  • HOMELITE Super Xl Automatic still runs today after so long!!! this chainsaw I got from my grandpa and after so many years the carburetor has never been rebuilt and still to this day in 2023 it still runs like a brand new one. This old saws are real man saws they are pretty heavy and have a lot of vibration but remember before this they had cross cut saw’s, so this was the Cadillac of wood cutting. I hope you enjoy the video I take an old saw and put it to work.

My dad gave me his old red one- just serviced, carb is tuned and it runs like a top. I only use E0 gasoline in it. Just used it the other day to fell a mulberry tree- too big for the little plastic saw, sure worked great. He got the red one after his older blue one got crushed by a rotten trunk that slipped as he was cutting. OTOH sure glad I have the little plastic saw for cutting the limbs- flipping around that 24" bar on the XL is a bit of work!

My father also bought this blue model in the early 70s. We are Italians and live near Milan.
The amount of wood cut is incalculable. Never had any breakdowns, has a Homelite SDC carburettor.
I use it when the work is demanding with chestnut.
I keep it like a precious stone, better than a Rolex.
    Indestructible, great American objects.

Just Subscribed. We own over a 100 chainsaws. mostly Homelites. I have a XL12 my father bought in 1964. We cut firewood today and used 5 different saws. 2 where 58 CC Red Xl automatics. one was a 54 CC 101 homelite. another a copy of a XL12 a Poulan that has 59 CC and the last a Lombard that looks like a XL 12 that has 68 CC. Im 71 and dont get along with plastic chainsaws.

58.2cc saw made 71-79 in both the red and the blue paint scheme. The Super XL Auto was made in the States by Textron, and by Terry in Canada as the XL Auto. The 58.2cc motor was sort of the small block Chevy for Homelite mid 60's or so until early '80s. Many of their models used it. Decent power, but lots of torque. You can go with an aggressive grind to make up for the slower chain speed. Nice saw! 👍

The old XL are cool saws. They definitely built them to last back then. It’s crazy to think this is more of a homeowner/ranch saw from homelite with magnesium clutch cover and copper oil supply lines.

Back then they made them all the same high quality. I've had old timers say " They'll boil the gas". Which is true if you never open up the starter housing and clean them out. I've bought saws that were completely packed with sawdust inside.

My dad had one similar to yours but with manual oiler throughout the 70s although I don't remember when he bought it. It was the saw I learned on when I was a teen. I remember that it was a real work horse as he cut logs to mill lumber with on his sawmill where I helped him there as well. Lots of memories there. After that saw he got a red Homelite which he used up through the 90s and it was a good saw as well.

I have my handed down 330 and XL12 saws which were both bought in 1980. They both run fine, no problems finding parts through the years because people throw away nice condition Homelite equipment. I use a 50/50 AVgas and 40:1 oil ratio.

I have 2. The blue one was built in May of 1974 and the red one November of 1974. Both have automatic bar oilers and manual oilers. Leon may have the original kit to add the manual oiler. They were an option. Looks like your saw doesn't have one. I use them to block up 6 cords of oak every year. It gets cold here in MN but nice and cozy with the wood stove.
The XL12 was earlier and had a slightly smaller motor. They were manual oiler only. Many of the parts are interchangeable with the Super.
You should get a pair of chainsaw chaps and stand out of line of the bar. I've had one kickback and was lucky, just broke the skin on one leg. I cringed watching your video.

I have run into a few with that bar where you run out of chain adjustment. About all sources call for 70 drive links and that's a hair to long. There's some chains on ebay called saber that are NOS 69 drive links 3/8s, .050 chipper chain that fit on the homelite 20 in. bar perfectly. No more hanging down chains. They are in a yellow, white and red box for a very good price.
