The history between them is just as crazy & widespread in Chicago. My grandfather & his 8 brothers & sisters emigrated to Chicago from Ireland in the early 1920s. There must’ve been some kind of program because a lot of the Irish men became police officers there. Anyways, the Chicago Outfit recruited the Irish police officers’ kids to be their rum runners & eventually recruited the Irish cops themselves which then gave them a complete lock on bootlegging. Why they decided to work for the Italians & not the Irish American gangs I don’t know but that’s the story that was passed down to my dad & to me.
Love the podcast love the stories I don't watch much on TV or internet but I do watch you guys man the time can fly by listening to yous and your story telling keep em coming

The person that hurt the mob the most might be Joe Bonnano I believe. His book gave Rudy Gulianni almost all the ammunition he needed to prosecute a RICO case against the five families at once. He litteraly gave all the succession of bosses from the beginning of the commission right to the late 60s, all Rudy had to do from this point on was figure out the rest of that succession

How did Gotti bring down the Mob when just today the Feds indicted around 10 Gambino members and they have been indicting members of the Mob since Gotti went to prison? I have always agreed with Michael on this. Gotti DIDN’T bring down the Mob. He did make it easier for the Feds to find out about members when he ordered everyone to meet at the Ravenite every Wednesday night. The Feds had no idea about a lot of the guys who were coming in on Wednesdays. They didn’t know that they were even in the Gambino family. John did put a lot of guys on front street which a lot of guys especially the old timers didn’t like.
It's true they didn't even really know much about Sammy until the forced Ravanite courts. Still though RICO brought the mob down along with a smart attorney who knew how to use Bananos book to utilize the act properly.
