ITV Schools 'Lightspots' Junction and My World titles - mid-70s

  • A complete junction from ITV Schools from the colour lightspots era. I believe this was the last caption used before the switch to interval slides circa 1976-77, so this recording dates from sometime in the mid-70s. Can anyone be any more specific?
The 'My World' titles are included, with the theme tune 'Puppy Dog Tails'. The recording then stops, so we never find out what the nice lady had to show us!
Thanks to Simon Luxton for the recording.

The music playing while the clock runs is "Middle Of The Day" by Ronnie Hazelhurst who used to do lots of music for BBC TV shows.

Oh, this is absolutely wonderful - so utterly nostalgic! I loved to sit and listen to these bits of music and I now at last have some of these tunes from the Watch With Teacher CD. In order of play here, they're: 1 Beadle-um-Bo, 2 Les Trois Chats (my fave), 3 Avez-Vous Le Tempo, and 4 Middle Of The Day - all by the Regency Orchestra. Sometimes, during the longer 10.30 am 'break-time' interval, a fifth tune, Eldorado, would be inserted between pieces 2 and 3.
My guess is late 1973 to late 1974.

I wish someone would give us footage of the interval that ran from 10.30 until 11.00 and music that was played.

Good stuff! I'm guessing this is around 1974-75 as I think ITV used another later version of the lightspots caption during the 1975-76 school year that had the greyscale boxes on top and underneath the lightspots and the "ITV FOR SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES" legend below the bottom set of greyscale boxes. That only lasted a year before the picture slides came in from September 1976.

At my school we would have watched this on a huge black and white TV so had no idea the lightspots were different colours or what it meant.

@simmo5 Thanks for the info - I knew there were different variants of the Lightspots caption used in the 70s, but was uncertain what was shown when. So, this is from earlier than I'd thought then!

As stated below, there was apparently a later version of this light spots slide which had sans serif type and ran for only around a year in 75/76 before picture rolls came on. Amazing to see the real junction not just a mock though.

@RobinCarmody Unfortunately, Robin - that's all there is to the recording. I think it is prior to Autumn 1976 (when I believe the My World 'jigsaw globe' titles were introduced), and it's a latish version of the lightspots - so I'd guess 1975-76 school year.

I think this could be 1975 actually because that's this piece of music, Beadle-Um-Bo by the Regency Orchestra (but written by Norman Warren) was used. I only know this having researched it last year - I was only four at the time.

If the My World clip lasted longer, and if the closing titles of the previous programme were included, I might just be able to date this - but, alas, it's pretty much undateable with what we have here.

    • @scottpeacock5492

The repeats would have given school teachers time to record school programming at home on their VHS recorders during the school holidays to be use for lesson once students return to classroom after their 1 or 2 week break.
