    To be fair, we can't compare this fight with Stipe or Woodley. Both of them won their fights initially from striking. Stipe was beating Francis in the standup even before the takedowns and Woodley took the fight to the ground with a knockdown from a big right hand, not from wrestling. So unless your saying that Khabib in some way can compete with Conor in the stand-up, I don't see how you can say we've seen it twice before this year.

      @aengusmckinley5457 6 лет назад +7

      You're mostly right, but while Francis was losing the standup it never was
      his style to win it. He would have rather scored a knockout blow, and the chances of which were not affected by Stipe being the more skilled striker.

      The point about McGregor's straight kick taking energy out of Khabib like we've never seen before was a great one. That and the fact it might tire Khabib out more than usual trying to get Conor in place before he secures his legs; if Conor slips a few it might well tire him less than it does Khabib.

    I just watched the McGregor vs Mendez fight. Mendez wasn't tired from wrestling or grappling - it was from getting kicked in his torso so much. Conor got up because Mendez tried to do guillotine - his G&P was working but I imagine he wanted to finish Conor fast because Mendez was winded from the body strikes. The commentators said the same thing.

    1) Conor only had a couple months to train, where as Khabib was training much longer.
    2) Conor took a break and wasn’t actively fighting like Khabib was.
    3) So that’s why we didn’t see the best Conor that night. A Conor in shape and at his best beats Khabib. He had ring rust, we saw it with one of the GOAT’s Jon Jones.

    Chael is the man he knows how to explain people simple think go with fight buz of mma

  • @adolfhotline3300
    @adolfhotline3300 6 лет назад +14

    It's all very simple. Behind all the faked rivalry, media mayhem, backstage bullshit, religion/heritage wars, manager bashing and the money (PPV) focused marketing hype, there are two very gifted fighters (21-3 vs. 26-0). I'll explain it to the casual fans, because digitally offending, trolling and yelling to each other like little kids is not very constructive.
    PRO's Conor: very very fluid on the feet and has one-punch KO power, amazing timing, reflexes and footwork, kicks are good but most danger comes from his punches, perhaps the hardest hitting stand-up fighter in this weight class, although Michael Johnson comes close. Just like Michael Johnson, Conor is a southpaw which makes it even more onorthodox (hence difficult for his opponents)
    CON's Conor: his groundwork, although he has trained intensively it's shit and will remain shit. He has had zero experience on the ground and in fact at least 2 of his losses were on the ground (Nate Diaz/ Joe Duffy). His takedown defence will be a bit better but if he's tired, he's going down against experienced wrestlers/BJJ's/sambo's. Conor's stamina is one of his mean weaknesses as well, he's gassing out fast.
    PRO's Khabib: very tough and gifted fighter with unbelievable stamina. Absolute beast on the ground. Once he's on top of you you'll be gone.
    CONS Khabib: his stand up is nowhere near world class. He's a hard puncher (no southpaw) but he is much less flexible and fluid on his feet. He can connect as well (as shown against Michael Johnson and Edson Barboza) but he has serious holes in his stand-up game that can be exploited by a strong stand-up fighter.
    Record Conor: although Conor has an extremely impressive UFC record, this record is flawed. He dominated the 145 lbs division but choose this division on purpose. He knew he was fighting shorter/smaller guys (except Pourier/Holloway) and he knew very well that his reach was going to give him supremacy. This was a very well chosen strategy by Conor in his rise to fame. He literally had to drain himself in order to make weight for this weight class (he looked like a skeleton in some of these matches since he is naturally a 155-er). If he'd started in the 155 lbs category i have my strong doubt he would have done equally well. This is why he got exposed relatively easy by Nate Diaz (one tap out by Conor, one split decision in his favour), although he completely blew Eddy Alvarez away (although i think Alvarez is a horrible fighter). Conor's main strength (whether you like him or not, you have to admit this) has been his unbelievable talent to attract hype and spotlight and to capitalize on this and therefore he has gathered a lot of casual fans that look up to him. However, although people claim GOAT status for him, but he's still far off. People like Khabib, Fedor Emelianenko, Dimitrious Johnson, Daniel Cormier, Jon Jones, Gegard Mousasi and GSP have way more impressive records than him. He has fought guys who were ranked higher in general than Khabib and his double weight class champion status is impressive, although UFC completely facilitated this by directly giving him a title shot. Normally speaking if you enter a new weight class you have to at least fight 2 guys in beforehand to get the titleshot. I believe that this double weight class championship status is therefore a big farce, facilitated by the UFC driven by money alone (not fair play against other fighters who were denied the same chances before that Conor indeed got). Conor is someone who holds his word and makes weight without pulling out, on the other hand he has always ducked contenders (ran to boxing to duck UFC fights) when he was still champion in his division(s) which is just as much a weakness as is pulling out from a fight card like Khabib did a few times.
    Record Khabib. Impressive record, although Khabib has fought against some lower classified contenders. Calling him a fake champ is just as much bullshit as calling Conor Mcgregor a current 2 time champion. Khabib at least defends his belt against a contender, something that could not be said from Conor. Although i have to admit that Khabib is more injury prone and therefore pulls out faster that Conor. In particular with the tiramisu, he's the one to blame for since his behaviour was very unprofessional.
    I see this fight going into Conor's advantage if he is able to defend the takedown in the 1st and 2nd round. If he keeps the fight standing and does connect, i think he wins the fight, possibly with KO. Against Michael Johnson Khabib was shook/rocked a bit and i believe Conor hits even harder with that left hook. If Khabib is able to take Conor to the ground, he mauls him and wins the fight. If Khabib survives the first 2 rounds in stand-up against Conor, he wins the fight because we all know that Conor gasses out while Khabib is often a slow starter. I estimate the chances to be 60-40 in favour of Khabib

    Omg Chael your one to talk about a wrestler not being able to win against a striker . Just look at yourself in both fights with Anderson Silva perfect example as your second bout your threw a spinning elbow and it was a mistake and it cost you . This will be similar whoever makes the first mistake will lose the fight . Simple your looking too hard into Conor’s wrestling or these “intangibles”

  • @pstarslr

    Chael, perhaps your insightful reminder of keeping an open mind while watching a fight could be another lane you could pursue for your well being. Judges are human. Bias does exist. Lack of knowledge exists. Chael sitting at a round table reminding the judging pool that a non striker keeping the fight on its feet doesn't indicate they are losing.

      Not at all. Conor has made more fans and more haters than any fighter ever before. He is the biggest name in the UFC. People want to see him lose as much as people want to see him win, especially against the guy who has never lost a single round, with the best record in UFC history, Khabib. For that reason many people want to see someone end Khabib’s win streak too, and Conor is the perfect guy for that.

    Ngannou and Till?
    I love you chael but you only see ‘striker’ as a blanket categorization cause you don’t get the art.
    Anyone will tell you, footwork that is non existent in most Muay Thai fighters like Till and non existent in ngannous amateur but nuclear abilities is a Pillar.
    Anyone will tell you that footwork, angles, movement, timing, placement etc etc are ALL more important than the strike itself. It’s why they call boxing the sweet science because while there are around 8-10 punch variations, there are infinite intangibles in their implementation.
    Conor is way more than a puncher and while I’m not trying to swing on his nuts here the truth is the truth and you’re missing a lot.
    If you think you have seen your opening and jump on it (like a single leg) and you were being set up by a guy with high level movement and footwork, you’re about to get walloped. I don’t know how to make that fact clearer.

      L 5 chael is an amazing wrestler and he is a master in that world in terms of his knowledge and ability, striking is such a different style change compared to grappling with massively different demands on the body in terms on the limbs you use, how you use them, stance, movements etc as such it’s hard to ‘get’, most grapplers never get it, take a look at any one of Chaels fights and it’s clear where his talent is and also where it is not, offensive striking and submission/choke defense.
      People overlook things or have an incomplete perspective some times, chael just inadvertently inferred all striking is (when pitted against high level grappling) is a ‘lucky punch’ which is obviously as false as it is offensive

    I'm not so sure you can't catch a teep/front kick. Some Muay Thai fighters like Kevin Ross are good at catching them and dumping people on their heads, and I wouldn't doubt that a good Wrestler with striking experience like Khabib could do it. Chad Mendez just didn't even try to catch them for some reason.

    • @luckyspurs
      @luckyspurs 6 лет назад

      Nothing about Khabib's stand up game suggests he's any good at catching that kick. His body position is wrong, he's not in the moment enough on his feet. He can probably eat plenty of them though and still have power.

  • @jonathandean4935

    I don't get why he doesn't think cardio will be an issue. Khabib fights at a very fast pace and has never gassed and even looked like he could go another 5 rounds after he fought for 25 minutes. Conor gassed against Nate within 2 rounds. The biggest gap between the two might not even be striking or grappling but cardio.

    • @luckyspurs
      @luckyspurs 6 лет назад

      Nobody's really hit Khabib enough to gas him before. He's hardly taken any punishment to the body at all.
      It's easier not to gas when you've locked the other guy and you can press full weight on him. It's tiring, but it's tiring the other guy out much more.

    Comparing either Ngannou and/or Till to McGregor is fucking insane. Two hype jobs with few actual accomplishments (relatively speaking) vs someone who's done things literally no one else has ever done, and he did it in four years. Unreal.

    Idk if I can agree with the strikers chance segment at the beginning
    Both examples of “if he hits him first it’s over” have been in the heavy weight division
    Both fighters in this case are way smaller and can last way longer
    Both are a threat to each other for the possible 20 minutes of fighting
    I wonder if it’s fair to compare the heavyweight division with the lightweight division (or are they middleweight/I forget what division they are in if someone could be nice enough to Inform me)

  • @mikecampanella1990
    @mikecampanella1990 6 лет назад

    Hey Chael, I agree but connor was a 155 pound champion before coming to the UFC. He fought another 155er at a weight that most 45ers are close to without their weight cut. Using that as an excuse for the first connor/Nate fight is silly at this point. He got caught and then shot a panicked double leg. He got mounted, hit and gave up his back and was choked.

  • @StevenHuynh3D
    @StevenHuynh3D 6 лет назад

    Great point. I've been saying that there are more intangible that others don't seem to look at. One being, Connor has home court everywhere he fights. Unless you are a villain type like "Kobe/Diaz" where you thrive off of hate. You will succumb to Conor's Mental game and the Irish brute numbers and force. Aldo, Porier, Alvarez, and Mendes are all good guys. Nate Diaz was immune to the crowd. I don't think Khabib can ignore the fans. He's worried about making them like him.

    We also saw a similar match up between Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero. Although Romero has crazy power even if he’s not a technical striker. He has that threat to go with his wrestling.

    Josh Thompson talked with Schaub about the single legs, its just to get the other guy defensive. I still think Conor TKO's him. He's beat Mendes, Holloway, Porier, Diaz, Aldo, Alvarez...and fought Floyd. That's a hell of a resume, all those guys make the hall of fame. Who has Khabib beat really? Edson Barboza and that is it

    Conor doesn't take punches well. People say it's a stamina issue, but that's not the case. Conor is always in great shape. He doesn't just run out of gas for no reason. When he gets hit he slows down. Watch him against Diaz and Mayweather. Don't be surprised if he gets KO'd

    The biggest tangible is it's a McGregor fight. For Khabib, this is his biggest fight by far. Most trash talk, most fans, most media, most pressure. Not even close to anything else. For Conor it's... what? Third biggest? Maybe second... maybe fourth, if you count his fight with Aldo. That matters.
