There's a sad reason Tony never wanted to play a father on-screen before as he has said that he didn't want to be reminded of his own father's treatment of him when he was a kid. So yeah, it was special that he finally wanted to play the role of a father in this film.

The black community got black panther which legit felt like a cultural movement in the route of pride of heritage and culture....
Now the asian community has shang chi. As an asian american , i can't begin to describe the pride and tears that came over me having a movie not white washed. The overall action sequences reminded me so much of all the movies i used to watch like jackie chan, jet li, donni yen, and the OGs from crouching tiger hidden dragon.
I abs loved hearing chinese and seeing the sub titles , especially from a Marvel film. I'm so proud that young asian kids will be able to look at a lead roll as the hero...thank you marvel.

I've been in America since the late 1970s; got here as a 12 year-old. I could count all the well scripted, well produced, and well directed movies --- with sufficiently large budgets --- starring an Asian American man or Asian American woman leading a credible cast of actors.... with the fingers of one hand. About 99.95% of all movies I've seen starring Asians in serious leading roles have been Asians from Asia, mostly from China and Japan.
So, after close to 45 years of living in America, this is a welcomed change in Hollywood. Whether Marvel makes money or not is beside the point; the point is, America is an incredibly diverse society. All portrays of heroes can't be just White males, even though White males think that's how reality should always be like "until you have real talents" from other groups, too....
The reason I said "whether this makes money or not" is that MOST movies don't make money, whether they are big or small budgeted movies. The few that make tons of money are made through well established franchised movies, using DC and Marvel characters. But if you allow for Asians and other ethnic America to make movies that flop, like White people do it ALL THE TIME, there will never be a time for ethnic Americans to do leading roles, because there's this prejudice of "They are not bankable."
Yeah, how many movie roles did Jennifer Aniston or Robert Downey Jr. got to star in THAT FLOP before they started making good returns on their lead roles? Many! All kinds of people should have those opportunities, too.... not just White men and women actors and actresses...

I feel she's too embittered at Shangqi to have that kind of jocular relationship with him. Not like Shuri and T'Challa, which was a comedic relationship in Black Panther. I wouldn't be surprised if in future iterations of the Shangqi / Xialing relationship goes deeper into a dramatic direction.
Xialing has a lot of reason to be angry at her brother. Some of it is his fault, but not all of it -- some is due to parental favoritism and asymmetric parental expectations, a bit like Thor and Loki. That sets up a *very* rich background for dramatic storytelling. Also, they are brother and sister, so that dynamic is going to play out differently than Thor and Loki.

I'd put him up there with Brando, Alain Delon, Toshiro Mifune, Chow Yun Fat, Max Von Sydow -- actors who ooze charisma and gravitas and masterfully inhabit every character they perform. I didn't know how much expectations and hope I had for this movie until I was in theaters. I saw the love and care Marvel gave to Black Panther. I saw how they allowed that cast and crew to shine but didn't have the same hope for us because "Asians are quiet and should be grateful". As a person who never saw eastern asians in leading roles, something in me rose when I saw it in a Japantown movie theater. This theater was PACKED with different asian ethnicities. Together, we experienced a top budgeted Hollywood film starring asian actors who dealt with loss, self discovery and navigating one's place in society. They dealt with all that and not once was their race or language the center for the character identity or used as character development. For the new generation coming, this is for you. For those born before, this is for that child or teenager in your memories. Stay safe everyone and remember together we can stop asian hate and Black Lives Matter.

Love that Simu referenced Infernal Affairs. That film series is so underrated. I've tried to talk so many friends into watching it and I've had no success. They can't get past the subtitles, so it's a private treasure that I enjoy every so many years.

Me too!! Being raised in Canada, I grew up watching TVB dramas but never really watched HK cinema - 無間道 was the only HK movie title I knew growing up, and Tony Leung and Andy Lau were cemented as such legends in my mind.
The second half of your comment reminds me of that Bong Joon-ho quote - "Once you overcome the 1-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films." I'm glad Marvel didn't shy away at all from the subtitles in Shang-chi - I hope this encourages more people like your friends to step out of their comfort zone and enjoy films in other languages!

So I watched it and loved it. My only complaint is that literally the movie could have had an extra 10-20 min (Ironically that was my same complaint about Black Panther) cause I wish Wenwu got a bit more time with his children at the end. I get that movies have to stick to a run time cause theatre play multiple movies a day, but would looove a longer directors cut! They even said there was a fight sequence which didn't make it into the movie!

    • @gordonliu3972
      @gordonliu3972 2 года назад +10

I agree. More fight sequences and maybe some more training sequences. It would be cool if there was more time spent world building once they entered the realm Ta Lo. Not complaining though... I simply want more, which is a sign of a great movie. I hope we get many sequels.

I’ve been watching Tony Leung since I was 7 years old. His first acting career was in Hong Kong television series that was very popular called The Duke where he played a poor pettler and scam the Manchurian Royal guards that he was from a royal family and snuck inside the Chinese Emperor palace and became very close friends with the prince. His acting skills was phenomenal! The television series was a hit on HKTVB ( Hong Kong Television Broadcast ) he was extremely funny and comical. He used to be known as the funny actor not the serious actor. This is until he started to get into Hong Kong movie industry and got into more serious drama, love and action movies. Tony Leung also tried to be a Hong Kong pop singer in the 90s but that didn’t work out because his vocals weren’t there.
Tony Leung has come a long way like Chow Yun Fat. American Hollywood movie industry is slowly opening up to Asian actors but it’s going to take a while because racism was still apparent in the 70-late 90s. Just look at Star Wars. That should tell you.
Tony Leung is on another top level of acting that not even many American actors can even top his skills. It’s only a matter of time when more Hong Kong actors/actresses get noticed. Look how long Michelle Yeoh got noticed.
