  • I demonstrate how cutting on the flat rather than on the fold could allow you to make a garment with less fabric than the meterage printed on the envelope!

    Growing up mum always taught me that before you in the fabric measure out the width on the floor (eg 45" ) and then play around with paving your pattern on the "fabtix". You can often find a more economical way of playing out your pattern meaning you can afford to purchase less fabric than the stated amount, or you have enough left over to make a top, shorts or a child's dress from the leftover fabric. I found a wall for one selve edge and a metre rule (or carpenter's folding rule) for the other worked well and the time taken often saved me buying unnecessray fabric or allowed me to buy a more expensive fabric than I would otherwise have bought. Great video, great idea. Pattern layouts on the envelope or in the instructions are often very wasteful.

      Thanks Karen and cutting by the wall is genius! Why have I never done that?!

    Yes to Iive stream! I loved this video...great reminder to use all the material and not waste as much. Also, the grain can run both ways on a cotton... I have cut flannel sleep shorts perpendicular to the "grain" to lines so to only use .75 yards of leftovers. Works the same. Bias cut is also a great example of cutting a singular piece of fabric. Love the green material and can't wait to see the finished product. 😀

    Livestreams are fun! :) Often I miss them and end up watching afterwards. Still enjoyable. This is a very helpful video. I've done creative fabric folding before, and even though I've known about cutting out on the flat, never tried it. Going to keep this in mind, because often I buy fabric because I love it, not knowing what I will make...then run short when I finally decide! So thank you for this!! Love your channel!

    Livestream yes! Saving fabric - a nice demo there of avoiding fabric waste. I have often ended up sewing bits of the scraps together to make enough fabric for a final piece, or slicing off an awkward shape and sewing it back in a designerish way from scraps. With ingenuity it can add to the style. Re your flowery piece - I think I'd match it with some complementary fabric and make a dress.

    Great video. I also think that yardage/meterage is overestimated on patterns. Or maybe I'm just very good at getting the most out of my fabric. I hear people say "One yard of knit fabric? What can I even do with that?" and I'm over here making a 3/4 sleeved t-shirt and a pair of underwear. And I'm quite a chubby lady, so. And yeah, provided it doesn't conflict with whatever else I might be doing, I'd pop in to watch a livestream.

    • @StitchMyStyle
      @StitchMyStyle  4 года назад +1

      Ha ha! Yes I think it varies between companies too - to give Charm Patterns their due they do say yardage assumes a nap so they allow extra which is quite helpful as often you’re left to figure it out on your own!

    I think your fabric would look good as a cowl neck top,the drape would be lovely.Maybe you were thinking of making a skirt .If you had a similar plain fabric you could make godets in the skirt. Back in the early 70,s most fabric was 36" wide.48"was considered wide and 60" massive. I mainly cut on the flat,otherwise you had large weird shape fabrics left over.I love your sense of humour so yes to a live stream.

    If you like wearing kind of brocade-y fabrics, I'd make a box pleated knee length skirt in a matching neutral colour and do a vintage style top with the flower stretch fabric, something with an interesting neckline and 3/4 sleeves.

    I am fairly new to garment sewing. I have a question about cutting pattern pieces on the fold. In your second example (using the double fold method) I expected you to adjust the fold on one side to be a deeper fold, the other side would be less. I have done this uneven double fold to be able to fit pattern pieces. Is there a reason one shouldn't do that?

    • @StitchMyStyle
      @StitchMyStyle  4 года назад

      Good question! No you can absolutely do an uneven fold, I tried it and it still didn't fit but didn't mention it so you're right to ask!

  • @valerieazonwanna9521

    Might be a silly question but do you have to take out seam allowance(down the middle only ) when tracing Into a full pattern piece? Will the garment fit the same otherwise? Btw, love that your back. And the cooing in the background is sweet. Take good care.

    • @StitchMyStyle
      @StitchMyStyle  4 года назад +1

      If the pattern piece was designed to be cut on the fold there shouldn’t be seam allowance down that side (that sits against the fold) so you should be OK!

    Hello. I’m new to your channel. I’ve been searching for a tutorial on how to lay your patterns on the flat. However, I was told when you’re cutting on the flat that the fabric should be right side up. Also, Americans tend to flip the paper pattern pieces over instead of tracing them out. Sometimes they have the pattern piece right side up on fabric and sometime they have it wrong side up on the fabric. I’m confused as to when you need to flip pattern pieces. Can you help me with that? Possibly a video on how to cut on the flat, American style. Thanks.

    • @StitchMyStyle
      @StitchMyStyle  4 года назад +1

      Hello and welcome! I'll try to answer your questions, as with most things there are varying opinions on both! I would cut with the fabric right side up myself, that way if you have a print you can see where it will be positioned on your pieces (assuming you are using a paper with some transparency) and you can avoid any flaws etc. I am going to use the matt side of this fabric as the 'right side' (you could use either, I'm just not a massive satin fan) so was cutting 'right side up' in this instance.
      You could absolutely flip the pattern pieces, the only issue I find with doing that is that you can't always be sure things don't slip or move when you 'do the flip' plus it's harder to see what your pattern placement should be to make the most out of the fabric. When you trace them out you can be sure to have the exact mirror image replicated, and you can lay all your pieces out and move them around to your hearts content without having to keep flipping pieces back and forward to see if you have enough room!
      On flipping pieces over - you need to do that if you need two copies of a piece that are a mirror of each other - for example for sleeves in a woven garment where you need and left and a right sleeve (usually the piece is not symmetrical as the back armhole is often longer than the front armhole). If you don't flip the piece and do one face down and one face up, you'll end up with two right or two left sleeves and you won't be able to fit one to the bodice. You should be able to see in the pattern layout that comes with the pattern if they have said to cut a piece on folded fabric, then you'll need to flip the pattern piece when you cut flat to replicate the fact that when you cut on folded fabric you are cutting one piece right side up and one piece right side down.
      I hope that makes sense - tricky to explain!
