He scored SOME victories at least. 1) He fared better than Vegeta 2) He convinced Cell to not destroy the planet right away 3) He got to kill the androids and Cell in his timeline.
At least his spine is still intact. Also, Trunks in DBZ deserved a lot more love imo. This fight (plus vs SPC during the entire 18 hunt too), him vs Freeza and King Cold, and Vegeta vs 18 (where he charged in) was probably the only things worth of him that came out of it. The Cell Games kinda just put him as a side character like Tien and Krillin (though lets be honest, Trunk's death was honestly the best fucking thing with Vegeta's reaction), and outside of that he really didnt do too much.

As epic as this music is i would like to point out that this fight could have been avoided if cell had been prevented from reaching his perfect form by goku grabbing 18 when he saved Tien and Picalo
