I always try and go before we leave, but we now take a portable toilet with us in the car. I do always try and scout a 24hr garage or supermarket within a short drive if needed

Mate,your lad is a spitting image of you,nice one mate.
If you are ever in the NW of England there are some really good free spots around winter hill and rivington pike, on a good night you can see all the way to the coast and across the the Welsh mountains.

You've got the right idea for car camping. Keeping it simple is the best option.
People often overcomplicate things and take way too much stuff.
I'm one of those arrive late and leave early types as it doesn't attract any attention. You seem to have found a really quiet spot so you shouldn't have any problems.

I went from being a single guy driving a sports coupe to being married with kids, and the first thing I did was sell the coupe and purchase a large estate car.
Both I and my 9 year old son now car camp around the country on a whim with a few essentials for cooking.
He loves the Laissez-faire element to Car Camping and I love the fact that he will hopefully have fond memories of such trips with his DAD, as I did when my parents brought me camping.
The best things in life are indeed free with a mix of preparation and adaptability.
Loved this video and the fact you're making magic memories for you and your lovely cherub. Happy memories of us as a family in the 60s driving from Kent to Cornwall for a holiday but sleeping in the car on the way and the feeling of being cosy and safe. Thanks. :-)

How to car camp. Get a car, buy a tent, sleeping bag, mat. Sorted.

Brilliant, the experience will stay with your Lad forever, i use a Roof tent to sleep, but have slept in the estate car in quilts, its a cheap stop over, you can spend the money you would have paid at a camp site, on enjoying what you want 👍👍
unfortunately there are more and more places your'e not allowed to park and sleep overnight...

Port Errol harbour. Cruden Bay Aberdeenshire overnights are allowed There is a donation box . The loos are open and are clean

For those who want to know where this is, it's Greenfield in North Wales on the river Dee.
It's a nice spot BUT the smells from the cockle processing factory are unbelievable when you're down wind from it.
Great video, it's brilliant that your lad is really enthusiastic as well.
The outdoors is good for everyone.
Blackrock sands in Porthmadog is a great place to go as well, some fantastic rock pools and caves to explore.
