      "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." I grew up next door to Pike County in Letcher County. We love our mountain people. Mr. Childers is the latest in a long line of great performers from that neck of the woods. Patty Loveless, Dwight Yoakam, Chris Stapleton, Loretta Lynn and many more.

I’ve lost family members to drugs because there isn’t anything “better” to do and no work. Thank God some of them went down the mountain to better their lives. I was coming to the comments to say exactly that! lol As a Ky girl, I love that she's loving one of our favorite sons; Tyler. His "Down Low" is a real tribute to Ky traditional music in a more modern sense, as well.

    • @dysmaruuramsyd3233
      @dysmaruuramsyd3233 4 года назад +10

      Yeah, we tend to turn the Ts at the end of words into more of a sudden stop. So "burnt" becomes "burn" but with the n stopped abruptly.

    • @brianmathisinmontana
      @brianmathisinmontana 4 года назад +16

      The deeper you get into rural southern dialects you go, the older the version of English, generally speaking. The simple past burnt is not common in the US. On RUclips, look up Tangier Island, arguably the oldest extant dialect of English in the world. Sorry, England.

      @jamie vopni I love Johnny Cash, but he never sounded like Colter Wall. Cash's voice was a plain voice, representing the working man, hard and deep and expressive but simple.
      Wall's voice is sepulcheral and haunting, unearthly. It's the voice of the ancients, and all the more shocking because he's only 24.

"Long white line" and "the dead don't die" are absolutely great songs and there's 1 other I really like but the rest just seem to hippie/funk for me.
      People might like those other songs but it's not for me and I feel he could make some really great stuff. Childers has a great voice to and it's definitely a testament to the South. When someone from Appalachia hears a song like this we KNOW it's from one of us and it has a deeper meaning than when others around the world hear it. Similar to what another guy posted there's the south and then there is the rural south and then there's everyone else.

    I have seen Tyler live a few times. I discovered him and Ron Pope at the same time and they both are brilliant writers, artists and vocalists. They carry the same torch as that genius bunch Todd Snider, Fred Eaglesmith, Townes Van Zandt, Hayes Carll and Ray Wily Hubbard along with so many other artists in what I think of as a roots/folk scene. Colter Wall is in that group. God, I could name so many others but at the very core of roots music is Woody Guthrie, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark and Steve Earle. You can't half ass it with great stage shows and autotune if you follow in the footsteps of those guys. Shout out to the women too, Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn, Alison Kraus, Emmy Lou Harris, Gillian Welch, The Civil Wars and so many others. In fact Dave Rawlings and Gillian Welch's The Way It Will Be" in the diner is maybe the most perfect set of vocals I have heard. PS i forgot to mention the sheer genius of John Prine (Rest John) and Robert Earl Keen who can warm any heart no matter how cold. My spotify Sorta Folky playlist runs about 300 songs. So much great stuff.

    I might be Americasplaning this too much for anyone's wanting BUT Tyler is from Kentucky and this music is often thought of as Appellation Country, as be it for the mountain range, and what is a terrifying and outrageous true that is ravaging the rural white communities like the Kentucky Appellations towns is prescription opioids. These communities harbor hard working labor jobs and the treatment for hurt backs and intense pain from hard labor these days is scripts and surgery. When his dad tells him to keep his "nose out the pills" it is because he hurt his back working hard labor in the mines and knows the hell of addiction. This country music is the soul of revolution telling a story of personal anguish, hope, family, and of systemic problems that have gone ignored for too long. Tyler is American as it gets and I'm proud he is helping to carry this torch.
    That being said, if you want to go down a disgusting rabbit hole check out opioids in southern poor counties and in eastern major cities specifically in the poor regions and you will be angry for weeks.

    Most of his slang and the way that he sings his words is how people from Eastern Kentucky talk. He is from my hometown in east Kentucky. The emotion is there because every boy from that area gets what he is saying drilled into them from a young age.

    Warning: long comment...The original has almost 17 million views! This could be alot of guitarists listening over and over to learn how to play it but...something is going on here!! The lyrics remind me of "Simple Man" but it is "Daddy told me" instead of "Momma told me." This song has more gravitas which the patriarchal point of view reinforces. Musically, a classic minor blues, the a flat to e flat to f riff under the melody is haunting. I'm hearing that over an e flat to b flat to f minor chord sequence, so this adds some dissonance which further reinforces the lyric and the blues scale melody. And the production work is very high. You are not going to go in your garage and record a video like this. A small point---the guitar uses a capo on the third fret which produces a tighter sound and adds to the tension. Rebecca, you covered the vocal. Thanks as always. So considering these crazy times this song might be a good choice for a new national anthem here in the US and perhaps UK as well. We gotta keep it real!

    I live in the middle of a 30 mile radius in eastern Kentucky that has produced some of country and bluegrass musics best performers. Just to name a few from this area of Kentucky.
    Ricky Skaggs, Loretta Lynn, Keith Whitley (RIP), Patty Loveless, Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton just to name a few right off the top of my head.
    Tyler is such an outstanding musician telling the story of life in eastern Kentucky. He’s not singing BS he is singing the word of life in this area.
    Looking for an instant tear jerker by Tyler?
    His song “FOLLOW YOU TO VIRGIE” will bring the toughest man to tears.
    He has soooo many great songs and is unbelievable to see in person on stage.
    My recommendation for a true tale of rural Kentucky life would have to be “WHITE HOUSE ROAD”.
    Keep up the great work and I hope to see your reaction to the above songs.
