Egg Tan A Sheepskin - Learning from YouTube university

Went to slaughter a sheep & decided to tan the sheepskin. Else the farmer just throw away the skin. I can't bear to see these beautiful skins rot. Things RUclips university did not tell you / did not emphasize enough:
1. Fleshing is a bear. By day 3, I almost quit
2. By day 2, if the fat & the flesh are still on the skin, it starts to smell to high heavens
3. This project requires a lot of perseverance
4. The farmer said, mature sheepskin should be used else the wool will come off in due time. Mature sheep have a black face
This video is only about 7 mins long, but this project actually took me about a month to complete.

BRILLIANT, many thanks for a concise video. There are lots of videos on RUclips, none are as straightforward and easy to follow as this, so well done. Also for your informative comments.
I am mixing my egg yokes right now! 2 thoughts - soaking in alum (aluminium sulphate) might help the skin to tighten on the wool fleece, which could be useful in younger sheep. Also fleshing with a jet wash/pressure hose, with the skin pinned onto a flat board seemed to work for me.
I am only on my first 2 sheepskins, so still experimenting. Loved your video.
PS, also loved the bookshop. Have you tried ‘The Jungle is Neutral’, F Spencer Chapman. A great read.

Thank you for your kind words. In aTikTok world today, I tried my best to make my videos as short as possible. I was not able to get my hands on Alum in time last time, next time (if ever) I will definitely use Alum.
PS: The vintage book section in the store was a treasure trove. All for USD $3.50 each! What a bargain.

I live in Ireland and have found it hard to get Alum powder so I used a salt and white vinegar bath. It’s worked really well. I too used a power washer which made life soo much easier. 👍

I have a question: I did a method where a sheepskin is soaked in a brine of salt and alum for a week. This time around, one of the sheepskin's smells funky after the week of brining. There's no meat attached or anything. I think I just didn't clean the wool well enough. So my question is can I just scrub it with detergent to get it clean and then do the egg yolk step? Or will that undo the brining? If I scrub it, do I need to re-brine it? I'm not sure about this scenario and want to avoid wrecking the sheepskin (it's beautiful black wool). But it's also too smelly to use for anything. If you have advice on how to get rid of the smell, I'm all ears. Thanks!

yes, mine really stinks after a few days. I rinsed it well before the egg yolk, after the egg yolk, i washed it with detergent and softener and it was fine. I suppose, you can always change the brine regularly.
