The lighting issue is pretty much on the same level as making legally blind Amanda in cycle 3 walk in a dark venue. They knew about each respective condition and tried to get drama footage out of it.
I have epilepsy. I can’t imagine trying to be a model or actor and have to deal with the constant flashing of lights. I have stopped going to concerts because they have so many strobe lights these days. (I sound old lol “these days”).
It’s sad that people don’t even care to accommodate those with epilepsy. I don’t even have it but man flashing lights give me such a headache & dizziness every time I see them. I couldn’t imagine having epilepsy & being randomly thrown off by them.
Honestly, putting Isabella into that situation upset me far more than Tahlia. The execution was questionable, but I can at least see the point they were trying to make with Tahlia and the challenges she could face in the industry. But there is zero justification for knowingly putting Isabella into a situation that could trigger her epilepsy. There are a lot of dubious moments on the show which I give a pass because it's (in hindsight, at least) obviously trying to be an entertaining TV show before anything else. That was not one of those moments.
I'm watching this episode now, and as soon as I saw the picture I was like... wait a minute... rewinded to double check and ran to the comments to see if anyone noticed hahaha I feel seen now, thanks! 😂❤
exactly! they criticize the girl during panel for her fashion choice but they were literally part of the photoshoot 😭 such hypocrisy I can't with this show
A really simple accommodation that doesn't give an "unfair advantage" for Isabella is to just... turn off the strobes for her walk. They're not adding anything extra to the show. Heck, turn them off for all the models, they're pointless and besides epilepsy (which isn't something to be taken lightly) they can trigger migraines and a lot of other problems. I frequently have trouble with strobes at concerts, they make my eyes hurt and I usually have to put my head down and/or close my eyes during segments of shows that are using them.
I'm sure that, in the application process, they asked about neurodiversities, and how it could affect one's performance, and they might've used that to ruin her chances. I, personally, found that disgusting. I lost a niece to a seizure from a malfunctioning bathroom light, so I was So hurt for her
@@nellrose4699neurodiversity as a term was only just around around then, but it doesn’t mean they wouldn’t know. Epilepsy was very much a known thing, and the thing most people knew about it was blinking lights can cause seizures.
And for Tahlia to feel bad about her skin...? The way this show plays on one's insecurities, as if it's to... Make them stronger, or to break them to eliminate themselves...? U-u-ugh... It's heartbreaking, Especially when hers was from a childhood accident/trauma
This is Why I sat out this Year's Victoria's Secret Show Revival, The Moment it was Announced that Tyra was gonna be in it, I was like "Nope, Not Watching"!!!
My understanding is that when an actual designer is featured for the challenge, they get the final say on who wears what. I suspect there was a dissonance between production - who handles casting - wanting to feature Tahlia (they very much made her scars her defining storyline of the season and regularly chose to not cover them/allow Tahlia to talk about them) and the designer - who controls the outfits - not feeling the same way. Still pretty poor treatment of Tahlia and unfair, but that’s why the show’s handling seemed contradictory. Different people were making those calls. The Isabella stuff is way awful. Production knew she had Epilepsy before that runway show; they weren’t taken by surprise. Either they put the strobe lights there hoping for an incident at her expense (absolutely terrible) or they simply didn’t care enough to make any type of accommodation for basic safety (not any better).
Allison was actually semi-famous before the show as one of the very first Internet memes ,she was known as 'creepychan' a fourchan meme, I only heard about it recently
I had to fast forward through the strobe lights because it will trigger my seizure disorder. I feel bad for Isabella having to walk the runway with the flashing lights. This beautiful lady with should never be made to feel bad about her scars. This show is so problematic.
Ok I don't want to give Tyra any unnecessary credence but I was in Jr High and High School in rural Oklahoma. You would not believe how common it was to be a teen and your goal to not only be a teen mom but also a high school dropout... this was before the Teen Mom show on MTV.
As someone with epilepsy, this is insane and they were begging for a lawsuit. She could have totally had a seizure and then 100% they would have blamed it on her. "You should've said no" etc. This is strictly why I started putting my health first. You have to identify who has your interests in mind and those who care so little that they will risk your health.
I will say, for the girls that would be watching Tyras talk show and top model back in the day, were likely also watching teen girls become famous on Teen Moms, too. And where i grew up, rural small town, girls were taught to get married and have babies asap, teen moms were not unusual here. I wanted to be one, too, and only was lucky it didnt happen when i was 16. I could see Tyra doing a survey-- the respondents were young girls watching reality tv, and back in those days, teen girls were taught very different ideals-- her survey likely would come up with a large number of girls hoping for that.
She actually did blatantly address it SOME DESIGNERS are going to show it, where SOME DESIGNERS are going to hide it because they don’t like the look of scars what more was Tyra supposed to say she gave a black and white straight to the point explanation. This was a designer that didn’t want talea burn scars to show so it was hidden plain and simple. The fashion industry especially then was NOT COOKIE CUTTER, BFF, let’s make everyone happy. And talea got a REAL LIFE INDUSTRY LESSON
I absolutely agree with Tahlia. Tyra CHOSE HER as one of the finalist girls, because she supposedly saw potential in her as a model....that she was BEAUTIFUL. Tyra MUST HAVE KNOWN about her scars before she was chosen. So WHY choose her and give her this honor and then immediately cover her up in layers when ALL the other models are flaunting their beauty? What message is that giving to Tahlia? Or for that matter, ANY woman who has flaws that they feel insecure about? Tahlia has a POWERFUL story. She is a BURN survivor. She could INSPIRE so many others who are also burn survivors or suffer from physical or other handicaps. Instead, Tyra makes a MOCKERY of this poor girl. By covering her scars, Tyra is saying "You are NOT beautiful enough or worthy enough to be respected as a model in my game. We have to hide you." And then she HUMILIATES this poor girl at panel for pointing it out. Shame on Tyra. That is VERY BAD FORM. I actually find it VERY hypocritical and insulting that Tyra tells Sandra to take her scarf OFF because "she is covering her lusciousness" but yet THEY COVERED Tahlia's "lusciousness" on purpose.
And not to be in defense of Tyra, but she is right regarding the industry & Tahlia's burns. The industry at the end of the day are going to do what they feel is going to sell product. There's some designers who book models that may have scars or other conditions such as Vitiligo (shoutout to Winnie Harlow). And then there's designers that will cover it up as much as possible. Thankfully the industry is evolving & moving more towards diversity in all aspects.
What's funny though is teen pregnancy rates went down, not up, thanks to Teen Mom. I know I watched that show and it discouraged me from having kids young. Their lives were miserable.
Isabella was eliminated first. I wonder another factor of elimination is because of due to being a flashing lights photoshoot and she having epilepsy, they wouldn’t want have problems with her?
I'm not epileptic, but I still hate flashing lights. Strobing of any kind, even sunlight through the trees while driving... makes me nauseous. It's only gotten worse with age. I'm in my 40s now and I can't handle it (or shaky cam, for that matter. My personal nightmare!). So many people have issues with strobe lights, I don't know why anyone would want to utilize them during a fashion show. It's such a liability, really!
Did anyone else notice that at 25:55, the earrings in the picture look so much like the ones that Tyra made Amina take off because she didn’t “look like a model?!”
They did Tahlia dirty! Even if they wanted to cover her scars for the runway challenge so they would not distract from the clothing they could have put her in a long-sleeve sheer ankle-length colorful dress that matched the other girls.
And before “teen-mom” was a thing. I can remember girls in my British school in the 80s who wanted, and/or did, drop out of school and become a mum at 15/16/17. For some it was all they thought they were here to do. It wasn’t anything religious either. Girls were often not encouraged to want to do more, or expect more.
The idea of girls growing up too fast and wanting to be adults isn't uncommon, and especially wasn't during this cycle of Top Model back then, Jessica (you have to remember this was still in the early 2010's, so it's not fair to judge it by 2020's vision). It's not right obviously, but it is true. And regarding Tahlia's situation, Tyra DID address it blatantly and clearly. The designer for this fashion show didn't want to flaunt her scars, hence why she was in a different outfit. It could have been done better yes, but still. Unfortunately her scars would've negatively affected her modeling career, ANTM mistreatment or not. The industry nowadays is a bit more inclusive here and there, but even so her having scars would be an immediate turn off for many clients and agencies today, let alone back then. 😕
As someone who has plenty of scars myself, the way they treated Tahlia offends me an insane amount, honestly. If someone has that amount of confidence and self love while having scars, it's really screwed up for others to try and ruin it by pointing out their differences to them and then covering them up so others won't see them. They just wanted her to feel like she should be ashamed of having scars, as if the scars were her fault. Disgusting.
Something tacky from every first photoshoot started from cycle 7 until cycle 15. Cycle 7 = Model stereotype Cycle 8 = Political issue Cycle 9 = Smoking side effect Cycle 10 = Homeless photoshoot Cycle 11 = Voting for election Cycle 12 = Childhood Games with Teen Mom issue Cycle 13 = Childhood photoshoot Cycle 14 = Nude photoshoot with wearing one item from the mannequin Cycle 15 = Teen Bullying
Jessica! At the time, Teen Mom was a huge tv show. It was madly popular and unfortunately did encourage a bunch of kids to make terrible choices 😆 family vloggers of today like JessFam are failed Teen Moms who made a youtube channel because they couldn't go the TV route. This is all too true and I hate it 😅 Tyra might be right about her survey at the time...
There’s a rumor about the purpose of the lights on the runway, and it was to cause some kind of drama and since they didn’t see any effect on the girl, they eliminated her.
You have to remember that this aired when Teen Mom was super popular on MTV, and it did make a lot teen girls want to become teen moms. Now they want to be OF models.
I mean Tyra is right that some people would hire her and make her cover up her scars while others would want to flaunt it But there are better ways they could have done it at the runway show. For instance they could have put her in some skin tone tights or used some makeup
This shoot is awful. "Girls are growing up too fast" so... they infantilise grown women and tell them to look gorgeous. Also the teen mum bashing is awful. I was a teen mum, so was my mym and grandmum... and despite the challenges we've all raised emotionally intelligent, competent, confident and kind kids. Teen parents just need more support initially and encouragement. It's utterly vilified these days, but when my mym and gran were teen mums it was normal...
6:41 i highly doubt she was making that face at her. I bet they edited afterwards to look that way. Because youre absolutely right. Nothing she did warranted that expression.
I'm a burn survivor. It's been almost three years since it happened but I still have to deal with it. It was the worst thing I have ever gone through. I was 22 when it happened so I can't imagine how awful it was for a child. I know if I saw a model with scars like mine, it would make my day. I would love that brand. So yeah that's definitely messed of them
So many thoughts. Honestly Tahlia and Nijah were not dissimilarly dressed, they were both oddly office-chic compared to the others with blazers more coverage on the bottom, but Nijah was at least in the same color scheme. Tahlia's clothing does look thrown together, which makes me wonder if it's actually a sizing snub. Isabella, girl they are sabotaging you and literally trying to k*ll you. They are asking for a lawsuit, and to be honest, are camera flashes really a good idea either? What was up with the lighting on that shoot? How did they decide who got actual daylight and who just got shot in the dark? Have you ever noticed how much they focus on the models looking "clean and like a model" and blank slates during judging and then absolutely mess them up for photo shoots? How are they supposed to know how they're supposed to look "as a model" when you stick giant bows on their heads while modeling?
I just hated how this show expected these girls to be Naomi Campbell right out the gate! Even after watching a few seasons, they gave little to no coaching to them as well. I still don’t even know what the expectations were by the end of this all. 😂😂😂
So to bring some contents in the “teen mom” topic, at this time, there were shows on MTV and other networks showcasing teen moms. While the show was suppose to discourage teen pregnancy, the girls on the shows became quick celebrities and on the cover of magazines and it almost had girls “inspire” to be a teen mom as well.
There’s no way that pant suit was in the designer’s collection. ANTM production picked out something to put Talia in. The least they could have done was pick out something that fit with the rest of the collection. But they chose a basic frumpy pant suit to make her feel/look uncomfortable.
I believe the teen pregnancy's because I'm almost certain this season was when "Teen Moms" was airing and because of that show I know many of the girls in my school who got pregnant and applied for it.
Honestly, it looks like the lights were added post-production. They don’t look like they were a part of the show originally. As I rewatch the series, I can better point out flashes of light that do not appear to originate from the scene. The photo shoot with the baby jaguar is an example. The flash looks fake and added in. In reality, the flash would have aggravated it and made it even more unstable than it turned out to be for the shoot. This runway show, I believe, had lights but I don’t think they were as extreme as what we are seeing right now. ETA: the intensity seems exaggerated. I believe the flashes were there but they look overly done on some angles.
This season came around MTV's peak 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom era, its not surprising some girls wanted to become a "teen mom" to get a shot at becoming famous
Dodgeball in middle school was so tramuatic as in out tiny mussionary school we had to do it with competitive older boys in grades above us. My little sister and i would let the ball touch out legs ans go sit down to avoid in the face shots. Yes they had to tell them not to hit people in the face. I remember one boy in the 9th grade i was in the 5th would get hit. Sit out them come back and hit people again when the P.E teacher was not looking
Absolute L0Lz "Talia, y, your gonna have to be naughty". It sounded like the designer just wanted to get the uncomfortable, upcoming situation over with. But she was all 'cheery' with lsabella.
there were so many pictures of sandra where she was smiling, giggling, animatedly hiding...and they picked this one...? also those strobe lights were horrible as a viewer who doesn't have epilepsy, it must have been horrendous for everyone there
Hi Jessica, I really enjoy your reaction videos, especially since I love revisiting old ANTM episodes. However, I noticed that there are quite a lot of pauses and commentary in between scenes. While your insights are interesting, sometimes it feels like the interruptions take away from the flow of watching the episode. It might help to balance the commentary with more uninterrupted viewing of the scenes. Just a suggestion from a fan who enjoys your content and wants to see it shine even more. Keep up the great work
Wait until the panel because tyra tries to help her understand what to expect with the scars. Im curious if it's good advice or cruel. Because I'm thinking what r people like in real life with clients that make decisions like this.
In earlier seasons of Top Model, the girls would be called out for not wanting to do a photoshoot showing too much skin. Now Tahlia wants to show skin, but they instead put an entire body suit on her? Clearly theres alot more Top Model judges are covering up than scars 🤔
😑 A ghetto black girl = bad girl? Smh! 🙄 Who approved this? And as a black woman, why was Tyra ok with promoting this stereotype? the same thing with the teen mom. A teenager getting pregnant doesn't make her a bad girl.
With all the respect … I found the way you review this show super out of the way that it really was at the moment. I understand if the show was current but it’s not. In that time there wasn’t a lot of pointing issues that now you’re trying to point and blame, we are living in a totally different society now. Also, when you sign to be in a reality tv show you know it will be drama, twist and all that kind of stuff that makes reality tv show “unexpected”.
One thing is creating drama, but taking advantage of someone's health issues is really unhinged
Super unhinged. ):
The lighting issue is pretty much on the same level as making legally blind Amanda in cycle 3 walk in a dark venue. They knew about each respective condition and tried to get drama footage out of it.
Making an epileptic person be around strobe lights is worse though. Siezures can kill you.
This girl literally could have died. 😐

6:41 i highly doubt she was making that face at her. I bet they edited afterwards to look that way. Because youre absolutely right. Nothing she did warranted that expression.
I'm glad Jessica calls out this "girls growing too fast" concept for the garbage it is!
please react to korea's next top model they have eng subs on youtube
Natalie and Celia were my favorites this season. Oh tight, they got cut way at the end. What is Mistress Jay wearing?! Is he Zenon?!
I used to have seizures so the flashing lights I understand how that’s triggering they should of known better not to they could of given her a seizure
The photoshoot is also wierd acting like little girls
There’s no way that pant suit was in the designer’s collection. ANTM production picked out something to put Talia in. The least they could have done was pick out something that fit with the rest of the collection. But they chose a basic frumpy pant suit to make her feel/look uncomfortable.
I've been saying this for years about ANTM trying to trigger her health when people talk about how problematic the show is
Merry Christmas, y'all! 🎄
I believe the teen pregnancy's because I'm almost certain this season was when "Teen Moms" was airing and because of that show I know many of the girls in my school who got pregnant and applied for it.
The strobe lights lady went through that for nothing
12:39 😭 wth is wrong with these people
"You have a very small head" is the highest of compliments in Asia
They're lucky Isabella didn't start seizing during that runway! D:
Dodgeball in middle school was so tramuatic as in out tiny mussionary school we had to do it with competitive older boys in grades above us. My little sister and i would let the ball touch out legs ans go sit down to avoid in the face shots. Yes they had to tell them not to hit people in the face. I remember one boy in the 9th grade i was in the 5th would get hit. Sit out them come back and hit people again when the P.E teacher was not looking
What was everyone's favorite childhood game?
Absolute L0Lz
"Talia, y, your gonna have to be naughty".
It sounded like the designer just wanted to get the uncomfortable, upcoming situation over with. But she was all 'cheery' with lsabella.
there were so many pictures of sandra where she was smiling, giggling, animatedly hiding...and they picked this one...?
also those strobe lights were horrible as a viewer who doesn't have epilepsy, it must have been horrendous for everyone there
This wasn't a good idea for a shoot. Sorry! JMHO
If i have insecurities about my face and my body, can i be your model and feel good about myself?
the runway show had a designer.....
It make no sense to cover Thalia like that during the fashion show, again it's completely rigged ; why does she has to hide her scars ?
Is Thalia doing better now?
Fo actually did get called 2nd in the callout order.
Can you make a reaction video episodes for Asias Next Top Model Cycle 5.
😑 A ghetto black girl = bad girl? Smh! 🙄 Who approved this? And as a black woman, why was Tyra ok with promoting this stereotype? the same thing with the teen mom. A teenager getting pregnant doesn't make her a bad girl.
I don’t remember this season at all but the photo shoot was so creepy
Yeah, I thought I remembered liking this shoot. These pictures came out way too blurry on some.
Are they seriously trying to hurt someone for real? They want someone to have a seizure and then they’re happy?
I leave my house periodically 🤣🤣🤣😭😭
Who got best photo?
Allison.
@keltzy cool. She is such a great model fr
Isabella was robbed
They cover up Thalia, but did they do the same to Winnie Harlow? Because that's double standards! Not that I'm surprised my ANTM but still...
Happy holiday ❤🎉 always love antm series. 🤭🤭🤭
I remember this season, and I LOVED Talia. I was so upset when they got rid of her, she is so beautiful inside and out.
The fact that they choose a weird preteen photoshoot and she's pregnant. Wtf
Jessica, don't ever play me in dodgeball. I'm too competitive. Lol
13:49 still have her covered head to toe, and she's the only one.
