Harley is such a great character that now just seems to be all about tiny clothes and being silly and hot, when she is indeed a smart woman with huge manipulative skills that lived trough an abusive relationship she sometimes falls back into.
+luigi she could and she would be awesome. but at best she looks cunning. like they can't manage a woman who is not only badass and sexy but also smart even if her bubbly personality wont always show it.
Just for the record, when I said that Arleen Sorkin voiced Harley Quinn for decades, I didn't mean she was the ONLY one to voice her. Of course Tara Strong has voiced Harley in many cartoons, games, and I believe even the live-action cameo on Arrow, but Sorkin has also been there portraying Harley as well!
ok do u think strong would have been a better casting choice the margot robbie i mean shes around harleys age she blond her voice is perfect robbie doesnt even do a voice also do u think the new 52 was the right choice for the suicide squad & harley personally i think they should have gone with assault on arkham for the costumes and everything like how bats v sups went with injustice let me know what u think
Darryl Jack Nah Tara strong for me sounded annoying as Harley like some little girl instead of a grown woman Hyden Welch voices her way better, Assault on Arkham was based on the rebooted version of the Suicide Squad, Batman V Superman was based of the Dark Knight Returns not Injustice.
True I forgot to mention the darknight returns but it did have injustice in and idk I just wish Robbie would try to do a new York type voice and the captain boomerang is anoying he looks like a drunk in the movie but I'm use to seeing him together a little but more
I kind of wish she stayed in her original costume, I don't really like her new costumes. She just doesn't really feel like a jester anymore, more like a female Deadpool.
+creshiell She would also have to change her name since Joker gave her the "Harley Quinn" persona if she wants to completely separate herself from him. If Dick Grayson can step away from Batman's shadow by becoming Nightwing, why can't Harley?
+RectonPunch because Harley's damage goes far deeper than nightwing and batman hers is well it's psychological damage, jokers bad for her, she knows he's bad for her but she can't get away, it's abuse and unless you have ever been in a abusive relationship of a similar caliber it's very difficult to understand she's trying to peel herself away but there are still echoes and bruises stuff she's had for so long she doesn't know how to live without
+DeKuTree I agree with her not being able to really escape her past. It's part of the character and her being away from Joker just won't happen. The relationship is abusive but what I think people refuse to acknowledge is that the relationship is mutually abusive and both abuse one another quite frequently. It isn't healthy and Harley is arguably just as bad as Joker when it comes to their crimes and other activities. She's a willing participant of the abusive relationship. Joker did not force her to be anything. Harley Quinn is who she is. I just think Harley is an easier character to sympathize with and people are convinced she can escape The Joker when in reality Joker is what helped define her and make her who she is.
Wow, Harley didn't appear in the main DC universe until around the same time Cassandra Cain (who you should totally do an episode about) first appeared? That's kinda crazy.
I love her to bits. Yeah she's a bit more revealing and sometimes a bit more crazy at times. But as far as I can tell, she mostly flaunts her sexyness. She's not a total stereotype bombshell. She still has class, humanity, and morals. She does use her sexyness to her advantage however for personal gain, like convincing the teacher to give her a better grade so she could pass. In the suicide squad film, she was just as crazy and zany. Just because she wears different outfits that are more revealing, and changed her color scheme to red and blue instead of red and black, doesn't mean she isn't Harley Like, seriously guys, chill out. Characters change and grow for better or worse. I won't lie though, certain versions do bother me, but not every single one. Harley Quinn is wonderful and very lovable.
most People forget that on of Harley Quinn's First LIVE ACTION appereances was on the WB Show "BIRDS OF PREY" she even wore a version of the costume in the finale
at least that version made her realize the joker was an abusive prick and we see her give his alabaster ass a good whupping in issue 24, honestly given how the Jay leto joker looks like he might be the most over the top but outright violent and dangerous version of the joker (think the Brian Azzerello joker novel joker) I hope they base harley off her new 52 version if only because I think she's better on her own without that killer clown constantly abusing and hurting her: ( I can forgive her trying to be DC's deadpool of iT means she's nobody's punching bag anymore
Harley had always known the Joker was abusive, she wasn't blind to it. She was a willing participant in the abuse and gladly returned it to the Joker. They have a toxic relationship but they both knew it for what it was and they happily went around manipulating and trying to kill each other. Harley doesn't want someone who isn't the Joker, there was a comic in which the Joker was temporarily cured of his "insanity" and because of this he was romancing Harley and treating her "right" and she couldn't stand it! She loves the Joker for what he is. Harley Quinn is not a victim don't treat her like one. These characters are villains they kill people for fun so it isn't all too surprising that their relationship is mutually abusive. The new 52 didn't make Harley more aware of her abusive relationship she's always been aware and she likes it that way. Harley isn't necessarily better without the Joker because she doesn't really make sense without him.
Becks Gealtachta in usse 24 she beat the loving hell out of him and bit his lip off, telling him to stay as far away from her and he didn't she'd kill him...honestly i like that she did that and i hope SS doesn't regress her back into the role of the relationship they had before.
New 52 shouldn't be your source material when it comes to the Joker and Harley's relationship because they're writing her as a victim which she is not and never has been. Just because she's in that relationship with the Joker doesn't mean she isn't strong and independent she is all of those things and more. Her current solo series is a rip off and severely dumbed down version of her original solo series from the early 2000's. New 52 has removed all of the elements that made Harley unique and popular in the first place and only focuses on one aspect of her character. As someone who has been in toxic and abusive relationships I was able to relate to Harley and connect with her character very deeply. But now what they are doing with her is just a slap to the face. If DC wanted a character that was struggling to overcome an abusive relationship and be an anti hero then they should have made a new character; instead of drastically altering a once amazingly complex character to the point that it is no longer the same character.
I always thought Harley was a really popular character, I never got the impression she was less so? But I guess the Batman game solidified her, so that's cool I guess. She was most likely a lot of people's fanboy crush, too. Lawl
I'm a big fan of Harley myself., as well as other heroines/villainess' like Wonder Woman., Batgirl., Catwoman., X-23., Poison Ivy., Gwenpool.,(even though she like a Marvel Comics ripoff of Harley Quinn)., Psylocke., Anya Corazon., (aka Arana/Spider-Girl)., Silk., Cassandra Cain., Stephanie Brown., Lady Bullseye., Black Cat., Typhoid Mary., Batwoman., Power Girl., Elektra., Spider-Woman., Stargirl., (Stars and Stripes comic)., Spider Gwen., She-Hulk., Wasp (Avengers EMH version)., AC Comics' Femforce., Wonder-Girl(Donna Troy., & Cassie Sandmark)., Black Canary & Speedy(the female version)., and of course., Supergirl., also the current Ms Marvel Kamala Khan.,,.
Harley from the Injustice Comics is definitely my favorite version. Specifically because of her banter with Oliver and Lobo in annual #1. "Canary, Queen and Quinn"
DCAU for life. The people who worked on those shows churned out some of the most prolific material that's STILL influencing new stuff being made today. It's mind boggling!
Personally I actually hate Suicide Squad. It has completely ruined every character. Especially Harley.. First of all, Harley is short for Harlequin. Google Harlequin and it will say something to do with a mime.. Now even though Harley doesnt completely represent a mine, she does follow by the description of.. Jester, usually wearing geometrical shapes. Her diamonds. The meaning for her clothes was that she would be Jokers puppet, she loved him.. and he abused her. And for some people that was an amazing love story for.. Two serial killers. Now this new Suicide squad has done its best to change every little bit about Harley as possible.. Right down to her backstory. Harley was the cutre character.. She was the only female villain that wasnt fully known for her flirty personality and amazing body. In short, back then Harley wasnt a slut. Now all the fan art and clips of her and just her posing or blowing gum.. Or at a strip club. Harley isnt a hoe.. She wears a simple, but awesome Jester costume. I hate the fact that 90 percent of "Halrey Quinn fans" dont even recognize or know her backstory properly just because the Suicide squad has completely ruined and trashed it. Why did you hgave to change the story?! Harley wouldnt sit in prison waiting for Joker to resue her.. Twice. Joker wouldnt go to full lenths to do that. And he wouldnt have to, as the real Halrey can take care of herself.
Absolutely love Harley Quinn. She is most def a QUEEN.I would definitely love to know more of her backstory. I would love to see more origin stories of the black female comic characters ie: Nubia(wonder woman's twin sister stolen by God Aries,or Mars), Or the OG Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau,Vixen,Misty knight,Karen Beecher a.k.a Bumblebee. I'm just throwing out a few to getcha started. Great vid, awesome content. Keep up the great work.
The best characters always start in TV shows :) X-23 is one of my favorite characters in Marvel,I loved her character before but Tom Taylor's current run is making her share my number 1 spot with Bucky and Spider-Woman,and Harley Quinn is definitely in the top 5 for DC.
JG R An episode on would clones be legal in the real world xD As in can they get a passport or Identification papers since they are essentially a gender bent/younger version of the original person. (a.k.a I'm sleepy so this makes sense to me now,but I bet that when I wake up this is going to seem like a weird idea)
It seems like there might be a connection between her rising popularity and her recent lack of clothing. She didn't really get much attention until her costumes became more revealing. Arkham Asylum is a good example of that.
+Nova1080 Its a vicious circle, she got popular after they took off her clothers, and since she becamse so popular they tpok off more clothes wich made her even more popular
+itsinmyvein But when its harleys first time in a live action movie and you supposedly add "daddy's little monster" on her t shirt for one of her costumes and the character herself has a scene where she balls up the classic suit and throws it on the ground in exchange for the "shorts", then you know that somethings wrong and is counted as unworthy.
I'll admit that I'm being petty/picky, but I'm seriously disappointed that Harley Quinn doesn't have her gun maul accent in the movie. I'm sure Margot Robbie has done a great job portraying her, and I respect that the accent may not have fit the director's vision for the character, but an accent-less Harley just ain't for me. Anyone else disappointed, or is it just me?
The version of Harley that has always held a special place in my heart is from the animated series called "The Batman." A slightly altered version of her backstory with her being a tv love therapist that tanks after she insulted Bruce Wayne. Joker, who was a loyal fan to the show, swoops in and saves her from her funk and shows her a fun night on the town filled with mayhem and destruction. When encountering Batman she embraces her new role as Harley Quinn and with a swish of her long belled hat she defends her Puddin with everything she's got. She's always been my favorite super villain and I'll always find that version of her to be my all time favorite.
Classic harley is perfect. No other harley can beat her. Not even the suicide squad version because in the classic she is actually is a clown and she ACTUALLY sticks to her given namesake. Shes named after Harlequin the clown so why not be a clown? "Harley's story is about her relationships - not just with [Joker], but finding herself and her independence" - Margot Robbie.... Excuse you margot... so you mean that by finding herself and her independence she has to sleep with other guys, wear less clothing like the whole "daddy's little monster" t shirt costume (which is completely not sexual am i right?), misuse her namesake and be referred to as a feminist? (not every female comic book character should be labeled as a feminist.) Nah i dont think so Margot and the New 52, you got it all wrong... For harleys first time in a live action movie; why can we try something like with Jack Nicholsons joker (classic dapper) and then move/d on to something a bit new with heath ledgers joker (dark, edgy and dapper)? So harley can get some actual recognition with out being labeled as a slut or a whore "*whorley quinn*"! Come on DC where is the clown jestress that we all know and love? Stop trying to turn her into something else.
+Pam Gray I cant becuase the film is alread out and made. Im just stating facts about why this harley isnt really harley. But its not going to stop me from watching the movie.
+Pam Gray Awe thankyou. Sadly i wont be seeing the movie for a while becuase ill be going camping this weekend. Lol im stil going to give the movie a shot!
The introduction of Harley Quinn was a wonderful accident that made the Animated series much more entertaining. And they used Harley in many episodes (to their credit). The voice acting was so over the top it was brilliant. Perfect character to play off of Mr. J
I hate how some people say they love Harley when they're talking about the suicide squad Harley, cause it's like, that's not even the real harley that we've come to know and love, I mean, they changed two of the biggest things that make Harley Harley, her color combo and her accent. I know that when I think of Harley Quinn, the first thing that comes to mind is her accent. If I offended anyone, I am very sorry, but I just wanted to put out how I feel about Harley. peace and joy and also luck, BYEEE! :-)
Thanks for running through her rise to fame-I wasn't aware of about half of that. Harley is one of my favorite characters when she's written correctly, which to be fair, is more often than not from what I have seen (leaving aside that whole campaign and contest to kill her off). I love pretty much any story where she gets to be a tragic but fun character who gets to do her own thing but is forever tied to the Joker, whether she wants to be or not (which tends to flip-flop). I don't like any story where she's basically just a henchman who gets psychologically and physically abused constantly. Yes, her mind was warped by the Joker into Harley Quinn in the first place, and I really like that origin-I think it fits best. But that doesn't mean I want to see her crying and beaten half of the time she's seen. The tragedy should be there, but it should be in their twisted relationship and occasional fear of his anger when plans fail (like all of the people that work with him fear), but not a constant abuse story. Also, I didn't like the Suicide Squad animated movie for many reasons, but Harleys portrayal most of all. It wasn't one thing but a series of things. (SPOILERS FOR HER CHARACTER IN THAT ANIMATED MOVIE) She was smart enough to get through Arkham and appease the Joker, yet she acted like an airhead throughout the rest of it (inconsistency), She was more sex-oriented than flirty (which I can see her being sex-oriented in certain scenarios, but it would breed from her flirtatiousness and her aptness for being a hopeless romantic and not hit so suddenly), and she grabbed her hammer, which was most certainly fine, but ignored the other really useful gadgets from other incarcerated people and didn't even look for a Joker box, which she would have loved to take with her because she knows how to use his gadgets and wanted to get back at him in that movie. All in all, she was a caricature of her own already extreme character, and an inconsistent one, at that. (END SPOILERS FOR THE ANIMATED MOVIE) As for the new movie, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hoping for good things despite how little they show of her (every scene was showing that she's fun loving, flexible, or flirtatious, which is fine, but we didn't see much of her actual role...which is preferred over the trailer giving me the whole story). I approve, but its still a fact that I can't judge from that. All in all, I love Harley Quinn and the Joker, and I think the two make for a fun and twisted time apart, and even more so when they're with each other.
I just don't like the version of Harley that was created by the Joker. It takes away her agency and makes her a thing. She isn't a complicated person with complicated reasons for her turn to crime and evolution into something else after her criminal career.
1st Thank goodness you finally brought up the point that Joker came to be after falling into a vat of chemicals at Ace Chemicals. One of the reasons I liked the game Arkham Origins was that after Batman captures The Joker ( I've always liked the fact that he is referred to as The Joker more often than Joker with an over emphasis on The ) he is brought in to be analyzed by Dr. Quinzel. During said analysis we get to see The Joker as a failed stand-up comic ( where you suddenly realize you have to fight!) and the Red Hood eventually falling into the chemicals. THAT is the real Joker, not someone whose mouth was cut and wears make-up as Heath Ledger in that movie. I can't tell you how many fans were both disappointed and upset about that. 2nd thanks for finally giving us the answer to " How did Quinn get her physical prowess?" I've loved watching her in all the Arkham games. From Asylum with the hilarious one punch defeat by the Bat. Up to Knight where we actually get to play Harley where she is literally talking to herself and has an awesome arsenal of moves and weapons. Quinn, just as with the Joker, is perfect in the games. Unfortunately, she is mishandled in the movies just as the Joker has been in EVERY film. Oh yeah, about all the hoopla/buzz surrounding Suicide Squad. Not all of it was good. If it was, the film wouldn't have have had to be reedited and the release date pushed back. Then there's Leto, the worst Joker ever...except for Jack. I don't think there will ever be anything worse than Jack's FAT Joker.
Back in the 1970s, in one of the "100-Pages" editions of "Justice League Of America", there was a reprinted story from "All Star Comics" from 1944 (I think), about the Justice Society taking on the Injustice Society, made up of a collection of supervillains, like The Icicle, and The Fiddler (a Flash villain). They were trying to steal various patriotic symbols, like the Liberty Bell, which was being transported on "The Liberty Train". A female villain character named Harlequin was caught up in all the action. Black Canary also appeared in the story, and eventually joined the Justice Society at the end of the story. Perhaps you can discuss the history of this "Golden Age" Harlequin in one of your video presentations. It would be very informative for your younger viewers.
I just found out from a video here on RUclips, that the Golden Age Harlequin was an enemy of the Golden Age Green Lantern. There is a video here on RUclips, showing panels from "Green Lantern" Number 31. And there are probably more appearances of her in "All American Comics" as well.
Yes, she was certainly an interesting character, but a completely different one, of course. I would love to see him do more episodes on Golden and Silver Age stories and characters. One episode I *really* want him to focus on in depth if he does go back to those eras is the swapping and sharing of certain characters between Marvel, DC (and pre-DC), and occasionally other comic companies. Its something I'm fascinated in, but admittedly have little knowledge about. I do know that, unless they changed it and I didn't catch that, Steven Strange can canonically switch between the two "and other universes" at will (though for obvious reasons he doesn't do so often).
Basically, the Golden Age Harlequin was Green Lantern's Joker and Catwoman combined. She was his forbidden love interest. Her sole reason becoming a crook was to keep GL interested in her (and he always "allowed" her to escape). Ironically, as Molly Mayne she was Alan Scott's secretary and they clashed repeatedly without either recognizing the other in their costumed identities. In the 1980's DC retconned it so that Molly had his secret figured out years ago, which paved the way for them to finally marry.
"My fault. I didn't get the joke" this line sends shivers down my spine. It was in the episode mad love and it's freakin fantastic. Showing joker and Harley's relationship as an allegory of very real abusive relationships (relationships I have some unfortunate familiarity with).......in a cartoon about a man in a bat costume beating up evil clowns. It's a good episode is what I'm saying
I love the classic Harley Quinn from her own comic books, when she was best friend with her employee of the month (which was mentioned once in the Suicide Squad - Assault on Arkham cartoon), when she fled out of hell or later, with her new boyfriend Jimmy Olsen.
I love every version of Harley that I've experienced. With either Sorkin or Strong voicing her; the animated, comic, or video game versions, I love the character. I'm hoping the Suicide Squad movie and Margot Robbie can do her justice. I feel like they've nailed the look to go with their other redesigned villains, now to find out if the writing and acting are up to snuff.
To me, Harley Quinn is a great character, but she was just so uninspiring in those Arkham games. Batman, Joker, and Freeze get all the good writing and Harley just gets a trampy costume and nothing to do but whine and be defeated by Batman.
My preference go to classique Harley with the jester costume (love the visual, it's less generic than the new 52 biker chick costume). She's better as a goofy, unhinged character with a big heart and an hidden brain. Free chaos more than real Evil. One thing that is missing from the recap might be the serum Ivy inject her with that makes Harley more durable, imune to poisons and stronger. It's a detail often left out that were added when she appear in the comics. I always found it gave her a "cartoon-like" way of bouncing back after strikes.
Eh if I recall it right, her most up to date origin is her acting as an inmate to get better research opportunities. She then fell in love with Joker and was locked up as a real inmate, proceeding to kill everyone with Joker and becoming Harley Quinn. Later killing many people while looking for Joker, which led to Black Canary arresting her. She was then tortured to test if she's good enough for the Suicide Squad/Task Force X and eventually became the first member to ever escape the squad and be the one who made the plans and helped her teammates escape once again. Harley Quinn also developed a relationship with Deadshot.
I love the old costume the best so far, but I think her character is a perfect one to experiment with. I think we should get off of the mindset of her last few costumes, but I honestly want them to experiment with a lot of different costumes for a while. That in itself fits with her character, I think.
In her new series, Palmiotti & Conner (& Hardin & Timms) periodically change up her look. She always has the black and red motif, but she wears slacks, less revealing tops, and in one issue a bowling uniform. There's also the second Valentine's Day Special where she wore an elegant blue gown to bid at a charity auction for a date with Bruce Wayne.
Frank Mitchell That sounds pretty cool! Is the writing any good? (Also, I'm very curious how she got into the charity auction. Her identity isn't exactly a secret.)
It's all by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, so the writing is pretty good. I enjoy it, anyway. As for how she gets around without getting arrested, no idea. Maybe she's still declared legally sane (and not responsible for past crimes). Maybe New York cops in her universe are that lazy and/or corrupt. (Plus, she's white. Really white.) Maybe she dwells in a Johnny the Homicidal Maniac zone where nothing she does comes back on her (well, until the last few issues).
I loved No Man's Land when I was a kid, it came out when I was 9, I read all of them and loved the Harley bits (not Joker beating her, but I loved her in general).
i agree, i like harley's character but at times i wish theyd made her a little bit less of a bimbo... just saying she comes across as that when she's so obsessed and willing to do anything for the joker who treats her like crap. itd be nice if they made her a little bit more independent/smarter.
In all honesty, hints at Joker having a suitress were already there in the Batman TV series of the '60s, fon an instance there was Baby Jane in Pop goes the Joker/Flop goes the Joker, all throughout the episodes you'll find many parallels with Harley Quinn.
+JJPivotz Tara also voiced harley in injustice gods among us, and I THINK a few dc animated movies...not assault on arkham that IK wasn't her...Ik soykien was Harleys original voice and inspiration, but imo I feel that like twilight sparkle, harley Quinn was the role Tara was born to play, hell I really wish she'd be playing harley in live action in the suicide squad movie but it's too late...though she is trying to get a live action cameo in a solo Harley movie made after SS
A great episode about a great character. Though a small side note, as much as Arleen deserves the credit for voicing and inspiring Harley's creation, she has since retired the role to Tara Strong, an unbelievably talented voice actress who despite very having played many UNHarley sounding voice roles, is in my opinion nearly identical to Arleen's performance. Honestly, she deserves as much credit for continuing Harley's legacy in DC's extended media.
There's also the Gotham Sirens series, and she also had a comic with Zatana, I think it was called " Harley's Big Book Of Magic ". And Harley Quinn was in the Suicide Comics before new52, ( ex: Suicide Squad Walled In ).
Very interesting! However, about Harley’s voice... I don’t think Sorkin is doing an over-the-top version of her own voice. Rather, it’s an impression of actress Judy Holliday from the 1950 movie “Born Yesterday.” Holliday won an Oscar for her performance as a “dumb blonde” who gets an education. Her distinctive voice and accent were widely imitated back in The Day. Sorkin appears very briefly in the 1991 movie “Oscar,” where she plays gangster’s manicurist. She has one line. If you close your eyes, it sounds just like Harley Quinn.
Arkham City and Arkham Knight Harley is probably the best represented version of her. She loses Joker and goes through hell to try to get Batman to pay for his death, then finds hope with the 4 Joker copies only to have them all die because Batman is the 5th one and has the strongest Joker in him. She loses her Puddin' twice and refuses to believe that he's stuck inside Batman. Also, the alternate ending of Arkham City adds even more to it when she's singing to a baby which is assumed hers. Oh, and another Harley worth mentioning is the Robot Chicken DC special one. Fucking 10/10.
Mad love was a pretty cool trade paper back. I still have it somewhere. In her first series with Kessel and Dodson, I didn't like how she hoe'd herself out for grades though, but it is what it is.
I like the modern Harley. The old Harley, it just seems like they make her look too stupid and useless when in fact she's really smart and could really kick some ass like in the new 52 series. She's the only real reason why I even read DC.
Tara Strong has been Harley's voice quite frequently as well. the Arkham game sequels, an episode of Arrow, the lego batman games, Injustice: Gods Among us. She is the second best Harley voice after Arleen.
No problem with Harley, but just thinking about the barrage of dumb pictures with Harley's face and some dumb phrase she never said made by 15 yer old girls is already giving me cringes
I remember her first appearance on TV way back in the 90's. I thought she was pretty cool. I'm glad she took off and became popular, she really is a very intriguing character.
I found this seriously interesting! I have always had a soft spot for Harley ever since growing up with her antics with "Mister J" in the animated series. My favourite version of her indeed. I have to say though I really liked the Arkham games version, although when many traits are the same as the animated one, I am not surprised I enjoy it ha. Suicide Squad itself is not a film I am raring to go see, but I have seen nothing but good things about it, so hey it wouldn't it puddin'! Dave J (Comments Guy)
I find it comical that she didn't become popular until she was wearing less clothing that reveal more of her. I love her as a character when she first appeared I. Her jester outfit.
I am not sure where you got your information on the characters inspiration but the character is actually based on the comedienne Gracie Allen from the comedy duo Burns and Allen. The reason she was added to the series is that Joker needed a partner to set-up jokes and allow him to have exposition dialogue and it would be off to have him treating henchmen as equals. There are plenty of Burns and Allen videos on youtube so I suggest reviewing them. Also, many years ago Mark Hamill gave an interview where he explains the origin of Harley Quinn and walks the viewer through the creation steps of the character. Much of the info you are spouting is set after the creation after some lesser writers got a chance to write the character.
I _sooo_ love Harley Quinn. And I totally love her name too. It's so cute! I like her first iteration the best, with the full court jester outfit. She's also the most interesting character to me in the Suicide Squad. I wish there would be a show or movie based on her relationship with Poison Ivy.
Everyone likes the original Harley from the Animated Series. I like the costumes that she wore in Arkham City and Knight along with the Insurgent look (the Punk ass version) in Injustice Gods Among Us
I like the character and have never really been surprised by her popularity as "Mad Love" is a great book to introduce people to comics and I've met a fair amount who started with that book because of the tv show. I do think it wrong that many see her as a role model though
Actually that's the other way around. Harley was created for the BATMAN TAS show. That episode was adapted into the comic a number of years later. (Yes, I either heard him wrong or he corrected himself later in the episode. Moving on.) Harley Quinn is one of the most commonly listed Comic characters of those created for the TV before the comic. Also to get Harley away from her "battered wife" semblance, her relationship with the Joker produced, she was altered to basically become a DC's version of Deadpool, at least in temperament. But the differences in that temperament vary widely. Where the Joker and Deadpool are considered "super sane", being the only characters who are believed to actually be aware they are comic book characters, Harley Quinn is a "strong" woman who doesn't give a flip or is borderline insane. Not actually as she can apparently turn it on or off and change the intensity of that insanity depending on her mood and/or situation. Gwenpool? MARVEL's version of Harley Quinn but closer to Deadpool than DC'S current version of Harley Quinn. As so she is from an alternate dimension that knows the entire MARVEL Universe as comics, and she was a huge fan, and so knows nearly everything about them and what to do. She has no powers, just knowledge and very slowly waning euphoria about getting to live in her favorite universe and the realities of it, and the fact it is steadily changing, catches up to her. Like her or not, Gwenpool does have ONE thing on Harley Quinn right now: Gwenpool is actually cute, if a bit "jailbaity". Harley used to be cute when she worn that fool body clown suit. Now? A bit slutty and getting worse, as time goes on.
My favorite version of Harley was when she had a tv show about love. It was a pretty creative idea. Especially since joker was a fan of her show and took her out on a knight of terrorizing Gotham
and the fact Arleen (full name: Arleen Sorkin, the very first voice actress for the character) sounds like Harleen (Quinzel) aka Harley Quinn.... whoa...😊😊👍👍🃏🃏
Looking forward to her new animated series. Harley has been one of my favourite female comic book characters since her original introduction in Batman:TAS
i've seen alot of complaints about the redesigns of Harley but I always felt there was a certian charm they had that I'd like to see reworked into her old design, The died twin pigtails, Particularly her Black and Red variant, the only problem I had with the original harley design was the hat but the pigtails fix that problem whle sticking pretty close to that form.
The moment Harley premiered on Batman: The Series, I was hooked. She was just so ballsy, quirky, intriguing and fun. Although, I never followed up on her after the show. We'll see what Suicide Squad delivers.
You forgot a few appearances like birds of arkham, though out of all the appearances I prefer new 52 due to one of the issues finally resolving the decades old relationship with the joker. But I will say out of all the animated and videogame tie ins I will have to say Tara strong did an excellent job voicing Harley.
When he said it would be weird for Joker to jump out of the cake I was like... "That's exactly why the Joker would do it. It wouldn't be as funny if a woman did it." Glad the creators agreed with me.
Cool! When I first saw the Movie Trailers for Suicide Squad... I was like; "I don't like Harleys Look!!." Then I was at a Local Mall and there was some Batman Figures. One was a 5-6 Figurine Set... It had a BADASS Harley Quinn!! (I forgot the Artists Name. Tom/Tim?.) But it was like... THIS ARTIST HAS THE SAME MIND AS ME!!. I wanted Harley to have Black or Red Hair... And that "Arkham Nights" Set is AMAZING!!. I want to see Suicide Squad... But it's DANG Hot out TODAY. I might see it on Tuesday... But will be there as soon as the Theatre opens to buy My Ticket! So I don't see "Sold Out" Under the Movie Title. (It happened to Me & My Friend for "The Secret Life Of Pets" Movie.).
Harley Quinn was pretty popular in the 90s. But then, every geek I knew watched the cartoon and read the comics. They loved her. I'm honestly surprised to hear her described as "unpopular;" but it makes sense, hearing that the comics were not that interesting.
And then Timm and Dini strike gold again by creating the character Terry McGinnis, AKA Batman Beyond. With a little thought and creativity, even a cartoon character can end up influencing the source material. They could do no wrong in that regard. Lockdown, you say? What're you even talking about?
back in the 70's when DC briefly revived the teen titans in their own title there was a character named the joker's daughter who also went by the name harlequin. there was also a golden age dc character named harlequin.
wikipdeia : "Harlequin is the name of four clown-themed DC Comics characters. The original Harlequin was a foe of the Golden Age Green Lantern, and later became his wife. The second Harlequin originally debuted as the Joker's Daughter, and was a member of the Teen Titans. The third Harlequin was a member of the Injustice Unlimited super-villain team, and battled Infinity, Inc. The fourth Harlequin has only appeared on a few occasions, and is an enemy of Alan Scott. The Harlequin was ranked 100th in Comics Buyer's Guide's "100 Sexiest Women in Comics" list, although this list does not specify which version of the character was chosen "
Harley is such a great character that now just seems to be all about tiny clothes and being silly and hot, when she is indeed a smart woman with huge manipulative skills that lived trough an abusive relationship she sometimes falls back into.
The thing about her and that is that she could be hot and smart at the same time.....I mean, she's a super villain, she doesn't give two craps.
+luigi she could and she would be awesome. but at best she looks cunning. like they can't manage a woman who is not only badass and sexy but also smart even if her bubbly personality wont always show it.
I think shed use the tiny clothes FOR manipulating men, but that's just my opinion.
it's not the 90 its 2016 welcome to the new Harley and joker you better like look up new muice 😄
Gamercat 2710101
Muice?
Hope ya like the video, Puddin!
Definitely
lol pudin
are you exited for the Harley movie
I am! But first I want to see how Suicide Squad turns out!
***** omgggggg you awnser me I'm so happy yyyyyy
Just for the record, when I said that Arleen Sorkin voiced Harley Quinn for decades, I didn't mean she was the ONLY one to voice her. Of course Tara Strong has voiced Harley in many cartoons, games, and I believe even the live-action cameo on Arrow, but Sorkin has also been there portraying Harley as well!
If you need to explain that, then your subscribers are in serious trouble, and need real help.
Why no mention oh Harleys appearance in _The Batman_ TV show I know she didn't appear until the later seasons but she still was there.
ok do u think strong would have been a better casting choice the margot robbie i mean shes around harleys age she blond her voice is perfect robbie doesnt even do a voice also do u think the new 52 was the right choice for the suicide squad & harley personally i think they should have gone with assault on arkham for the costumes and everything like how bats v sups went with injustice let me know what u think
She just doesn't really feel like a jester anymore, more like a female Deadpool.
i feel like moving out of the jester costume is just another way of separating her from the joker and making her her own person
+
+
Harley Quinn is wonderful and very lovable.
i totally agree. however when joker pushed her into the chemicals her hair actually turned blue and red.
I like Harley when she does her own thing rather than being with the Joker
Yeah, she can be a really fun independent character!
I prefer it when she is with joker
most People forget that on of Harley Quinn's First LIVE ACTION appereances was on the WB Show "BIRDS OF PREY" she even wore a version of the costume in the finale
I was going to post about the same thing! I'm surprised @nerdsync missed that.
I really hate the more recent "Harleypool" version of the character. Recent interpretations go against core elements of the character, in my opinion.
It's because deadpool is sooooooooooo popular
at least that version made her realize the joker was an abusive prick and we see her give his alabaster ass a good whupping in issue 24, honestly given how the Jay leto joker looks like he might be the most over the top but outright violent and dangerous version of the joker (think the Brian Azzerello joker novel joker) I hope they base harley off her new 52 version if only because I think she's better on her own without that killer clown constantly abusing and hurting her: ( I can forgive her trying to be DC's deadpool of iT means she's nobody's punching bag anymore
I've been a fan of Harley since she first showed up in the Batman cartoon.
Honestly, Harley was my first fanboy crush.
that's honestly pretty gay mate
🙂 too bad, I'm reserved for Mr.J
+Harleen Quinzel You have apple emojis, gurl you got that IPhone 6s?!
Harley from the Injustice Comics is definitely my favorite version. Specifically because of her banter with Oliver and Lobo in annual #1. "Canary, Queen and Quinn"
Most of my favourite versions of characters are from injustice
I can see that. Especially with New52 at the time Injustice seemed like an old school type of comic.
"Her 'romps' with Poison Ivy." Yes, uh, "romps." That's what we'll call it.
they're just gal pals. obviously. nothing more. for sure. totally pg.
That's a movie I wouldn't mind seeing
+creshiell 13?
they are actually a couple kinda , pretty openly too.... kissing in some frames etc...
+Steve Von Doom I'm aware. I read Bombshells.
Just the live action one. The animated suicide squad movies are great
Absolutely love Harley Quinn.
X-23 is great!
do you have an Ep on X-23?
JG R An episode on would clones be legal in the real world xD As in can they get a passport or Identification papers since they are essentially a gender bent/younger version of the original person. (a.k.a I'm sleepy so this makes sense to me now,but I bet that when I wake up this is going to seem like a weird idea)
that's actualy a good idea!
+JG R You sure you're not sleepy too?
It seems like there might be a connection between her rising popularity and her recent lack of clothing. She didn't really get much attention until her costumes became more revealing. Arkham Asylum is a good example of that.
*****
So they took her clothing after she got more popular? That kind of goes against what Scott said in this video.
+Nova1080 Its a vicious circle, she got popular after they took off her clothers, and since she becamse so popular they tpok off more clothes wich made her even more popular
+itsinmyvein But when its harleys first time in a live action movie and you supposedly add "daddy's little monster" on her t shirt for one of her costumes and the character herself has a scene where she balls up the classic suit and throws it on the ground in exchange for the "shorts", then you know that somethings wrong and is counted as unworthy.
i loved her because she looked badass and acted badass. i loved her backstory, her backstory with the joker is so interesting, it's facisnating
lol probably true.
Might be one if those things that works in cartoons, but doesn't translate well into a live action movie.
Margot Robbie tried it but it was too difficult for her to do.
+Jasmine Favela Really? Bummer. Glad she made the effort, though.
I was upset when she said she couldn't do it but then I realized she's Australian doing and American accent plus with a harsh New York accent
Wow. I didn't know she's Austrailian. I'm impressed!
I hate how the new Harley just seems like a whore
nothing else
Dude if its a problem for u then go direct and write the film yourself😂
+Pam Gray I cant becuase the film is alread out and made. Im just stating facts about why this harley isnt really harley. But its not going to stop me from watching the movie.
I understand you completely and I hope the film comes out great😌💕
+Pam Gray Awe thankyou.
(END SPOILERS FOR THE ANIMATED MOVIE)
As for the new movie, I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hoping for good things despite how little they show of her (every scene was showing that she's fun loving, flexible, or flirtatious, which is fine, but we didn't see much of her actual role...which is preferred over the trailer giving me the whole story).
I am kinda partial to the Gotham City Siren stories by Dini (but not the ones not by Dini), and the Amanda Conner series is a ton of fun.
Yeah, I was kind of disappointed they didn't really get mentioned.
agreed!!!!💯
+Amaranth are u indian?
I remember when I was 3 I saw Harley Quinn I thought "She's really pretty, I hope she's popular" and now she is
1st Thank goodness you finally brought up the point that Joker came to be after falling into a vat of chemicals at Ace Chemicals.
I'm already a mega fan of TAS so I knew before clicking on the video.
Your avatar gave that away. Haha
+NerdSync good vid Scott I love your vids keep on making great vids so totally thx for being awesom
She also had a TV appearance in 2004 as a villain in "Birds of Prey".
Just finished watching Variant's Harley vid lol
Haha, I had to text Arris yesterday just to make sure we weren't doing the same video.
Same. Suicide Squad hype!
I love the classic Harley Quinn from her own comic books, when she was best friend with her employee of the month (which was mentioned once in the Suicide Squad - Assault on Arkham cartoon), when she fled out of hell or later, with her new boyfriend Jimmy Olsen.
I have a big crush on the Margot Robbie Harley. That's it.
Same
Margot Harley is perfection
Alpaca Studios same she's so hot
looks yes voice Tara strong
Alpaca Studios yuck. Margot is gross.
I think this has been the best episode of comic misconceptions yet.
Harley Quinn is by far my favorite female character from DC

I like Harley but I dont like her new costumes, the should use the old one more.
I love the old costume the best so far, but I think her character is a perfect one to experiment with. I think we should get off of the mindset of her last few costumes, but I honestly want them to experiment with a lot of different costumes for a while. That in itself fits with her character, I think.
Maybe they should try to make a updated version of the old costume.
Frank Mitchell
That sounds pretty cool!
My younger sister was actually named after Harley Quinn
thats cool
Is your dad Kevin Smith?
you sister should fell ashamed
+Dangelo Roldan why? What's wrong with being named after Harley Quinn
+Purple yoshis in the sky I would've LOVED to be named nightwing.
Great vid! And the new setup is awesome.
Thanks! It's just temporary. The new official set is still in the works.
harley and Joker are a terrible couple, harley and Ivy are the best together. just something to add to the HQ subject
+
I don't think I'd use the term"terrible" there, "horrifically disfunctional" seems to fit better when describing those two.
i agree, i like harley's character but at times i wish theyd made her a little bit less of a bimbo... just saying she comes across as that when she's so obsessed and willing to do anything for the joker who treats her like crap. itd be nice if they made her a little bit more independent/smarter.
So you want her to be like every other strong female character on tv?
+Flor harley is supposed to represent women in abusive relationships so it kinda makes sense that she is so blinded by love
In all honesty, hints at Joker having a suitress were already there in the Batman TV series of the '60s, fon an instance there was Baby Jane in Pop goes the Joker/Flop goes the Joker, all throughout the episodes you'll find many parallels with Harley Quinn.
Didn't Tara Strong voice Harley?
In the other Arkham games, yes. But Arkham Asylum was Sorkin.
***** Huh. I thought she voiced her in BTAS too.
She voiced as Batgirl
+JJPivotz Tara also voiced harley in injustice gods among us, and I THINK a few dc animated movies...not assault on arkham that IK wasn't her...Ik soykien was Harleys original voice and inspiration, but imo I feel that like twilight sparkle, harley Quinn was the role Tara was born to play, hell I really wish she'd be playing harley in live action in the suicide squad movie but it's too late...though she is trying to get a live action cameo in a solo Harley movie made after SS
Tara Strong also voiced her in Harley's small cameo on the Arrow TV show. She does a smashing job at matching her voice!
Thank you. I can't say how much I appreciate the way you talk about comics.
Going down the comments I think it's worth noting that people are clearly forgetting that there are multiple alternate universes...
+NerdSync Why is Harley Quinn Red & Blue now instead of Red & Black? Was it to reinvent her?
Possibly. This actually gives me an idea about a theory. I'll bring this up in the next Tales!
+NerdSync Sounds great! Looking forward to it, please keep up the great work you guys are doing.
+NerdSync well due to printing process blue is better alternative to black a la Neal Adams' batman design
I prefer the new one
+LolFactory XD I prefer the traditional red and black. To each their own.
There's also the Gotham Sirens series, and she also had a comic with Zatana, I think it was called " Harley's Big Book Of Magic ". And Harley Quinn was in the Suicide Comics before new52, ( ex: Suicide Squad Walled In ).
Just forgot to mention birds of prey when we see her not just as a joker´s subordinate, but as a good girl instaid
That's true! There's a lot I didn't mention. I just wanted to give the broad strokes, as it wasn't the main focus of the video.
Great!
But make some Birds of Prey videos in the future tho, maybe the movie is coming soon
INCONCEIVABLE!
Fucking 10/10.
like harly from batman animed serires the best
Same here...
What do you mean?
Or how every 20 something years old girl was a always a fan and is being sexualized, jeezz
I remember her first appearance on TV way back in the 90's. I thought she was pretty cool. I'm glad she took off and became popular, she really is a very intriguing character.
now, when you say feminism, do you mean real feminism or third wavem
Read the book to find out! Haha

Sorry but what he says has been confirmed by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Harley's creators, not just some lesser writers.
I always love hearing Harleys story of how she was so popular that she HAD to be adapted into the comics.
I _sooo_ love Harley Quinn. And I totally love her name too. It's so cute! I like her first iteration the best, with the full court jester outfit. She's also the most interesting character to me in the Suicide Squad. I wish there would be a show or movie based on her relationship with Poison Ivy.
i just love all harleys
Everyone likes the original Harley from the Animated Series. I like the costumes that she wore in Arkham City and Knight along with the Insurgent look (the Punk ass version) in Injustice Gods Among Us
I'm so happy Harley Quinn got popular she's one of my favorite comic book characters💙
Moving on.)
Harley Quinn is one of the most commonly listed Comic characters of those created for the TV before the comic.
Never herd of her until suicide squad came out an have been unsesed with all her versions ever since!!! It was awsome to learn her origins! Thank you
My favorite version of Harley was when she had a tv show about love.
Scott! Kessel and Dodson's run was dope man. I don't know what you talking about...
Looking at the older versions of her, the current one is my favourite.
i've seen alot of complaints about the redesigns of Harley but I always felt there was a certian charm they had that I'd like to see reworked into her old design, The died twin pigtails, Particularly her Black and Red variant, the only problem I had with the original harley design was the hat but the pigtails fix that problem whle sticking pretty close to that form.
Great video! nerdsync is the best comic channel on youtube!
0:18 WHAT!?!? All of a sudden I love Harley Quinn a lot more
My parents and I have always loved the Harley Quinn character for almost my whole life
My favorite version of Harley will always be in the arkham games! LOVE YOU TARA STRONG
I LOVE HARLEY QUINNNNN
The moment Harley premiered on Batman: The Series, I was hooked. She was just so ballsy, quirky, intriguing and fun.
Although, I never followed up on her after the show. We'll see what Suicide Squad delivers.
I wish Arleen didn’t retire. Loved her voice
5:46 idk I grew up watching the batman superman team up cartoon movie and fell in love with harley from that
You forgot a few appearances like birds of arkham, though out of all the appearances I prefer new 52 due to one of the issues finally resolving the decades old relationship with the joker.
Harley is awesome in many forms . Love her !
I love all things Harley. I am reading both the early 2000s comic run and the current one. Also I grew up on the animated series.
Ive always liked Harley!! her updated version is different from how I first met her but I like her just as much!!
Cool!
When I first saw the Movie Trailers for Suicide Squad... I was like; "I don't like Harleys Look!!."
Then I was at a Local Mall and there was some Batman Figures.
Just a quick correction: Gordon wasn't having a birthday party. His services as police commissioner were being honored. Great origin video though!
And then Timm and Dini strike gold again by creating the character Terry McGinnis, AKA Batman Beyond. With a little thought and creativity, even a cartoon character can end up influencing the source material. They could do no wrong in that regard. Lockdown, you say? What're you even talking about?
Awesome video! one of my fav channels
back in the 70's when DC briefly revived the teen titans in their own title there was a character named the joker's daughter who also went by the name harlequin. there was also a golden age dc character named harlequin.
wikipdeia : "Harlequin is the name of four clown-themed DC Comics characters.
