Our balls were just itching to be set on fire this battle. Such sweet release was had 25:36. Flaming balls were literally the best feature added to Rome 2
+THFE Productions We used to play the original 'legacy' series back when...and it's great to see you and your fellow "time bandits" leap into the depths of history and take on... The ghosts of two thousand years. and emerge back out again with a very high quality product. Cheers
I've seen a couple of total war videos (around 200-300) and I think this was the most realistic. The numbers were close to a real ancient siege, the tactics were realistic (maybe a bit too organized) and the city intself was gorgeous and detaild. It was really immersive and the flow of the battle felt real (altough a lot faster than reality).
Great battle as always. However, I find that in these sieges you seem to always put your self as defender with a severe disadvantage. To the point where even with much better tactics you seem to always lose. In my opinion, you should add to defender an extra army of militia type units, just to balance it out slightly, or something of the sorts. These battles are great but I kinda wanna see you actually win a defending siege for once :p
+Jeff Murphy if sides are balanced the defender should pretty much always win. Its both historically and gamewise true. In history no one would actually attack a fort/city unless they massively outnumbered them, i think it was a 5:1 ratio was the standard for an assault but i may be remembering that wrong.
+Jeff Murphy Oakley and the defenders massively outplayed the attackers at basically every turn in this battle, if they were on par with numbers (even fodder units) it would be a total slaughter, especially with the advantage of the defenses.
+Gregg Historically there wouldn't be such an amount of siege equipment though. Even at a 5:1 ratio, if the attacking forces would spread to such a degree to make good use of such a huge amount of artillery and siege towers (which are constructed at the spot) they would be extremely vulnerable to sorties by the defenders. I think a 3:1 through 5:1 ratio is fine, but with less siege equipment, so defending players are actually able to hold the walls. In every single siege defence Oakley and comrades are forced to defend the streets because of the artillery.
Its 1 o'clock in the morning in Germany and i cant sleep ffs and open youtube and i see a fucking new massive battle from my fav youtuber :) story of my life perfect timing bro
Man, if that third player had brought instead only slingers archers and swordsmen. If he had not done anything until late game. You guys would have definetly won.
I feel like the odds are always stacked way too far in the enemy's favour during these battles. An easily predictable game isn't entertaining, be it too easy or impossible. I could be alone here, but I feel it may be more interesting if you give yourself slightly less of an upwards climb given that you seem to almost always lose.
hey invicta, ive been watching some of your older videos today and was asking myself if you have played massive battles like this with divide et impera mod or are intending to? id really love to see that, as it is so much more beautiful and realistic! (which does not mean that the massive battle videos you have arent fun to watch)
Nice game , holding a city whith parthia and armenia can be tough , but i think your main mistake were bringing to many cataphrats. You had the hammer , but you didnt had an anvill to use ur cav as well as it had to do. Plus the lack of infantary meant you couldnt hold those key chokepoints long anuff for your skirmishers and towers to do their job.
So I'm fairly new to this game, I just picked it up about a week ago, and have only played through an hour or so of the main campaign and a couple custom battles. I was wondering how he got this map. Is it part of the vanilla game, where you can find it on the map or did he download this because this totally amazing!! Nice vid!!!
defenders in siege battles would and should benefit I think from a boost to their ammunition. I think a 15-20% bump would be sufficient. 50% would seem mad.
I love Warhammer and all, but CHRIST I miss proper sieges like this. I know rome 2 gets a lot of hate but I cant fault its city battles. Probably best of all the total wars if you factor in improvements to pathfinding and size.
OMG you didn't say "Oakley here". Now how do we know whether it is really you or not? Also I think you meant 'plateau' not 'patio' lol. Another great video!
Darren Skinner I just looked it up and it looks like you're correct. I thought it was just that word I hear Americans sometimes use for like a veranda or something.
So... Because I saw this video, I decided to try the multiplayer. I only played SP in Total War games so far. Well....the community is the worst ever?!!! Because we lost, (and I played horrible) my teammates kicked me out, telling me I was a noob and I should never play the game again. :/ Then I decided to host a game, the same map as in the video, looked fun :) I played the same faction as Oakly, because I really liked the look of the cav :) so I played 2 cav (for the rest very basic melee and some archers) units, and immediately I got trashed by my team, laughed at, called me noob, while clearly you can do well with some cav in siege battles..... My teammates left in the middle of the battle, calling me stupid, while I clearly was doing well so far.... The enemy team agree and even 1 proposed to 'ban' me? I don't know what that means? The community is the worst, and I don't want to play MP ever again....:(
+storm trooper Well, in the first match, I asked them via pm if they needed help, they didn't respond, so I 1 v 1 another player (3 v 3). I lost that battle. (remember, my FIRST mp match) Second match I was on the defense 3v3, moving my archers around the walls. As soon they breached the first set of wall, my teammates quit (they sallied out and got destroyed by art), calling me the noob, and the opponents agreeing with them. What can I do about the fact they played very different than I did? I would never let my troops attack in a siege defense?.???? Also, very little information was given about where do I need to place troops ect. I asked them multiple time, with no respons.
+Marty DeWhit You also have to put them at the top edge of slopes. I once fought a guy (new player) who decided to waste 3 rows of flaming balls by placing them on a level street. I think he thought they were bombs or something.
+Normacly Heh, first time I used them I got confused and put them on a hill... going UPWARDS. Set them off and they rolled through all my line, killed my general & opened the centre to a Gaul charge :|
Here's a cool battle idea: A 2V2, ultra funds. Every player has to bring 2 elephants, but no horse archers, slingers, or archers, and a max of 4 javelin foot units, and 2 javelin cavalry.
+Eli Bursztyn seems cool a lot of micro involved as your screwed if your javelins are on fire at will. Anyway don't take notice he's just being a troll
Hey, i really like these type of battels, but i noticed you really do lose a lot of sieges (or am i wrong?). I feel like you impose to mutch restriction on yourself in order to balance to adavantge of the defender, you also try to make it as cinematic as possible by setting up different lines of defence. I feel like if you just would have concentrated more on the citadel you could have won.
Our balls were just itching to be set on fire this battle. Such sweet release was had 25:36. Flaming balls were literally the best feature added to Rome 2
+milkandcookiesTW you really went balls out with that strat
Balls deep with the detail
Great balls of fire!! That was a ballsy move!
This city layout reminds me of the glorious days of medieval 2 with multi-tiered castles
+Fizzy Purple yup
Only medieval is incomparably better and more epic than warscape.
I never played any total war games but your videos made me a fan.
i suggest you play medieval II total war, the best in the entire series imo :)
julianaquarium I will thanks.
+westside90kd Family keep an eye out on steam sales, they happen quite often for the total war series
+THFE Productions I will.
Ikr I don't have the game but watching ur videos makes me feel like it connects me more to history. Plus the game is just so cool to watch.
had no idea you could get ontop of those buildings
+Protester19 its only certain buildings which have that ability and even sometimes they are glitched so no one can get up... kinda hit or miss
+Evil Flutters he usually does commentary after the battle but he does both.
+THFE Productions

+Gregg 10:1 says Jun Tzu.
But you may be right with your ratio :)
+Gregg Historically there wouldn't be such an amount of siege equipment though. +Glenn de Moor I agree, in Rome 2 and Atilla defending the walls is waaay too underpowered because of artillery, it's quite silly.
I visibly fist pumped when I saw a massive siege! Thanks so much for the awesome video, and keep up the good work!!!!
This is why i'm subbed to this channel..for the massive battles. Keep it up Oakley
I just started watching your channel and absolutely love the content. I became a TW fan a few weeks ago and have loved the game and your channel.
+Spencer Abril It's like watching a movie with really epic fight scenes.
Why didn't I find these sooner?!?! I'm already loving this playlist!!!
OMG i love these massive siege battles especially on rome 2 because your always bound to c flaming balls in action, keep it up Oakley!
Its 1 o'clock in the morning in Germany and i cant sleep ffs and open youtube and i see a fucking new massive battle from my fav youtuber :) story of my life perfect timing bro
+Baws Hafft Man, been in Germany for 5 months now. Same thing. Time passes at an accelerated rate here.
+Atlashon What City and where are you from ?
+Baws Hafft its 4.38 AM here.
One hell of a fight. Def seem to play, fun to watch as well!
Well done Oakley & Indypride team!
This battle would make a great movie
Moar!
This kind of content is the biggest reason i love rome:totalwar
I liked the way you said ladies and gentlemen, it was so nonchalant :D
most amazing battle ever just awesome plz could u do more sieges:D
Both Scuba Steve and Athens shit the bed pretty hard. The Flaming balls of justice, oh wow¡¡
These are the types of siege battles i wish i could play but then again im a horrible military strategist in Rome 2
Man, if that third player had brought instead only slingers archers and swordsmen. If he had not done anything until late game. You guys would have definetly won.
god i love these vids, keep up the good work!
Man, this game is so beautiful.
This city's layout put's total war warhammer's settlements to shame
Damn, I love the way you play.
Why can't the Warhammer cities be as big as in Rome 2?
3k then the 100k mark keep it going oakley!
a flaming arrow hit a flaming ball but the balll didnt get set on fire and the arrow went out what is this devilry
Arrow probably realized how unrealistic it was and decided to destroy itself
Nice Vid.. i hope you keep making more
The city is 1 of the most beautiful and hardest to capture as the attacker in Rome 2
3v4 or more is about right. An army would be stupid assault a city if the odds where not in their favor.
25:45 the power of the flaming balls
Scuba Steve and WAR MACHINE are mvps
what graphic card are u using? great video. thank you.

would you consider picking up the blade balance mode for Rome II? it makes a lot of units more viable and i think you would enjoy it quite a lot :)
He does use it
Nice game , holding a city whith parthia and armenia can be tough , but i think your main mistake were bringing to many cataphrats. Hey THFE what do you use for video editing and screen capturing? Could use a suggestion here.
nice! but which armies were you using again?
This battle was over before it began. Attackers had waaaaaay too many men.
the artillery piece on top of the seige tower was not a scorpion it was a polybolos
ur pc must be like 2 gtx titans attached to each other. 64 gb ram. a processor made of alien organs...
Will you do another Sub commanders video ?
In all of these sieges I wonder about the stats of the towers. Damn the hundreds of kills they would get.
+Morgizzler Gamer about 1750 kills go to the towers and the flaming balls just have to compare kills and losses
+DarkMatter guess some friendly fire is in that also
You should do a Sub Commander battle of this scale.
are you going to play halo wars 2? if so that will be incredible when it comes out .
when is the rome unit thing dlc coming out? im REEEAAALYYYYY pumped for it!
The flaming balls are ridiculously op
This is how I imagine Bashere handled the Battle of Maradon before help came.
Sure they captured Cyrene, but how long will it take for them to clear the bodies?
Oakley, do you play blade balance much? You should show some BB battles on the channel.
+Roderic McKay I have not had a chance to play much of it to be honest
+THFE Productions when u gonna finish that roman documentry? that was awesome 1 out of 8 done
I can't wait until I get a new computer so I can play the new total war games. I mostly play medieval 2
Babylon is an insanely good and difficult map to siege
Bro how did you hide the Sides like movie is Top and bot and make it black (Sorry for my english)
Hey Oakley do you ever play with subs?
I was so close to being on this video but the unit scale was small and the battle did go really quick but I was still pretty stoked to be versing you
+Bailey Strahan oh yeah that was the day before when I hosted it on small scale by accident. We re did it on large since that is waaayyyyy better
very awesome details
Scuba... Steve...? From Elite Dangerous? Lavigny's Legion?
defenders in siege battles would and should benefit I think from a boost to their ammunition. I think a 15-20% bump would be sufficient. 50% would seem mad.
I love Warhammer and all, but CHRIST I miss proper sieges like this. I know rome 2 gets a lot of hate but I cant fault its city battles. Probably best of all the total wars if you factor in improvements to pathfinding and size.
is this using the acient empires mod for attile?
Please do the battle of Zarmisegetuza next
How do you make the cities massive like this
Way to go Scuba Steve. We coulda won but NOOOOo! You lost the battle.
+Dethmeister Well the enemy had WAR MACHINE.. it evens out
I don't like how the units of this game just don't fit with the scenery and ground and how the blood disappears so quickly.
Pyrrhic losses.... lol I keep thinking about RWBY when hearing that term. Anyway, nice battle man.
Oakley do you have an plans to play in tournaments?
+TAEHSAEN not really
what game is this i dont recognise it?
You give up land so easily. You should make them word harder at the walls
Do you play with mods?
OMG you didn't say "Oakley here". Now how do we know whether it is really you or not?
Also I think you meant 'plateau' not 'patio' lol.
Another great video!
no a plautau is like a biome a patio is sort of what they fought in parts of the city
Darren Skinner I just looked it up and it looks like you're correct. I thought it was just that word I hear Americans sometimes use for like a veranda or something.
Vanders ya in Canada we say that 2 but I thought I didn't see any plateaus there so I assumed he really ment the court yards and stuff
Wait does he always lose? I’ve seen like 5 of these and not one win.
bought Attila refunded straight away!
+Pierce Oconnor Im just keeping it for mods like Medieval Kingdoms 1212 A.D. and and Rise of Mordor they should be a ton of fun
why?
+bryceizpro shame about the map customization with mordor tho
Is this map part of dlc?
what game is this??
Flaming Balls, sounds like a bad infection. XD
lol
Great balls of fire! You're right!
So...... 2 more months and 7 more days until Total War Warhammer massive battles then?
ever think about doing live battles?
+survivalguy24 it can be unenjoyable due to lag
This video deserves a like just for those flaming balls, Jesus.
when ever i see blobs of units i wish that you had balista ;-;
Scuba Steve! Damn you!
How long do the documentary videos take to make?
+Roderic McKay long time : )
+THFE Productions Your documentaries are amazing. They must take a ton of dedicated work and research. Nice job.
more massive battles
you should do napoleon with pixelated apollo, hes a youtuber :)
So... Because I saw this video, I decided to try the multiplayer. I only played SP in Total War games so far.

+Shaun Baxter Why do you think that?

+storm trooper no, I thought I was doing well, my archers shooting in the side of troops. There were only 2 enemy art, barely hitting their targets.
+storm trooper I have all total wars except Attila (waiting for cheap)
ive never seen flaming balls during a seige battle, if there any particular requirement for them?
+Marty DeWhit You just need to hit the Equipment tab as a defender and choose to bring some in the pre-battle/army selection screen
Beautiful city
Those flaming balls, holy smokes.
Why no bgm?
What kind of God computer do you have 😂
I love how you talk normally and then just drop in profanities every once in a while. Keeps me guessing lol.
nice vid
Here's a cool battle idea: A 2V2, ultra funds. Every player has to bring 2 elephants, but no horse archers, slingers, or archers, and a max of 4 javelin foot units, and 2 javelin cavalry.
meh
+Joshua Mullins Why? It seems pretty epic to me
+Eli Bursztyn seems cool a lot of micro involved as your screwed if your javelins are on fire at will.
Anyway don't take notice he's just being a troll
+karen lindsay You're a troll.
karen lindsay meh
Are you using mods for this?
+1234kalmar nope, this was vanilla Rome II
+1234kalmar nope, this was vanilla Rome II
THFE Productions It looks gorgeous! I have yet to figure out how to get these huge cities for costum battles.
just gold, oakley, just gold
your lancers are in way too loose a formation. They're wasting most of their charge.
in that first part
Ha! This is what you call a city!
Last time I was this early Faze Apex was tall
