    • Michael Shellenberger ...
In this conversation between Zuby and Michael Shellenberger, they discuss the modern manifestation of religious impulses in secular society. They observe how various movements, from woke culture to pandemic responses, often adopt religious fervor. Shellenberger notes a softening of views towards traditional religions like Christianity, even among former atheists or agnostics.
They explore how the rejection of traditional religions hasn't led to the expected hyper-rational, kinder world but has instead left a void filled with secular, often divisive beliefs. They touch on media portrayals of religion, noting a lack of positive depictions. The conversation extends to the emergence of new secular "religions," such as the UFO movement, which draws in those seeking meaning outside traditional religious structures. Overall, they reflect on the human tendency towards religious or spiritual seeking and how it manifests in various forms in contemporary society.

Anyway, I'd be a little wary of accepting uncritically anything _these_ guys say - or that anyone says on RUclips, for that matter. But the idea that there's a "ruling class" which is anti-religion - rather than _using_ religion for their own economic and political power - is just silly.

Science has massive limitations and it doesn’t contradict the Bible. Essentially, the crux of my argument is this: there are inherent limitations to the scope of scientific inquiry, particularly when it comes to understanding the complete origins of the universe. This limitation stems from our inability to observe the universe from an external perspective - an insight which may not have been previously considered (I bet this bit never occurred to you). People who fetishize science seem to advocate for an unquestioning acceptance of the idea that it is entirely logical to conduct experiments within the very entity whose existence we are trying to ascertain. This is while they concurrently suggest that the universe spontaneously emerged from nothingness in a void of non-space. This presents a paradox that needs to be acknowledged in scientific discourse.

One of the features of the West that distinguished it from every other civilization on earth was the separation of religious and secular authority. This was imperfect, and the two sides overstepped their boundaries, but the idea of a balance of power was always there. Separation of Church and State was not an American innovation, but rather restoration of the situation as it stood before Henry VIII's state takeover of the church in England. Beginning in the 19th century, ideologies that required no check on state power began to emerge. The religious sphere thus became the enemy of the state, and governments began strangling religion to remove that check on their power.

The softening of formerly hardened hearts toward faith, particularly Christianity, is encouraging. I often found myself getting very frustrated throughout the last 15 or so years with the militant, aggressive atheism that has been so arrogant and condescending in its caricatured portrayal of religion. Disbelief doesn't bother me, but berating those who do believe was never a good look for them. They became exactly what they claimed to hate. Also, granted the fact that their worldview has had a chance to play out and fail miserably, I think a lot of these new, aggressive atheist types are eating an awful lot of crow in that they're not nearly as vocal on social media as they used to be. Hopefully they've come to their senses. Perhaps some may, dare I say, even find God in good time.

Of course God forgives you this is foundational!!! As believers in Christ, our righteousness is not based on our own works or efforts, but on the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, and more specifically, the finished work of Christ on the cross (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 3:22, Philippians 3:9). This positional truth is the foundation of our assurance. It reminds us that our salvation is secure in Christ and that we can confidently approach God, knowing that we are accepted, loved, and blessed in Christ because He has purged our sins and presented us without a spot to God (Isaiah 61:10).
Every believer is saved whether they have the assurance that they are saved or not. Our security is not based on our assurance, but assurance comes from knowing how secure we are (Romans 5:17). So we need to grow in the knowledge of what we have in Christ and what He’s done for us. This shifts our attention off ourselves and onto Christ, and this is how the “race” is run. We set aside burdens, cares, and sins that easily entangle us and look to Jesus. We are not looking at our feet; we are looking at His face! (Heb 12:1-2)

I answered the UFO issue for myself about 30 or 40 years ago. It has to do with the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world, the word made flesh that dwelt among us, all things came into being through Him and apart from Him nothing came into being. He is the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the Father apart from Him. One day there will be a new heaven and a new earth.
So we as human beings, created in the image of God, have a path to salvation and eternal life by being born again, born not of blood, nor of the flesh, nor of the will of man but born of God when we believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive Him.
The above is true. This is also true. There is one other form of intelligent life that we know of in the universe and that is: angels and fallen angels or demons. They do not have a path to salvation.
I do not believe there is intelligent life apart from these two categories. God is love and He would not abandon his creation and leave them without the knowledge of his Son on some far off planet.
Christ died once for all for the salvation of the world, so He wasn’t on other planets dying for them. It was one full and sufficient sacrifice.
He was, is, and is to come. All things - all things - came into being through Him. God didn’t make up the story as He went along. Jesus is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Supernatural sightings of what appear to be flying saucers or extraterrestrial beings can be explained by demonic activity in the heavenly places, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the powers, the principalities the world forces of darkness, the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Obviously the prophets and John in the book of the Revelation had supernatural experiences as well.
This is it. We really are that special. Jesus leaves the 99 in safe pasture to go in search of the one. He longs for a loving relationship with each one of us. Come, Lord Jesus come!

Human beings are designed for spiritual relationship. Everything and every state has a spiritual corelate rooted either in spiritual reality or a distortion thereof. In order for a human being to survive, he or she must observe or abide by a spiritual principle which has no justification for existence in a random//chance reality. It doesn't matter if one calls themselves an atheist or whatever... all have to submit to the particular, non-optional parameters that present as a consistent state of reality.
Religion is a standardized, codified, systematized approach to nurturing the part of human nature that can't deny its inclination for the spiritual, whether its called such or is understood as such. It may be personal as well as corporate.
There are no unreligious human beings. It may not be a common or corporate practice but it fulfills the same ultimate purpose. All that matters is what is the "reality" its based in and who or what is its god.
So, the West isn't destroying religion. If anything its encouraging the abandonment of one or more in particular. In so doing, it clears the way for another. One of the great deceptions is that people can be irreligious because that leads them to accept the untruth that the spiritual has nothing necessarily to do with them. In other words...that they can be neutral. No such thing or state of being spiritually.

Known by who as the "Dark Ages," the same kinds of thinkers that push trans-sexualism a "trans" concept borrowed from the "Dark Ages" concept of "trans-ubstantiation of the Catholic Church?
Russiagate was preceded by the fake news labeled "The Dark Ages." Let me ask you something, and I majored in the science 🧪 🔭 of biology at a secular university, I've heard the East of Eastern Christianity had the "lights" of cities like Antioch. This I don't deny, but think about that "framing" 🖼️ as they call it in psychology (the great classic propaganda film, "Birth of a Nation" was "framing" by Klan sympathizers). A city here, a city there, with absolute exclusion of vast swaths of rural areas between cities like Antioch and Alexandria "lights" for all 🤨. And in contrast it was said the "West" descended into the "Dark Ages" with scattered monasteries here and there? Hmm... 🤔
Let us consider that criteria. What monasteries did the Apache have? What great cities did the Apache and Lakota the have? What universities did they erect? What stonned Cathedrals with the architecturally revolutionary domes or simply artistic masterpieces of architecture did the Comanche, Apache, and Lakota have?
But so-called "historians" (an art on par with "The Birth of a Nation" more than a science) and "scholars" never call pre-European Plains of the now USA "The Dark Ages" before the Catholic Spaniards arrived (who transfered horse technology 🐎 to the Plains Indians).
The "Dark Ages" is one of the dumbest terms historians (centuries after those periods) ever came up with. It verges on being an oxymoron since pagan Germanic tribes sacked Rome, causing the city to fall from approx. 1 million residents to approx. 50,000 residents, resulting in a collapse of tax revenue and workers for infrastructure upkeep, and those pagan Germanic tribes the Romans called "Barbarians," thus how could Europe the have been a de facto "Light Ages" when it was full of Barbarians. Celtics, Vikings, Germanics, these were all white Apaches. Historians like to conflate a non-existent Europe with the Roman Empire. The Catholic Church created Europe as a concept and the Church spread aspects of "Rome" throughout Europe including the Latin Language, Canon Law it derived from Roman Law, Church Priestly vestments (which are modifications of ancient Roman male clothing), architecture like the Basilica, and administrative governance called "dioceses."
The "white man" today just ASSUMES prior to Catholicism all white men were just "naturally" brilliant and there were no white barbarians, that one united Europe existed full of learned, jolly, white people.
The Dark Ages do exist... it's called today's USA with massive homelessness, opioid epidemic, male prison r_pes and violence, firearms shootings all over the USA, and college educated population that thinks a woman can have male genitals and ejaculate sperm in another woman.

Very interesting topics. I agree that, at least in the U.S., politics has replaced religious belief for many. One enormous difference is that, on the whole, religious belief has a core of foundational unchangeable truths (love your neighbor, don't kill, don't bare false witness, etc) where politics is a constantly moving target which can be more easily manipulated. For example, the manipulation of the beliefs of the Russian people to accept Marxist values or the German people to accept Nazi values. I do wonder for those for whome politics is their "belief" touchstone, what would they believe if, one day, they woke up and there were NO political parties? No talking heads? No media telling them what to think? Where would the solid bedrock of "these things I believe to be true" come from?

  • @commonwunder
    @commonwunder 4 месяца назад

Many people misunderstand societal belief structures... 'fairy stories',
or mythic stories are vital to keep societies afloat and/or in order.
For two thousand years, Europeans believed in an all-powerful sky-cult,
father figure that looked after them.
It helped people cope in the here and now, with a short and brutal life.
It relieved the constant anxiety of the present, although more importantly...
If you didn't believe in it... you weren't part of the tribe.
Those that presided over it, had an immense amount of control.
Now that particular style of story Is no longer needed.
Life isn't analogous to it anymore. It has no relevance to modernity.
These societal 'stories' aren't about being 'true' to reality...they're only about,
uniting a group, or forming a cult. A common bond or unifying structure.
The only ones allowed ( or permitted ) must be benign, feminine and hope for,
no large or dramatic change of power dynamics. Then they're allowed to run amok.
Woke is just an 'ultra-feminisation of society' attempting to fill the void,
left by the absence of any meaning in the West at all.
As it is a 'weak' ideology, near formless... it is no threat.
As for nationalism it has been banned... for it always leads to fascism.
That's a strong form of unifying mentality and is outlawed.
It's the one ideology those in actual power in the West don't want.
They want things to remain stagnant, they like their world exactly as it is.
The reason Woke worked so well... there is no other homogenising force,
or system to hold the West together. People are desperate for righteous meaning,
a shared sense of a cause... a shared sense of purpose.
The cult of democracy is doing all of the heavy lifting right now.
It is also a light framework and is of no real threat.
Nothing else is allowed to blossom, nothing that risks real 'substantive' change.
That's why the West seems more and more meaningless.
It literally does't have a grand plan, vision of the future or any unifying purpose.
Again, this is the way those in control of the West prefer their world.
They know it is a dangerous strategy... that's why they spend so much,
of their resources on their military. Eight hundred and fifty billion yearly by the US alone.
The “axis of evil” or small-time ,despotic, authoritarian regimes of Russia,
China, N.Korea and Iran, see the West for what it is… a very sophisticated despotic regime.
Who’s own internal mythic ‘fairy story’ is irrevocably missing.
This is why they're circling, sensing seismic inner weakness and venerability.
    War is unfortunately, inevitable.

This was the death blow to the final Beast except that wound was healed. This healed Beast ( Satans imitation of our Lords Resurrection) attempts to accomplish what it failed to do in its earlier carnation.
