Last couple years as black people have been moving to this small town, customer service is going away and now we have to lock car doors and bring garage openers in because car break ins are happening a lot more. I used to change my accent and try to speak “posh” at work to fit in more. I felt judged by my cockney accent and had a feeling of being “less than” because I wasn’t educated at university level when everyone else seemed to be. Even as a white woman growing up in rural Illinois, when I went to visit family in the south I would change my accent.
If you take your suffering and transform that into a resentful bitterness, there is no limit to the amount of hell you can turn anything into.
I used to change my accent and try to speak “posh” at work to fit in more. I felt judged by my cockney accent and had a feeling of being “less than” because I wasn’t educated at university level when everyone else seemed to be. I grew up around black people in London and lived with black family for five years in a children’s home. I often got told I sounded “black” which I always felt was odd and that it came from a place of trying to cause me offence. People are weird.
