Wait, in Raytown, Missouri? Why did they have such thick Southern accents? I always imagined "Mamma's Family" happened in KY or TN or maybe VA...
I thought it took place in Louisiana?

It was a tv movie, then a series for 2 seasons. Then 3 years later after being cancelled they brought it back for its final form until it ended.
Carol had that script made because she was over the whole thing and wanted it to end. They made the show with Carol’s ex husband and she didn’t speak to the cast for years after because of that. They ignored the storyline from the tv movie and kept the character going without her blessing. Carol was very protective of these specific characters but they handled it very well professionally and on screen, resolving most of their conflicts well enough to continue the show without Carols involvement at all past the initial series run.
