It took me a long time to find you as well. Not sure why because I’m scanning for vintage boat building and sailing all the time. Now that I’m here, I find your videos an absolute joy. The rustic setting, your fine craftsmanship and quiet commentary (even the chickens) meld together into an inviting soul-satisfying world which we are privileged to feel a part of while watching. Thank you both for your beautiful work. You are doing something truly great. Best wishes 🇨🇦
Oh thanks! Isn’t it odd we are so hard to find… we still can’t work it out but anyway we are glad you are here and you enjoy our little journey to build a wooden boat!
Since the launch of Tally Ho, this is now my favourite wooden boat building channel! Your taste in music accompaniment has always been superior. Whilst I don’t want to wish my life away, I do look forward to every episode!
Two other channels that you might find interesting is Sailing Yabá and Ship happens. Yabá was launched recently, but is a very good and optimistic documentary of two young people. Ship happens is still ongoing and combines British humor with some great filming.
I could almost feel the wood as she ran her hands over it to find the high points. We take it for granted but it is amazing how our hands are able to pick up even minute discrepancies. Nice to see the guard chickens defending the home base 🙂
Thank you again for taking us along on another trip. The cabin top looks beautiful now it is oiled. As does the hatch. By the way, Matt, you call your solution with the wood strips a poor man’s dowel, but it is actually a centuries old way of joining planks. Especially in cabinetry. In Dutch, the strip of wood is called a ‘veer’, and it is meant to do exactly what you are doing. It provides the same strength as a tongue and groove joint would, but leaves the ends of the planks ‘clean’.
lefke, I do love me a good sharp scraper. Also, your pro approach to finishing shows. Resisting the urge to touch what is closest to you with the first roll but instead, going to the center and working out - experience pays off
Thank you Colin, I love the scraping blades. They give such a great result. Thanks for the feedback, the oiling was such a fun thing to do and we're so happy the timber is protected.
At 70 and being a 'wood guy' all my life (also studied Finishers like Georges Frank and others) may I interject? The 1st coat - all important - is going in two directions: into the thirsty grain and evaporating out into the air. The life of the finish is extended by getting a good foothold, so flood the 1st coat and then, with a drier brush, pick up the excess. A thin 1st coat dries/gels before it gets very deep.
This took me back to working on my dad’s 42’ ketch, using “Deks”… only downside we discovered, using oil on Teak anyway, was that the oiled deck got darker due to UV and hot to the feet. In the end, we let it all go silver.
Lefke can lay down a finish like a pro. My experience has been most yards bring in a specialist when that caliber of paint/varnish finish is required.Good work.
Oh my goodness, thank you for the closeups, I was like a kid with my face up against the candy store window, such nice timber and you've done it justice.
Iefke, nice job on that hatch, but I will never forget that sink you made, yes, you are the master sander! What a cool episode opener, who would have thought a flock of chickens and a duck would be in there to greet you, that’s crazy good!!! The cabin top is absolutely gorgeous, good call going with the oil, outstanding!!
I literally just started watching your channel now amazing work mate you and your partner well done . I know things can be tuff at times but literally what a boat amazing. Good luck
As every week enjoying all your work. It’s ashame we cannot smell the Owatrol, because that’s for me an extra joy when using it. And with a D2 finish it even more beautiful. Nice work.
What a great finish on the deck, all the time and effort shows in everything you produce, thanks for taking the time to record the build, its one thing building a boat but recording and editing is a major job as well, thank you!
With Acorn to Arabella and Tally Ho both in the water I was worried about what I'd watch to get my wooden boat build fix. A Boat by the River is the perfect next project to watch.
... just recently started watching (binge watching really) and I really enjoy the way you two have put this channel together ... love the discussions on the steps and ideas between you both as you tackle the next task on this beautiful and delightfully built boat ... thank you for sharing with us and allowing us to be with you vicariously ...
Loose tongues (AKA floating tongues) have been in use for centuries prior to the arrival of biscuits (although obviously not using ply)....so not "poor man's" anything. I'm not familiar with your cabin top timber, but it was much improved aesthetically with the addition of the oil, and looks great now. Oh, and I know it's counter-intuitive, but sanding across the grain first with a belt sander gets stuff fairer quicker, and you then just follow up along the grain.
Oh yes true thankyou! We did give it a cross grain sand before filming. We probably should have mentioned sorry. But yeah the oil really made it pop and helps stabilise the timber!
Beautiful work as always, i think we call the plywood insert a spline noint here in Ireland, in my opinion stronger than a biscuit joint, more glue surface
Beautiful work as always she is looking amazing once oiled I see you have lot's more boat inspectors they should be giving you high marks for your work but bribing with food helps lol David Newcastle Australia 🦘
I’ve got the same Mikita belt sander as you. Had it for over 25 years and it’s done a lot of work. And it’s still the same model on sale now. It can really rip it off when you need it to, but in the hands of an “artist” they are an excellent tool.
Yes totally agree! Belt sanders are very understated, everyone thinks they are for big and serious removal jobs but they can also be used for delicate stuff!
That wooden cabin top really looks nice.. that wood is beautiful, I don't remember what you used but it looks almost like Birchwood... just magnificent
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River it's beautiful, I'm one of those guys who are all about the proper design, functionality and lastly the look and flow of everything..
Just found you guys, loving watching your past episodes, so easy going and entertaining. Great that you wear ear defenders, but I do worry though that you don't seem to wear safety glasses when you're using power tools (One pair of eyes and all that).
Welcome aboard! So happy to hear you are enjoying the videos and our build. We do try and wear protective gear but are always grateful for the reminder to be better at it! Thank you
@@Building_a_Boat_by_the_Riverit helps to remind me too. So easy to say I'll just do this, when you've left your glasses behind. Hey there Charley! We both trained and worked for a boat building company for four years while building Tarkine, matt is not a qualified boat builder which is handy! Before that we have years of experience and tickets sailing tall ships, mostly from the Dutch fleet. Glad you’re enjoying the channel!
11:50 "Poor mans Biscuit Joiner" - Nah. Its a clever mans waterproof reinforcing technique. Not a place I would use dowels or biscuits, as it has to keep a lot of weather out. PS - Whats your favourite brand of coffee ? I was thinking of a boat-warming gift when I drop in and annoy you one day when I am going past.
Great job there two journeys involved the first is the journey your on building the boat and the feeling of satisfaction you get the second is the journeys the boat will take on all the best from Glasgow 👏👏
Matt you said Iefke was your partner ? Wise up ! grab that woman she is one in a million, marry her ASAP ! you won’t find a better first mate then her besides she’s beautiful, hard working and loves you and the puppy 🐶!

Yes that is very true!! Trust your hands and eye, that helps a lot in boat building
Nice work guys stay warm
You two! Cheers
Looks very nice, brought out some colour. I was a little worried it was sort of too blandly white, but it looks great with the oil finish.
Yeah is too, it was very white and dull without the oil
Another fine moment, thanks for sharing 🙂
Our pleasure! 😄
Love the color of the cabin!
Great job ❤
Thanks!!

You two are doing a great job ----- from an old boat builder from the 1960's in Canada.
Aw thankyou! Glad you’re enjoying the viewing and project! Cheers
Beautyfull deck👌
Aw thanks! ☺️
That's no boat. It's a yacht!❤ Thanks for sharing how somethind so beautiful is crafted.
Hahahah cheers Damon, starting your RUclips channel soon I hope?
Splining like that with good plywood is the intelligent woodworker's solution to that problem. It's not the "poor man's" anything.
Hahaha true I guess, thanks!
a very sweet dog, a woman, a man on a river making about. for 4 years. amazing.

Oh yeah glad to hear it! You’ll be ok for a week or two now?!
This took me back to working on my dad’s 42’ ketch, using “Deks”… only downside we discovered, using oil on Teak anyway, was that the oiled deck got darker due to UV and hot to the feet. In the end, we let it all go silver.
Oooooh interesting insight, thankyou
I admire your patience to make everything as perfect as possible
Oh thankyou! It becomes rather obsessive when it’s your own project!
That Deks Olje (pronounced Olya I believe) should be put on until the timber refuses to accept any more.
Yep exactly what we did! Cheers
Lefke can lay down a finish like a pro. My experience has been most yards bring in a specialist when that caliber of paint/varnish finish is required.Good work.
Hahah ironic you say that but she was the finisher at the yard we use to work at, making all the boys mess look good is an art!

That oil really made it pop! Great contrast with the seams. 👍🏻 🇬🇧. On the 🐓s can I suggest you watch Chicken Run 🤣
Yeah it sure did! Oh yes we are due for a refresher chicken run! Haha

What design is the boat based on? Have I missed that episode? Would love to know who the designer was and why you chose the design that you have.
