...It Worked! the radio came back to life after I de-rusted the battery contact at the bottom of the battery tube. This radio started giving me problems about 10 years ago, then it just went silent. It was playing intermittently . I spent hours over the years trying to figure out why it died. It sat on a shelf disassembled for so long I'd forgotten all about it until your video. the I remembered the radio was very rusty. It came roaring back after using WD40 and scrubbing the contact. Thanks for your video.
Its a great feeling to bring back a radio that's been cold , dead and silent for years playing again.

Really pleased I've given you the push you needed to sort it Barry. It's a great feeling breathing life back into them isn't it?
      Thanks for watching!

Nice work on that leaking battery repair. I like how you made your own spring. 👍👏🏻❤️📻

You're amazing! i have a 1960 Westinghouse 7 Transistor radio, all crusty too. I'm going to de- crustify those springs and see if it comes back to life. You always leave us wanting more!!

It really is a nice wee radio. Almost small enough for a shirt pocket!

Neat repair, nice one. It's always worth neutralising any remaining potassium hydroxide with vinegar then clean water and ipa, too. Stops any further corrosion. Well, until the next set of Duraleaks, of course. Thanks for the demo of how to get into this radio. We have one, and a repair at some point is inevitable.

Thanks for the tips! I did clean down with IPA just before I epoxied the repair in. Super easy to get in this model, three screws and a spudge... I did spot you on Sunday, but I don't think our paths crossed. Maybe next time...

A gruesome mess created by that battery, and very nice fix. I like these little short wave radios and picked up one of these R9962’s recently, in mint condition with original box, info., and carry case - and will be making sure I never leave batteries in it! Or any other radio. 🤣

I'm not a fan of the most modern stuff usually, but these Roberts pocket radios rarely go wrong, and I'm garnering quite a collection of them now... I never leave batteries in, that's just asking for the Duraleak gods to wreak havoc...

Me too! (as they say). Must say Paul I always enjoy your informative videos - and am looking forward to the return appearance of that unique R200. The "me to" bit though is I also started collecting older Roberts radios needing tlc and as we already had one in the family. Running out of room I then started collecting these nifty little radios which I do intend to use as I travel a lot in more normal times. In particular I think the R9968 is a design gem (I believe it was also marketed by Grundig as in common with a lot of these were, I think, made by Sangean?). Have now discovered Hackers though so this plan of keeping to small radios seems to have gone awry! Main thing is I also think your videos are gems too!

      @@gerardcarson2779 Thank You!
Roberts / Sangean / Grundig models can 'cross-over'. The factories made them and badged them to the brand identities.
The R200 will make an appearance again. This old dog is trying to learn a new trick! - making a replacement handle sounds easy, but the reality is, our sewing machine doesn't like me much yet. We'll get there. I have the crocodile skin leather, the actual bare handle without crocodile trim - it's just a case of making the perfect and period sympathetic piece. If it's not right, 100% right, I'm not happy!

@@Codeeze Ooh, will look forward to seeing this next instalment on the R200! I recently made a new handle for my one and only foray with a modern Roberts (an RD60) that appeared in their usual shockingly moulting state, and hand-stitched the handle. As me+sewing machine=does not compute! Instead I drilled regularly spaced fine holes in a plastic template so that I could get even spacing for the stitching and then used that to guide me in piercing small holes through the leathercloth. It worked too, as I agree if it’s not 100% it’s not right. Funny to think back in the day no doubt "the girls" who made these straps will have been knocking them out in only a few seconds! Will wait keenly and patiently for the next episode - sounds like it is going to be a super job when done. And thank you! Gerry

Duraswell strikes again. Might have worked the last time they used it, but maybe sat awhile before they sold it.

I like that it didn't work, but I'd rather have honesty from the outset. I would still have bought it!

A far cry from "working", but a nice repair and save!

    • @Codeeze

Saving them is what it's all about. I'd have still bought it if they had said it was duff! Honesty, they don't seem to make it like they used to!

    I didn't watch you... oh ok i did :-D
Nicely recovered, lucky the pcb tracks didn't go nasty.
Duraleak lol , i expected a battery that cost more than the average battery should not have any incontinence, poor quality rubbish :-(.
I was thinking about a source of battery springs.
Dead battery clocks and those cheap torches that always play up.
Maybe sacrifice one of those plastic AA battery packs for the springs.
Very hard to find the curly whirley springs now.
    Hmm chocolate springs yum :)

    • @Codeeze
      @Codeeze  2 года назад

A few nanoseconds after I saw the damage, I'd already worked a plan out for bypassing the track and pad just in case. An easy fix I know, don't get many so straight forward. It was lucky not to have to change caps and voltage regs.
Battery springs, I know I have a drawer full, but I just couldn't find them!
