Using a shield really opens up this weapons potential. Nice attacks.

Impressive! At last we see the gladius used to full effect and immediately it becomes clear why this was such a dangerous weapon enabling Rome to conquer the world.
If only u could correct all those movies in which the gladius is used as a long sword..

Questo è in assoluto il video più semplice e completo che illustri la terrificante efficacia del gladio usato SENZA scudo....è un arma magnifica e sottovalutata!!

Nice to see that we did almost the same Training 8 years ago in our Gladiator School in Trier and what theese guys (Romans) did almost 2000 years ago is still valid stuff today.
    Keep up your nice work.
Kind regards "Scorpio" the thracian ;)

This is excellent. Always remember to step back! This is primarily a stabbing weapon. Keep your distance!

Really great video just wanted to add a few things. Your 'mistake' @0:40 was getting into clinch range in the first place. It's not ideal but in that situation there's plenty of things you can still do to defeat an opponent. Pushing the edge into the throat will make your opponent jump backwards and move into short range where you will be able to thrust effectively. Clinching with your empty hand will keep him still long enough to perform a pulling drawcut to the neck. Just for God's sake remember to grip the back of the head, gripping his neck runs the risk of you cutting off your own fingers. The opposite is true if you decide the slash your opponent's eyes. When you do this grab the back of his neck because his head will likely tilt backwards and if you're unlucky while gripping the back of the head your weapon could slash your hand open. If you thrust sideways into the face then sometimes it's best not to grab your opponent. Holding him in place increases your chance of piercing his face, but again you run the risk of your weapon injuring your opposite hand. If you are more interested in survival than winning vertical thrusts to the legs or feet will usually surprise your opponent and leave him too injured to run after you. Reaching around behind him to cut his tendon is a very risky option because you will lose sight of your opponent and very likely get struck in the back. Unless you are an extremely skilled wrestler able to trap their weapon don't even attempt this move.

I have a nice gladius that is sharpend right up it's fun to use and me personally I make up for its small size with shear aggression just keep swinging kill shots till they can't keep up and you hit them or you can push their weapon and make a thrust it's pure savagery also punch and kick when able.

Wrong leg! The Romans had their left leg forward to brace the shield, the right leg was further back. They weren't 'fencing', they were counter-punching. Once the enemy crashes into your shield then you stab to the belly, leg, or over the top to the face. You. Never. Slash. The centurion would take his staff to you pretty hard if he saw you doing that.
Slashing/hacking might produce a cut enemy... that could still kill you. You either penetrate his body (this will soon kill him) or you stab him in the face/neck -- this will stop him or kill him, or you seriously wound the leg - this will immobilize him.

You take another step back and either slash or put the point towards the opponent by returning it to the 1st position.
Keeping your weapon between you and the opponent is key. Forcing your opponent to constantly consider the point and edge of your weapon is key.
