  • Went for a blast up the Ashley gorge today not really enough water at 5.8 cubic meters a second, plenty of rocks to hit though. Put some more dents in the hull and a small hole in a seam where the side and bottom are welded together. Couldn't go down stream as three people from NIWA had some nets set up for an invertebrate study so I headed off to the Waimak.

    I think google is listening in on my phone when I’m not on it. While I have watched vids on these boats before, I haven’t in quite some time. But I did talk to my wife about building one while we were driving somewhere today, and all of a sudden this is in my recommend list. I did not look up anything online or on RUclips today concerning this topic. There are no coincidences in life.

    Great vid dude! I want to make one of these myself and was wondering what kind of impeller you use? Also I noticed that all of these boats have a rope running from the bow to where you sit, would you mind telling me what that’s for?

    • @RichardStreeterYZ450FX
      @RichardStreeterYZ450FX  4 года назад +4

      Hi there,most of these small jet boats running jet ski engines run the standard stainless impellers, which wear out very quick when you are pushing a lot of stones through the jet unit. I had installed a very thick twin row one from Saco water jet ( www.sacowaterjet.com/impellers.html ) the top one in that link, cost $1400 odd NZ dollars, Ilost around 5 kph on top speed as it was so heavy but had way less cavitation when the bottom of the boat came out of the water (top speed came down to 65 t0 70 kph ) Your not pulling the impeller out anywhere as often to have the edges rewelded and ground to fit pump was costing $150 each time. The bow rope is there to tie up when your not in the boat to stop it floating away, was told I need to add a float to the end of the rope so when I sink the boat it's easier to find. Life is short do it and get or build yourself one you'll have a lot of fun. Check out some of my other videos some are long but good, Cust river is very narrow and shallow and Okuku river, Waipara river has a boat flip and sink around the half way mark. Cheers Richard

      The reason you would put a float on the bow line is not so its easy to find..the float is so the rope will float and not get drug under the boat and tangled in the impeller...

    Very good Congratulations! What is the brand of your engine, power in hp, brand of your jet and what speed does it reach? I intend to make an aluminum boat to fish in the river and use the Johnson / Evinrude 35 hp 2 stroke, 575 cc and 5500 rpm engine powerhead. Thank you very much for the answers! Hugs from the Brazilian Amazon!

      Hey there Cadu, this boat is 3.2 meters long, it's running a 1998 Kawasaki tripple cylinder two stroke 1100cc jet ski engine with the jet ski jet unit, with around 120 hp it would get up to 80 km/h going upstream. That's awesome that your going to build your own boat, with only 35 hp you wouldn't want the boat to be to heavy as it may struggle getting up and planing on the water. Good luck with your boat build. Cheers Richard

      @@RichardStreeterYZ450FX Dear Richards! I appreciate the advice and guidance. my fishing boats are flat bottomed and are built with a 2.5 mm plate thickness and 5.40 meters in size. They are lightweight and when using these Johnson 35hp outboard engines, they sailed with 3 people at around 40 km / h. Unfortunately the tail of this engine is bad and breaks, I thought of using only the powerhead on the 7 boats that I already have. do you believe that i can reach the same speed with this hydrojet power head? Otherwise, I will have to choose a VW 1.6 cc and 110 hp and maximun 4.500 rpm vehicle engine with electronic injection and dry sump with an external oil pump, but the car engine option is a high investment. What is your opinion? I am grateful to have answered and I hope I am not bothering you. Regards, Cadu

      @@cadu6267 Hey there Cadu, I don't know anything about the Johnson outboard engines, if it was me I'd do it once and do it right the first time I'd go with the VW engine it won't be working as hard and should last longer and give better performance and possibly better fuel consumption. No your not bothering me it's good to get ideas from a few people as they may think of things you've overlooked. Cheers Richard

    • @RichardStreeterYZ450FX
      @RichardStreeterYZ450FX  4 года назад

      Hey there, a lot depends on how much money you want to spend the Kawasaki 15f is a popular choice for these small boats, I'm sure Yamaha and Seadoo make good reliable four stroke engines. Some use small car engines but I'd guess they're heavier than a jet ski engine, I'd also aim for 150 to 200 horse power, some of these jet ski engines are turbo charged or supercharged.Cheers Richard

A bare hull already welded up is between $5300 to $8k depending on length and make, then add another 8 to 14k for a jet ski engine and pump. It's a lot of fun I've sold this boat but I'm on the look out for another one. Cheers Richard
