Keeping the Flame Alight With the Last of the Lampists

- Jim Woodward is a lampist. A what, you ask? A lampist's main job is to keep the enormous, delicate glass lenses of lighthouse lights in tip-top shape so that ships at sea stay safe. But over the years, glass lenses have fallen out of vogue. Now, most of the notable lighthouse lenses in the United States are beset with plastic LED lights. But Woodward, one of the country's last lampists, soldiers on. We joined him at Point Reyes National Seashore, where one of the great glass lenses is still in place, lighting the way for sailors at sea.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

I'm about to cry... I hate seeing disappointment in old people's faces.
nvm I just cried
Poor Fieri
I live just up the highway from that very lighthouse! every night driving home from work it's a sign that I'm getting closer to home. its always been a comforting beacon. happy to see its story told
I was stationed at Point Reyes earlier in my career. I have 3 lighthouses that i maintain optics on, including a first order Fresnel lens. They are works of art.
I am happy to see this. It made me nostalgic. I lived not so far from a beach with a lighthouse growing up but I never really got to see it up close. Makes me sad this profession is dying out. If I'm ever stuck at sea with no modern gadgets and no lighthouse to point me home... be a shame. I think I will alert my friends that if I ever die lost at sea to say, "See? There should be more lampist. She would have found her way if a lampist was around!"
Old technology and everything associated with it dying is pretty sad tbh, just look at lighthouse for example or an old wind mill etc. There's something timeless about these things.
Ooh! Lampists.. they are a very interesting job! I love lighthouses, they just sort of have that nautical and vintage feel. I love these videos, I learn something new once a video is out!
Aethyr Stonite ikr ugh i am obsessed with Great Big Story
Aethyr Stonite same
they really should have shot at night
me too! it's really interesting
I know Jim Woodward and have been fortunate to see him work up close, on the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. He is a true gentleman, artist, and scholar.
I like how they just let him talk without having someone interrupt him with questions as they do in other videos.
An actually interesting and first look into an old piece of history, also any idea of the song used in the first part of the video? Kinda sounds kinda like a Gymnopedie but I'm not exactly sure...
I was thinking the same, I would really love it if they would upload/tell us what song was used!
xWinglessAngel24x It sounds like Satie, maybe it's an arrangement of one of his gymnopedies?
Yeag, it kinda sounded like Gymnopedie No. 1 but with violins. Gymnopedie No. 1 is my second favorite piece of classical music, and my first is Beethoven's 7th. They are both such beautifully sad and underrated pieces.
Aaron Park Darude Sandstorm
I'd say more likely with cello, not violin.
So happy, seeing him living his best passion 😭😍😍
The fire fades, and the lords go without thrones...
Even with the roughest waters the must fragile lens stand on solid ground. Unmoved by the waves tackling the land around this pillar of hope.
What is the name of the song at the beginning, it is so peaceful.
Great mini doco and the lighthouse has captured the imagination off many story's, and hopefully will continue to do so!!
So happy to wake up and watch your videos every day. They inspire me and make me happy. 😊
I love these videos. Thank you so much.

It's very sad when you witness all the beautiful traditional jobs got replaced by technology.
IVE BEEN HERE! this place is a huge tourist attraction

Knew it was point reyes from the thumbnail. My favorite place on earth. I recommend that anyone who has the ability to go, to go ASAP.
So beautiful
Hey, Great Big Story--can we have the names of the songs you use in your videos??
How do u find these people you have so many great stories
I actually really enjoy lighthouses!
I get excited when seeing them if I'm ever near one. :)
I personally think they're beautiful and unique.
When I was little I had dreams of going inside of one, having my own desk, a bed, and some coffee just doing my own stuff. ^-^
Hopefully it comes true one day. :D
Even if it is sad, we have to accept that the world cannot go unchanged. It's mostly good.
This channel takes me to Fantasy worlds!
Anyone know the song at the beginning?
beautiful architecture must be preserved.. it is negligible to disregard a piece of manmade history and the profession bound to it.. :)
I like it so much ❤
there are only one or two original lighthouses in Michigan I think that are still operating. or maybe just one. it's a dying art to keep these old beacons going in this age of constantly updating technology..but I think it is important to keep things preserved and not forget the past. it breaks my heart when pieces of history are lost. we also have a few renovated lighthouses that are used as nautical museums. very interesting.
Does anyone know the name of the song that was playing from 0:00 to 0:32 ? Thanks

“ you sir are a lampist. ”
song title anyone ? D:
Lamp Potty Training: That lamp-pist itself!
Bwahaahahahahahah 😂
Where is this lighthouse?
it's the age of LED!
Lighthouses have always been romantic to me, and I mean that in the classical sense.
Wish someone would 3D capture each lighthouse for prosperity.
so did he replace that broken lense or not?
I can think of only 2 companies in the world with that would be able to do it. And it is so very expensive.
That's kind of sad
Is that what they call lighthouse keepers on the West Coast?
"THERE'S SOMETHING IN THE FOG"!!!!.....-adrienne barbeau 1980-
Maybe if your ears weren't so big, that's technology wouldn't fade away
There was a true story about this groups of 3 Lighthouse keepers on an island in the UK. They were known to be tough. But one day, according to the log, there was a insane storm which made on of the keepers cry. They were scared, according to the log. When a supply ship came to the island, they found no one to be there. The weird thing was that there were no reported storms in the area, with calm waves. creepy right?
EDIT: Apparent last entry in the log was: ‘Storm ended, sea calm. God is over all'
this sounds interesting do you maybe have a link or something to the story?

See that shady door down the stairwell with the makeshift 'Enter At Own Risk' sign on it? That's his fantasy room. So don't be lured by curiosity to enter this dungeon because you just might be his next victim.

call me a douche but sometimes, this 'inspirational' sort of stories, seem vague and just beautified by great editing work and most of the times they end up with statements like 'to me this is the most _____ thing in the world' and i feel ya but.. nah not really :/
