I agree with him SO MUCH. A trailer should not show you the story that will be in the movie. It's a new, shorter story cut from the same cloth. It's purpose is to entertain and make you want more.
I agree-it shouldn’t show you the plot-just the setup leaving you wanting more.
BUT it should show you the essence of the STORY-aka the emotional core of what the movie is about and is trying to get across.
That aspect would definitely need to be partly demonstrated through setting the right tone of the trailer
When modern movies suck so badly that they show best bits in the trailer, only to get people in the theater seats long enough to break even.... its different than the old days. When the movie actually was good and trailer could only get you interested in it. I miss the old days.

Yes, Trailer Editing can be fun. I've seen some of the greatest modern trailer. Here's my top 5 favourite trailers, check them out and take notes if you want to learn the art of trailer editing.

The only trailer that makes me want to really watch Tar is that trailer at the start. Not saying it’s a bad or boring movie but damn that really got me hyped for something that didn’t really have me originally hyped from the original trailer
It's just that he is driven, doesn't matter how good you are, if you have drive, you'll get it
also: Are you thinking about feature films at all (as in editing): yes I think eventually I will direct and write a feature film (lol)

Great video and also happy for Jonathan. Just suprised how little you need to work in this field. Basically from no knowledge to top job in very short time. Maybe also mistaken here and his journey was way longer
Would have loved to see a workflow explanation. I've wanted to try to make fan trailers before but have no idea where to find all of the assets needed.
Pick a movie, rip it so you have the footage to cut with, then find free sfx to add. Look for things like hits, stingers, whooshes, suckbacks, etc. Then cut a trailer.
@@michael3448 the footage taken from movies already have music and sfx, so that's the trickiest part, so you have to find a way to remove all of that and then give it your best shot. I still have no clue how to do that tho, if you do so, I'd be glad if you let me know how to.
@@hsensn4677 Just bring the footage into an editing software and mute the audio on the clip. Then add your own sfx and music.

@@adrianpale2342 In most cases, the dialogue is going to be mixed in with the SFX and Music, so it would be hard to get clean audio. However, I believe some DVD ripping softwares will rip the 5.1 audio, so you would have isolated dialogue.

@@BoReynolds I was just having this conversation with someone the other day. I see it often and wonder the same thing. I figured maybe there’s something I don’t know as far as legal usage and how it falls under the “Fair Use” doctrine.

This is really inspiring. I do wonder what happened to Jonathan once he began working at GrandSon. From what I understand, none of the trailer houses use DaVinci Resolve. They use either Premiere Pro or Avid. Do you think he had to relearn his software?

Great video massively inspiring thank you! One question - the effect he does in the Starship Troopers trailer where the frame is split into 3, the alien appears to step out the middle section. It reminds me of the recent Ant Man film trailer, advertising the 3D version where the characters step over the letterbox - I know it's a masking effect but does anyone know of a tutorial anywhere?? Thanks!
Don't know of a tutorial, but if you know how to roto, then all you're doing is rotoscoping the area that you want to appear over the letterbox and place that layer on top of the letterbox.

Amazing story, gratz to him 😊One question though, you are legally allowed to use, re-cut and upload Hollywood movie footage to RUclips - no copyright strikes etc!?
It's a gray area. Technically it DOES infringe on copyright laws of the original IP, however, fan edits that are NOT MONETIZED on your channel are normally seen as promotional material in favor of that IP so they turn a blind eye in most cases. There are SOME companies that will get VERY protective of their IP in any form and have been known to send takedown notices and C&D letters as soon as they see their footage being used, one that comes to mine immediately is Nintendo (for both games and movies). If you monetize that fan edit on RUclips, you open a whole new can of worms.

As beautiful and talented the work clearly is. Personally, I don't think, or maybe I don't know if the Tar one actually does a good job of representing what the soul of the film is.

This guy would go crazy if somebody introduced him to After Effects. (At it's basic level) So much easier to use and endless possibilities compared to Davinci.

Davinci has Fusion. It's a much more powerful compositing software compared to After Effects.
All these trailer are just very well done shots ( credit to shooting team)
Editors job is to throw all these strings or pianos or whooshes and combine good shots. Not that hard when u have a good initial material. Very rare u can see some creative trailer
You're underestimating and misunderstanding editing. Half the story is told through editing. Technically, there wouldn't even be any story without proper an edit.
You have no idea what you're talking about honestly. If it's so easy, everyone would do it, but instead there are a few hundred trailer editors making lots of money to cut studio films trailers. You make it sound like there is no thought put into what shots do use, in what order, and how long to make them.

@@Jaa_morant Yes, trailer editing brings great money if you are working at a real trailer house working on studio films. They aren't just cutting theatrical trailers, they are also cutting 15, 30, and 60 second TV spots. The demand is high if you are talented. They get that job by starting off at the bottom at a trailer house, usually in the machine room, or as an assistant editor. From there you spend your free time cutting your own spots for practice, and then when the producers think you're ready they will let you cut actual spots. Then once you're talented enough that they want you spending your time cutting, instead of assisting, they'll make you an editor and then you cut spots and trailers full time. It's a grueling process, but it pays a lot of money.
@@michael3448 I bet it’s really hard from a cognitive point of view right? Sometimes u just can’t come up with the right sequence and stuck for days.
@@Jaa_morant I think the hard part is figuring out what story you want to tell within the trailer. The idea isn't necessarily to give a synopsis of the film, the idea is to find an interesting story to help sell potential viewers on the film. Coming up with the actual cut isn't as hard, as there is sort of a formula that can be followed. The biggest part is the sound design, which consists of the dialogue, the voice over (if any) and the music and sfx.
found the trailers rather overdone and tiring, it's not about how many different ideas you can cram into a piece
While the videos are cool and his editing is great, I disagree with much of what's being said here. After watching all his trailers, I think they fail at the most important job for a trailer, which is to motivate someone to watch the movie. I'm not sure if any really accomplish that. These are more stylistic edits that involve movie content.

Sampling is nothing new. Was looking closely for originality, none. He thinks he made a Matrix vid.
