My ex-husband was a male Karen, but he was too cowardly to complain to the service person. Instead, he complained to ME. Through every meal, car service, purchase, whatever, he did nothing but complain about everything. To ME. And I was supposed to fix it. Make it right. I did. I left him.

My mother once slapped me across the face for speaking up when she tried to cut in line at Disney world. We’ve (my brother and I) also had to apologize to service staff about my mother’s behavior. It got worse when she married my stepdad. His money made her feel like she “won” and was obviously correct because look how much money she has.
I’ve been no contact with her since she tried to kill me after I went into remission from cancer. Yeah apparently she wanted me to die.

I was getting a haircut once and another lady walked in for her appointment. My 4 year old heard her tell the hairdresser her name was Karen, she (my daughter) loudly whispered to her sister "I don't like Karen's". Karen laughed and said she didn't either. I was so embarrassed but she was so good natured about it, I felt bad when she discussed legitimately wanting to change it because of the meme and bad connotation with her hairdresser. She seemed very sweet.

Retired cosmetologist. My experience is that a huge number of woman over 40 will cut their hair short, not touching the shoulders or shorter. The overwhelming reason is simply that they've spent decades with long hair, mostly to make other people and society happy. Now that they're getting older, aren't trying to be attractive for young men, are becoming more interested in their own happiness and comfort, they get a haircut that's easy to care for. Now I have to wonder because of this short haircut Karen, phenomenon, if woman are growing their hair longer again so as not to be assumed a Karen 🤔

    • @spambot_gpt7
      @spambot_gpt7 10 месяцев назад +33

The haircut is just the visual expression of not putting others first.
It's funny that they have become too lazy to maintain their hair, but have no problem making a cosmetologist work for them.

Lives off welfare in a $1.4M house but complains she's broke. Also, the house I once lived in as a child is now hoarded to hell.
When I told her we were having our first child, instead of congratulating me, she said "are you sure it's yours?". That ended my relationship with her and showed me just how horrid of a person she is. And she's the only living parent I have left.

I work in mcdonalds and had a regular Karen come through all the time (although she hasn't come through since the incident). She would always shout down the mic the second she got to it (despite being told numerous time not to) and would always order a coffee that was "cold" despite it just coming out of the machine.
So one day she comes through my lane, shouts down the mic. I take her order and payment and start taking another order, she clicks her fingers at me and tries to get my attention so I signal to her "1 minute" and finish taking the order that I'm on. She then goes to me "I want a hot chocolate" no manners or anything. "So I tell her next time you need to order at the mic", she replies going "well I forgot" so I shake my head and wait for her to pay and as I'm taking the payment, she goes "you don't like me do you?" To which I told her "no" and she replies like a child (bare in mind this is a middle aged woman) "Well I don't like your face" and then called me a twat as she drove down. She then told the manager what happened and the manager basically just said "well why did you ask her if you didn't want the answer"

My father is that ilk of person who is rude and condescending to service industry folks. He seems to gain some kind of personal satisfaction in ripping other people off and more generally ruining people's days.
I refused to go out to restaurants with him as a young adult because I wanted no part of this BS. Once I put my foot down so did other people in my family. The only person who would go out in public with him was his wife.
he complained that we were inviting him to stuff and went everyone replied back that he wasn't invited because of his behaviour in restaurants he grudgingly behaved himself for a few years. He couldn't stop himself though and he has been banned again.

Employees not being able to stand up to these overgrown children, is a serious pet peeve of mine.
Companies need to start valuing their employees who do everything for the company, more than the customers who wouldn't be missed if they stopped going there.
It's true that if employees were able to stand up for themselves, this behavior will stop.
I've always stood up for myself, not caring if I lost my job over it, and when my husband and I started our own company, we made it clear that one of our policies is that we will not tolerate abuse, and neither will anyone who works for us. We stand behind our employees, not abusive, entitled customers, so they face no repercussions for giving it right back.
For the first couple of years, we had the occasional problem customer, but we live in a small town so word spread quickly that not only will we humiliate you (well I will because I know how to make someone feel really stupid), we will permanently ban you so no one even tries that bs with us anymore because they know we aren't playing.

As far as I cared, I got good food and more time with my grandparents, and if time was really an issue I wouldn't have gone to a _fancy restaurant._

I know someone who was a proud Karin.
The concept isn't to hard to grasp - they see other people just taking abuse, having to listen to said others griping long after the event is over, and generally getting frustrated that others are not standing up for themselves. Thus, the Karin activities, are simply them being more self-assertive then other people around them. Often believing they are doing it on behalf of others who can't do it for themselves, at the very least giving you an example to live up to.
    Problem is:
Confirmation Bias leads to Over-Reactive 'triggers' within these individuals.

Three to four years of trying to fruitlessly find her former face resulted in a divorce. Fortunately he kept the receipts, and managed to get his fair share. Saw a Karen last night as of the time of writing this. We were at a trampoline place and this old lady walks up to us with 2 babies, maybe 1 or 2 years old. The fact that they were awake at 8:00 at night surprised me. I take a break from jumping around for a few seconds and I hear “you need to leave!”
I look up and this old lady with her babies is staring at me.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“These kids can’t play here because there’s too many big kids!”
I just stared. I guess she caught on that we weren’t going to budge so she picked up her 2 kids and left. A little while later we sat down to eat there (we hardly ate dinner) and then as soon as we sat down Karen comes back in with her kids. Apparently she took her kids outside and waited for us to stop playing so her kids could have the place to themselves. The thing is, we live in Canada, so she went outside and forced her 2 babies to freeze outside because she didn’t like us. I looked over and saw her complaining to staff about something. As soon as we got up, she picked up her kids, packed up her stuff, made one last complaint to the staff, and straight up left. Right on, Karen.

Perhaps if we gave more social support to some of these people they wouldn’t be in such emotional breakdown modes.

You don't make anything unless you're in the top ~5℅ of the company, if you're not you're either breaking even or losing money. Unless you get in early there's little to no stability or upward mobility. On top of that, being a "sales rep" for Scentsy is a remote job you can do literally anywhere. There's really no reason she CAN'T move, it just sounds like it would inconvenience her so she doesn't want to do it.

Friends with a Karen who seems to have picked up those behaviors from her mom. They actively complain about everything to avoid paying for stuff or to get refunds. Scammy behavior is akin to Karen behavior for sure. They try to get out of tipping fairly (if they even tip at all). And they'll lie if they think it'll get them free stuff. It's so embarrassing. I try to avoid going out with them in public if I can. The way they talk to service workers is deplorable.

I'm grateful that certain things came to light before we got married, and I/we avoided a lot of misery. I wouldn't say that we broke up because of "Karen" behaviour, like entitlement or racism (lack of empathy was an issue, though). But still, it's funny that technically, I can say I narrowly avoided marrying a Karen.

My mother was/is a Karen since the 1970's, opinionated and ready to throw a tantrum if anything does not go her way...
She eventually was diagnosed with dementia and I had to trick her into Long Term Care after my father had a stroke.
She was finally put on meds to control for mood swings and is now tolerable...
I know she is not responsible now due to dementia, but she was mean to us kids all our lives.
She was still angry about an arguement with her in-laws from 1975, long after everyone else had died. A literal sore winner.
But I still limit visits because of her mental abuse in my teens and 20's using my depression against me....

In the end, we all need to
    1. Remember our worth
    2. Be kind to each other
    3. Stop putting up with Karen.
We are caring for others when we prevent Karen from succeeding. Just be discerning so you don't make a mistake, then be assertive in favor of those taking abuse without being an a**hole yourself. It takes time to develop this but it is possible and worth it. Don't be afraid to be embarrassed while training yourself. Go make the world better.

And since my now retired mom was a waitress/bartender her whole working life, she has drilled into me since childhood how NOT to act at a bar or restaurant. Its pretty insane to end up as a Karen, while having experienced the other side.. I cant wrap my head around it, like at all! You know what its like, but still go out of your way to be difficult? My dad's ex wife's family was so embarassing. We celebrated something and went to dinner with her parents and I was floored. Her mother is obese and it just made it all the more insufferable. We were a big party and they had already set the table up at a "fine dining" restaurant called the Parkway Grill. We were seated then she asked to be moved. After that she pulls out an effing bag of silverware and tries to make us all use it bc she thinks the ones there might not be clean bc they are used by other people. Then she proceeds to modify everything and be super demanding. She sent food back. I never went anywhere with her mother ever again. The mother had zero knowledge of etiquette and I was so embarrassed. I was a server at the time so it was extra cringe.

my mother is also a karen. i'd like to think she wasn't one before she got introduced to the virus that are social networks some 10 years ago, but no, she definitely always was one.
she's always been spoiled. she had 3 maids rising me and my siblings up. one for taking care of clothes, one of cleaning interior the house and cooking, and one for cleaning the exterior parts of the house and tending to the garden. she basically didn't have to do anything. i grew up thinking that was normal. it's not normal, and you can tell what she is like being in that position probably all her life. she still think she's nobility or something, and that she inherently deserves respect from everyone. but thankfully she's at least not a rude loudmouth and openly disrespectful as normal karens, she's just... picky af, arrogant and annoying with some things. things like complaining to the cashier about things in a super market that have nothing to do with them, same with waiters and such, and she thinks everyone has to do things her way, and "respect her opinion" even when she's clearly in the wrong.
She is also a professional scam victim. you know the type of people that have a knack to believe just every stupid thing that's on the internet? that's my mother. every stupid conspiracy theory, she believes. i think the only reason she's not a full on flat earther me and my siblings called it long ago, that she would be one one day with how gullible she is. but everything else, yeah. anti vax, lizard people... everything that gets to her, gets her.

My grandmother is a classic karen. Thinks she is the center of the world, complains about everything, always has it worse then you, etc. The worst thing about her, are her mindgames though. Like, she will complain about every single family member in one way or the other; mainly that we are all lazy, sloppy, rude or ungrateful in some way. Catch is, she will never say those things to the face of the person she's currently complaining about, she only tells those things to other family members when her current scapegoat isn't within earshot. She also loves, and I mean loves, to remind us of "how much she always did for all of us" at every chance she gets, but especially when any of us are not doing what she wants us to do, or aren't doing it fast enough, or not to her standards. Basically implying that we all owe her obedience, because she cooked dinner once. And if we don't immediately jump at her command, we are ungrateful brats. She is a master at making everyone feel bad about themselves.
