  • With it's MOT looming, I had to get the front wishbone replaced. And as with any other job on an old car, it was tricky to get off! Price was actually £65 and not £56 as in video (apologies) Also, spot the spelling mistake!! :D

Nice video, I'm a mechanic and the only thing I would say is, never rely on just the trolley jack holding the car up. Axle stand also and slide the wheel underneath with piece of wood on top of the wheel. Good video for the repair job.

Just removed the front wishbone from both sides, the job involved using a crow bar between the rear of the front mount and the washer/rubber bush. It was a nasty horrible job. How comes you had no problems with the removal on your car. I had to ask the local garages for their advice. I guess I must be working a car that hasn't been looked after. Oh hum! Now I have to put the replacement wishbone on the car, using a crow bar and protective washers on the new bushes. Never again, I will stick to working on old cars. I would have replaced the suspension on my Humber in a morning instead of wasting my time on a badly designed German car.

😄 Wishbones are never easy. Usually heat, hammer and WD40 (& a bit of luck) do the job. Keep the Humber running, good old cars 👍

    Fantastic video! Many thanks!
Can i ask did twisting the arm damage the rear bush at all?

Thanks. I sprayed loads of WD40 in but the bush looked fairly new anyway so didn't change it too. No damage was caused.

After three hours pushing and pulling and banging and braying I managed to get the old one out, but no matter how much greese I put on that hexagon shaped bar - I can't get the new one in. It's worse than trying to align a drive shaft in a bell housing lol😅😅

Thank you for the upload, just I thought on how to remove the wishbone. Now I just have to remove the toothed hubnut from the drive shaft to also change the front shocks. Also you put my mind at rest, because the track rod end on the near side needed changing and the person who did the job before put the wrong one on, and like an idiot I chucked the one I took off the off side and now it's landfill, at least the replacement one for the nearside (after I checked on the Euro Car Parts website was the one for the left. And someone had paid a garage to originally do the job. Thanks once again.

Found your videos today on RUclips after buying an A2 Tdi 75 , I wasn’t even looking for one but always an fancied one for the quirkiness , £30 tax and mpg as a daily runaround so added to the fleet of 2000 /2008 audis I have (5 ) now . Wiper fix was required , noticed straight away as sceeen scored
But I have a question , from your videos I don’t see this as having been a problem with your car but it seems to be on forums as a common issue with 1.4 tdi , my temp gauge struggles to move and after 30 min drive it just nudges 70 , the coolant is manky and I am going to flush the system and fit a new thermostat , then new coolant , just wondered if you have any advice from talking amongst other A2 owners .
    I am in Glasgow
    Thanks
    LOMAN

Hi Loman. You'll not regret buying an A2, they grow on you to the point of not being able to not have one!! :D If you joint the A2OC forum & Facebook page (links below) you'll find answers to lots of A2 related problems and questions. They're a real friendly and helpful bunch. The TDi's sometimes have a Webasto diesel heater to warm them up quicker or and electric version (which mine has) but should Ideally run at 90'c It may just require a flush and new thermostat. The wiper is a common issue. On one of my videos, I just put a screwdriver through the two arms and twisted it to clear the windscreen, It also doesn't scrub now either. Thanks for your interest & good luck with the car. Mike

You done it ! hard work but sorted. My TDI75 has just passed the mot well although I thought the front subframe was too rough, will get another and powder coat first before fitting then get another for the back as they are the only rusting issues on my 2001 car. Keep up the good work I would rather drive my A2 than my company VW CC.

I have this horrendous knocking noise on the same side and i'm considering just changing the whole ARB, drop links, wishbone to try and solve it. Only the drop links have been changed before but the noise always comes back. Any ideas?
Thanks for the video as always.

    • @garageofdad

Depends on whether it's a clunk or a constant noise, maybe a wheel bearing but good idea to change everything anyway, It's all inexpensive!

@@garageofdad I guess you could describe it as a 'clunk', particularly when going over bumps etc. Think I will take the initiative and replace it all as you suggest. Cheers!
