As an Eagles fan... this is a similar situation to what we went through in the 2018 off season. Had the front office traded Wentz for high draft picks, signed Foles to a 4 or 5 year sub $100 mil deal and used the saving for acquiring strong secondary players, we would have made a fee more runs for the SB BEFORE the Hurts era began (we got lucky woth Hurts being a proven winner). The Vikings should NOT interfere with the chemistry of the team dynamic. The players, staff, coaches, and fans love Sam Darnold. Might as well trade the rookie and sign Sam to a lower end contract that won't break the bank.. and use the saving to boost up their defense. That would be the smart thing to do. There is no insurance that the rookie can be as good or better than Sam was this season (or that the everybody will take to him like they do Sam).
Best take in my opinion, trade the rookie for a first rounder and a couple of picks and bolster defenses seems logical. Negotiate him to take a realistic pay bump with another 1 year contract extension and see what happens. At worse you probably have like a 10-7 year and move on, at best he takes you on a deep playoff run
Don't think they are a super bowl caliber this year and can't see how they would be next year if they start McCarthy, he wasn't touted to be as good as JT Daniels, Lamar Jackson, or any other instant game changing rookies with absurd athleticism. Unless Sam Darnold has a great playoffs, it doesn't seem like the Vikings will keep him. As long as JJ McCarthy is healthy, why wouldn't the Vikings and their QB guru, Kevin O'Connell, mold McCarthy into what they envision, while they have him on his rookie deal? With that receiver corp, there's a lot of room for success. IMHO
He is out a whole year with injury tho. You cant confidently say he will 100% get things going right away. Even if they let Darnold go they need to go out and sign another bridge QB and see how McCarthy recovers. Pretty clear Darnold doesn't have the athleticism or the accuracy to be a top 10 paid QB. The Vikings beat up on a lot of bad teams or teams that were injured/down. He's basically a Jimmy Garoppolo type of guy. Good enough to throw to open star receivers but not to dodge a rush and make a pinpoint pass on the run. No shot the vikings keep him. Two possibilities: He goes for the bag with the Giants or Raiders and sucks, or he does another prove it deal with maybe a bit more money and years with a better supporting cast (Seahawks? Cardinals?)
I dont think it's that big If Sam takes Vikings to Super Bowl, than sign him to an extension. If Vikes lose in 1st or 2nd round of payoffs, go according to the plan and hand keys to McCarthy
As a Vikings fan hopefully this decision got a lot easier for KOC. We have two top ten drafted QB’s behind Darnold, we can do similar or better with them- move on.
Who’s the quarterbacks? Who would you start next year? Who do you think is the most handsome out of all the choices? I haven watched a football game all year but I’m genuinely curious. Please answer my questions and I’ll make sure the universe sends you a blowjob this year.
Well as a Minnesota guy, Darnold completely shit the bed and KOC didn’t do him any favors. He’d have to blow up in LA against the Rams. The thing is, Vikings fans are so used to massive buildups and rugpulls, that they’re some of the most psychologically abused fanbases out there. The safe move for the Vikings front office is tag and trade Darnold and move on with JJ McCarthy. That’ll be what other teams want too. $38 million with the option to dump him or renegotiate to something reasonable after he shits the bed there. It’s too bad. Darnold was doing great, but the key is also winning under the bright lights in the big games.
Sam Darnald is an accurate passer under pressure until he gets scared 😱 or nervouse and then he has a problem over throwing or under throwing his receivers. He was 0-4 in the Red Zone. The passes were not accurate at all. This negative momentum affected the entire team. The kicker made it easy for the Lions to score 14 points. Van Ginkel dropped an easy pick that led to another 7 points. This could have been an easy win for the Vikings. Darnold has some psychological problems that need to be fixed, or they will not leave LA with a win.
I told everyone at my favorite bar before this game sam darnold was garbage, the lions exposed his ass, put pressure on him and he folds like a wet blanket.
If I’m Min I’m resigning Sam to a 2-3 year deal, I keep JJ and continue to develop him. JJ is coming off of an injury and surgery, you don’t know the state he will be from that injury. The league doesn’t give QBs time to develop, this would make JJ develop under Sam and once JJ is ready he takes over and you keep Sam as the backup
Sam hasn't changed from the bust he is. The Vikings have a great coaching staff & lots of offensive talent that would make any QB be better. There's a bin full of these QBs that had a flash in the pan season and tanking after. That's Darnold.
They have to let Darnold walk. Not because of this one game, but because of financial reality with Addison also coming up to a contract extension. Minnesota has shown they can take literally ANY QB and turn him into an All-Pro. Give Daniel Jones a 1-2 year prove-it deal, and have him 1A/1B with JJ McCarthy - he is where the Vikings future leads.
They’ll see how they go in the playoffs and then likely franchise tag Darnold. Teams may well make offers for McCarthy meaning they can grab probably a first rounder or two and still have Mullens and Jones as backups.
RIP Gary Anderson...oh - and don't expect anybody in the land of 10,000 lakes to EVER buy you a beer. If that ever happens...Gary...you better have it tested.
Vikings can franchise him as a one year rental? It would be expensive for one year but less expensive then extending him long term. I think he might be fool's gold.
Long Time Fan here Mike! i distinctly remember you saying the Bengles should Draft Peni Sewell. Like its all good, but you keep telling us that Jets thing, its not true. Love the content. You dont have to have a perfect record, WE love you for being you. keep up the great content. Happy Hannuka (or happy holidays,) Mike :) in 2025 Keep doing You! Dont stop!
I always knew Sam darnold had great potential I mean most QBS can’t be good when your drafted to a bad jets team then traded to the panthers and browns or viseversa idk but then he got some tips at 49ers and now he is on a good team and he looks great
Lol bro had this in the vault😂😂😂. But yeah my stance on this has been the same even throughout this good szn he’s had. As long as the Vikings don’t overpay they should just keep him until the wheels fall off. I’d say maybe just 1, at max 2 year deal. He’s the perfect game manager for this rebuilding Vikings team rn + it would give Jj more time to learn and develop
nah just move on from darnold and go with the kid he's cheaper and the vikings system is qb friendly. Just ask yourself do you see darnold going to a team like the raiders or titans and having a good season?
I'll expand on the negotiating power, Sam Darnold should know that this is his best bet for a solid career. He should be willing to not take as much since he knows he'd likely not replicate these results on another team. He's got second best receiving core behind the Bengals and the best receiver in the league. He knows if he can deliver on another 1 year deal this situation could possibly be indefinite for the remainder of his career. You can tell his teammates have bought into him as the starter, why would you start that process over again.
Sam darnold is an absolute joke and this is why the Vikings drafted JJ McCarthy. He had a decent year this year and all the hype got to him. Bro completely BLEW IT. 3 wide open touchdowns. 3. Absolutely ridiculous
If a QB can suffer from factors outside of their control. 1. Lacking other playmakers - running backs, receivers and tight ends. 2. Poor play calling. Even a Defense that doesn’t keep the opposing teams offense off the field or a Special Teams unit that routinely gives you a bad starting point for your drives.
Saying the Seahawks need a QB is wild. Give Geno an O-line and and Offensive Coordinator who knows what Play Action and a Run game are and he'll be top 12 in the League EASY.
During that draft, Chris Simms said the #1 and #2 QBs of that class were Lamar and Josh Allen, followed by Baker then Darnold. People should go back and listen to Simms analysis. It turned out the analysis has been 100% accurate. I think the Vikes need to move on to JJ after this season, but Darnold has been decent this year.
This was a fluke year for Darnold I doubt he’ll ever repeat another great season like this. They should stick with their rookie and not break the bank for Darnold because if they do I think he’ll be worse than Cousins who was ok, just choked in the playoffs
The reason Vikings lost was because of the offense. We couldn’t capitalize on any drive. We really could’ve stole the momentum in first half. Which would’ve resulted in Gibbs not being the gameplan for the 2nd half.
It just shows you tonight's game against Detroit Lions he was not prepared for that at all it was like he was playing with the Jets all over again he's not ready for this positions Minnesota still needs a quarterback a good quarterback he'll be good for a backup quarterback for Minnesota but as a starting quarterback no he's not ready for a position like this
Vikes QB coach Josh McCown and Darnold go way back to Jets Days. McCown is known as a great teammate and QB mentor. I think Sam D and Josh Mc Do another year before McCown picks up a head coaching gig down the road.
I’m thankful for what Sam has done for us this season but I don’t think we’ll keep him after we drafted our future franchise qb he’s a still a bridge qb for McCarthy to start next season
What offensive linemen should the Vikings acquire to protect their moneymaker? With negligible draft opportunities, it seems we need to find a few free agents.
Someone help me to understand.... How is Jefferson considered one of the best receivers... Yes I know he has the yards and the accolades to go with them but from what I saw last night when games are on the line... Jefferson folds, dude had 2 of 7 for 48 yards... Got punked by an inside corner who plays physical and he lost majority of his battles. So how? How? 🤨
Putting all the blame on Darnold isn't right, this was overall the worst offensive performance from the Vikings this year. The receivers couldn't get open, Darnold was getting pressured frequently, and the play calling was questionable at times. Darnold did miss some very key throws, but I believe he can bounce back, QBs will have bad games, as long as he doesn't let this affect him and affect his performance moving forward into the playoffs. I still think it would be wise to bring him back if the Vikings can get him on a fair deal.
I think they should tag him, and see if he can duplicate this season. Like the Giants should have done with Jones. There is nothing wrong with JJ sitting. Then make your desission next year based on the results.
Anything Darnold did with the jets doesn't count....well...because they're the jets....just ask Rogers. My thoughts is he will remain playing really well for a few years if he's on this Vikings squad. He will end up a lot like Purdy, who actully plays prretty well but has been figured out by defenses. A few good seasons with tapering results. The playoffs I think will determine whether or not they tag him.
I say keep darnold. As a redskins fan, we were slated to take JJ had the bears went for jd5. We didn’t want a diva (Caleb) taking the helms. JJ is sus if you ask me. Darnold may not be top 10 qb but he has chemistry with his receiving core and coaches.
The Vikings and Niners have built their teams where they just need a system quarterback. Vikings can easily sign Jimmy G. Be in the playoffs next season.
The decision ultimately will likely come down to, are the Vikings confident that McCarthy will match or outperform Darnold. If they think Darnold elevated their system and opposed to just existing in it, they will probably trade jj, if they think Darnolds performance was largely BECAUSE of the system, they will trade Darnold, most likely to the titans. I think the Vikings given all they accomplished with Darnold have enough respect for him to not ship him back to the jets. Also, broncos fan here. Osweiler was not “very good” while filling in for manning. He was really tolerable lmao.
Last year I studied all the quarterbacks.. I noticed that scouts are very loud about Patrick mahomes like prospects but they are very quiet about the Tom Brady like prospects.. let Brock Purdy cook give him some time.. I'm going to just put this right here as soon as JJ McCarthy gets enough real game experience he's going to blow people away. 15:19 I'm telling you if you look at their mechanics and timing when they came out of college, Tom Brady and JJ McCarthy you're looking at a very similar player.. that's why coach Kevin O'Connell wants him and wants to play him, I don't think there's another veteran better to lead him than Sam Donald.. Sam darnold is a perfect example of what could happen to a good QB like Kirk or Foles and may be able to save JJ McCarthy all that struggle. I'm telling you a 27-year-old JJ McCarthy is scary and he'll play if he plays for another 13 years and could accumulate a career that we will definitely talk about.

I told everyone at my favorite bar before this game sam darnold was garbage, the lions exposed his ass, put pressure on him and he folds like a wet blanket.
Wet blankets are extremely hard to fold
If I’m Min I’m resigning Sam to a 2-3 year deal, I keep JJ and continue to develop him. JJ is coming off of an injury and surgery, you don’t know the state he will be from that injury.
The league doesn’t give QBs time to develop, this would make JJ develop under Sam and once JJ is ready he takes over and you keep Sam as the backup
Sam hasn't changed from the bust he is. The Vikings have a great coaching staff & lots of offensive talent that would make any QB be better. There's a bin full of these QBs that had a flash in the pan season and tanking after. That's Darnold.
great video Mike, you look healthy too. Happy new year!
Love your video Mike and keep up the great work you are awesome
Before this season, when I thought of Sam Darnold, “I’m seeing ghosts” was my first thought.
He laid a massive egg last night if he doesnt win at least 2 playoff games let him go.
The last thing Darold wants is to go prove himself again somewhere. He’ll sign a team friendly if they offer it
Calling a 3 year 100 mil deal a pay cut is insane! Definitely take that all day to stay with a contender with weapons all day
It depends how far they go in the playoffs and how darnold performs
They’ll see how they go in the playoffs and then likely franchise tag Darnold. Teams may well make offers for McCarthy meaning they can grab probably a first rounder or two and still have Mullens and Jones as backups.
Gosh damn!!!! WTF was that? Sammy seeing ghosts all over again
Franchise Sam for one more year and see if he’s got another good season.
He’s had one good season…
Let JJ keep getting healthy.
This is not the best Vikings season of all time. They went 15-1.
The best since only if they win at least 1 playoff game. Think that is possible.
Happy Hannuka (or happy holidays,) Mike :)
in 2025 Keep doing You!
Yeah but you can't be saying that, who do you see goin there and having a good year?
@danieldonnelly6205 the top 10 guys
@danieldonnelly6205 I can just see guys like Danny dimes, kirk cousins, having good years on the vikings.
Sam Darnold looks like the greatest American sniper 😂
Sam was not the only problem but he did expose himself and remind us why it would be a mistake to be considered as out future starting QB .
Darnold is the new Fitzpatrick.
Mike is the G.O.A.T yall subscribe! Let's get my man to a milli !
I want JJ McCarthy tbh
Sam darnold is an absolute joke and this is why the Vikings drafted JJ McCarthy. He had a decent year this year and all the hype got to him. Bro completely BLEW IT. 3 wide open touchdowns. 3. Absolutely ridiculous
when are you gonna make the denver broncos video??? i been waiting MONTHS for it 😭😭😭
Brother clicked upload as soon as he saw 0:00 on the clock 💀
If a QB can suffer from factors outside of their control.
1. Lacking other playmakers - running backs, receivers and tight ends.
2. Poor play calling.
Even a Defense that doesn’t keep the opposing teams offense off the field or a Special Teams unit that routinely gives you a bad starting point for your drives.
Same old Vikings. They get your hopes up just so the disappointment comes with maximum pain. I should have known better.
Saying the Seahawks need a QB is wild. Give Geno an O-line and and Offensive Coordinator who knows what Play Action and a Run game are and he'll be top 12 in the League EASY.
Didn’t Randell Cunningham win 15 games?
Yep
Yes but when you factor in recency bias 14-3 is better than 15-1
Randle missed two games hurt and brad Johnston played those two games
During that draft, Chris Simms said the #1 and #2 QBs of that class were Lamar and Josh Allen, followed by Baker then Darnold. People should go back and listen to Simms analysis. It turned out the analysis has been 100% accurate.
I think the Vikes need to move on to JJ after this season, but Darnold has been decent this year.
This was a fluke year for Darnold I doubt he’ll ever repeat another great season like this. They should stick with their rookie and not break the bank for Darnold because if they do I think he’ll be worse than Cousins who was ok, just choked in the playoffs
Sam is a product of the team and coaching staff around him. If things aren't perfect, he crumbles. The Rams will also exploit this next week.
People said the same thing about Jerrod Goff when he was with the Rams. Look at him now…
Darnold should definitely stay with the Vikings, look at the way he’s playing they are in the playoffs cuz of him
The reason Vikings lost was because of the offense. We couldn’t capitalize on any drive. We really could’ve stole the momentum in first half. Which would’ve resulted in Gibbs not being the gameplan for the 2nd half.
Too many guys to pay next year. Either the O-line will be terrible, or the secondary will be. McCarthy will be our QB and will not be the problem.
Sam Darnold doesn't play hero ball. He's just a hero.
It just shows you tonight's game against Detroit Lions he was not prepared for that at all it was like he was playing with the Jets all over again he's not ready for this positions Minnesota still needs a quarterback a good quarterback he'll be good for a backup quarterback for Minnesota but as a starting quarterback no he's not ready for a position like this
Im going with the non-frauded option which is McCarthy
Vikes QB coach Josh McCown and Darnold go way back to Jets Days. McCown is known as a great teammate and QB mentor. I think Sam D and Josh Mc Do another year before McCown picks up a head coaching gig down the road.
every time we got to near the touchdown Sam Darnold kept overthrowing it, im kind of scared on how the super bowl will go based on that game
I’m thankful for what Sam has done for us this season but I don’t think we’ll keep him after we drafted our future franchise qb he’s a still a bridge qb for McCarthy to start next season
Seahawks I'd guess try to trade for Jj but we need to keep Geno for 1 more year. Geno is not that bad bro.
Great breakdown, Mike.
Completely forgot they had Danny dimes😂
What offensive linemen should the Vikings acquire to protect their moneymaker? With negligible draft opportunities, it seems we need to find a few free agents.
Sam D is at a discount and producing results. Get more protection and more WR like Jefferson. They look great!
So how? How? 🤨
its simple. hes not
Sam Darnold went back to Default seasons
if Darnold (or his agent) isn't listening to reduced offers from Minnesota... best wishes to your next chapter Sammy! 🥸
The game just ended dawg you crazy fr😂😂😂
Anything Darnold did with the jets doesn't count....well...because they're the jets....just ask Rogers. My thoughts is he will remain playing really well for a few years if he's on this Vikings squad. He will end up a lot like Purdy, who actully plays prretty well but has been figured out by defenses. A few good seasons with tapering results. The playoffs I think will determine whether or not they tag him.
Giving a qb not named Allen, Jackson or Mahomes 40-60 million a year is a disaster waiting to happen
I say keep darnold. As a redskins fan, we were slated to take JJ had the bears went for jd5. We didn’t want a diva (Caleb) taking the helms. JJ is sus if you ask me. Darnold may not be top 10 qb but he has chemistry with his receiving core and coaches.
You are awesome Love your video Mike and keep up the great work
The Vikings and Niners have built their teams where they just need a system quarterback. Vikings can easily sign Jimmy G. Be in the playoffs next season.
Hope they win it all, just for Sam
The decision ultimately will likely come down to, are the Vikings confident that McCarthy will match or outperform Darnold. If they think Darnold elevated their system and opposed to just existing in it, they will probably trade jj, if they think Darnolds performance was largely BECAUSE of the system, they will trade Darnold, most likely to the titans. I think the Vikings given all they accomplished with Darnold have enough respect for him to not ship him back to the jets.
Also, broncos fan here. Osweiler was not “very good” while filling in for manning. He was really tolerable lmao.
I hope they move on. Stick with JJ McCarthy
Sam darnold had a tough night vs a lions team that was vicious. It wasn’t their night but they will make it through round 1
