I started watching your channel when you did a 7.3l rebuild as Greasemonkey101 and don't recall how many years ago that was. I now have 450K miles on my '02 F350 7.3 and it's time for a rebuild. Thanks for the videos and giving me the motivation and knowledge to move forward on my project.
Folks are going to hold on to those old 7.3 PS and 5.9 Cummins for as long as they can and I don’t blame them. They may not put out the ridiculously high torque numbers that the newer smog diesels do but at least they will stay together for a long time.
Oliver of Snowball engineering is the man to watch regarding Line Boring , he made and adapted his line borer ( I think you mentioned Snowball engineering channel). Regarding your wife being into farm animals- good for her, my wife was into other men including the local minister !!! -long gone
my local machine shop takes forever. my dad used to do machinework in the garage i rent but dad passed in june local shop has had a willys flathead to finish hone ,ream new guides to size and valve job new seats, and deck block.still dont have back. am in process of going through dads machines cleaning and changing coolants and cutting oils and will go pickup block and finish myself.
Getting your first pair of reading glasses, Warren, it's like a right of passage. I recall the first time I reached for my glasses and realised just how much I needed them. I am sure you will benefit greatly for having them.
I am dreading the day I will need glasses, I have always heard that vision starts to go after the age of 40 and I am past that by a few years. I have 20/10 vision so maybe I will get lucky and end up with 20/20.

I will spot tiny cracks in things and if I am working with other people they can't see the cracks and don't believe me until they get a magnifying glass to see them.

Another Great Video, Warren. I hope your foot is doing better. I was thinking about making sure the Cam Bearing Oil Holes were lined up, and you took the flashlight and checked. I don’t trust anyone, especially when I have to warranty it. Funny what you said about your Leatherman, we have a saying “they could rip the stuffing out of a ball bearing” Just Insert whatever person or trade in the saying. Leatherman should make a Warren edition. I was wondering about the harbor freight torque wrench, I take the batteries out of my torque wrench after using it, I had batteries leak and ruin tools. Thanks again for dragging us along on the adventure.
Warren you’re a hell of a mechanic I’m a cat field service mechanic but i dont know how the hell you keep up with everything you do with how much of a mess you have everywhere
I have been finally working on organizing my tools better as well, and building up a set for my house. Its easy to just keep "getting by" and putting it off, but its so nice having a nice set of tools handy to actually do what you need to do rather than make 100 trips back and forth.
Yeah man I had a snap-on tech wrench as well. The earth connection between the cap & the handle was a problem & snapon knew it was a problem because they changed the design of the handle & incorporated a steel ring around the later versions to preventthe handle from flexing. I tried claiming warranty & each time it was just outside the 12 month period, I only use it a handful of times a year - engine work, compressors & Ariel's & it cost me every time. It would switch itself off while you were using it & you'd be getting close to torque waiting for the beep & it wouldn't. The last time it played up I smashed it to bits gave it back to the snapon man & told him to stick it in his arse. Went & bought a Warren & Brown. Exactly like you say a lot of their hand tools are awesome, but they rely on their name.

As far as you foot goes getting it comfortable during and after the healing is a challenge, but being 20 years older I always were cushion socks and a cushion insoles, and I appreciate the mechanical challenge you take on!!
Hey Warren I am independent just like your self, your videos convinced me to buy a texa. So I wanted to say if you need convincing on what line bore to buy I own a York machine tools line bore with there auto welder and have been very happy with it.
I said this a few years ago, i will say it again. You have a great mind, you coulda been a brain surgeon or mega-lawyer. The amount of data stored in your head is amazing.
Sorry to hear you mashed your Paw. The Military used FM, VHF, and UHF Comm. Radios in Huey's back in the day. You could get a VHF radio for free when they decommissioned the helicopters. Best wishes for a quick recovery. I got hatched in 1952, myself.

I did a lot of line bore work on a lot of different equipment from industrial to construction material heavy equipment, loved the job because every job presented different challenges to deal with, I think you will do well with it Warren. I have the same torque wrench. I love it. I recognized the sound when you started using it. Mine has been through a number of engine, transmission and axle rebuilds. The only thing I can say negative about it is that the battery life seems low.

My dad used to call those people that were hard to get through to hard headed and me too sometimes . Warren , those machine shops that forget to send back parts do yourself a favor and take out the gallery plugs before you send the block in , you'll never be in that spot again .
I know you have to keep going, but try to go easy and let that foot heal. Been there done that 1 time too many. I’ve got about 10 years on you and working smarter not harder has become a necessary thing. Good luck
This was great… including rando stories too boot. No “boot” pun intended; in fact, sorry to hear about that injury.. I’ve been there, done that & damn that took what felt like forever to “kinda” fully heal! Came across your YT chan here, doing research via YT, besides other sources, for info pertaining to just the lifters in these 7.3’s, as I’m now fairly certain this is the issue I’ve been having with mine these past few months. I use my SD PS sparingly, as I absolutely need her, due to *STUPID FUEL COST &, *audible, abnormal clack noises from @ #3 cyl area (during tests, low to no contribution from #3) *steady oil leak trickle from turbo pedestal I’ve been putting off (injector job was over a year ago now; oil leak began oh, about 4 months ago, not related) replaced them o-rings yesterday, finally! &, *relatively high-ish-kinda millage/time on original 7.3 @ now, 375K on ODO. Anywho, i fully AND CORRECTLY refurbished/reconditioned/rebuilt all injectors (@ a year ago like I’d already mentioned) &, upon reassembly, damned glow plugs were prematurely installed… BEFORE ‘hand tool turning’ over engine several spins to purge out any oil that may have trickled down into cyl’s while injectors were out! Instead, I had bumped her over w/remote start button, to build up some oil into HPOP system & whatever else… starter was already on the frits so, when engine abruptly stopped turning over after maybe 2 rev’s, I figured then that the old starter had finally given out her last puff… which indeed was the case “BUT ALSO”(🤬) not.. at that exact moment the engine stopped turning over using remote started button, my heart about quite for an instant, as it then & there kicked in that I’d forgotten to purge any oil out!! Quickly pulled all glow plugs & did just that. Not a whole lotta oil squirted out but definitely some. Installed new starter (had on hand already from some months pryer, waiting I guess for original to take a poop), reassembled everything and all good.. less that NEW sound, from #3. I’m thinking what had occurred wasn’t full-on hydro-lock but partial… enough oil displacement in cyl, to definitely increase compression, forcing higher then normal compression pressures against valve heads &, subsequently down to lifters.. that whole injector job took oh, over the course of @ 2.5 months, pecking at that w/what minimal “free time” I had then (life!), so 99.9% of engine oil had definitely enough time to make its way to pan. That initial bumping of engine turn-over using damned remote switch INSTEAD OF JUST A RATCHET/SOCKET 🤬, must’ve been enough to fully collapse at least one lifter, bottoming out, increasing odds of staying stuck down! 🤬🤬🤬 We live & learn, daily… No bent valves, no bent push rods or, excessive blow-by. Nor any abnormal intake or exhaust pressure spikes indicated

Did you mean IC WELD, I like that channel. Snowball engineering, that guy is innovative and makes a lot of his own tooling. I got tired of women who lied to me and cheated, that was my experience, I would definitely like to have a woman who raised livestock and was willing to go collect parts . I have an old click type Williams torque wrench, sent out for calibrating and after 20 years, its 2% under reading ! Glad to see you up and around, its certainly hard to keep a good man down.
Same here with the women and the torque wrench. Bought my old Mac torque wrench used in 2001 and it was dead on with the tester tool on Snap On truck last week. Learned many years ago to stay away from most tools with batteries.
I watch On Fire Welding too Cutting Edge Eng. is pretty cool guy also. IC weld, you need to check him out. He does about the same thing as On Fire Welding does, except in Texas.

I had the snap on one too. Totally unreliable junk. I went back to using a sharpie for torque angle stuff and a OG click style torque wrench for the rest. No sense introducing a potential for failure in hardware that will take out an entire build if it fails. 👌👌
I’m glad to see a review from a mechanic I trust on that torque wrench. I need a new 1/2 one but didn’t want to pay snap on prices and have been looking at the Quinn one. I think I’ll go pick one up.
Good morning Warren, another great video! However, when you're lifting a crankshaft, whether it's out of a cat Cummins or Ford 7.3, lift with your legs brother! My back screamed when you pick that sucker up. Keep up the good work.
The last rebuild i did the machibe shop didnt change out the press in plugs in the heads.(351M) on start up i noticed a ticking and determined it was an exhaust tick. Thought the exhaust manifold. Nope! It was the plug on the front of the passenger side head. Hmm! 1/2" plug. Replaced that without too much difficulty thinking I was lucky it wasn't the other side which was up against the firewall. Ha! The drivers side was also burned through. These are plugs plugging machine holes for the egr system. Now that one was a pain in the ass. I finally figured out that i could weld a cut off 1/2" end mill to a old socket and used my milwaukee ratchet and milked the damn thing out. I made a screw press to push against the firewall and got the new plug in. I was not happy that after all that money they missed something like that.
Nice work man, used to do a few of these, but they were pretty stout on the bottom end. Great engine, but expensive fuel system. We could get close to 600000 on these with one injector and H/P oil pump change around 350000. Dang oil leaks in the valley were always a pain in the a## but luckily we didn’t use them in pickup truck applications, much easier to work on in van chassis. Then the classic oil pan dipstick tube leaks grrrr
Worst torque wrench I ever bought was that snapon fker always dead batterys then you get close to the end and it goes dead - lost it in a shop fire , probably the batteries caught took the shop with it - thanks for the videos
I have had the same (cheapest) Leatherman (R) Tool on my belt every day since 1998. It has my initials engraved on it....I keep it sharp. Huey had VHF Comm. radio back in the day. I am sorry to hear you mashed your Paw. Best wishes for a quick recovery from Brunswick, Maine, US....
Warren, be careful with the airpump pressure on your support boot. I had one for an artificial ankle replacement and I over pumped it and have myself an ulcer.
Not for an American made tool that will stay in calibration for your lifetime. I don’t regret buying any of my SnapOn torque wrenches. I have one 1/2 drive torque wrench that is 40 years old and used weekly and it’s still in calibration. Obviously if I were just a do-it-yourselfer I wouldn’t pay that much for torque wrenches. My son who is also a mechanic in the USMC will still be using them when I am gone.
Previst8686 I have snap on , Mac and Quinn , also a home Depot husky and several beam dial type , all work but over 500.00 for a tq wrench isn't worth the cost : note also have had tested and the most accurate is the 39 $ home Depot Husky LoL. All of mine except the 39 $ one gets calibrated every year or 2 because I build A Lot of engine's been doing this over 30 years . At One time Snap On was the best but for guys that work tools hard it's not always the best option .
Just think if c.a.r.b didn't have such restrictions you probably would have seen a Cat under the hood. Get well Warren thanks for sharing and the updates.

I just bought a Quinn 3/8" socket set chrome - shallow/deep well from Harbor Freight - seems pretty good - both metric and SAE - no missing sockets

I have an old click type Williams torque wrench, sent out for calibrating and after 20 years, its 2% under reading !

Same here with the women and the torque wrench. Bought my old Mac torque wrench used in 2001 and it was dead on with the tester tool on Snap On truck last week. Learned many years ago to stay away from most tools with batteries.
I watch On Fire Welding too Cutting Edge Eng. is pretty cool guy also. IC weld, you need to check him out. He does about the same thing as On Fire Welding does, except in Texas.
Those radial fractures hurt but heal up fine eventually so you don't have to worry.

Warren as a guy that sends a lot of stuff to machine shops I take all plugs out before I send anything to them plugs dowl pins ECT .
Best practice if you don't want it lost.

I had the snap on one too. Totally unreliable junk. I went back to using a sharpie for torque angle stuff and a OG click style torque wrench for the rest. No sense introducing a potential for failure in hardware that will take out an entire build if it fails. 👌👌

I’m glad to see a review from a mechanic I trust on that torque wrench. I need a new 1/2 one but didn’t want to pay snap on prices and have been looking at the Quinn one. I think I’ll go pick one up.

The last rebuild i did the machibe shop didnt change out the press in plugs in the heads.(351M) on start up i noticed a ticking and determined it was an exhaust tick. Thought the exhaust manifold. Nope! It was the plug on the front of the passenger side head. Hmm! 1/2" plug. Replaced that without too much difficulty thinking I was lucky it wasn't the other side which was up against the firewall. Ha! The drivers side was also burned through. These are plugs plugging machine holes for the egr system. Now that one was a pain in the ass. I finally figured out that i could weld a cut off 1/2" end mill to a old socket and used my milwaukee ratchet and milked the damn thing out. I made a screw press to push against the firewall and got the new plug in. I was not happy that after all that money they missed something like that.

Nice work man, used to do a few of these, but they were pretty stout on the bottom end. Great engine, but expensive fuel system. We could get close to 600000 on these with one injector and H/P oil pump change around 350000. Dang oil leaks in the valley were always a pain in the a## but luckily we didn’t use them in pickup truck applications, much easier to work on in van chassis. Then the classic oil pan dipstick tube leaks grrrr

Worst torque wrench I ever bought was that snapon fker always dead batterys then you get close to the end and it goes dead - lost it in a shop fire , probably the batteries caught took the shop with it - thanks for the videos

I was always told that the only purpose of the tang was to ensure the bearing was installed in the correct orientation.

I have had the same (cheapest) Leatherman (R) Tool on my belt every day since 1998. It has my initials engraved on it....I keep it sharp.

Warren, be careful with the airpump pressure on your support boot. I had one for an artificial ankle replacement and I over pumped it and have myself an ulcer.
The Quinn torque wrenchs work very well , snap on and most tool trucks are way over priced
Not for an American made tool that will stay in calibration for your lifetime. I don’t regret buying any of my SnapOn torque wrenches. I have one 1/2 drive torque wrench that is 40 years old and used weekly and it’s still in calibration. Obviously if I were just a do-it-yourselfer I wouldn’t pay that much for torque wrenches. My son who is also a mechanic in the USMC will still be using them when I am gone.
Previst8686 I have snap on , Mac and Quinn , also a home Depot husky and several beam dial type , all work but over 500.00 for a tq wrench isn't worth the cost : note also have had tested and the most accurate is the 39 $ home Depot Husky LoL. All of mine except the 39 $ one gets calibrated every year or 2 because I build A Lot of engine's been doing this over 30 years . At One time Snap On was the best but for guys that work tools hard it's not always the best option .
