings had a glimpse into our world (because they wanted to or got to tag along) so past 1985, yeah thats a different childhood.😉👍✨

I don't mind pulling the curtain back. I had my time in, had what fun I could, and got it all done before 2 Colorado dipshits in trenchcoats heralded the end of any and all good things. Taking a critical eye to what was going on behind that curtain is necessary and overdue if we're to avoid repeat mistakes. But man oh man do I miss the lack of dread and abundance of free time that used to frame the world back then (yes, I know, the last 10 years of the Cold War were no picnic but at least there was hope in there somewhere).
Fellow Gen-Xer, born in 1975. I agree with previous comments. We didn't realise at the time just how awesome or unique the 80s and early 90s were. To us, it's just how life was. While I do love modern tech, I admit that I still obsessively long for the 80s. This could be personal bias, but it often seems the 80s are the one decade, over any other, that people are nostalgic for, whether they lived through it or not.
I was born in 1985, 4:48 but I feel so much more like a gen-x or a xenial. Having an older sister, the first season of The Real World I watched, was San Francisco. I remember wondering why was Puck so rude? I got all her hand me downs and looked like a grungy riot girl in middle school. I got all her old cassettes when she got a cd player. My boomer parents also sent me outside so I wouldn’t bother them. I’m with you all!
Haa, I was the kinda dude that would find people at a party to have rational GenX conversation with, and you were the chick at the party that would argue with me at every point. Then at the end of the night after too many Zimas, and Boones Farm, we would be making out lol, that was a regular part of my GenX life.
I'm a '77 baby too! It was a very strange, transitional time. I'm deeply grateful the internet and social media didn't exist in my teen years: all my dumbest adventures are lost to time forever, LOL
Regarding your ending thoughts about a deep-state, there was definitely some big brother manipulation going on in 20th century America, from the government pushing single-family homes on people to advocating marriages through tax-breaks. However, due to the vast amount of turnover constantly happening in the government and the impossibility of micromanaging people's lives (which were largely lived off the grid, with few cameras or other technologies to keep track of people's day to day activities) there was, for the most part, no singular vision or specific agenda ruling peoples' lives. What changed in the 21st century was the ability for people with an agenda to instantly find sympathetic followers and create niche radicalized tribes that could speak with one voice and create movements much more quickly than in the past. Meanwhile, whereas the media had to cast a wide net in the 20th century and cater to many views to maintain high ratings, it's different now, with media recognizing that catering to a loyal niche audience works better in today's age where people have many more choices. Thus people now pick the news content they want to see (or have it chosen for them by algorithms, as you mention) with that content specifically reinforcing a person's own viewpoint as its central narrative.

1976 here. just found the channel thanks to your wheel of fortune video. so according to this intro video, not only are you about the nostalgia, but it sounds like you wonder (as so many of us do), when did it all fall apart? and why?and how? and can we ever get it back? the generation gap is widening. rapidly. i once happened on a group of high school ap history students having a study group. i could tell they were struggling with the assignment so i told them i lived through the very thing they were studying and asked if i could share. they said okay, but i'm not sure if they were just trying to be nice or what the problem was but we failed to connect. i was still in college. FIVE YEARS AGE DIFFERENCE and we were already in different worlds. now we have an animated and very dumbed down version of mister rogers, and an even dumber and very annoying spinoff. or maybe that was a few years ago. i don't see any tween/teen content on pbs these days; it's all preschool level. i feel sad for that age today. for educational tv we had 321 contact and newton's apple. they have... anything? for entertainment we had things ranging from reruns of toons that were originally aimed at adults (bugs, daffy, tom and jerry, pink panther, flintstones, jetsons) to first-runs aimed at us (smurfs, voltron, ghostbusters, animaniacs). we also got live action stuff like ycdtotv. today's kids get what exactly? i don't have cable. never did (all the above aired on free-tv in l.a., except ycdtotv was on cable at my aunt's house). maybe all the tween/teen shows migrated to nickelodian? idk. i don't have that age around the house. anyway, didn't mean to soapbox, but FINALLY a tuber that MIGHT actually be about more than the same old same circulating in the nostalgia circles. I just discovered your channel and decided to start with this video. I was also born in 1977 and enjoyed my non-technological toys, Saturday morning cartoons, classic video games, and spending endless amounts of time outside during the summer, And yet I fully embraced the early forms of the Internet when I got to college in the mid 90s. I’m looking forward to diving into some of your other videos.
You brought up some interesting things at the end of your video. First, we were kids, a lot of the questions you're asking now, were asked by adults THEN. There was discourse on everything we did. And you'll find plenty of non fiction books written at the time, shortly after and much later that explore all of this, as it was also explored in various news media. LIFE, Newsweek and many others. Addressing schools, your State and then local community determined curriculum. And some schools could choose to take on some federal programs if they wanted the money that came with it. News media has changed, much more so in the last 15 years. It started with Fox news, blurring the line between news coverage and opinion. Then CNN followed suit, and then MSNBC by taking a Left approach to counter FOX's right. Fox was the winner in ratings, so CNN leaned more towards opinion as the years went on. It went both Right and Left at times. Then Social Media began to draw in people of ALL ages en masse. The rise of the Smart Phone escalated even more change (not just to news media, but to EVERYTHING). Now you have several Right leaning and Left leaning news outlets. The standard 30 minute Network news outlets have all leaned to the Left. They don't offer opinion, but it's clear through their presentation. Finding news without bias and being completely fact driven is difficult and takes effort. Agenda's, political beliefs have always been present in entertainment media to varying degrees. But, as politics and agendas have leeched behind the scenes more openly and pervasively, those agendas and beliefs are presented in obvious ways, often clumsy to the degree the quality of the tv show or movie suffers. James Bond, Star Trek, Star Wars, the Witcher and many others are great examples. Things will change again.
1969 here - i am always interested in hearing the stories from older Gen X'ers like myself alongside younger ones like yourself, just to see how much different being born a decade from each other can be, while being counted as the same generation (though thanks for your additional information about Zenials) ... while also sharing many experiences.

Hi, I am Gen X. born in 1974. I am from the UK. We had a lot of American shows. I remember Sesame street and captain cave man... You raise some interesting points. I look back now and some of the popular culture looks very dated. But at the time it was new and exciting. Funny how things age.
I grew up in New Jersey in a upper middle class town and graduated in 1999, my husband grew up in Ohio we definitely learned different things in school. My history classes covered more than his. My health classes were also more “ liberal”. I’m still shocked at the things he wasn’t taught.
I can definitely see schools in the Midwest having different curriculums compared to the Northeast. There were definitely nuances. This was my very first video and I just talked off the top of my head. I generalized a lot! lol. Thanks for the comment!

I mistakenly for a long time had assumed many people learned many of the things I learned in my high school history and English classes. Born in '73. I cannot agree with your premise more. The fact that there has been this unseen hand guiding our boat under the water our entire lives has become more obvious the older i get. Within the last few years this has caused me to reevaluate everything i basically think of our country and my world. In short, its absolutely terrifying.
Do you find the quality of liquids, water, and day to day foods has change at all? Would it be possible that certain chemicals, consumed or applied in a topical fashion like make-up or sun screen, could have targeted certain age groups at a developmental stage to produce various effects that may cause metal and health issues, as well as age related appearance effects? I've noticed that majority of older generation in the past looked so much better in an all around health and aesthetic sense than current day people.

My Zoomer kids are 50/50 based. I was tortured by Boomers, but loved being an 80's kids with our strangely dark media. I used to buy Fangoria and watch ET for snippets (a single pic) of up incoming film releases, that we'd get sometime yrs after you guys. Only had one McDonalds in the whole country in the 70's. Little did we know.

Please don't embark on conspiracy theories. Otherwise I am looking forward to this. I think the generations as they are defined, are really only applicable to America, and maybe parts of the "western world", but there are always some things that vide with people from other places. I was born in the same year as you, but in a socialist country, behind the iron curtain, and I was 12 when the thing came down. I was on the streets, screaming for freedom, a concept I had seen in western TV and though it meant that I can buy everything I want. (I am sarcasric here). Germany re-united, or let's say the West took over the East and well... it felt like being an immigrant, but you also brought you own country. But what you said about having an analog childhood and a digital youth. Nowhere was it more true that here. Before the fall of the wall, there were books and 3 TV channels and some radio. That was it. No home video rentals, no VCR's, home computer, gaming consoles nothing. But the first thing I bought and spent all my savings on in 1990 - was a computer, an Amiga 500. life was never the same.

I'm undeniably a Millennial being born in the early 90s but I was raised by parents the same age as some of my peers' grandparents (born in the early to mid 50s). I envy Gen Xers so much because you guys really did grow up and come of age in the best time periods I think possible!

We are more informed than ever, but are we happier? Better off? I don't know, maybe we are.
All I know is I really miss those (perceived) innocent times.
It’s a total mind f***. I get so confused by it because I loved my childhood and teen/college years. The pop culture, the vibe, the whole American experience.
At the same time the 80s and 90s were blissful ignorance when it came to our leaders and what they were doing here at home and around the world.
And then 9/11 happened and I started to discover the truth. Thanks to alternative media!

But to try and save the American republic from total destruction (so our offspring and descendants can enjoy that same blissful experience), we had to have the internet to open up alternative media sources and access information. Which killed the blissful ignorance as our leaders killed the American dream and experience. And our culture started to rot in a way that nothing new is enjoyable.
So, ultimately neither one is better. They both have their own flaws and perks.
@mysocalledgenxlife maybe it's also part of growing up. I'm sure every generation before us at some point on the road to mid life age realized they had a blissful ignorance growing up. The world has a way of grinding you down sometimes. It takes a lot to be able to learn the harsh realities and still keep a positive and optimistic outlook.
I know I still try. Though I'd be lying if said I didn't find it really difficult some days.
Like just having a conversation with my sweet (and completely awesome) mom about current politics.
She is in her 70's and only watches mainstream liberal media. She's on the "anyone but Trump" bandwagon not realizing the even scarier reality of the side spewing that stuff is planning and capable of. Be wary of anyone using a strawman argument.
That's why it's still important to enjoy the simpler things to stay sane. I'm always looking for things to try to stay positive and inspired. Like the best 80's or 90's movies! Love the lists btw!

It was a wonderful time. We grew up on US/UK pop culture here in Finland and I think the youth of this time have a shared experience. The 80's was such s hopeful, positive time and the 90's brought all the tech and youth culture. A lot of things peaked then and faded away or became mainstream later.
I'm not Gen X at all, I was born in 2006, and I'm looking forward to hearing how things were like back in the day.

I grapple with the same questions in some ways. Though it is also tempered with me wondering... if perhaps all of this, the struggles with change and the new generation and realization that the world is not what we thought it was... is that just something that all generations go through? Or were we and are we truly witnessing something monumental and historical and the horror of it all? It's a hard thing to get through, I hope you have success with your journey.

My brother is Gen X, born in England in summer 1974. He’s watched this video and loves it and remembers fondly back to when the world was a better place to be. It’s painful what we have now. I’m 30 years old and I relate much more to the Gen Xers than any other generation. Gen Xers had Interesting technology, there were buttons and switches and dials instead of touchscreens, better music, great movies, people talked to one another face-to-face, kids played outside until it got dark, they used to climb trees, make go-carts, and my brother said they used to make home-made perfume from rose petals and other flowers. My brother said they even played with matches! Seventies and 80s England was great.

Same! I’m very Gen X in a lot of ways. But since I didn’t become a teenager until the 90s, I have a lot of millennial qualities too. Things are changing so fast that people born 10 years apart can hardly be considered in the same generation anymore like in the days before modern technology. Gen x is 65-80. I was born in 77. And my experience is way different than someone born in 67.

Cool channel. I use the 1975-1985 timeline for Xennials as with talking online to other people our age (1977 baby here) there was a bit of a lag when you got outside of big cities ans suburbs. I grew up a Military brat so what I saw first hand was what was cool in one place wasn't necessarily cool elsewhere. Some places were big cities and some medium cities and I even got to live outside the US.
I also helped to raise two younger siblings bornin 88 and 91 and they are definitely Millennials and had a very different childhood and outlook than we did. Its also worth mentioning that Millennials that had okder siblings had a glimpse into our world (because they wanted to or got to tag along) so past 1985, yeah thats a different childhood.😉👍✨
I just jumped out of a Gen-X group. Because all they were doing was complaining about how kids are ruining everything. They have turned into boomers on Facebook

I don't mind pulling the curtain back. I had my time in, had what fun I could, and got it all done before 2 Colorado dipshits in trenchcoats heralded the end of any and all good things. Taking a critical eye to what was going on behind that curtain is necessary and overdue if we're to avoid repeat mistakes. But man oh man do I miss the lack of dread and abundance of free time that used to frame the world back then (yes, I know, the last 10 years of the Cold War were no picnic but at least there was hope in there somewhere).

Fellow Gen-Xer, born in 1975. I agree with previous comments. We didn't realise at the time just how awesome or unique the 80s and early 90s were. To us, it's just how life was. While I do love modern tech, I admit that I still obsessively long for the 80s. This could be personal bias, but it often seems the 80s are the one decade, over any other, that people are nostalgic for, whether they lived through it or not.
I was born in 1985, 4:48 but I feel so much more like a gen-x or a xenial. Having an older sister, the first season of The Real World I watched, was San Francisco. I remember wondering why was Puck so rude? I got all her hand me downs and looked like a grungy riot girl in middle school. I got all her old cassettes when she got a cd player. My boomer parents also sent me outside so I wouldn’t bother them. I’m with you all!

Regarding your ending thoughts about a deep-state, there was definitely some big brother manipulation going on in 20th century America, from the government pushing single-family homes on people to advocating marriages through tax-breaks. However, due to the vast amount of turnover constantly happening in the government and the impossibility of micromanaging people's lives (which were largely lived off the grid, with few cameras or other technologies to keep track of people's day to day activities) there was, for the most part, no singular vision or specific agenda ruling peoples' lives. What changed in the 21st century was the ability for people with an agenda to instantly find sympathetic followers and create niche radicalized tribes that could speak with one voice and create movements much more quickly than in the past. Meanwhile, whereas the media had to cast a wide net in the 20th century and cater to many views to maintain high ratings, it's different now, with media recognizing that catering to a loyal niche audience works better in today's age where people have many more choices. Thus people now pick the news content they want to see (or have it chosen for them by algorithms, as you mention) with that content specifically reinforcing a person's own viewpoint as its central narrative.
I was born in 1974 so I guess I don't fall in with this category but nonetheless I still love the late 70s and the 80s and I kind of dig a few things from the 90s.... Do they still say dig nowadays?

Xer from 1970. I wish you luck in this channel exposing the harsher elements of the 80s and mid 90s. Some only wish to wash away (wishy washy?) those aspects and replace them with rose colored comforts as if nothing went wrong or aren't being affected now, and I don't just mean New Coke or mullets.

1976 here. just found the channel thanks to your wheel of fortune video. so according to this intro video, not only are you about the nostalgia, but it sounds like you wonder (as so many of us do), when did it all fall apart? and why?and how? and can we ever get it back?
the generation gap is widening. rapidly. i once happened on a group of high school ap history students having a study group. i could tell they were struggling with the assignment so i told them i lived through the very thing they were studying and asked if i could share. they said okay, but i'm not sure if they were just trying to be nice or what the problem was but we failed to connect. i was still in college. FIVE YEARS AGE DIFFERENCE and we were already in different worlds.
now we have an animated and very dumbed down version of mister rogers, and an even dumber and very annoying spinoff. or maybe that was a few years ago. i don't see any tween/teen content on pbs these days; it's all preschool level. i feel sad for that age today. for educational tv we had 321 contact and newton's apple. they have... anything? for entertainment we had things ranging from reruns of toons that were originally aimed at adults (bugs, daffy, tom and jerry, pink panther, flintstones, jetsons) to first-runs aimed at us (smurfs, voltron, ghostbusters, animaniacs). we also got live action stuff like ycdtotv. today's kids get what exactly? i don't have cable. never did (all the above aired on free-tv in l.a., except ycdtotv was on cable at my aunt's house). maybe all the tween/teen shows migrated to nickelodian? idk. i don't have that age around the house.
anyway, didn't mean to soapbox, but FINALLY a tuber that MIGHT actually be about more than the same old same circulating in the nostalgia circles. SUBSCRIBING!

I just discovered your channel and decided to start with this video. I was also born in 1977 and enjoyed my non-technological toys, Saturday morning cartoons, classic video games, and spending endless amounts of time outside during the summer, And yet I fully embraced the early forms of the Internet when I got to college in the mid 90s. I’m looking forward to diving into some of your other videos.

You brought up some interesting things at the end of your video. First, we were kids, a lot of the questions you're asking now, were asked by adults THEN. There was discourse on everything we did. And you'll find plenty of non fiction books written at the time, shortly after and much later that explore all of this, as it was also explored in various news media. LIFE, Newsweek and many others. Addressing schools, your State and then local community determined curriculum. And some schools could choose to take on some federal programs if they wanted the money that came with it.
News media has changed, much more so in the last 15 years. It started with Fox news, blurring the line between news coverage and opinion. Then CNN followed suit, and then MSNBC by taking a Left approach to counter FOX's right. Fox was the winner in ratings, so CNN leaned more towards opinion as the years went on. It went both Right and Left at times. Then Social Media began to draw in people of ALL ages en masse. The rise of the Smart Phone escalated even more change (not just to news media, but to EVERYTHING). Now you have several Right leaning and Left leaning news outlets. The standard 30 minute Network news outlets have all leaned to the Left. They don't offer opinion, but it's clear through their presentation. Finding news without bias and being completely fact driven is difficult and takes effort.
Agenda's, political beliefs have always been present in entertainment media to varying degrees. But, as politics and agendas have leeched behind the scenes more openly and pervasively, those agendas and beliefs are presented in obvious ways, often clumsy to the degree the quality of the tv show or movie suffers. James Bond, Star Trek, Star Wars, the Witcher and many others are great examples.
Things will change again.
1969 here - i am always interested in hearing the stories from older Gen X'ers like myself alongside younger ones like yourself, just to see how much different being born a decade from each other can be, while being counted as the same generation (though thanks for your additional information about Zenials) ... while also sharing many experiences.
Hello! After starting this channel I’ve come to realize there is a big difference in older gen Xers and younger gen Xers. Hi, I am Gen X. born in 1974. I am from the UK. We had a lot of American shows. I remember Sesame street and captain cave man... You raise some interesting points. I look back now and some of the popular culture looks very dated. But at the time it was new and exciting. Funny how things age.

I grew up in New Jersey in a upper middle class town and graduated in 1999, my husband grew up in Ohio we definitely learned different things in school. My history classes covered more than his. My health classes were also more “ liberal”. I’m still shocked at the things he wasn’t taught.
I can definitely see schools in the Midwest having different curriculums compared to the Northeast. There were definitely nuances. This was my very first video and I just talked off the top of my head. I generalized a lot! lol. Thanks for the comment!

I wasn’t criticizing in way. I was just sharing my experience. I mistakenly for a long time had assumed many people learned many of the things I learned in my high school history and English classes. I was shocked as an adult to realize there were people who hadn’t learned the things I learned in school.
Born in '73. I cannot agree with your premise more. The fact that there has been this unseen hand guiding our boat under the water our entire lives has become more obvious the older i get. Within the last few years this has caused me to reevaluate everything i basically think of our country and my world. In short, its absolutely terrifying.

Do you find the quality of liquids, water, and day to day foods has change at all? Would it be possible that certain chemicals, consumed or applied in a topical fashion like make-up or sun screen, could have targeted certain age groups at a developmental stage to produce various effects that may cause metal and health issues, as well as age related appearance effects? I've noticed that majority of older generation in the past looked so much better in an all around health and aesthetic sense than current day people.

GenX from NZ class of 73''. My Zoomer kids are 50/50 based. I was tortured by Boomers, but loved being an 80's kids with our strangely dark media. I used to buy Fangoria and watch ET for snippets (a single pic) of up incoming film releases, that we'd get sometime yrs after you guys. Only had one McDonalds in the whole country in the 70's. Little did we know.

I think the generations as they are defined, are really only applicable to America, and maybe parts of the "western world", but there are always some things that vide with people from other places.
I was born in the same year as you, but in a socialist country, behind the iron curtain, and I was 12 when the thing came down. I was on the streets, screaming for freedom, a concept I had seen in western TV and though it meant that I can buy everything I want. (I am sarcasric here). Germany re-united, or let's say the West took over the East and well... it felt like being an immigrant, but you also brought you own country.
But what you said about having an analog childhood and a digital youth. Nowhere was it more true that here. Before the fall of the wall, there were books and 3 TV channels and some radio. That was it. No home video rentals, no VCR's, home computer, gaming consoles nothing.
But the first thing I bought and spent all my savings on in 1990 - was a computer, an Amiga 500. life was never the same.

I'm undeniably a Millennial being born in the early 90s but I was raised by parents the same age as some of my peers' grandparents (born in the early to mid 50s).
