Hi Your videos are very helpful.
I am looking for this certification a long ago. I have one question I am working on an acute medical-surgical unit, I don’t know if I am eligible for getting the work experience for 800 hours of diabetes education, whom should I ask?

You can call them directly like I did and ask. I also worked on a medicine floor and I qualified 🙂

Hi! Thank you for this information. Did you subscribe for the book information and printed it yourself? I would like to get the hard copy but I only see an option for subscription online

Hi Tania…as a registered nurse how can we prove that we have done diabetics education …do we need the approval from our managers or referral from managers that as a nurse she has done diabetic education in the unit ? Please reply if you can ❤

Hi Tania, I’m considering studying to become a DE. I’m just wondering how long it took you to study for the exam? I’m also apprehensive because I don’t see a lot of job postings for DE’s in the GTA. How long did it take you to get a job as a DE after completing the exam?

Hi 👋🏻. It took my at least 2 months to study for it, non stop. I payed for practice questions through this CDE pharmacist. The questions are very similar to the exam questions.

And ya there's not a lot of DE jobs. I was lucky to find one when I was searching. But I wouldn't let that deter you from getting your CDE. It looks really good on a resume 😊

    Hi
Whats the scope of CDE in primary health care in canada. I am in Sydney, I am experienced chronic disease management RN and CDE( independent medicare provider). I would love to have some insight into CDE scope in both primary setting and in public diabetes clinic in Canada. Can you transition to NP while working in primary setting ?

Hi! I'm so glad this video found you in Australia 😊. CDE has the same scope of practice as an RN would based on the CNO (College of Nurses of Ontario) competencies. I currently work (casually) at an outpatient hospital diabetes clinic while being a full time NP student. Hospital outpatient diabetes management is focused on endo and OB referrals with a mix of inpatient diabetes education when we get consulted by the physician to see a patient on the floor (usually type 1 and 2). Community diabetes care is more focused on ongoing management once they are at home (i.e. lifestyle, medication, helping to connect patients with family physicians if they don't have one). So I would refer inpatients to a community diabetes clinic for ongoing support. In terms of transitioning as an NP, my focus as an NP is primary care so it definitely does help a lot, especially when it comes to starting patient's on insulin. I find a lot of primary care providers are scared to start patients on insulin and refer out to endo when the patient needs insulin ASAP. Once I'm an NP I will be authorized to prescribe insulin to my patients and having the knowledge of a CDE helps me sooo much! I hope this answers your question! 😊
