Here's the simple question no one ever answers when talking about employee engagement. How is it that despite decades of research, decades of survey science, decades of HR Tech evolution, and thousands of EE/EX experts, the EE needle hasn't changed? It's not the managers! If there's an engagement problem, there's no chance the managers are any more engaged than their people. How do you incent disengaged managers to ignore their engagement and focus on employees? It's possible there are examples of Gallup transforming engagement to the extent that business metrics were impacted, it's a very well-kept secret. If Gallup has the answers, then they should be selling their services to the CEOs and basing their fees on the income statement change. Here's what happens when you attack EE from the CEO's perspective. The survey was a single 9-word question, and a third-party reporting to the CEO collected 12,000 responses. The third-party challenged blockers, including officers by escalating debates at the CEO's staff meeting. Hundreds of "dumb" policies were altered or eliminated, SG&A was reduced by a sustainable $300 million, capital by $200 million, and inventory by $45 million. Several whole departments were eliminated, and bullies were sent home. In total, 3900 employee suggestions were accepted. The 80-year-old company's stock was $18 and has since gone over $100. At some point, someone has to generate results and that's almost impossible to find.
