It’s the sad truth that took many too long to realize. Brendon is in no way a bad artist, but Ryan’s poetic lyrics is what made this fanbase what it is in the beginning. If Ryan wasn’t there, panic probably would’ve been put in the same conversation as like maroon 5

    • @Greatlakeskyle.
      @Greatlakeskyle. 6 месяцев назад +33

The poetic lyricism is what makes me struggle to understand the bad critic ratings. You take that first album and compare it to anything else mainstream past 2010 and it’s clear that album had such character.

Not the lyrics at all. What made them successful is that the music from the first record was amazing from beginning to end. Every subsequent album had no more than one good song

Night and day difference between Maroon’s vocalist and Brendon. Brendon is far superior without a doubt. Panic’s composition is way better as well. But that’s just a matter of opinion.

Let’s not skip over the fact that bands often take a decade to get any real recognition while simultaneously growing as individuals and as a group, PatD had no such development and were thrown into the spotlight extremely quickly. Their “downfall” was on public display whereas this often happens in private, long before any public eyes. Many bands come and go in this way before anyone even knows who they are. PatD were just a set of kids who didn’t have it in them to survive a decade of graft before another decade of fame. There’s no shame in that whatsoever. They had an amazing run. They achieved huge success in half the time only a tiny number of bands ever see.

I don't care what anyone says: that first album was a f'ing BANGER. When I think back to 2006 (which is when I first heard it) driving around listening to that album is a huge part of it. I always appreciated bands like PatD for incorporating elements of theater and fantasy into their music and motiffs. Music boxes, circuses, folk music, dollhousex, cabaret, Tim Burton, Masterpiece Theater, Sgt. Peppers, etc, all these elements mixed together to create a sense of whimsy. I am reminded of a line from one of my favorite video game characters:

Pretty Odd is a masterpiece. It's so intricate, and commands a real depth. The lyrics are full of symbolism and nestled into a great place where there's enough sense to them to create narratives, but it can be a different narritive on each listen. As you said, it feels to me like an addition to the canon of late stage Beatles and Beach Boys, i.e. pychadelic pop.
"I know the world's a broken bone, but melt your headaches, call it home." That line has somehow coforted me many times through the years.

I would argue that it's neither a copy nor cheap. It certainly doesn't have the innovation, nor quite the level of genius, but it doesn't feel trite, rather as inspired by the same source. And thus it has something of it's own, which gives it a great value. There's a certain thing that only that album can do. IMO.

I know some critics call it whiny but the reason that Panic at the Disco is mainly Brendan Urie is because his voice. It is special. He is one of those people that no matter what he sings its sounds like a hit song. Bradley Nowell had it too. So do certain pop stars like Dua Lipa. The early Panic songs were really good but the reason the demo's are incredible is because Urie is a truly gifted vocalist.

He not only has a good voice, but he can play a lot of instruments as well. I think that's why he kept Panic as more of a solo project with hired touring musicians rather than getting new band mates. He had the musical ability to write and play the instrumentals himself, so he just did. He even recorded all the instruments himself for Death of a Bachelor. Collaboration can be great, but if you can do it all yourself, then why not?

Pretty Odd was unfortunately a "flop" to a lot of kids / casual listeners but looking at it objectively, it's a very well written album. You could NOT get 19-21 year old me (or anybody, really) to write anything that intricate and special that the album has. It sucks that it got compared a lot to the edge that 'Fever' brought to the scene. I completely get that the difference in imagery is very jarring, and I wish people would revisit Pretty Odd and receive it like it's by a literal whole other band - that could help establish fresh ears and perspective to listen with.

Pretty Odd is pretty special in my opinion. Most bands don't have the guts to venture so far from their base and push themselves into a style that hadn't been popular in decades. Maybe its the brashness of youth or the confidence that comes from illegal substances but they really went for it. All I can ever ask from bands I like is to try their best to create good songs and Pretty Odd has them in droves. I still revisit this album and am so impressed that kids that young could and would want to create music this musically complex. I know when you are young if you are expecting pizza, you want pizza and if someone shows up with braised short rib you aren't satisfied. That being said it's a real forgotten gem.

So it was heartbreaking when Ryan left. After vices & virtues I pretty much stop listened to the band and moved on to another genres but just a few years ago I started listening to them again and man you're so right about Ryan talent s a songwriter. Truly inspiring and, at the same time, it was truly inspiring to me to starting playing instruments and make music since I was a teenager.

Ryan Ross is a talented musician and songwriter, but Brendon is a star. I think Ryan rightfully got credit for writing A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. That said, he was not the frontman of the band and was, frankly, boring to watch (compared to Brendon.) It was the Brendan Urie Show because Brendon is also musically talented, theatrical, charismatic, nice to look at, and a damn good showman.

a lot of people fell out of love with Panic immediately after Ryan Ross left, and not to knock his God-given talent, but I'm not one of those people. I've always associated the band as Brendon's thing, and it became more apparent as time went along. I've either loved/really enjoyed every Panic album up until PFTW & VLV and I'm honestly sad that he decided to call it quits. I also think the online hate for Brendon and some of the controversial mistakes he's made are really just a ridiculous excuse for people to find another reason to talk shit about him killing the band

Crazy that you would associate it as Brendon's thing when he was not only the last to join but had almost 0 input on the songs that got them to fame in the first place. Youre doing the biased thing where singer= leader. I used to think people over exaggerated Ryan Ross but once you look into the band you realize that he was essential to Patd. Brendan made it an absolute solo project pop group that is not PATD at heart.

But I loved every album and every song before before, even Pretty. Odd. I hope he eventually comes back into the music scene because even if Ryan started this, Brendon showed his incredible talent too throughout the years. ❤

The dynamic between Ryan and Brendon in the Fever Era is interesting, one part missed in the video is that Ryan wanted a confident voice to sing his confident lyrics.
“If I was the singer, I wouldn’t be able to write some of the stuff I write. [Brendon will] get the praise or he’ll take the heat for it. I wouldn’t be able to deliver that stuff. It’s not that I’m afraid of it, but I’m not confident enough.” - He said to rolling stone.
You got lyrics about crititcs hating their pieces of work, before even the album came out, so very confident stuff. Brendon was the man with charisma who could on stage personify these lyrics.

I can’t put into words how into this band I was in 2006. Their debut album was an instant buy for me once I heard “The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide is Press Coverage” (their actual first single) on the radio a few times. That whole album is great. I saw them at Lollapalooza ’06 and got made fun of for how many pictures I took of P!ATD compared to all the other acts I saw. I didn’t care though.
I just didn’t think the hooks were that strong on the next few records. I pulled for them, just couldn’t get into the songs that much.
That made the success of “Say Amen (Saturday Night)” and “High Hopes” all the more shocking. I can’t think of a more meteoric rebound by any other act I’ve ever followed. I don’t love the songs, but I was happy for Brendon. But I found most of his 2020’s material to be annoying enough that it was probably the right thing to do to hang it up for awhile. I’m sure he’ll be back though; he’s too good of a singer to stay away for long.

Brendon is a performer so him honestly even keeping Panic! going even with help from pop writers shows he really thought this band could keep going and he knew he could give it the performances it needed at that stage in the bands career... He is just really well at performing and you can honestly see that in most of his stuff... He gives credit where it is due of course! He just did what he thought was best and kept the band working and honestly did better than most could have ever done with a band with barely any real founding members left...

"Fever You Can't Sweat out" was a high shadow to fill. A masterpiece. Not a skip on it. Many bands wait til their 3rd or 4th album to put out their most sensational piece. Early success was likely a lot to handle. Like for Blink, Enema was their 4th album. They had some experience being known before they were huge. I am sure that makes a difference. Plus i feel putting out a few more like "Fever" would have been smart before changing direction. Perhaps people would have been more open to it with a larger catalogue. Glad you did a Panic video though! Thank you for that.

I am not too sure they fell so much as the radical style changes alienated the fan base. I have always kept up with them personally. Growing up an emo kid myself I felt that between the long album release wait time, and were we all were in life naturally, our tastes were different. I remember being a freshmen, then sophomore then in college. And for me at least their change always was what I needed and wanted at the time. If it is fall though as in for the band mates and just interpersonal stuff then yes. I can totally agree with it. As you so wonderfully discerned. They began to get shakier and shakier and eventually as far as the band mates falling away one by one what happened was inevitable.

"Fever" was what really got me into emo. I was stuck in a cycle of listening to really boring and cringe music. Then fever came out when i was 16 and i was like "oh... I gotta dump this notion that 'its only good if its super heavy' and actually find stuff thats fun and interesting and got me moving and singing". So much of my journey of self discovery since my teen years has centered around letting go of shame and just liking what I like, and I kinda credit Panic with some of that progression.
..and later on "too weird to live" came out with "girls/girls/boys" and forced me to reconcile some other things about my queerness that I'd been suppressing. The whole "wait... Do i want to be him or fk him?" feeling was strong.

As a 42 year old metal head, I have very little knowledge of how they started, or what type of band they used to be.
But I do think you might've skipped over Brendon's talent a little bit. In my opinion, he's one of the better vocalists of this day and age, and from the Death of a Bachelor album onward it's been pretty clear how gifted of a multi-musician he is.
I can totally understand that original fans didn't like the shifts in their material (it's what usually happens with fans and bands), slowly morphing into Brendon's solo work, but that's just how things worked out.
He also seems like a pretty stable person, as opposed to some former band members, so I think he just had the right combination of perseverance, talent, and luck.
I really hope he'll return some day with new material, maybe even with a new band, who knows!
