It's been 2 weeks now since I first heard of Ren!! Not a day has gone by where I haven't listened to another new piece of his music!! This song I listen to at least 3 times a day. I love the line in Chalk Outlines that says "In the gallows I'm balanced on my toes so I can breathe". So powerful!! Chinchilla's voice is also so outstanding!!! Ive really enjoyed your reaction!!! I have been watching Ren performing live for seven years and know how amazing his voice is but Chalk Outlines is my favourite of all his songs.
Not only is it hauntingly beautiful but it is also encouraging other people to examine and share their own mental health issues.

Thank you Sean. Ren and Chinchilla did another one of his songs together, How to be me. That is absolutely stunning and needs to be on every sad playlist on the planet. Now that I started listening to your own music, I think you might really enjoy Genesis, Power, and Everybody Drops. I really love Heretic and Humble as well. And yes, the Big Push stuff is musically amazing too.

Love the way he is not scared of giving space in his music,( the rap & hip hop, stuff is different again) . I also love that he might use effects, but stays away from auto tune.! The fact that this track, “sick boi” are single take, & live is amazing. He scopes out the locations, as his ear is so well tuned to natural acoustics! He brings so many different styles. All on his own terms, he is what a true “ independent artist is”,I hope he can make some coin, & get healthy. Lymes disease if not caught early can be life long!

This was a very enjoyable reaction. "Chalk Outlines" touches me deeply no matter how many times I watch this video or hear this song. I can very much relate to this and many of his other songs as they describe my daily struggle over the past 25+ years. Ren has been able to express through his songs what I have been unsuccessfully trying to communicate to others regarding my mental, emotional, and physical struggles. I would recommend you also check out Ren's other collaboration with Chinchilla, "How to Be Me" live version, as well as their busking sessions in Brighton. As for "Chalk Outlines," it is one of my favorite songs right now; it is beautiful yet sad.
The studio version is also incredible. However, in my personal opinion, it does not come close to the live version. This performance is so much more raw, emotional, and visceral, and Chinchilla's performance here elevates the song to a whole new plain. I wish the live version would be available on Spotify.
Given Ren's medical history, I interpret this song to address mental illness diagnoses, and prescription psychotropics, which leave you emotionally dead (hence, the chalk outlines around your dead self). I can attest to the reality of this; for over 15 years, I was prescribed a cocktail of max doses of psychotropics, including Sertraline, until I decided to carefully wean myself off all medications in 2014. The side effects of the drugs were too many and too severe, left me an emotional zombie, and the benefits were negligible. I rather feel pain than nothing at all.

Thanks for another Ren reaction. Of course I've watched a ton of Ren reactions, and several on this song. Your the first to say that the chalk outlines references being dead inside, and that's how I think of the song. I mean, there probably isn't a right or a wrong interpretation of the phrase, but yeah, dead inside is how I think of it too. New subscriber.

Obviously the vocals do the work but that room, wow. Both the guitar and their voices just ring like beautiful bells. The studio version doesn’t hold a candle to this one, though it’s somewhat more on pitch on occasion. But you don’t want great pitch for this, you want passion and emotion. The chemistry is killer. I love how a lot of the time Chinchilla doubles him, but other times does harmonies and they’re often unexpected. She goes low when you expect high and vice versa.

Yes, live as in one take with no editing. Also yes to chalk outline usually implying a dead body, but its usage here sounded closer to having no soul.

It's probably unfortunate that my take on this was that the chalk outlines are an acknowledgement of their future. I know that I kinda see my own future as an expiration date. To see things from the perspective of a person who realizes that their number has already been calculated and called... just to feel that severity of both pain and freedom. It hurts because you know what you have to lose, but there's a clear end to the problems and suffering that brought you to that place. I know it's morbid, but that was my take on the song, just based on my past experiences.

I am baffled how you haven't given Chinchilla the same attention as you've given Nicki Minaj and Doja Cat. She is clearly leagues more talented than both of them and anything else on the radio. Give her songs a chance. Little Girl Gone. Fingers. MF Diamond, and many more. ✌
I love this song. I just wish it was a solo performance. There are points that their vocals don’t mesh well IMO
