But on top of that, there was also a Dr. Who made for TV movie of some kind that I remember watching, and it was actually filmed in Vancouver BC. It was an attempt to reboot Dr. Who, but I don't think it really caught on. It had to have aired in the mid 90's.
Stu, you have no idea how lucky you are that you can just find this stuff in charity shops and things in the UK cause here in America, stuff like this is pretty much impossible to find because of how few people in the states would have actually bought it when it came out. We still only very rarely get new Doctor Who toys over here. If I ever was saddled with a reason to go to the UK, I'd likely spend all of my time and money trying to find stuff like this, just because of how rare it is here.
well, he did say a fan found it ;) I don't think you can find any Dr Who toys here in Denmark. The original show has never been aired here and the 2005 show is only available on a subscription channel that's only accessible to people with the right cable package, so most Danes have no idea what the show is or that it even exists
I remember having one of the briefly mentioned Wallace And Gromit sets, if I remember correctly the case was Wallace's entire head and it was themed after the moon and the rocket. It is likely lost to time but it was a cool toy.
In S58:E7 - “The Daleks Invade America”, I played the “surprised homeowner” who thought the Dalek was at my house to plunge the toilet. “Exterminate”. “Hey, do what you gotta do! I’d wear that full suit going in there as well - it’s a big clog!”
It's funny seeing the prototype in the box color the Davros section of the playset while keeping everything below it in minimal paint while the released one does the opposite in terms of paint distribution.
Bluebird was actually planning on doing a whole range of mini Doctor Who toys that included prototypes for a TARDIS playset designed after the Paul McGann TV movie TARDIS from 1996 (complete with the Eye of Harmony), a Cyberman head that opened up into a playset, & 4-packs of compatible figures, but this Dalek playset was all that came out of it, sadly.
They'd show Dr Who on our local Public Broadcasting Channel in the 70s & 80s. That's the only place where we could see BBC shows. So yes, many of us were at least aware of Dr Who in the states long, long ago.
Oh my god, I use to own this! My dad got it for me if I remember correctly, which is odd as this released three years before I was born - he must've found it second-hand somewhere. No clue what happened to it, but I thought it was SO cool how it was all contained in a giant Dalek - wish I still had mine!
4:33 - a clear demonstration of Daleks actually being pioneers of wheelchair-friendly accessibility ramps at venues and railway stations. Maybe that's why they're so angry and hate humans so much?
Vague memories of having a battery powered dalek toy when I was wee, can't recall much about it other than as with most toys of its kind it died when the batteries leaked. Probably why they were never included. I seem to remember that the bertie basset villian (candyman) met a sticky end in a puddle of fizzy juice, which makes it more memorable than the recent series.
Micro machines had loads of them from 1991 (car garages, race ways, etc) to the early 2000s when they had micro machines star wars playsets. Insane. But this was amazing. Doctor Who was off the air for so long when all these seemingly random toys popped up. Loved tm all!
Even though 89-06 are considered the "dead" years of Doctor Who the fandom was still going, the BBC rerun stories on BBC2 from 1991-1994, BBC Video was putting out the classic stories on videos up until 2003, and then the DVD's started in 1999. Along with this oddity, there was also a trading card game that came out around the same time. Talking about odd 90's toylines, what would make a fun video if you could find them would be the toys for the many Gerry Anderson series released in the 90's.
@@MondySpartan Oh I know, I still member Shakedown, talking about fan movies, lemme suggest "The Dalek Chronicles" here on RUclips, someone has uploaded an early 2000's CGI animation of the 60's dalek comic strip.
Back in the 70s and 80s (maybe even the 90s?) the idea of making toys for grown men would have been laughed out the room! No full grown man would EVER even have considered buying what they now call `collectables` (massively overpriced toys designed for adult men to play with in secret) in the 70s and 80s. Men were men and toys were for children. Crazy how things change!
Shocked and delighted to hear your favourite story was "The Happiness Patrol", it's also my favourite and I've yet to find anyone else who thought it was anything other than a write-off. In short, "I'm glad you're happy"
This is brilliant, I've never seen this before! There's some great attention to detail with the Dalek model and the Davros head, it's a bit strange that this is the Fourth Doctor since neither the Dalek nor this version of Davros are from his era but I suppose it makes sense considering he's the most popular classic incarnation It's also interesting that this setup of Davros presiding over a Dalek control room with a giant cannon aimed at the TARDIS has actually gone on to become a plot point in the real show, for the opening two-parter to Series 9. I wonder if Moffat had this set and used it for inspiration?
I don't recall the exact yeat, but around 1997 is when they released that Dr. Who TV movie. The one where at the very beginning the last Doctor from the original run dies and regenerates as a new doctor that was only around for the movie. Then 10-ish years later we got the new series. If the timing is correct, these might very well have been a tie in to that movie. My long scarf is at the cleaners.
Ashens I haven’t watched you in forever I’m so happy you’re still uploading and another Doctor Who video I remember the destroyed Cassandra video it had me howling 🤣
Bluebird toys are genuinely really charming to me. They've done tons of British franchises like Thomas & Friends, Wallace & Gromit, Doctor Who, etc. I remember seeing the Thomas set when I was little. Tiny things like this that are still super detailed (Trendmasters Godzilla comes to mind) are always favorites for me.
Back in the late 90's, they used to have "Sci-Fi Saturday's" on our our local PBS station every Saturday night at 10. They would show one episode of Red Dwarf (which I just finish binge watching) followed by a Doctor Who episode from the Tom Baker era. He was always offering his foes a "jelly baby" as a diversion. I remember the Dalek episode very well. "EXTERMINATE!"
I was born in 1990 and absolutely would've owned this, had I known about it I used to watch Doctor Who all the time in the 90s, either on UK Gold or on video
So... What I want to know... Ashens why have you been so quiet this year! 😭 Genuinely, as someone who isn't that all into toys in the slightest, I absolutely adore your content, from the Airphones, to Pop Stations you, your sofa and your stories are always brilliant content. I thought maybe RUclips just wasn't notifying me so I would check your site. Watch older previously seen content etc. My issue now is, if I watch it, it's watched. So I like to savour it for the right time. I can't remember which year, maybe last year, maybe the one before, but you did a Christmas stream. As someone who was alone that day, it was just really good to watch. I just want to say thank you Stuart. You make genuinely good fun harmless content and it's always good to see. You've nailed the format of your show and it's always enjoyable watching. I hope all is well and genuinely hope to see more regular content.
Doctor Who wasn't off the air entirely after it's cancellation in 1989. The movie starring Paul Mcgann as the 8th Doctor was screened in the UK on 27 May 1996. There was a brief cameo of the Daleks at the beginning (all be it only voices). Maybe the manufacturer thought it would be a good idea to release this Dalek toy not long after the movie in an attempt to keep the Doctor Who brand fresh in the minds of the fans. Much like the comic books, novels and various other merchandise did. I find this set is very interesting, first you have the outer case painted in the grey base colour with Black Sense Globes (Bumps). These Daleks first appeared in 1972 in the Jon Pertwee story "Day Of The Daleks" and they would subsequently appear in other stories including both Tom Baker Stories "Genesis Of The Daleks (1975)" and "Destiny Of The Daleks (1979)" Then you have a miniature Silver and Black Dalek which featured in another Jon Pertwee Story " Death To The Daleks " in 1974. The doctor who figure is the 4th Doctor Tom Baker (or in this case Doctor Elvis) which kind off makes sense considering the colouring of the outer case. But then you have Davros who did first appear in the Tom Baker era however in this set he is inside the Dalek emporer casing which didn't feature until the Sylvester McCoy story "Remembrance Of The Daleks " in 1988. The Emporer Dalek casing is also the wrong colour, it is in fact white and Gold but it does look good in all silver in any case. This set is a very curious mix of era's but it is a nice item all the same.
I remember having a Disneys Aladin playset similar to this that was basically a castle or just, a fantasy arabian house that unfolded into a bazaar and you could slide down the carpet or a character can jump into a giant pot and be launched by hitting down one of the vases in the bazaar, had it for ages, even after i lost the aladin and jasmine figures, but then it just went missing and i kinda regret not keeping track of what happened to it
I picked this up last Christmas and I love it, it's so cool having a micro doctor who environment. Shame the other sets such as the TV movie TARDIS and Cyberman head didn't get made.
At the risk of coming across as too much of a geek, the round, cricket-ball sized thing the Doctor is holding is the TARDIS's "gravitic anomaliser". He used it to defeat the monster of the week in "The Horns of the Nimon".
Davros was unable to walk, so he had a funny wheel chair with built in life support systems... the basis for his dalek units. Complete lunatic, of course.
The most impressive bit of tat in this was the Sleeper reference. I saw that on late night tv when I was in single digits, didn't fully get it and has haunted me like a fever dream for the last 40 years. "It landed on a turtle"
Fun fact, Moffat was going to include a poster of the Dalek movies into 'Day of the Doctor' where it would have explained that in universe the films were made after he'd told some of his adventures to Peter Cushing. However it obviously didn't happen in the final product lol.
It came out in 1997 possibly because of the Dr Who Movie that came out the year before and the plan for an American series that was ultimately scrapped
I seem to remember that they sometimes showed repeats of old series of Dr Who on BBC2 after it was cancelled, and I think they sold VHS's and stuff, so there were probably a few kids who got into it that way. They might also have thought that there were enough obsessive Whovians that would potentially buy it as a Birthday present for their kids/ nephews/ nieces/ etc whether the kids wanted it or not to justify paying for a license that was going cheap.
The toy designer assigned to draw up the Tom Baker figure clearly got screwed my google search and got a picture of Tom Jones instead, when he was nearly finished he realised his mistake and for some reason gave him a scarf and the face of Richard Hammond's mother (May she rest in peace.) and then went to the pub.
I watched doctor who on a public channel called tvo in Canada in the early 80s , it was my favorite but I didn't understand alot of it either. This daraleks creeped me out as a 5 year old kid. Would have liked that toy as a kid. Tom Baker was the best Doctor. Cheers 🍻 from Canada 🇨🇦
@stonecodfish2365 yes Dear aunt Agnes ❤️. I remember that scary episode too. How great was that generation of tvo . I had rabbit ears antenna on our TV in the country and only got like 4 channels. Tvo , global, cjoh(ctv) and cbc . Channel 7 CBS sometimes. Oh the nostalgic memories!
The weird, goofy, eccentric qualities of doctor who almost reminds me of what George Lucas was Trying to do with the Star Wars prequels. In the moment it feels pretty normal, but, a few years later, once you recollect the show, the plots all seem like they came out of a fever dream. So bizarre. And they put very little energy into trying to explain any of it, but at the same time it all feels so natural and it makes so much Sense.
Looking forward to your Advent team up, this year. You actually inspired a a friend and I, to do something. A long story short she moved up to Edinburgh, where I am and for various reasons we'd neither had any presents for many years. Last year, after watching your advent videos, we decided to do our own and came up with a master plan: 1) £29 budget, which works out at a quid for each advent day and £5 for Chirstmas. 2) You can try and get things for free, if you spend less one one day it can be carried over to another. 3) Most things have to be bought in charity shops. 4) You have the whole year to get all the gifts. It's made the whole year so fun, we've taunted each other with our buys, without saying what they are. But on top of that, there was also a Dr. Who made for TV movie of some kind that I remember watching, and it was actually filmed in Vancouver BC. It was an attempt to reboot Dr. Who, but I don't think it really caught on. It had to have aired in the mid 90's.
Your review of the 80s Doctor Who toys was definitely my favourite video of yours, extremely happy you're doing another one.
The apology joke at the end had in me in tears 😂😂
That Ukelele joke caught me off guard 😂
And selling for around £100 now.
Well now, who would want to play with a cyberman head. Er, aside from Matt Smith… 😉
The ukulele joke was perfect
Thanks for making these. Have been bit worried that you don't upload maybe as often as you had. Was delighted to see this on my notice feed.
They'd show Dr Who on our local Public Broadcasting Channel in the 70s & 80s. That's the only place where we could see BBC shows.
So yes, many of us were at least aware of Dr Who in the states long, long ago.
Been a long 2 months. Glad you're back, mate
This is so cool. I’ve not watched a lot of the pre-2005 stuff but do appreciate the old ones and this is awesome!
very cool :) i worked at mfx making daleks for doc who live , its in my profile pic lol , love the vids as always cheers for uploading again
Good to see you’re still making videos
Vague memories of having a battery powered dalek toy when I was wee, can't recall much about it other than as with most toys of its kind it died when the batteries leaked. Probably why they were never included.
I seem to remember that the bertie basset villian (candyman) met a sticky end in a puddle of fizzy juice, which makes it more memorable than the recent series.
Final 4th Doctor season outfit is an interesting choice since the outfit of his other 6 seasons is much more iconic.
Not only that but there were also novels, fan-made direct to video movies, as well as Doctor Who Magazine that continued its run.
@@MondySpartan Oh I know, I still member Shakedown, talking about fan movies, lemme suggest "The Dalek Chronicles" here on RUclips, someone has uploaded an early 2000's CGI animation of the 60's dalek comic strip.
that illustration of the Doctor on the packaging kind of looks like Patrick Troughton wearing 4's outfit to me
Back in the 70s and 80s (maybe even the 90s?) the idea of making toys for grown men would have been laughed out the room! No full grown man would EVER even have considered buying what they now call `collectables` (massively overpriced toys designed for adult men to play with in secret) in the 70s and 80s. Men were men and toys were for children. Crazy how things change!
Starfield ?!- wait what -
Oh this video is just 6 months old rather than 6 years.......
Ah Ashens, what a timeless video format .
Shocked and delighted to hear your favourite story was "The Happiness Patrol", it's also my favourite and I've yet to find anyone else who thought it was anything other than a write-off. In short, "I'm glad you're happy"
This is brilliant, I've never seen this before! There's some great attention to detail with the Dalek model and the Davros head, it's a bit strange that this is the Fourth Doctor since neither the Dalek nor this version of Davros are from his era but I suppose it makes sense considering he's the most popular classic incarnation
It's also interesting that this setup of Davros presiding over a Dalek control room with a giant cannon aimed at the TARDIS has actually gone on to become a plot point in the real show, for the opening two-parter to Series 9. I wonder if Moffat had this set and used it for inspiration?
Lol i was just watching those episodes from season 9 last night
I don't recall the exact yeat, but around 1997 is when they released that Dr. Who TV movie. The one where at the very beginning the last Doctor from the original run dies and regenerates as a new doctor that was only around for the movie. Then 10-ish years later we got the new series.
If the timing is correct, these might very well have been a tie in to that movie. My long scarf is at the cleaners.
Was genuinely just thinking about you, Stewart! Great to see you making another bit of content.
"Ask your local doctor who fan, he's the one with the scarf" I'll have you know I have a fez thank you very much
Mine's the scruffy bloke in an oversized fur coat done up with a bit of string.
I have this playset unopened, still sealed. It was nice to see you playing with it. I cannot bring myself to open mine.
I remember the small Street fighter 2 playsets from pound land in the shape of a SNES controller. I think I had the guile and chun li set.
So happy that you're back. Hopefully there's a Halloween special coming up or Christmas.
Had this as a kid and I loved it. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!
I was born in 1990 and absolutely would've owned this, had I known about it
I used to watch Doctor Who all the time in the 90s, either on UK Gold or on video
That Diddy Dalek inside the bigger Dalek is amazing.
I love doctor who Because it brings generations together, my grandfather watched it. My dad watches it. And I will continue to watch it
I was just wondering when we would get a new Ashens video & then we get Dr. Who as well. Amazing 😃
I remember having a Disneys Aladin playset similar to this that was basically a castle or just, a fantasy arabian house that unfolded into a bazaar and you could slide down the carpet or a character can jump into a giant pot and be launched by hitting down one of the vases in the bazaar, had it for ages, even after i lost the aladin and jasmine figures, but then it just went missing and i kinda regret not keeping track of what happened to it
Would you believe that 10 minuets ago I was thinking, wow I haven't seen an Ashens video in a while and then BAM Ashens video!
As long as he doesn't sing "Doctor in Distress" he can rap as much as he likes.
I picked this up last Christmas and I love it, it's so cool having a micro doctor who environment. Shame the other sets such as the TV movie TARDIS and Cyberman head didn't get made.
The legend has returned. We’ve missed you Stu
At the risk of coming across as too much of a geek, the round, cricket-ball sized thing the Doctor is holding is the TARDIS's "gravitic anomaliser". He used it to defeat the monster of the week in "The Horns of the Nimon".
Tom Baker looks like he's going to do Whovian karaoke in a Dalek. 🎵 Extrapolate, exasperate, exaggerate, ooohhhh, DALEKS! 🎵
Well, Doctor Who wasn't COMPLETELY gone. There was the TV movie with Paul McGann the year before this playset was released.
out of all things i could be expecting, none of them was a dig at colleen ballinger in the patreon credits LMAO
these videos were such a large part of my childhood
I've got the original magazine this was designed in. And wish I purchased at the time the little Dalek was great.
HE RETURNS!! I thought you might've kicked it considering your past, lol. Good video!
Had me worried there for a minute. Good to see you back
Thanks Ashens. You have officially made my year, and i havent even seen the video yet
I'm a McCoy fan. Remembrance of the Daleks is my favourite story of the classic series. Happiness Patrol is also a great story tbf.
The Dokta featuring MC Safety and the Caution Crew
Gotta love micro sets! Got a massive box of my old mighty max somewhere at my parents
We miss you when you don’t upload Ashens. Cheers for the years of content. It is truly fantastic
Dr. Who was also aired on PBS in the mid-90's, at least in the Chicago area
The Kandyman in his Kandy Kitchen .."Gilbert!;" Happiness Will Prevail...I'm a Doctor Who nerd. It's Dimension, it later became Dimensions.
"FUCK OFF" - Tom Baker
Sounds pretty accurate tbh
Last year, after watching your advent videos, we decided to do our own and came up with a master plan:
1) £29 budget, which works out at a quid for each advent day and £5 for Chirstmas.
2) You can try and get things for free, if you spend less one one day it can be carried over to another.
3) Most things have to be bought in charity shops.
4) You have the whole year to get all the gifts.
It's made the whole year so fun, we've taunted each other with our buys, without saying what they are. I lucked out for the Christmas day present as I found something she'll love, that cost me a tenner, that would usually be £50-£100.
Roll on December!!!
PBS had Red Dwarf and Dr Who all through the 90s over here in the US
I remember Tmnt mighty max n polly pocket being the really popular mini playsets in the 90s
As always, the back picture is painted much better. The TARDIS, especially.
