And excluded games that were remasters, or had concurrent release with the previous console. I know, right? They did well making up the software losses with hardware sales though - original/Slim consoles themselves which never permanently came down in price, massively marked up PS5 Pro, Portal, PSVR2 (orphaned early like the Vita), those Pulse earbuds with rectangles on them etc. That and re-releasing old games. I think if the PS5 wasn't fully backwards compatible with the PS4 in a way that actually improves some games and it runs more quietly than an unserviced PS4 Pro, it might be more obvious to everyone exactly what Sony are doing.
I have to agree. While I like the PS5 hardware, the XSX hardware is much better except for the SSD Upgrade. In terms of peripherals, the PS5 is better with the DualSense 5 controller, and the Headset. The PS Portal is okay, but not a fan of the PS VR2 but it's there and it's decent. While we can't go back to the days of the PSOne and PS2 for software/titles, I was hoping the PS4 era was a hiccup, and we would actually get more titles and variety, at least like in the PS3 era. Unfortunately, so far the PS5 is the lowest in the history now. I am hoping for a couple things; - Sony doubles down on making games. Maybe instead of a couple huge games, more like dozens of big/medium sized games. Perhaps looks to make sequels to old franchises and not dwell on remastering newer titles. - The PS6 decides to be an over-powered console - The controller gets a huge upgrade

The switch hardware is basically a portable PS3 yet games like Mario Odyssey and ToTK exist because they’ve been playing refining their custom tools. They should focus on optimizing the engine tools and the software to create games that can be played on a portable device.
Following on from my previous comment. 1) New DS6 controller. It now has the thumbsticks at the top, with four rear finger buttons for a dynamic new gameplay. Great ergonomics for 3D environments. It has the D-Pad and Action Buttons on the bottom for legacy controls. In the middle the trackpad is gone and replaced with a small touchscreen that can be turned-off for battery life. 2) More Software focus. Motor Storm, Infamous, Soul Reaver, Wipeout, SSX, Spyro, Driver, Prototype, Sly Cooper, Days Gone, Silent Hill, and more. If they can fund and manage to have one of these games released every 6-9 months, then the system won't feel so stale. 3) Over-powered hardware. While the PS5 is pretty good, it did need 32GB of Shared-RAM, and maybe upgraded to Zen3 cores. These differences are showing some hurdles today for certain games, especially due to poor optimisation. I don't want that for the PS6. Hopefully we will see it released in Late-2027 with at least 64GB Shared-RAM, and 1TB nVme which can be User Upgraded. It'll still be 8-core processor but on the latest Zen6 architecture (instead of something old like Zen4+), and using a modern 2nm (+3nm) lithography instead of something "old" like 4nm (+5nm). And using that to stuff enough iGPU cores to match a mid-range dGPU on the latest Gaming Laptop or Windows PC. Also we would want a "Quality Seal of Approval" so that all games can be rendered in at least 1800p-native and 60fps-native, with High Quality Settings, they can only then be "upscaled" to 2160p, 120fps, RayTracing Settings, using the upscaling techniques... but it needs to start off a native rendering that is already pretty decent. Basically it would be a USD $1200 PC inside a USD $600 price tag. And Sony will eat up the costs due to the software/games sales. Just do it, Sony!
The future is miniscule improvements in real power while a higher % of your frames are artificially created. All while you pay more for your console each generation and you own no games and there are no discs.

As much as I hate the idea of buying another PS console after how few first party AAA titles we've gotten in recent years, and especially with PSVR2 support, I'd rather buy a PS6 than a PS5 Pro. Mid gen console releases just don't excite me. I was onboard with the PS4 Pro, and by the time I actually connected it and transfered all of my PS4 games, the PS5 was up for pre-order. So I used it maybe a handful of times before getting a PS5 in November 2000. I think 2027 would be a good time for them to release it. With peorders in October 2026. $499/$599 for wither/without optical drive. Yes, they will lose money, but that's par for the course. Hopefully M.2 SSD prices will continue to drop and that'll be much cheaper by then. I also think A.I. and PSSR/DSR will be a big part of the upgrade here. Should be interesting either way. 😀

3D -V Cache chips get so hot even when undervolted it would definitely be hard to implement in a console. My CPU cooler for my 5800x3d is the same size of my Series X.

Also when you look at where it benefits most, often times running 1080p with the most powerful GPU in existence to avoid GPU bottlenecks... I don't think 3D V is even necessary for many people, especially when they give up all their productivity performance for it like install speed, and shader comp. For consoles, they run into GPU bottlenecks pretty much always, as evident by the level of GPU downgrades between 60fps and 30fps modes. Like Cerny said, you can count on one hand the amount of games that can't hit 60fps due to the CPU. So most these 30fps modes are due to GPU limitation, not CPU. I don't see PS6 with a $500 CPU with 3D V to get to 120fps broadly, I see them targeting a GPU to get as close to 4k as possible before upscaling. With some of this new Nvidia tech like multi FG which bypasses CPU bottlenecks, it seems the CPU will be even less important in the future possibly as the GPU generates frames itself using AI. AMD usually follows Nvidias lead, but we will have to wait and see what they do with UDNA vs RDNA.
I think vcache would do more than 20 percent in a console, as consoles are already very bandwidth starved, i think adding the vcache could see huge potential gains.

guy on the bottom right isn't making sense to me. v-cache is stacked on top of the cpu, it doesn't take up extra die space. that's the whole point of the x3d's "vertically stacked" v-cache. AMD is already working on making X3D APU's for the next gen. as the ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips have proven, people just aren't buying chips without the v-cache becuase the performance gains are just that significant. if AMD is making APU's with v-cache then sony would be stupid not to use that for the PS6

Nice video. Not a criticism, I enjoy your insights. I tend to think prices could go higher if XAI508P rockets. But understand the logic for sandbagging estimates. My opinion is XAI508P breaks 1, perhaps reaches 10 ATH, if conditions are right. But broader forces are at play now. We’re moving into really unknown territory. And these entities are shrewd. I think there’s massive manipulation ahead. If XAI508P survives that, well, we’re likely in for a good pump.
It is sad that the new consoles and their development is becoming more a business about selling older high tech components, than focusing about game AI, and game design innovations. Take as an example the difference between games from ps3 era all the way to ps5. This is like 18years in which the games play almost identically, only the frame rates are higher, level designs stray away from linearity to more open world design-which most studios only used to waste more of our time, and add meaningless fetch quests, and increasing resolutions! Luckily we still have many indie devs who make great games but it’s sad that Sony, which was incredible during ps2 era, started focusing more on movie like experiences but nothing more. Also the game development becomes so long, that studios can’t afford to take any risks-further leaning into stramlining and less experimentation in terms of gameplay. Back then a new game in a series could release in a year or two so even with a fail, they could recover fast and try something new. Now things get so expensive, that experimentation became almost nonexistent, that’s why more and more games just streamline gameplay into what most popular, reduce difficulty into what 75%+ people can finish, force online to acquire data models so their gameplay changes are pure data based, not skill based, and cut development cycles with almost completely minimising game testing, so that the players become free testers and their complaints are sometimes heard and then used in post launch updates. Releasing unfinished games is one of the worst practices ever these last two gens! Now we see, why the overall game quality will keep stagnant unless games become less a business about generating hardware and software sales but more about making fun and creative products! Not saying everything is bad, there are good games, but not necessarily better, more creative and original games than what we had a couple gens ago.
Burger King in the UK charged me £10 for a double burger today ( I was more than shocked) yet the place was full. I don't actually think Sony would have any issues raising the price bracket for their "base" PS6 a fair whack. Just where we are at with most things in life now. Here's a strange "PS4 on PS5" related question, which maybe someone knows the answer to... hopefully!😂. I've asked this many times and no one seems to know the answer. Why would a PS4 game (Pinball Arcade), run at 60fps/1080p on the PS5, but the internal video capture records it at only 30fps? I thought this was a PS4 back compat issue, but my other PS4 games, such as the Capcom Stadium collections. Anyway, if anyone knows, please let me know.
How? The consoles are always GPU bottlenecked. How would 96+ megabytes of cache on a CPU help with a GPU bottleneck? Look at the games that can hit 120 on consoles currently, so CPU is capable in some cases, most of them at 60fps, what changes between 60fps and 120fps? All GPU functions. 3D cache would do nothing on consoles, because every time you see 3D cache even tested is at low resolution 1080p with the greatest GPU in existence to avoid a GPU bottleneck. PS6 is not going to have 3D cache running low resolution 1080p with the greatest GPU in existence where 3D cache would show gains, they are going to try to match it to peoples 4k/8k televisions, not your 1080p high refresh monitor. Sony even said only 10% of their user base even has 120hz displays.
Remember all of the features on this gen that were supposed to be "game changers"? Meanwhile, Nintendo is doing more ambitious game design with what is essentially a portable X Box 360 with extra RAM.
700 euros for fully backwards compatible sony console is a no brainer. I paid 500 euros for my XBox Series X that plays 360 and original xbox games... I'm guessing not even PS6 will be bc because Sony just doesn't care anymore...
@MichaelM28 yes you are right. But what happens if you put your god of war 2 disk on your ps5? I recently bought enslaved odissey to the west for the 360 for 2 euros and guess what? I put the disk on my series x and the game plays wonderfully. I understand ps3 emulation is tricky but it's getting better and better. If the PS6 costs 700 euros and can play my ps3 disks it would be a day one no brainer. Until then Series X all the way!
Better to just have a PC. To have full backward compatibility in max quality. On PS5 Pro Doom2016 runs in PS4 mode. Good that it runs at all, but on PC it would ran on max res/settings/fps, instead of being limited to very old HW mode.
It's a matter of price. But surely there are many people here who know exactly how cheap it is to manufacture an SoC with a 3D cache and how console manufacturers will sell each device at more than double the cost of manufacturing.
At the start of each gen Sony and MS typically follow a loss leader approach and sell the hardware at a loss, and then historically cost reduce over the next several years by leveraging Moore's law to produce cheaper revisions that can lower the sticker price. That for example is how PS2 eventually reached $99. I can't make this comment longer and go into further details or the spam filter will shadowblock it.

I'd say from a business and component cost perspective they are not, however with Moore's Law slowing down many aren't expecting 4 years progress and $200 higher pricetag to only offer as much performance uplift as it currently is. They blame Sony, when in reality it's just ASML and TSMC and other companies having to use ever more complex equipment and more man hours to produce smaller chips,ultimately this just gets passed down the supply chain to Sony and the end consumer.

It would also make it easier for developers to hit higher than 60fps frame rates and pretty much guarantee VRR on all games. If we are really being honest about this, the PS5 and Pro are both 1440p machines that can run games at 4k.

Believe me, Sony is REALLY paying attention to how all this AI upscaling crap plays out in pc gaming. I have absolutely no doubt the ps6 will feature heavily AI upscalers to reach 4K60fps minimum on all games as standard, especially because most console gamers play far enough from the TV to notice any issues. If Nvidia/AMD manages to have a hold on the input lag, oh boy... It will be DLSS/FSR galore for everyone.
AI upscaler if you want 4k 60fps is fine.., but hope future games will still support the Xbox Series X & PS5, just lower resolution or lower RT.., just not abandon them completely (they are powerful machines, it would be a huge waste, if they get dropped off.., unlike the PS4, which was really out dated by the time PS5 came out...) .... that said, the 10GB Series S RAM will become an issue (?) likely forward, if they intend to keep supporting older consoles into the next-gen..

We have learned that everyone gave up on the PS5 halfway through the generation, including the engineers who made it, but Sony still made out like bandits on all the hardware even when it was a bit disappointing and didn't have enough games. You're grossly overestimating Battlemage and thus discrete Intel. Also, it seems like you forgot about AMD's AFMF toward the end - considering you didn't even mention it - which has been enabling frame gen in pretty much all games for a long while already.
What we learned is that Sony and other gaming companies will focus on developing/using AI-driven super sampling technologies on their hardware instead of optimizing the software (games) lol. Fuck these artificially created frames! Tbh I am afraid of where the gaming industry is heading - nobody knows how to optimize anymore; the excuse from the devs is always "buy the latest GPU" and even then the performance can be unstable. @XPuntar all new 2024 and 2025 good oled tvs are 144hz and this year they are some that are going to be 165hz..do some research, i think this year's 55 or 65 lg oled is going to be at 165 for example.

PCs and console today are all x86 CISC-based pc systems with varying specs. Before the ps4, consoles were RISC-based (excluding 1st xbox). Porting used to be more difficult back in the day due to this alone.

*What we've learned* Is that the ps5 pro plays 99% of the game exactly the same as the ps5. And the "pro" games still drop to 40-50fps in the CPU intensive scenes due to it's archaic cpu. Man, the ps5 pro is an absolute piece of junk hahahaha.

They did well making up the software losses with hardware sales though - original/Slim consoles themselves which never permanently came down in price, massively marked up PS5 Pro, Portal, PSVR2 (orphaned early like the Vita), those Pulse earbuds with rectangles on them etc. That and re-releasing old games. I think if the PS5 wasn't fully backwards compatible with the PS4 in a way that actually improves some games and it runs more quietly than an unserviced PS4 Pro, it might be more obvious to everyone exactly what Sony are doing.
I have to agree.
While I like the PS5 hardware, the XSX hardware is much better except for the SSD Upgrade. In terms of peripherals, the PS5 is better with the DualSense 5 controller, and the Headset. The PS Portal is okay, but not a fan of the PS VR2 but it's there and it's decent.
While we can't go back to the days of the PSOne and PS2 for software/titles, I was hoping the PS4 era was a hiccup, and we would actually get more titles and variety, at least like in the PS3 era. Unfortunately, so far the PS5 is the lowest in the history now.
I am hoping for a couple things;
- Sony doubles down on making games. Maybe instead of a couple huge games, more like dozens of big/medium sized games. Perhaps looks to make sequels to old franchises and not dwell on remastering newer titles.
- The PS6 decides to be an over-powered console
- The controller gets a huge upgrade
@@ekinteko what I’m saying is they need more time to experiment with the ingredients. The switch hardware is basically a portable PS3 yet games like Mario Odyssey and ToTK exist because they’ve been playing refining their custom tools.
They should focus on optimizing the engine tools and the software to create games that can be played on a portable device.
Following on from my previous comment.
1) New DS6 controller.
It now has the thumbsticks at the top, with four rear finger buttons for a dynamic new gameplay. Great ergonomics for 3D environments. It has the D-Pad and Action Buttons on the bottom for legacy controls. In the middle the trackpad is gone and replaced with a small touchscreen that can be turned-off for battery life.
2) More Software focus.
Motor Storm, Infamous, Soul Reaver, Wipeout, SSX, Spyro, Driver, Prototype, Sly Cooper, Days Gone, Silent Hill, and more.
If they can fund and manage to have one of these games released every 6-9 months, then the system won't feel so stale.
3) Over-powered hardware.
While the PS5 is pretty good, it did need 32GB of Shared-RAM, and maybe upgraded to Zen3 cores. These differences are showing some hurdles today for certain games, especially due to poor optimisation. I don't want that for the PS6. Hopefully we will see it released in Late-2027 with at least 64GB Shared-RAM, and 1TB nVme which can be User Upgraded. It'll still be 8-core processor but on the latest Zen6 architecture (instead of something old like Zen4+), and using a modern 2nm (+3nm) lithography instead of something "old" like 4nm (+5nm). And using that to stuff enough iGPU cores to match a mid-range dGPU on the latest Gaming Laptop or Windows PC. Also we would want a "Quality Seal of Approval" so that all games can be rendered in at least 1800p-native and 60fps-native, with High Quality Settings, they can only then be "upscaled" to 2160p, 120fps, RayTracing Settings, using the upscaling techniques... but it needs to start off a native rendering that is already pretty decent. Basically it would be a USD $1200 PC inside a USD $600 price tag. And Sony will eat up the costs due to the software/games sales.
Just do it, Sony!

As much as I hate the idea of buying another PS console after how few first party AAA titles we've gotten in recent years, and especially with PSVR2 support, I'd rather buy a PS6 than a PS5 Pro. Mid gen console releases just don't excite me.
I was onboard with the PS4 Pro, and by the time I actually connected it and transfered all of my PS4 games, the PS5 was up for pre-order. So I used it maybe a handful of times before getting a PS5 in November 2000.
I think 2027 would be a good time for them to release it. With peorders in October 2026. $499/$599 for wither/without optical drive. Yes, they will lose money, but that's par for the course. Hopefully M.2 SSD prices will continue to drop and that'll be much cheaper by then. I also think A.I. and PSSR/DSR will be a big part of the upgrade here. Should be interesting either way. 😀

As a PC gamer, the PS5 was my last non-nintendo console, never again will be tricked.

3D -V Cache chips get so hot even when undervolted it would definitely be hard to implement in a console. My CPU cooler for my 5800x3d is the same size of my Series X.
I would fully expect them to have some form of boosted cache on the ps6 chip if they are charging these high prices.

3D V cache has a lot of hyperbole around it. When you consider it is somewhere between 96-128 MEGABYTES, and the public thinks you can just fit everything in it. Also when you look at where it benefits most, often times running 1080p with the most powerful GPU in existence to avoid GPU bottlenecks... I don't think 3D V is even necessary for many people, especially when they give up all their productivity performance for it like install speed, and shader comp. For consoles, they run into GPU bottlenecks pretty much always, as evident by the level of GPU downgrades between 60fps and 30fps modes. Like Cerny said, you can count on one hand the amount of games that can't hit 60fps due to the CPU. So most these 30fps modes are due to GPU limitation, not CPU. I don't see PS6 with a $500 CPU with 3D V to get to 120fps broadly, I see them targeting a GPU to get as close to 4k as possible before upscaling. With some of this new Nvidia tech like multi FG which bypasses CPU bottlenecks, it seems the CPU will be even less important in the future possibly as the GPU generates frames itself using AI. AMD usually follows Nvidias lead, but we will have to wait and see what they do with UDNA vs RDNA.

guy on the bottom right isn't making sense to me. v-cache is stacked on top of the cpu, it doesn't take up extra die space. that's the whole point of the x3d's "vertically stacked" v-cache. AMD is already working on making X3D APU's for the next gen. as the ryzen 7000 and 9000 chips have proven, people just aren't buying chips without the v-cache becuase the performance gains are just that significant. if AMD is making APU's with v-cache then sony would be stupid not to use that for the PS6

Nice video. Not a criticism, I enjoy your insights. I tend to think prices could go higher if XAI508P rockets. But understand the logic for sandbagging estimates. My opinion is XAI508P breaks 1, perhaps reaches 10 ATH, if conditions are right. But broader forces are at play now. We’re moving into really unknown territory. And these entities are shrewd. I think there’s massive manipulation ahead. If XAI508P survives that, well, we’re likely in for a good pump.
It is sad that the new consoles and their development is becoming more a business about selling older high tech components, than focusing about game AI, and game design innovations. Take as an example the difference between games from ps3 era all the way to ps5. This is like 18years in which the games play almost identically, only the frame rates are higher, level designs stray away from linearity to more open world design-which most studios only used to waste more of our time, and add meaningless fetch quests, and increasing resolutions! Luckily we still have many indie devs who make great games but it’s sad that Sony, which was incredible during ps2 era, started focusing more on movie like experiences but nothing more. Also the game development becomes so long, that studios can’t afford to take any risks-further leaning into stramlining and less experimentation in terms of gameplay. Back then a new game in a series could release in a year or two so even with a fail, they could recover fast and try something new. Now things get so expensive, that experimentation became almost nonexistent, that’s why more and more games just streamline gameplay into what most popular, reduce difficulty into what 75%+ people can finish, force online to acquire data models so their gameplay changes are pure data based, not skill based, and cut development cycles with almost completely minimising game testing, so that the players become free testers and their complaints are sometimes heard and then used in post launch updates. Releasing unfinished games is one of the worst practices ever these last two gens! Now we see, why the overall game quality will keep stagnant unless games become less a business about generating hardware and software sales but more about making fun and creative products! Not saying everything is bad, there are good games, but not necessarily better, more creative and original games than what we had a couple gens ago.
Burger King in the UK charged me £10 for a double burger today ( I was more than shocked) yet the place was full. I don't actually think Sony would have any issues raising the price bracket for their "base" PS6 a fair whack. Just where we are at with most things in life now. If it meant the loss of many children gamers (who poor parents have to buy their toys) then we will just see an even greater increase in Nintendo products/gamers and sadly mobile gaming. Just imo.
Here's a strange "PS4 on PS5" related question, which maybe someone knows the answer to... hopefully!😂. I've asked this many times and no one seems to know the answer. Why would a PS4 game (Pinball Arcade), run at 60fps/1080p on the PS5, but the internal video capture records it at only 30fps? I thought this was a PS4 back compat issue, but my other PS4 games, such as the Capcom Stadium collections. Anyway, if anyone knows, please let me know.

How? The consoles are always GPU bottlenecked. How would 96+ megabytes of cache on a CPU help with a GPU bottleneck? Look at the games that can hit 120 on consoles currently, so CPU is capable in some cases, most of them at 60fps, what changes between 60fps and 120fps? All GPU functions. 3D cache would do nothing on consoles, because every time you see 3D cache even tested is at low resolution 1080p with the greatest GPU in existence to avoid a GPU bottleneck. PS6 is not going to have 3D cache running low resolution 1080p with the greatest GPU in existence where 3D cache would show gains, they are going to try to match it to peoples 4k/8k televisions, not your 1080p high refresh monitor. Sony even said only 10% of their user base even has 120hz displays.

Series X can only play roughly 500/2000 360 and 50/1000 original xbox games. PS5 has just as many playable PS2 games as the latter.
@MichaelM28 yes you are right. But what happens if you put your god of war 2 disk on your ps5? I recently bought enslaved odissey to the west for the 360 for 2 euros and guess what? I put the disk on my series x and the game plays wonderfully. I understand ps3 emulation is tricky but it's getting better and better. If the PS6 costs 700 euros and can play my ps3 disks it would be a day one no brainer. Until then Series X all the way!

On PS5 Pro Doom2016 runs in PS4 mode. Good that it runs at all, but on PC it would ran on max res/settings/fps, instead of being limited to very old HW mode.

It's a matter of price. But surely there are many people here who know exactly how cheap it is to manufacture an SoC with a 3D cache and how console manufacturers will sell each device at more than double the cost of manufacturing.
At the start of each gen Sony and MS typically follow a loss leader approach and sell the hardware at a loss, and then historically cost reduce over the next several years by leveraging Moore's law to produce cheaper revisions that can lower the sticker price. That for example is how PS2 eventually reached $99. I can't make this comment longer and go into further details or the spam filter will shadowblock it.

I'd say from a business and component cost perspective they are not, however with Moore's Law slowing down many aren't expecting 4 years progress and $200 higher pricetag to only offer as much performance uplift as it currently is. They blame Sony, when in reality it's just ASML and TSMC and other companies having to use ever more complex equipment and more man hours to produce smaller chips,ultimately this just gets passed down the supply chain to Sony and the end consumer.

There aren't obscure modes. It's the same modes pc has when utilizing upscaling tech. Quality, Balanced, or Performance. Games like Stellar Blade, Remnant 2, Black Myth Wukong, and LOU 2 already have Balanced modes on the base PS5.

Let them do what they think is best with their games for the target hardware, don't tie them down to console hardware rules that may limit games. It's ultimately up to the developer, and whatever he says is a "key target" with the keyword "target" which in no way implies a future of one way to rule them all.
@@Mcnooblet Honestly man, what I really want on console are 1440p options. I would much rather have better textures, lighting, ray tracing, etc., at 1440p over higher resolutions. It would also make it easier for developers to hit higher than 60fps frame rates and pretty much guarantee VRR on all games.
If we are really being honest about this, the PS5 and Pro are both 1440p machines that can run games at 4k.

Believe me, Sony is REALLY paying attention to how all this AI upscaling crap plays out in pc gaming.
I have absolutely no doubt the ps6 will feature heavily AI upscalers to reach 4K60fps minimum on all games as standard, especially because most console gamers play far enough from the TV to notice any issues.
If Nvidia/AMD manages to have a hold on the input lag, oh boy... It will be DLSS/FSR galore for everyone.
Question is, will this 4K be blurry and full of artifacts. Even on PS5 Pro I don't get sharp 4K 60fps in new games.

We have learned that everyone gave up on the PS5 halfway through the generation, including the engineers who made it, but Sony still made out like bandits on all the hardware even when it was a bit disappointing and didn't have enough games. Basically Sony's contribution to the whole ninth gen, I'd say.

PCs and console today are all x86 CISC-based pc systems with varying specs. Before the ps4, consoles were RISC-based (excluding 1st xbox). Porting used to be more difficult back in the day due to this alone.

Is that the ps5 pro plays 99% of the game exactly the same as the ps5.
And the "pro" games still drop to 40-50fps in the CPU intensive scenes due to it's archaic cpu.
