We had to move in -2 degrees. Makes me feel good now we are having a heat wave of 38 degree. Please stay warm. We have propane too.

Living in a very cold climate does indeed have its challenges. Engine block heaters, heat tapes, etc. are great friends. I dont let my husband outside if it's below zero as he can't breathe very well as he only has one lung. I do all the snow removal and maintenance in winter. We live in Northern Wisconsin. My dog also only goes out long enough to potty and i put baby socks on his paws to protect him from his paws being injured. He also gets a winter jacket put on him.

You are so right! I live in the midwest and it has been 16° here and it's all I can do to go put the chickens up at night. I rake leaves through the fall and put them in the chicken pen and in their roost as it gets cold and that keeps them warm. They hover together and stay warm in the leaves. We also keep corn on hand being that it warms them up. We too had an earthquake two weeks ago. We may get some snow on Saturday. You are an awesome lady and I appreciate your vlogs! Happy Valentines Day To You And Your Family❤

I so appreciate what you said about temps feeling different based on where you are! I moved from a very warm humid climit to a cold/snowy climit but the cold hasn't bothered me at all because like you said, it's so insulated. Back home, our lil ole heat pumps freez up when it gets in the 20s and below and pipes are always a concern- and even when you turn up the heat it still feels cold cause like said, built for cooling. Up here it's the opposite. I'm from a place where it's 100+ and humid half the year but was STRUGGLING here when it was unseanonably in the 80s and 90s last fall because there's little air conditioning and very insulated homes. Like you said, we were melting! Weather is all relative! Places not built for winter can't winter very well and vice versa. I almost never hear people put it that way like you did, perfectly said!
As was the "deal with it" people! tbh, even though I grew up in a hot environment the heat never became more...enjoyable? No matter how used to it I was. Sleeping when it's 100 heat index at night and full humidity never gets funner. Not being able to breathe outside sucks a lot of fun out of summer. Being used to a hard thing definitely doesn't make it easier, like having a chronic condition. I can't imagine growing up in Alaska weather since it's so different but I know how hard the deep freeze, lack of sun etc is on your body, your cars, everything. Winter is a huge struggle! A huge, long, struggle and that's valid.

I really enjoyed this vlog. It was interesting and informative. I agree with your opinions on weather. I live in Indiana, and this winter we had 10 days of single and negative digits. It was tough on everyone. However, we do not think much of 90 degree weather in the summer. We either find a pool, a beach, or we stay inside with AC. I am amazed that at -40+ degrees, Alaskans still do life🥶 Can’t believe schools are still open 😮

I freeze lots of leftovers. It's nice to just grab something quick & easy sometimes. With chili I cook a big pot full, like 2-3lbs hamburger, several cans of beans & tomatoes. I also use Heinz chili sauce & French's chili-o chili powder. What we don't eat in 2 or 3 days I freeze the rest. I love seeing all the stuff you cook, everything always looks delicious. I couldn't imagine the temps you all have had. Here in Ohio we've had very little snow so far(maybe 8 inches total from a few snow falls).

I do the same with ground beef. I often find it on special marked down as the sell by date is the next day or sometimes real cheap being the same day. If I can't cook it up right away I will put it in a zip bag and write on the bag the day I put it in the freezer so I know it only had a day left or whatever. When I have time I will cook it up and separate for spaghetti sauce, taco meat, chili, sloppy joes or make meatballs if I have a lot. A fun thing my son finds fun is putting a pound to pound and a half in a gallon zip bag. Smash it flat to the size of the bag. Score with a butter knife to make 4 burgers. Yes, they are square. Freeze flat. You can do whatever with them after frozen. On burger night you can break off the patties or even do 2 if it is just the two of us as they break of in perfect squares when frozen. He calls them Wendy's burgers! Yeah, we waist zero meat around here and love getting great deals.

When I don't have quite enough ground beef for a recipe, I throw in a can of lentils. You can't see them, they take the flavours you put with them, and they stretch the meal while adding protein and fibre. I always have a few cans in the pantry for such occasions!

As for the chili have you tried adding a big jar of mild salsa ( my family loved the hot salsa) that way i didn't have to by onion, peppers, tomatoes.

Anyway we stood at this place with a HOT SPRING lake on the property the temp was 60* one day we were all freezing but the workers were all walking around in shorts and short sleeve tops.. My daughter took a picture of herself all bundled up and two works in the background dressed as if it were summer..Summer temperatures where i live are like 114* ..60* - 65* is cold for use..

I was thinking the same as Lance about your car. It was so cold that it needed to run awhile. I had never felt an earthquake here in NC mountains until a couple years ago. It shook the whole back of our house. Caused new trim to pull down a little and broke kitchen floor tiles loose. It was so scary. Good tip on the baking soda in the chili. Question, do you use the baking soda in tomato sauce as well? I generally put 1/2 & 1/2, and a little raw sugar in my tomato sauce. I wonder if baking soda would work. I foodsave as well, and there are days I'm lazy and don't want to pull out my food saving machine. I will take a freezer bag, put the ground beef in the bag, flatten ground beef in the baggie with my hands or a rolling pin, making sure the air is out of bag, and seal by hand. This allows me to store more in food in the freezer. I can stack all kinds of flat bags in on top of one another. It also makes it easier to remove the meat from the bag, and it thaws faster.
We have to crawl under the house and plug in the heat tape for winter for our well. Hubby noticed he's going to have to replace it before next winter.....I refuse to get under the house (you have to belly crawl....we have an old farmhouse). I hope your heat tape works, and you don't have to replace it any time soon.
I hear you on brushing your teeth, washing up, getting dressed to get your day started. I push myself to do this to feel better, and to be there for my family. I know you do the same!!!

Heat tape? Never heard of it. Being from NY now residing in FL, our NY homes were made to keep in heat but we never got cold like AK for a long period of time plus houses were built not to be kept cool on its own in the summer unless you had AC. In Fl, AC most of the time but the last month been nice so we have windows open letting in pollen.😮 50 degrees people have jackets, hoodies, ect. Not for us. I’m like your brother, t shirt no matter the weather. We had an earthquake here last week that we felt. Was off into the ocean. Plus we had sonic boom. We had earthquakes in NY but not major. Thanks for explaining what needs to be heated in a vehicle that cold. Are new vehicles sold in AK ready for winter weather there? I don’t like that about Dodge the two time only auto start. This was a great video. Thanks for sharing.

Oklahoma had a 5.1 earthquake on February 2nd. People are surprised that OK has a lot of earthquakes but ours are not natural. The earthquakes here are due to fracking caused by drilling for fossil fuels. I agree Jessica they are very scary! I’ll take a tornado over earthquakes and hurricanes any day. I guess it’s what is familiar so it’s not as frightening.
