  • I've uploaded all 24 episodes in high quality, enjoy them! X-Bomber was renamed Star Fleet and dubbed by English speaking actors for broadcast in the United Kingdom on ITV. The show was broadcast there on Saturday mornings, first airing on October 23, 1982,[4] the day before Star Wars aired for the first time on British television. Due to its broadcast slot, the advertisements shown before, during and after each episode frequently included children's Public Information Films. The series was also broadcast as such on first-run syndication in the United States.
Drawing heavily on diverse influences such as Star Wars, Japanese Anime and Gerry Anderson's various "Supermarionation" series, the show ran for twenty-four half-hour episodes (twenty-five in Japan - the eighteenth episode, titled Bloody Mary's Promotion, was not included in the English version, as it consisted mainly of flashbacks). The English version's theme song was composed by Paul Bliss,[5] and was later covered by Queen member Brian May and Van Halen guitarist Eddie Van Halen. This was released under the name "Star Fleet Project".
The screenplay was adapted for English by Michael Sloan, who in later years would create the popular TV series The Master and The Equalizer.
Actress Denise Bryer ("Commander Makara") and editor Tony Lenny both went on to collaborate with Gerry Anderson and Christopher Burr making another memorable sci-fi series, Terrahawks.

Yeah 45 about to turn 46 in Jan.
This was my fav TV show at the time it aired on British TV.
It first episode aired in late October of 1982 a day before star wars premiered on British TV.
I think what liked about was that whilst it was a children's show, it didn't treat us as children.
The fact that each episode continued the story was something new to kids TV at that time (atleast for that age group)

Totally agree with you there. Saturday mornings ITV , Think it was 10 or 10.30 am it was on either this or Terrahawks. I think Starfleet was the better show too, a lot more darker and interesting storyline over a 24 episode arc.

I remember this show since I was a wee nipper in the early 80s. Incredibly it still holds up today for kids. No cheap CGI rubbish. It still feels "serious" too and is much darker in tone than say Thunderbirds. I love the main villains and the design of both X-Bomber and the HUGE Imperial Battleship.

I think kids needs a darker tone to their dramas theses days. Try and catch the original version of Battle Of The Planets cartoon, another Japanese production, it is called Gatchaman Space Ninjas.
I think the BBC began to sweat as the tone got darker and darker, major characters died like flies and the chief villain, Zoltar turned out to be transsexual. I always wondered why they dropped it all of a sudden?

I even remember my brother and I, aged 7 and 8, howling in derision when that fruity robot, 7-Zark-7 appeared, it’s sole purpose to dilute a gripping and disturbing outcome. It was so obvious a major character had died, but the annoying turd used to come out with lines like “I am pleased to say ********* ejected at the last moment.” Yeah - right.
I also recall it was ahead of its time in environmental issues. One agonising scene, was some giant mammoth Spectra mecha they had to destroy, perched atop a mountain. Tiny refuses to fire missles, because a herd of deer and their young are running beneath.......
Please let me know how the original is? I have not managed to watch, yet.

Weird how a TV show or clip can even bring back memories of other things that happened around the time it was shown - people, places, things that happened, smells, tastes even! I saw this again and was straight back in the late 1st year/early 2nd year of high school. I can now remember things I'd long forgotten about that time - even the smell of the classrooms and the lunch hall. This series was created in 1980 but I remember a local channel in my country showing reruns of this show in 1992. I must be in the 1st or 2nd grade then. When school is over, I immediately run towards home to watch the show.😂 Sigh, nostalgic.❤️

Fun fact: Star Fleet/X-Bomber was created by Go Nagai, a highly prolific Japanese comic creator. He's probably best known in the UK for the anime adaptations of his adult work that were part of the anime as new video nasty scandals of the 90s like Devilman, Violence Jack and Kekko Kamen. A lot of his work garnered controversy in Japan, especially one of his early manga which was basically a raunchy (by the standards of 70s Japan) sex comedy that scandalised parents.
But he was also a big fan of science fiction, especially mecha and revolutionised the genre a a couple of times. Most notably Mazinger Z was the first time a giant robot had a pilot, and Getter Robo was the first time the robot was made up of smaller vehicles that combined. Without Nagai we might not have had Gundam, Macross/Robotech, the entire Super Sentai/Power Rangers franchise...

    2 more things...
    1:
Let us give a huge shout out of respect to Denise Bryer (92) as the voice of Commander Makara respectively. It's a very tough feat to make being a villan original, fun and memorable. Especially for kids and ESPECIALLY when Star Wars was at its undeniable peak and the Star Trek films were gaining strength (not to mention all the other franchises moving in to space territory in some fashion).
    2:
THAT music. Now I'm not talking about any particular song or track here. I mean the whole soundtrack that was used throughout the whole series. Whether it was X-Bomber launching or passing Mars whilst escorting vessels or Shiro & Lamia Desertion to the Skull ship or the Imperial Alliance March/Battleship or the actions of a heroic Dr Benn... It all was fantastic and that's not even mentioning the main theme for the credits.
I still have the original VHS cassettes in my loft as they only came out here as two feature films. So I saw the start...then the end. Not much of a middle. When I came across the (appropriately 90s looking) SFXB website, I couldn't describe the elation I felt. As sad as it sounds, it was like finding a long lost family member. I didn't tell her my daughter that though, just in case she made me choose lmao jokes.
    Take care all.
    CHIZ
