The Curious Case of the Fake "Z DOLLARD" Toonie.

- Fake Toonies have been around for several years. But one stands out as perhaps the strangest of all. Discovered in late 2023, the "Z Dollard" Toonie, is beyond strange. It features a Walrus, an old man (who's not a King, by the way), and rather than saying "2 DOLLARS" it says "Z DOLLARD." This one is truly BIZZARE. Let's take a closer look!

There were 10,000 produced for a low budget canadian film most of them were destroyed after the production was finished, there were some that were stolen by extras and some of the actors. I remember having to search a bunch of people to ensure that we collected them after each use
I haven't heard that story. What was the film?
@CADRollHunter there have been a few all produced by companies like crystal films, CBC etc
Trailer park boys the big dirty. Maybe it's a Canadian movie about stealing change
@@TylerPelletier-e4c it was most likely from Bon Cop Bad Cop 1 and 2, Gerry, l'age des ténêbre, Human Trafficking
Awesome video full of great info. Why does the bank of Canada not pull these from circulation? Why do local banks not pull them from circulation?
Thanks so much. I think the Mint hasn't quite acknowledged the extent of the problem and, until they do, the banks aren't compelled to do anything about it.
I'm guessing this is a prop that was never intended for circulation
Throughout my 5 years collecting in California, the only coin I had found to be out of the ordinary (excluding coin shop finds) was a Gold-Plated 1979-D Susan B. Anthony Dollar, which unironically made me chuckle when I found it. 😅
This particular coin I'm sure would cause some folks to chuckle, and many to scratch their heads!
I have searched almost 200 boxes of Toonies in the last few years and have never seen one of these. I come across the camel-toes all the time but this is new to me. BTW I'm out on the left coast.
I suspect there are very few of them. I'm actually surprised that several people in the comments have said they've found one. I think I'd be shocked if I actually found one!
I haven't found one of those yet. Thanks for sharing!
Definitely let us know if you do find one! I think you might be more likely in your neck of the woods.
The rare Dollard Seal!! lol. Thx for the video James. Keep it real! (See what I did there??) total dad joke
Lol! I'll do my best to keep it real!
As a coin collecter, i am kind of surprised at the amount of fake toonies in 'circulation'. Great info James as always. Curious to know if any of them are collectable ?
They're certainly interesting, and in that respect, collectible. I have one of each date of the camel toe toonies. But I certainly don't need any more than that!
Dollard, with a "D" is a patriot in Québec (and maybe the rest of French Canada as well), and Victoria Day on the 3rd Mondy of May has also been referred as "La fête de Dollard -- Dollard Holiday" for most of the time, before they decide to attempt renaming it Patriot's Holiday in Québec. Attempting, because it can only be partially renamed that way, because it's still Victoria Day as well: "La fête de la Reine". There is a Montreal suburb on West Island, called Dollard-des-Ormeaux, certainly in his memory. The person who made the Z-Dollard put the D instead of the S certainly for that reason. And a thing that comes out of my mind is that somewhere in around 1990 or early 1991, I was still able to order old Voyageur nickel (or a chance for silver) dollars and my bank said they had $300 of them. When I came to pick them up, it was in a typical coin roll box, and someone, maybe the teller, wrote on it "Loomis -- Vieux Dollard" The person was mixed in between the 2, or didn't even know there is a patriot, so he or she wrote it with a D at the end not realizing this is a spelling error. I think I still have the box today...
That's an excellent point - it's likely that the "Z Dollard" was created to make a statement!
That was a great, informative video!
Thanks!!
Great video! I noticed on the specimen you had at the end of your video when flipped over to the "portrait" side, it looks like that copper part is barely pressed in; the lower right looks like it's sticking out past the nickel part.
Yes, the two parts appear to be partially separated.
Funny you post this I just found one on Friday at the restaurant I work at in North Bay, On. Not sure if a customer had paid with it or if it came in a hand rolled roll of toonies, (but I think the latter). I noticed it’s weird finish before I spotted the actual differences. I thought it was a camel toe toonie at first which we get all the time; I like to show those to my coworkers so they can see how they’re faked, but was very surprised by this one. All of us had a good laugh about it, even the restaurant’s owner, and I ended up keeping it. Another coin collector came into the restaurant later that day and I showed him and he was likewise baffled by it. The coin is very strange, light too.
My best guess is that it’s deliberately designed to be as obviously fake as possible either as a novelty, a film prop or as a form of deniability in case the people who made it got caught counterfeiting (that’s an old technique but more prevalent back when people were less literate)
lol northbay
It’s crazy that you found one in the wild! These things are still circulating. I guess many people don't look at their change at all! What does your restaurant do when someone tries to use a fake toonie. Are they just circulating as if they're real? (understanding that the general public has no idea they're fake and likely wouldn't even believe it!).
@ We don’t really have a policy when it comes to the fakes. If it were a fake larger denomination bill that would be a different story. The Camel toes circulate as if they were real they are so commonplace but like you said the average person just isn’t aware, and I really doubt people are actually trying to deceive us.
We get a lot of foreign coins that way too. Someone gave me an old British Penny thinking it was a loonie, or there’s those Mexican coins that look like toonies. People don’t know and they don’t really pay attention to their change, especially in a busy restaurant situation.
I wouldn’t be surprised if as long as the Queen Elizabeth toonies circulate that the camel toes or the Montreal fakes will too. The Z Dollard ones though will be noticed pretty quickly.
I've never seen the Z Dollard toonie before. I wonder if it weighs the same as a normal one. Thanks for sharing this, more to look out for unfortunately.
I didn't actually throw it on a scale - I meant to! I'll ask my friend to weigh it up - I just gave it back to him!
When the $2 came out, used tompunchbthe center and flip it around back in.
I think a lot of people tried that!!
Thanks for that. I'll be checking from now on. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Camel toe toonie ! Hilarious name ! 😆👍
Hey, if it works!
In Canada we call it the "moose knuckle"
That is awesome ! I want one ! Thanks eh
You and me both!
In the US it is the collector coins that are targeted for counterfeiting
There have been a few counterfeit coins actually meant to be spent, such as the semi-famous "Henning nickel" (named after the counterfeiter that made them), the "Micro-O" Morgan dollars (probably made in the 1940's, not to fool collectors but to be spent at a time when they had less than a dollar's worth of silver; they actually have too much silver, usually about 94%, and some contain tin and lead oddly enough). In Ecuador where they use the US dollar, counterfeits have been found of Sacajawea dollars; a few have circulated back to the US and made their way up here. So yeah, while counterfeits of US coins are mainly made to fool collectors, some have been made with the intention of spending them.
Very interesting, James! I am thinking a modern day token. The 1990 date could be the birth year of the designer or a having to do with a special event. The image could have been the designer. Could be a tribute to Adam Dollard des Ormeaux. Prop money looks like a winner on the google responses.
I'm hoping I can learn more. Someone here in the comments suggested they were involved in a film production involving these particular pieces, but I haven't heard anything about that until now...
I've never found one in my local coin groups, but this one looks quite interesting to collect as a novelty piece.
It is definitely a unique and interesting piece!
Art!
It's definitely art!
It looks like someone went out of their way to make sure people knew the coins were fake. There's too many mistakes to be counterfeit.
For sure - there was some madness to this method, I'm sure!
I doubt they were "mistakes" as they were clearly intentional. I don't think they were made with the intention of passing as real. Likely either a prop or a novelty that got accidentally spent.
Great video, too many of these coins around.
Waaaay too many!! Thanks for watching!
I've found most years of camel toe toonies missing 2012 2014 and Z dollard the hunt continues!
The 2012 and 2014 would be a different fake than the camel toe. I haven't found them either.
@@CADRollHunter Then I guess I'm down to the z dollard first one to find one buys the other a coffee? Annnnd Go!!
I found the ones with the polar bear on them I'm American I find them all the way down in Florida
Did you find one coin roll hunting? That would be pretty neat!
@CADRollHunter on the ground , or coin machine reject try
I want one of these ! Thanks eh
I have found one last year in a roll of toonies from the bank. I thought I would never find such a coin on the south shore of Mtl. At first, I thought it was play money!
I expect that's a very tough one to find. If I have to get saddled with another counterfeit, that would be the one I'd want to find!
The image of the portrait on the 2 Dollard piece almost looks like Abraham Lincoln.
It does look a lot like ole Abe!
I have been looking at my toonies for a while now and I found one not to long ago that might be a camel toe... it is 2006 and has what looks to be a z like line behind the back leg... the toes dont look to bad though so I am not sure when comparing to the website. Thanks for sharing. Happy Stackin eh!
That "Z" feature is on the legit toonies, but isn't perhaps as prominent. The toe is the dead giveaway, though.
@@CADRollHunter Thanks alot for the info my man Happy Stackin eh!
Lets go just finshed my 2024 KC3 set took like 2 3 months
Congrats - that's awesome!
@@CADRollHunter i finshed my 2023 set long ago
as a collector that is an oddity I would love to own
Same here!
I have one of these in my collection since January 24th 2024. I easily realised that the queen looked more like king Charles😭💀
Nice find!
Lol, good eye eh!
My gosh, it’s like the counterfeiters don’t care about accuracy anymore, just so long as it’s round and kinda looks like a Toonie then it’s good to go. The effigy looks like Lincoln from the US penny.
I'm very curious about how many were made and by whom (and for what purpose!).
It's like insurance if they get busted. They think, "Oh, we aren't counterfeiting because it's obviously not a toonie." It's a really stupid loophole that didn't work.
I got one from a roll of toonies. Too bad the one I have has a little rust on it.
Wow! Let me know if you ever find another. I borrowed this one, but not so sure I'll see another one!
This is the reason why I don't coin roll hunt toonies. I've done nickels, dimes, quarters and loonies, but not toonies. Not sure I ever will.
I get that - there's a lot of risk there of being stuck with a bunch of fakes!
0:32 I have one of those z dollard toonie and couple week ago i got a cammel toe toonie
0:32 couples monts ago i got one in my change so i keep it as a souvenir
Very cool find!
I found a walrus! It's in my collection
That's awesome! Great find!
I have the answer, becuase making your own coin is totally legal if it was for a team, group, or some sort of cult reasons, so this guy basically just made it look like that, so he wont be charged for counterfeiting.
Well, that's not exactly true, of course. But I'm interested to hear more about these "cult" coins!! lol!
My guess is that the "Z Dollard" was never meant to pass as real and were probably props that got accidentally spent.
Edit: and looking in the comments some people are saying precisely that lol, I guessed right apparently.
I'm definitely hoping to learn more about a possible film production. But it's odd - it would just be cheaper and easier to use real toonies, unless the design was integral to the plot...
I found a Toonie in a coin hunt (my latest video) Is it a proof? a fake? I'm not sure.
That was definitely a proof you got. A beauty! First year 1996! Thanks so much for watching!
It almost looks like a recarved buffalo nickel.
That looks like abe lincoln on the obverse. Very strange coin.
Yes, it does, actually!
Most register people especially at fast food would never catch the Z dollard
I think you're right. Most folks aren't looking all that closely!
It looks like it was intentionally made to be incorrect and not intended for circulation, more like a game token for an arcade or casino... or that movie prop comment.
I agree that it wasn't meant to pass, necessarily as a toonie, unless as some sort of experiment to see how closely people were looking at their change...
im a busker and get loads of camel toe toonies...never got a walrus though!
The Mint says we don't have a problem with fake toonies. Anyone dealing with coins on a regular basis likely knows otherwise!
Were they some kind of prop money? American movie money looks okay on first glance, but on second glance is obviously wrong. Kind of like these Toonies.
That's what's been suggested here, but I haven't seen anything to substantiate that claim.
Looks more like Abraham Lincoln then the Queen. Maybe it came from the United States.
I got a camel toe from circle k, I check all my toonies in store now, I'm afraid to get toonies from the bank, I never have yet
The fakes are everywhere!
They probably could not make allot because of the cost to make coins wars too much to mass produce
But I think they just wanted to make it for laughs
Very possible, but I'd think the cost to even make a few would be pretty high, with all the setup required...
Beans
Cool beans.
Some old Quebecor named Dollard with too much time on his hands lol. My best guess
I did a double take: Québécor is a news corporation, owners of newspapers and TV stations. You meant Québécois. (I will let go the use of accents if you don't have a French keyboard 😉)
I think he was trying for an anglo "Quebecer" (with an er), but yes Quebecois would be correct!
ive yet to find one and i want it badly for my collection! ive found a camel toe toonie tho!
I'm curious to know how many were actually made. I don't expect that I'll find one, but you never know!
hahaha.. good one. Made for a movie, it's a joke toonie. Why on earth one would like to own it shows the idiocy of humans. It's only good to throw in the garbage.
People do indeed collect props and novelties. But it clearly was not intended to pass as real.
@@troodon1096 good mention. I haven't saw it first hand like that. I
I think there are many collectors who'd be interested in owning one. But it certainly wouldn't be interesting for lots of people.
Cool video but it by no means had to be 14 minutes long
You probably won't want to watch the Director's cut when it comes out!
dollar in french is spelled with a D DOLLARD ..,. this counterfiet is probably from Quebec.
No it is not. Dollard with a D is a patriot though
