They definitely have the resources to make a handheld that could play the majority of new titles aside from those that are intensely graphically demanding - much smaller hardware developers are doing it themselves. The reason they won't is because they make more money from games, rather than consoles. Considering that their previous handheld, their forgotten bastard child, did so poorly, it's even more unlikely for Sony to turn away from promoting their home console in favour of a portable unit. Remastering a game, even without any resources except the source code, is way easier than having to chop up a full title to make it playable and optimised for weaker hardware, when the newest hardware will pretty much take whatever your engine can throw at it. For these reasons it's unlikely they'll decide risk investing in and developing a portable unit - even though i reckon it would break the internet
Still have my 2001 model with CFW + bunch of emulators up to GBA. I had to order new, OEM batteries cause the original one swollen up after 15+ years. Still love it today.
I don’t think there will ever be a general device this ahead of it’s time again. It’s crazy to think that 5 years before I had a smartphone I was doing a lot of this same stuff on my psp. It was wayyyyy harder typing on these things but I made it work for years 😂
I also owned a PSP and had a blast with gaming. It was a time when smartphone was being introduced in my country. Sadly it is now defunct. The only thing surviving is the external travel case😂
I have a Vita and it's basically a portable Ps1/PSP machine. I have so many PSP games on it. On a different note, I know this is a PSP video, but the Vita is one of best handhelds that no one developed for it. Gotdamn I know the Switch now blows it out of the water but for its time it has some really sick looking games. The only thing that sucks about it is that the selection isn't all that big when it comes to library. Still, I enjoyed P4 golden on it and Uncharted Golden Abyss.
I want to buy the play because it reminds me of my childhood when I was 5-10 now am 15 and I miss the fun of playing the psp at my grandmas house when I went thier with my cousins for sleep overs
I want Sony to do a new handheld console. With the mobile performance we have today, I'd love to see quality games on mobile (not f2p specifically like the avg mobile game)
I owned the fat PSP too and I would still keep it if it wasn't taken away after home burglary. I modded the PSP too. It was known as Downgrading back then, because that's what you had to do first before modding the kingdom come out of it, and you should have talked about it. Before Sony patching the firmware up to restrict the PSP to a game-only-device, people managed to make the PSP become lots of things (other than a pirate warehouse, PS1 games are amazing to play on the go btw), especially a Phone with GPS navigation by linking a sim card to the USB port. Sony could have capitalised its strengths and potentials to initiate the trends of smartphone (iPhone was released 2years later) or grab some market share off itunes. But instead they invested in standardising other weird formats like the UMD which breaks once you take it in and out of the box enough times.
Sony should make a PS3-quality equivalent.
PlayStation Vita

Have both my 2001 series and 3000 one, too. Way ahead of its time, I enjoy gaming on it & have some movies that look dope on the screen 🤙
