Agreed. There’s not much that compares to the pure motoring bliss you feel behind the wheel, and in a size vehicle that is *just* right. I’ve had 5 E60s - currently have an 09 550i M Sport. Wouldn’t trade it for anything.
@@johnyp2967 not a snowball’s chance in hell. One of my previous E60s was an M5. Absolute nightmare to own. Great car for the 1/10th of the time that it actually worked. My 550i is supercharged. It’s wickedly fast. The only thing I miss is that screaming 8,000 RPM redline. That’s intoxicating.
The cost from BMW is pretty insane, but even ignoring that figure, it's still a shockingly expensive car to own. I think the reality is that BMW never made these cars to last hence why things that should really last the life of the car fail. I own an E46 and I work on it myself. Would I recommend someone who wasn't enthusiast buy one? No.

Excellent enjoyed the journey. My 2006 520d 2006 I've had for 12 years hasn't been that costly to keep on the road. 189k but it's on borrowed time (I've been saying that for 4 years) with still original DPF, auto box exhaust. But it's been great to drive. My shocks went out at 142k

Since halfway nice examples of this car here in Bavaria do still cost around 10thsd Euro I would say, you made a great value out of it by repairing it all the way through by yourself. I've really enjoyed watching your vids on the E61. I've got one identical to yours, LeMans Blue too, but a Business Edition 525d M Sport on a 59 plate. I bought it in 2016 with 144k and it's now on 182k and still drives like new. Like any car it can be a money pit, but if you're handy with the spanners and willing to have a go, you can keep the costs down. It's a lot of car for the money. It can easily achieve 40-50mpg if your sensible and is great fun and very agile for a big car if you put your foot down. Ticks all the boxes for me!
I have spent a lot of money on mine over the 10 months of having it and don’t regret any of it. After watching these videos I decided to get a new set of wheels because I had a wobble at certain speeds. I’ve done all the thermostats, AC condenser and a whole new front end (suspension). Totally worth it.
Road and Race I went for 18 inch Zito 935 in black. They fit and look really well. My 61 is the same colour as yours but an LCI. Need a black grill now.
i have 535d e61 for over 3 years now, year 2005. even though i've bought it quite cheap (5 k euro 3 years ago), i knew i'll have to invest some money and time to it because it wasn't in perfect condition. didn't know that it'll be such hell of a trip though. major headaches were active steering column repair, twin turbo manifold full restoration, rear air suspension (air bags, compressor, hoses needed attention), trunk door wires needed to be fixed. this alone cost around 1.5 eur. thermostats had to be replaced, egr valve, front windshield, some intercooler, vacuum hoses, glow plug relay (2 times) with plugs included. automatic transmission oil and filter also was kinda expensive. all in all, the car needed 2-3 k investment over time, engine oil and filters excluded. thinking about it now i have mixed feelings of pain and joy because it was expensive, time consuming and extremely painful to hear that bmw "bling" sound every time an error in idrive occurred. on the other hand, it was nice to have a executive model that pulled like a freight train. i am now thinking about selling this car and buying a cheap city car for daily driving. just don't know yet what to choose to avoid high costs of maintenance like i had before. but it's hard to choose any when you're used to that early 00's bavarian luxury
Great series. I wish they had sold that model in Canada. I've seen a few 5 series wagons, but none with the diesel. Too many suv's over here. Would love to see an update in the future, see what sort of mileage you get, how reliable it is and if you still like it. Keep up the good work.
@@Santad1917 It was fun while it lasted but I unfortunately did get rid of it because it had a cat code. Wasn't wiling to drop a few thousand on that car it also needed a number of other items that I was ok with but the Cat being replaced was the nail in the coffin. If I'm able to find another one with less miles and damage I will def. take the chance.

Pah ! I've got a manual '53 530i, which is now on 193k miles. I've owned it for, err, 9 years and put 107k miles on it. Overall, it's been great. Had the occasional large-ish bill (new brake lines - £650, although that was possibly Quick Fit pulling a quick one and it's had a new 'rack, thermostat and intake bits... oh, and a sprinkling of coils).

I have a 2004 M-Sport 525D had it 12 years 220k - 140k are mine. Big jobs Turbo actuator - re-wiring the boot loom - and not had a functional I-Drive for 3 years - rear suspension joints all replaced - today waiting on a delivery for a Turbo intercoller pipe that has split so might do the EGR clean. Been a bargin really cost me 10k don't think I have spent much more than 2k on parts. 1k per annum lifetime cost if I binned it today is much cheaper than these lease deals on a Corsa lol. I think what will kill it off it will be the electrics. Great videos on the 5er!
My drive shafts we’re clicking. Only noticed when parallel parking or manoeuvring when your changing from forwards to backwards. I done 30k in my 535d and it never got any worse so I’m glad I just left it. I found videos were if you grease the splines, the clicking stops as it’s just a bit of play.
A good explanation of the TOC (in this case calculated). But hey, at 150 per month , there isn't much out there and whatever there is will be several classes below this BMW . My previous used civic 1.8 owned for 5 years have had a depreciation of 1k a year. Sold via part exchange so I got a hit. Repairs and maintenance another 1.3k ish roughly. All in all decent cost of ownership for running a 5 year old car to 10 years old so this is the way to go.
Thinking of your comments re the DPF, I had mine cleaned on a '57 120d at 150k miles and learned that the cause was that the normal cleaning process will not take place if the car is not at normal running temp with a pretty full fuel tank so I guess if you had a thermostat problem, as I did, that might have caused your dpf problem. My car at least monitored the differential pressure across the DPF which is how it determines it has a problem.
Ouch, that's unlucky. I bought an 08 5 series just over a year ago with 143,000, now on 160,000. It's only cost me a service and a couple cosmetic upgrades.
Great vid! Other things to keep tabs on: injectors - make sure they aren’t leaking or may need a refurb at that mileage. Also keep an eye on timing chain rattle.

I own a '07 E91, sadly the previous owner wasn't so meticulous regarding the well-being of the car (he really wasn't a car guy) and many parts were worn out the time the car got to me but at least I bought it here in my country for a fair price.

I drove an 07 E60 550i 6spd manual for 12 yrs and 183k miles. All told....in maintenance and repairs, I spent $33k in those 12 years. The worst repairs being the valve stem seals ($7k) and the crossover coolant pipe ($3k).
Ive got an 06 e46 320cd that ive had 3 years, bought on 145k miles now on 175k, its came with fsh and 2 owners in the same family, Since buying ive done, 4x oil and changes, jetex airfilter, pollen filter x2, 2x fuel filters, swirl flap blanks, both thermostats and fresh coolant, poly wishbone mounts, coilovers as had a leaking shock. so not too bad, but my brake lights come on on the dash, so new pads and maybe next, and my airbag lights been on for a couple of weeks, but I cant get inpa to talk to my car anymore for some reason. Ive also changed wheels and tyres, 120 for one set of tyres and 170 for my current wheels and tyres, and fitted hid's.

I think that is pretty expensive even doing the work yourself on a 12 year old BMW with average mileage. Likely it'll get better as perhaps it won't need a lot for a while now - hopefully..! Keep it another year or two and that monthly cost will tumble I reckon and it's a good looking thing!

I thought the car could tell how blocked the dpf was from the differential back pressure reading from the exhaust? I had a e90 330d and I remember the bmw specialist saying this?
A specialist BMW tool like ISPA can read the back pressure but as far as I know it won't throw an engine code based solely on back pressure. Happy to be told wrong though.

This car is so "cheap" (reasonable priced maintenance) I couldn't be more satisfied, but on the other hand, I have my eye on a E61 530xd for some time now. I guess parts and maintenance for 530xd is a bit more demanding, right? btw, beautiful car you've got. Stylish, nothing extreme.
The BMW Dealer parts & labour prices 🤑was truly shocking 😳 Having some basic mechanical knowledge & shopping around for pattern replacement parts can save you thousands of £££
The e61 touring has a very common fault. The electric tailgate goes wrong and is very expensive to fix. I had two problems. The hydraulic fluid was leaking, so the tailgate stopped working. The second problem is the electric strut came out of the bolt because it is worn-out. I am not sure if you have covered this. I fixed both of these problems. If anyone needs help, let me know.

damn, oil change on 20k miles ... in Bulgaria we do it every 10-15k km, which is about 6-9k miles. I would not recommend 20k miles even if the oil producer and BMW says LL can last 20k miles ...
Can I ask how many miles you do annually? I run second hand car as my mileage is so high (20-25k pa), and depreciation/lease cost is huge. For me it's cost per mile rather than cost annually that's the indicator I'm calculating... A V70 D3 on '63 with 140k on the clock is costing about 29p a mile - that's small loan, insurance, tax, fuel, tyres, service and maintenance.
i have 2007/01 530xi and spend already much more money, defective xdrive motor, defective panorama roof, defect engine, defect electrict devices, defective watered diversity antenna broken wires, water pump, starter, ignition coils, cooler broken pipe, now even unrapaired, PDC sensors getting defective crankshaft sensor, blind headlight(the glasses) defect wiper behind(the mechanic is rusty) and the backdoor is not closing anymore -force needed. so in between 2010 to 2020 i spent about 10kEUR even more

I got a 2009 323i with 93000 miles and even that is a money pit bought it for 3000 canadian and when all is said and done its going to be around 5500$ doing all the work myself .. Bmw owners dont seem to like doing maintenance or repairs on their cars...
Knowing what we know now with the prospect of paying 12,000 GBP for repairs I wonder how you go with a Seller by saying "Not worth anything, but I'll take it off your hands for nothing" If at the end of 3 years you decided to rid yourself of it, by breaking it up for parts I imagine you would get back more than 4,000 GBP. For those that didn't know, OEM cost of spare parts is about 1/20th of the cost charged by Car Manufacturers.

Regarding the air suspension compressor: it is very expensive at BMW, but this site offers OEM quality air suspension parts. I know because mine comes from there and has worked flawlessly for the last seven years. www.air-suspension-shop.com/Air-Supply_6 And watching this video, consider what I already gained by maintaining and repairing mine for the past 13 years I own it... And it will go on for many years to come, because to me it is a great car.
To be honest nothing really dramatic broke on your car. Most of what you have done is maintance. Imagine if something like the turbo brakes, egr valve, intake cracks, fuel injectors goes bad, gearbox faults, timing chain rattle even more you haven't done anything on the suspension. I don't hate on Bmws, they are nice cars, but you can't deni they are money pits. And btw got 2 friends with the same cars as yours, one is a sedan, and I maintain them.
These things are famously unreliable. I personally do not believe that model is worth all that money to keep on the road. A newer model on HP would have been more financially viable. But sometimes.... Keeping it on the road and spending hours thinking about your next repair is part of the fun.
Also that's 5400 pounds....which is probably about 6300 euro (6298 actual with a quick google, what a guess), so for the price you paid in repairs and buying the car, I could have bought a 2013 Vauxhall Corsa with less than 100km, a 2015 Peugot 108 with less than 90km, a 2013 Mazda 6 with 120km, or a 2013 Hyundai i10 Deluxe with 130km.. and they're kilometers not miles. But each to their own. :)

does the thermostat issue also affect the n52? You said 2 driveshafts. Did you mean the 2 axles?

I thought the car could tell how blocked the dpf was from the differential back pressure reading from the exhaust? I had a e90 330d and I remember the bmw specialist saying this?
A specialist BMW tool like ISPA can read the back pressure but as far as I know it won't throw an engine code based solely on back pressure. Happy to be told wrong though.

Excellent video, glad I found it, even more glad you made it :) Learned a lot in terms of what to expect and how much it costs. I've been driving a 2003 E46 318d for two years now. This car is so "cheap" (reasonable priced maintenance) I couldn't be more satisfied, but on the other hand, I have my eye on a E61 530xd for some time now. I guess parts and maintenance for 530xd is a bit more demanding, right? btw, beautiful car you've got. Stylish, nothing extreme.

The e61 touring has a very common fault. The electric tailgate goes wrong and is very expensive to fix. I had two problems. The hydraulic fluid was leaking, so the tailgate stopped working. The second problem is the electric strut came out of the bolt because it is worn-out. I am not sure if you have covered this. I fixed both of these problems. If anyone needs help, let me know.

damn, oil change on 20k miles ... in Bulgaria we do it every 10-15k km, which is about 6-9k miles. I would not recommend 20k miles even if the oil producer and BMW says LL can last 20k miles ...

Can I ask how many miles you do annually? I run second hand car as my mileage is so high (20-25k pa), and depreciation/lease cost is huge.
For me it's cost per mile rather than cost annually that's the indicator I'm calculating... A V70 D3 on '63 with 140k on the clock is costing about 29p a mile - that's small loan, insurance, tax, fuel, tyres, service and maintenance.

i have 2007/01 530xi and spend already much more money, defective xdrive motor, defective panorama roof, defect engine, defect electrict devices, defective watered diversity antenna broken wires, water pump, starter, ignition coils, cooler broken pipe, now even unrapaired, PDC sensors getting defective crankshaft sensor, blind headlight(the glasses) defect wiper behind(the mechanic is rusty) and the backdoor is not closing anymore -force needed. so in between 2010 to 2020 i spent about 10kEUR even more
So if you would have bought the another BMW 5 series but for 6350, do you think you would not have to spend anything for repairs then? or was 4000 + repairs the best deal?

The F10 is more expensive to service. You'll have to get the pan and filter along with the oils. It's all one unit unlike the E60s.

I got a 2009 323i with 93000 miles and even that is a money pit bought it for 3000 canadian and when all is said and done its going to be around 5500$ doing all the work myself .. Bmw owners dont seem to like doing maintenance or repairs on their cars...

Knowing what we know now with the prospect of paying 12,000 GBP for repairs I wonder how you go with a Seller by saying "Not worth anything, but I'll take it off your hands for nothing"
If at the end of 3 years you decided to rid yourself of it, by breaking it up for parts I imagine you would get back more than 4,000 GBP.
For those that didn't know, OEM cost of spare parts is about 1/20th of the cost charged by Car Manufacturers.

Regarding the air suspension compressor: it is very expensive at BMW, but this site offers OEM quality air suspension parts. I know because mine comes from there and has worked flawlessly for the last seven years.

20000 miles between oil Change is crazy I change my oil every 6-7 Thousand miles. And it sounds like you brought a lemon.
To be honest nothing really dramatic broke on your car. Most of what you have done is maintance. Imagine if something like the turbo brakes, egr valve, intake cracks, fuel injectors goes bad, gearbox faults, timing chain rattle even more you haven't done anything on the suspension. I don't hate on Bmws, they are nice cars, but you can't deni they are money pits. And btw got 2 friends with the same cars as yours, one is a sedan, and I maintain them.
That's a lot of money.

These things are famously unreliable. I personally do not believe that model is worth all that money to keep on the road. A newer model on HP would have been more financially viable.
But sometimes.... Keeping it on the road and spending hours thinking about your next repair is part of the fun.

Also that's 5400 pounds....which is probably about 6300 euro (6298 actual with a quick google, what a guess), so for the price you paid in repairs and buying the car, I could have bought a 2013 Vauxhall Corsa with less than 100km, a 2015 Peugot 108 with less than 90km, a 2013 Mazda 6 with 120km, or a 2013 Hyundai i10 Deluxe with 130km.. and they're kilometers not miles.
But each to their own. :)
