Wanting to do some good this winter. Put together some blessing bags to give out to the homeless in my community. Check out the video to see what I put in them!
I'm working on making one right now geared towards a female. I'm using an old backpack I had in my house. So far I've added things I've already had in the house: a pack of baby wipes, feminine wipes, pads, tampons, Chapstick, toothbrush, peanut butter, water, and crackers. I plan on adding a few more food items snd possibly a shirt or a hat or socks, and then right before I take it to someone I plan on making both a hot and a cold meal for them. Probably a hamburger or spaghetti for a hot meal, and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a ham sandwich for a cold meal, along with fruit
Some suggestions for items to include: A gift card for McDonalds. (A $1 cup of McDonalds coffee is much more than a beverage. It also means a homeless person can sit in a warm, dry place for an hour or so while they drink the coffee. As a paying customer, they can also use the bathroom.) .... $5 in quarters and a $0.75 box of laundry detergent from a laundromat so the recipient can wash a load of laundry..... A blank, stamped envelope, a couple of sheets of writing paper and a pen ... Some words of encouragement written on a greeting card. You can buy the greeting card at a dollar store.
You may have well intentions but you have to realize that was overkill for a homeless person. Half of that stuff will be thrown out alongside the road. Its not a three day camping trip for them like you might think. Most of them only want your money or sometimes food. I say sometimes food because in the case of beef jerky, what if they dont have the teeth strength to eat it or they might not trust it. I've seen a homeless guy on the corner for about a year given lots of food and drink only to leave it all there to polute the corner. Some kind lady thought it would be nice to bring him a home made apple pie, there was one bite missing and he left the thing to rot on the corner only for the residents to pick it up
That's a really nice blessing bag. I like it. I only have a few suggestions. Since you have a cold weather concern perhaps adding a scarf of some sort or maybe a shemagh would be a good thing to go with the gloves and the knit cap. Also, I really like that first aid kit. The one in my bags is quite a bit smaller but, that's because mine doesn't have all the stuff that yours does nor is it that big. However, like you, I always like to augment my first aid kits. If yours doesn't have it adding in a few single use antibiotic ointment packets as well as a 10 pill Tylenol travel tube and a 10 pill Advil travel tube would be good as well. Lastly, the sports drink is nice but, adding in a couple of bottles of water would probably be very good as well.
I suggest you make a bag for a woman, include female hygiene items (pads, wipes and stuff). ❤️
