@@Benlovescheese i for one am extremely disappointed. alligator was pretty fucking good, the rest of the album...what the hell happened? i don't mind artists changing up their sound (one of my all time favorite bands is animal collective, and EVERY one of their albums has a different sound!) but this is just heartbreaking. it's so poppy, bland, and just...not really anything remarkable
Am I the only one who LOVES this album? I've been a fan of the band for the past 8 years and this is precisely what I've been waiting for! Róróró is a brilliant track, probably my favourite of all time, and this new pop-rock direction brought us more amazing tracks like "Wild Roses", "Wars", "Soothsayer"... And Ragnar is an amazing singer! I'm glad he's getting this credit. Where are the fans of this album in this comment section? I think it's their best-produced album so far.
I love it too! Each one of their albums is better than the last. And this one has me reeling. Listened to it over and over, without ever hitting the skip button.
Beneath the Skin is one of my top 10 favorite albums. Everything about it resonates with me damn near perfectly. So I went in to this album NOT expecting it to be better, but at least on par with their first album. And... I gotta say I agree with basically everything you said. When I went through My Head is an Animal, each song I'd find myself listening to several times over before moving to the next track. Beneath the Skin? I'd be lost inside of a song for a day or two before moving to the next, only to get lost in it as well. This album? I kept checking the time to see when the song was over, to see if the next one could really catch me. And nothing did. I felt like I was waiting for their sound to pop in and grip me, but I was stuck forever waiting. It's a shame to see this happen. Maybe if they make more music they'll pick up their old habits again
I'm really sad the album as a whole didn't sound like Alligator, but I've been listening to it all day today and have been enjoying it. I still think Beneath the Skin is their best.
What? I thought nobody would agree with me that Beneath the Skin is the best. The amount of depth to the lyrics and instrumental is incredibly strong imo. I still loved the first album a lot though and it comes very close. This 3rd album just isn't nearly as good. To me, Stuck in Gravity and Under a Dome are just bland, even what I'd call "bad" songs... I have no desire to listen to them. There are some excellent songs on it but they could have done way better.
I’m honestly a bit disappointed. I LOVED their previous records, and while i like the change, their little unique sound is lost here. My favorites include Alligator, Wild Roses, Stuck in Gravity, Soothsayer, and Wars. No bad tracks, just forgettable ones. Agree with the score. One thing, I think Nanna actually got a bit too much run time. Ragnar only solos two songs and I do wish they exchanged more and is put faintly as background on the other tracks.
i was so disappointed by this album. i only recently got to listen to beneath the skin and it's such a beautiful and intricate album with so many messages, and my head is an animal is just incredible. but it felt like this album didn't have any of the stories or the messages in the lyrics or the music, everything sounded bare or generic and i agree, i loved when they alternate vocals and they didn't do that this time. i really hoped that omam would be one of those bands that sticks to their roots and this was too much of a change
Glad we're agreeing on the album. Nothing wrong with a pop album but at least make it interesting. It seems like they had no direction with this record and everything truly feels scattered to me. The two singles were so misleading for me because I enjoyed both wholeheartedly. Nothing else sticks to me however. (Maybe Wars)
I understand their need for change but in my opinion the folkish style is what made OMAM stand out. This album feels way too generic for me, a total step down from their previous works.
@Benjamin Davis I have no doubt about that! I just didn't feel as connected to this album as to the previous ones. I still love them and will continue to listen to them. This is only my personal opinion as of right now, but I'm very happy if you are enjoying the new album!
@@vintariss I feel the same, almost. Their last albums I had all their songs, and I loved every each one. This one one, I can't feel or say the same. I love that band, but now I only like 4 songs and one of them isn't the original version, but acoustic.
I thought the album is alright for me, i think Alligator and Wild Roses are probably the best on the album and Wars is an alright song, but i think there two previous albums are the best
I wish I loved it, I really do, but I'm honestly kinda disappointed. It's not bad, but they can do so much better. Alligator and Waiting for the Snow are some of their best songs tho. Let's hope we won't have to wait for so long for the next album and that it'll actually be amazing.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and not everyone likes the same things. I just want to say I absolutely love this album. To me it is a masterpiece, and I've been listening to it non-stop.
Me too! Loved their first two albums but this may be my favourite. Wars is probably my favourite track, I’m surprised he didn’t like that song specifically.
Beneath the Skin is one of my favorite albums of all time. I love their first one too. This album isn’t that great though. I agree with pretty much everything you said.
I like this album. Seems like most people were disappointed though. I think when artists switch up their sound, most people are disappointed (at least at first) because it's not what they expected. I went into this with no expectations, and I love this album for what it is, and I think it does what it means to do very well. They tried to create a chill, atmospheric, synthy album, and when measured with those standards it sounds great and achieves that well. It is not a typical OMAM album, and thus sounds terrible when measured by those standards. But I just don't see this album in that category. I LOVE listening to this album to just think. The empty space on this album isn't boring but is beautiful and wonderfully puts you in the headspace they meant to put you in without doing much. I don't listen to the old OMAM albums for the same reason at all, but they sound good for other moods. You don't have to love this album. Personally, I don't like beneath the skin as much as most people, which seems like an unpopular opinion. But if I can say ONE thing to you, I'd say this: let go of expectations, and give it a shot. When I first heard beneath the skin, I really hated it, but then I gave it a shot and it grew on me, and now I love it (just not as much as the other two). I hope this album can grow on you in the same way
To me it feels like music played in the background while shopping at aeropostale or zakks. Like you will like it but forget it once you leave the store.
Wow. 5 minutes in and I realized you actually weren’t talking about ‘Of Mice And Men.’ I first scratched my head over the folky description, then seeing playback of a female lead made me come to my senses lmao..long day, that’s enough internet for tonight
Here’s what I’m saying. If you only really like them for their storytelling style and more folk type sound. But if this album was dropped by a new band they’d have a following immediately for this sound.
I enjoyed it, it just wasn’t super memorable and constantly seemed to be missing something. Kinda felt like Great Value Don’t Feed the Pop Monster to me.
Alligator was simply incredible. Top 3 for me easily. So much energy and has an aura of just waking up after a long slumber. Wild Roses was stunningly beautiful. You can imagine how these two got me excited but I didn’t really get that payoff. I enjoyed elements of Rororo, Soothsayer and Stuck in Gracity, but the rest I really could not get into.
Fell in love with this band because of their folk indie sound. This album tends to do a 180 and not in the right direction. I still very much enjoy their vocals but most of the tracks sound the same. Very disappointing.
I have to minorly disagree. I am surprised honestly because I actually was not big on Alligator as a lead single and feared the worst - but I actually enjoyed the album. I certainly didn't enjoy it as much as I did Beneath the Skin that just spoke to me. Nanna did not sing as much as she did previously. I still enjoyed it, and I guess since after Alligator my expectations were low, I was presently surprised depth was still there. Super happy to see you do a review so soon though!
I completely agree with you here. Alligator was and still is the weakest on the album for me, but I really do enjoy the album. Idk if I could put it above any of the past albums but I think it's definitely up there
I agree that Alligator is one of my least favourite tracks on the album. My favourite is easily Wars. I liked the album quite a lot actually. Has a good flow start to finish.
I actually really love their first 2 records, but even Alligator for this album didn't even grab me that much, I haven't listened to the full record yet but it's a shame this didn't turn out the same way as the first 2
Disappointing. Lost all their edge and uniqueness. Taking 4 years off and coming back with a generic pop record is *not* how you get your fans excited again.
Benjamin Davis And where do they receive all the money and attention for their projects that they “write for themselves?” The fans. Musicians partly write and produces music for themselves via their lyricism and songwriting however they also have to realise who their audience is and what they want and balance the two. When bands or artists become self-indulgent in their desires, that’s when fans will ultimately feel like they don’t even know who they are anymore, they become disconnected. When you start losing your fans or disconnecting with them is when your career in the music industry dies. You don’t sell out, that’s the main rule. Whilst Of Monsters and Men haven’t completely sold out, they do need to be careful about where their direction is going. This current direction with Fever Dream has been heavily criticised, you’ll always have the fans who feel like they need to love absolutely everything, however from both critics and fans, the criticism has been scathing. This probably isn’t a direction they should pursue in the future, it’s not really them, it’s not their sound, it’s not the reason people fell in love with their music in the first place. They need to find a balance. People love their indie-folk/rock sound, Beneath the Skin was a very natural progression of that sound. I felt as though taking that even further was what they should’ve done. Gone even rockier, heck Alligator, the lead single from this current album, I feel, had that balance of sounding still like Of Monsters and Men whilst trying something different. It had their rockier elements turned up a notch, the drums, the guitars were raging. They should’ve pursued the rock side of things more rather than the Pop side on FEVER DREAM. Pop isn’t a natural progression, there is still something of who they were in some of the tracks here but this record is very much a shadow of why people love them. It really doesn’t feel like them. It’s a mess conceptually, song placements are all over the place, people on Reddit are already reorganising the damn Album because its pacing was just eyebrow raising and frankly, weird. Half of the songs are outright terrible, three of the songs are good, the remnants, decent. Decent is something I never have associated with them before. That means something special is missing. They should learn from this, not force being something they’re not, appreciate the criticism from their fans and from critics and take it on board. This has been their first misstep career wise. Money doesn’t grow on trees, everyone must always keep in mind that society controls creativity. People become famous and rich from the people who raise them up on that pedestal and appreciate their talents and their art. Without the people, they’d be like anyone else on the planet, they wouldn’t be where they are without people devoting themselves, giving away their hard earned money, taking the time out of their lives to let their expression of creativity in and wanting more. Fans are your career, without them, an artist is nothing.
Benjamin Davis not exactly. That holds true until you get signed to a major label and get a #1 hit. From that point forward, you become the pawn of your label, especially if you hit a sophomore slump.
I mostly agree with your opinion. I personally like the album quite a lot but i just think that there's no song that really stands out. I like the album but i cant pick a favorite for that reason. Great review as always Jon :)
I was really excited for this album after hearing Alligator. I thought they would have a more alternative edge to their sound but other than that, we got a few decent songs and a bunch of forgettable ones. I’d probably give this a 3/5 because it was listenable at least, but other than Alligator, Wild Roses and Waiting For The Snow, I can’t see myself coming back to it.
Nana’s voice has always been the reason that I loved this band but mostly due to the juxtaposition with Ragnar but I don’t think that this album is terrible because they underutilized her just definitely could have been better
I love all of their albums, but this one just doesn't sit well with me. I don't know if its because the music changed at breakneck speed or if its because their music feels like its too main stream, but I can appreciate their lyrics and some songs like Wild Roses. Hopefully they go back to their old style.
Idk why everyone is so let down by this album, alligator was honestly so disappointing and when I heard the rest of their songs from the new album I was so HAPPY, they definitely didn’t disappoint. Like any band, they evolve- with time.
I pretty much agree with the review. I don't mind the computer sound whatsoever, but I think the songs aren't that interesting compared to the previous 2 albums. The first sibgle is a nice one.
OMG! Yes yes I agree. When I tried to voice my disappointment in the comments of the video (no I wasn't being offensive nor impolite) people weren't so kind. Said that every band has their haters, and it's people like me who is holding the band back and etc. I just left the video and went back to hear their old albums.
I know I'm 9 months late but I heavily disagree. The production on this album is the best I've heard since Trench by twenty one pilots. This also was the first of monsters and Men album I've heard. I really love the synth feel to it and I don't think the lyrics are bad tbh. The vocal production is really interesting to me especially at the end of under a dome. I'd give this album a strong 4/5 and I'm definitely inclined to check out their other albums because of this one.
Unfortunately, I agree with you here mate. OMAM used to be really strong musically and with their lyrics, but I didn't find any of that in this album. I thought with Alligator that they were about to release another classic album of their own but that was not the case.
I believe that their record label pressured them to sound so MTV and less to themselves. This is one of the reasons why bands like Radiohead walked away from the music business to do their own thing after OK computer. OMAM should do the same for their next record because this one sounded so sell out... sorry but tats the way I feel it coming from a band that blew my mind when they released their debut album.
Just noticed you didn't review Pretty vicious album. It came out 2 weeks ago. I remember you liked "Move" so you probably want to check the album and publish a review. Great album btw
Damn they're still making music? I thought they quit years ago haha. Not a huge fan of this group, but the album was sort of a let down tbh. Good review! Any thoughts on the new blink single "Darkside" would like to hear your thoughts!
Beneath the skin is one of my favorite albums and like people under me said this one isn’t bad but it’s just not as Memorable for me as the previous two and I’m just a little upset
I think it is their best album? Their first 2 albums had great standouts, but often lots of songs also started to sound the same as each other, however here we're treated to more differentiation and personal topics. Lyrics are on par as well. Only complaint is that song of the drum beats are too generic/vocal effects sound outdated in a bad way. Best the songs and other sounds to their core are excellent. I would like to see them delve further into the Alligator sound as well though.
The main problem I see, which overshadows everything else that could or may have been just fine, is that their Musicianship is definitely missing as which was so prevalent in the previous two albums. Instead, they've digitized way too much. Aside from Alligator and perhaps one other track, the rest is just... Meh!
i pretty much agree with everything he says, to me it doesnt sound like OMAM, it sounds like another generic pop band, what happened to their folky campfire vibe they had going on with their first two albums? it was pretty much absent the whole time
God I hate that I have to agree with your review...they have so much more to offer..I like all but Alligator..but listen to their older music..don't underate Raggis vocal abilities..
Yeah it was...fine. Like I don't hate any of the songs-they're all decent enough as background music or something but I can't help but feel disappointed. It's just their last two albums were some of my favourite albums ever-so this being just okay kinda sucks. I get not wanting to be in a rut, and I'm all for them doing something new; but this was a miss for me
Considering how great their first two albums are, this is definitely a letdown. It’s just that beyond Alligator, Vulture Vulture, Waiting for the Snow, and Soothsayer, there isn’t much of anything to like.
I’d recommend the album ‘My Head is an Animal’ if you’re interesting in listening to more of their songs. Lionheart and Mountain Song are my favorites on the album!
Agreed 100% very disappointed by the album. Hopefully the next one they can bounce back to the sound, also what happened to the other two members? Still got love for OMAM!
Eh, it was aight. I’d give it a 3/5, it’s just not as good as their other records. Wars is a banger though, loved that and the two lead singles. Under A Dome is probably their worst song to date.
What's wrong with Under A Dome? I liked it, though the curse word threw me off. Was the new music style too much or was it the curse word? (Just asking because I'm curious.)
Shame. Alligator had such promise. I really didnt like it. Too many slow songs....no depth....I love this band aswell but wish I didnt buy it on vinyl now. Should have been more like alligator. Too generic. They can start songs on acoustic then layer more over....shame
super disappointed, but also not surprised. barely anything here is memorable, it sounds like generic pop that could be made by literally anyone, not OMAM.
The 4 year wait for new OMAM music is over! But oh boy, unfortunately we've got some problems to talk about...
So poppy and generic of an album for such a killer lead single.
It was a great single. And now I don't know what to think of this album

Omg great t-shirt. What about making top 10 songs of JD or The Cure?
I love all of their albums, but this one just doesn't sit well with me. I don't know if its because the music changed at breakneck speed or if its because their music feels like its too main stream, but I can appreciate their lyrics and some songs like Wild Roses. Hopefully they go back to their old style.
Idk why everyone is so let down by this album, alligator was honestly so disappointing and when I heard the rest of their songs from the new album I was so HAPPY, they definitely didn’t disappoint. Like any band, they evolve- with time.
Evolution that hinders isn't a good thing.
Their sound is absolutely held back in this
I really like waiting for the sun, soothsayer, wild roses and alligator
The only way to heal my broken heart now is to listen to the previous two albums and forget that Omam have produced anything else
Same as Coldplay anything after Viva La Vida
@@Noanator truuuuuueee
I pretty much agree with the review. I don't mind the computer sound whatsoever, but I think the songs aren't that interesting compared to the previous 2 albums. The first sibgle is a nice one.
Hey Jon, curious what you think of NF his new album!
Fan Girl yessss pls
I ADORE their first album, so I'm kind of scared to listen to this new album xD
I think you hit it right on. And to keep it simple its always about the songs and they just dont have it on this album.
Totally agree on your thoughts, sadly. I hope they'll progress and evolve in the future!
PLEASE REVIEW THE NEW NF'S ALBUM: THE SEARCH! !!! IT'S BEEN A LO OF HYPE ARROUND IT AND INTERNET WOULD LIKE TO KNOW YOUR OPINION
Will you review "The Archer" by Taylor Swift?
I believe that their record label pressured them to sound so MTV and less to themselves. This is one of the reasons why bands like Radiohead walked away from the music business to do their own thing after OK computer. OMAM should do the same for their next record because this one sounded so sell out... sorry but tats the way I feel it coming from a band that blew my mind when they released their debut album.
Just noticed you didn't review Pretty vicious album. It came out 2 weeks ago. I remember you liked "Move" so you probably want to check the album and publish a review. Great album btw
Hey John, since you did 10 favorite bands ever, can you do 10 favorite rappers ever? Thanks!
Damn they're still making music? I thought they quit years ago haha. Not a huge fan of this group, but the album was sort of a let down tbh. Good review! Any thoughts on the new blink single "Darkside" would like to hear your thoughts!
Thoughts on that will come when the album drops, I've already maxed out the amount of songs I listen to before an album comes out!
I love omam but I like my head is an animal and beneath the skin better.
But I still love fever dream.
Great video man!🤘
i love this album
Could you do a review of The Art of Drowning by AFI? That one doesnt get nearly enough love
You should review NF’s new album The Search!
Alligator is kind of grunge like
Alligator is a great song
The main problem I see, which overshadows everything else that could or may have been just fine, is that their Musicianship is definitely missing as which was so prevalent in the previous two albums. Instead, they've digitized way too much. Aside from Alligator and perhaps one other track, the rest is just... Meh!
You are wrong about Wars, John. Wars is one of the best songs of 2019.
i pretty much agree with everything he says, to me it doesnt sound like OMAM, it sounds like another generic pop band, what happened to their folky campfire vibe they had going on with their first two albums? it was pretty much absent the whole time
God I hate that I have to agree with your review...they have so much more to offer..I like all but Alligator..but listen to their older music..don't underate Raggis vocal abilities..
I was scared I was the only one who didn't like this. Since I love them, you know?
Yeah it was...fine. Like I don't hate any of the songs-they're all decent enough as background music or something but I can't help but feel disappointed.
It's just their last two albums were some of my favourite albums ever-so this being just okay kinda sucks.
I get not wanting to be in a rut, and I'm all for them doing something new; but this was a miss for me
For once I agree invariably.
Considering how great their first two albums are, this is definitely a letdown. It’s just that beyond Alligator, Vulture Vulture, Waiting for the Snow, and Soothsayer, there isn’t much of anything to like.
Little Talks is the only song of theirs that I know /:
How about Mountain Sound? Also if you like the band, you should check out more of their songs! (That is, if you'd like!)
Voyager from 311 album review
Jake Martinez I feel like this album was a huge step back in the right direction
Will you ever review x ambassadors last album
I have no interest in that
Such a shame I was looking forward to the album, but yet again I have to give it a listen to see it I like it😅
NF’s new album ?
But I still love it !
Change is good expect it Get over it.
First thing I saw the thumbnail: they’re still around? Lol
The thumbnail is misleading
So is almost every thumbnail on RUclips :)
Rororo is my favotite track
Eh, it was aight. I’d give it a 3/5, it’s just not as good as their other records. Wars is a banger though, loved that and the two lead singles.
Under A Dome is probably their worst song to date.
What's wrong with Under A Dome? I liked it, though the curse word threw me off. Was the new music style too much or was it the curse word? (Just asking because I'm curious.)
Petalleaf I don’t mind the cursing, I just found it to be pretty repetitive and I just felt it didn’t go anywhere
No song resonated with me with this one unfortunately. Big fan of the first 2 albums.
Production: Great!
Vocals: Amazing 👍
Lyricism: 🤢
Review both acts of Singular by Sabrina Carpenter pleeeeaaaassseeeeee
Yo, you should review the new Slipknot song 😉
Killer lead single Alligator then this Fever Dream album just a disappointment.
Shame. Alligator had such promise. I really didnt like it. Too many slow songs....no depth....I love this band aswell but wish I didnt buy it on vinyl now. Should have been more like alligator. Too generic. They can start songs on acoustic then layer more over....shame
re-listening to the album & re-watching this review, this album is quite disappointing follow up to beneath the skin
Honestly the band would be significantly better if Nana was the only one on vocals. Still love them though.
super disappointed, but also not surprised. barely anything here is memorable, it sounds like generic pop that could be made by literally anyone, not OMAM.
This album is very very very disspointed :(
This album FLOPPED
