  • We filmed this BACK IN MARCH 2023 🤣 but both @yehoshua2099 and I kept having other priorities pop up so it took us until now (mid-summer) to both post our videos 🤦‍♂️
But hey, they're both live as of... now!
NotJustBike's and Shifter's question is "Why don't more people cycle to the hardware store in Canada?"
Well, people DO bike around a lot (even in the winter) - especially now that there's dedicated infrastructure in place!
But it's not the most enjoyable experience because of the plentiful amount of stroads and MASSIVE parking lots that decrease density (and a bunch of other negatives). BUT it IS possible to safely bike to the Home Depot in this case.
In this collab with Yehoshua (in Toronto), we take the basketball game of "plus 1 minus 2" and bring it to urban cycling as a way of comparing a similar ride between Fake London (Ontario, Canada) and Toronto.
Watch Shua's side of things in his video here: • plus 1 minus 2 urban c...
Unsurprisingly, there's a lot left to be desired but compared to 10 years ago, things have come A LONG WAY and it's very exciting to see!

I did not know what elephant feet were or how they were to be used. Good to know! I have to admit that I will use the sidewalks as well- I’m motivated by bad / thoughtless drivers and the fact my kid is on the bike with me😊

The good news is that you having your kid with you should help humanize you to drivers (and thus keeps you from being harmed)!
Hopefully safe infrastructure will improve near you in the coming years! Let your ward councilour know, no matter where you live :)

When it comes to those problematic bus stops in Toronto, what makes the design more confusing is that even American cities know not to have the bike lane between the bus and the bus stop. Out in Mesa, Arizona, the bus stop at Alma School Road/10th Street has the bike lane (2-way bike path) behind the bus stop. In nearby Tempe, there are 2 streetcar stops that needed similar treatment (6th Street/Mill Avenue and 3rd Street/Mill Avenue), with the added bonus of the crossing from the stop to the sidewalk being raised to sidewalk level. With most bus stops that conflict with bike lanes, the bus either goes on the bike lane, or there’s a pullout between the bike lane and sidewalk.

As a cyclist (newly re-activated haha) and a London resident I just binge watched a ton of your videos. Love seeing the input and perspective of a city that I’ve lived in for so long!

being a cyclist in canada is being a second (or even third after pedestrians) class citizen : car supremacy is in full force and you gamble with your life 'every' time you take in to streets, I;m not sure Canada can repair this car centered society, I won't hold my breath. Canada is disappointing

It is always fun asking people where you can get (bike) parking, because so many people don't know. You have to politely excuse yourself and wish them a nice day, but my hope is that they end up thinking about it.

Seeing this, I can understand, why NJB likes to use London, ON as a bad example - that's really no great infrastructure (and now many Americans would say "hey, they at least have _something_…". Snow maintenance can also use some improvement (I've seen impressive results from Montreal, even on protected bike lanes!).
The one on Toronto starts really good (very similar design to what's common here in Germany, except people waiting at bus stops are used to this - probably because they got there by bike themselves - and don't stand right in the path), but then things go down very very far. And if some aliens will ever visit us with their intergalactic space ship, there it a parking lot big enough for them…

There are only two bike racks here in Hopkinsville, Ky. One is down behind the library, and the other is at the only bike shop in town. I saw a few things that could be bike racks, but I not sure. Not a whole lot of people getting around on bicycles, so city planners don't really see the need to build the infrastructure, but, they sure go blue in the face, promoting bike riding.

Why can you move the bike rack?
You are supposed to lock the bike to something immobile.
That bike rack should be bolted down.
What's stopping someone from loading the bike rack and all the bikes attached to it into a van and taking off?

In the UK, toucan crossings are allowed to be used by pedestrians and cyclists. The difference between pelican and toucan crossings is the toucan crossings have a bike icon on the pedestrian traffic light, while pelicans do not.

I get this technically was still in Toronto, but maybe you should do one in at least midtown toronto where there is good bike infastructure, instead of the outskirt suburbs of Toronto where its on the border with york region. Other than that, great video Ben!

There is no excuse for suburb areas like this to not have good infra. There is so much space it’s embarrassing how bad the bike infra is and this should be highlighted and shamed more often.

Great video. To bad you had to ruin it with sucking up to Not Just Bikes by calling London 'Fake' Its the name of the city. There is nothing 'Fake' about it.

Great comment. Too bad you had to ruin it without understanding that I'm a small channel and have to jump on to trends to slowly grow my audience. You might've not happened upon this video without me having titled it this way.
I hear you, though, and I've been moving away from mentioning Fake London as often.
I mean, I live here too so I'd like to not call it Fake London as much as you 😆

@@BenDurham Oh I total get that 'clickbait' titles get the views.. (I was already a subscriber from your great videos of the new London bike lanes and eKick Scooter saga) Just the 'fake' really rubs me the wrong way when these are great videos with important information about how we can improve the city we live in. Makes the video and information seem less valuable or reliable. Still a subscriber.

I live in an American city with even worse issues with biking infrastructure. Most of the city is just entirely inaccessible if you don’t want to be using the backroads the whole time. There is an ongoing project to make a separated bike path along a major road near where i live, though. Ive used it a few times, but I almost never see anyone else using it. The city has been car-centric for so long that no one even thinks to bike, and very few use the buses (our only public transit).

Forty kilometers all throughout the city is only going to increase driver frustration, resulting in driver's making more aggressive moves and taking more risks, putting cyclists and pedestrians at greater risk. Don't blame cars for the city's failure to build proper isolated cycling networks.

    • @cyclingmel
      @cyclingmel Год назад +1

That is extremely insulting to drivers haha. A difference in speed that most people can't even notice is going to cause all these problems? A speed that most drivers are driving at anyway due to congestion from the amount of cars on our roads? Sounds more like drivers just don't want to give up one tiny bit of the road space they've been hoarding for the last thirty years even though it would make everyone's lives better.
