Partially but its also Apples fault for being stubborn with the deisgn which led to cooling restraints.
You can’t blame Intel for Apple’s thin design vision resulting in a hot laptop.
@@benjibananas420 So why are *Apple's* own A and M series chips running so much cooler? I blame *Intel.*
@@charlesrovira5707 I don’t exactly know how but Intel chips are designed different. More designed for PC’s. PC’s have way more space for cooling

Yes but that's really not the main reason when talking about the Macbook in my opinion; my laptop is really large and has an intel processor but don't get as hot as a Macbook when playing video games for example so I think the principal reason is the one explained in the video
didn't apple put a fan on one of the macbooks just for it to make some noise instead of actually cooling the inferno of a processor?

Thank you, now i don’t have to watch the video and literally waste 3 minutes of my life.
Just to keep their products thin and look cool, apple designed a whole new chip for their products. That is truly insane
Nope. Because Intel was slacking on their nm sizing. Made it that entire generations of macs passed where there was no drastic enough to be useful boost in computing power compared to the previous gen, and sales suffered because people caught onto that. The makers of the m series use a different standard from Intel so it’s said that the chips are really 7nm instead of 5, but still, made it they went from 14nm to 7nm in one generation. Now it’s a hit.
@@cameronf3343 That's true and intel is now pretty lame 👎😑
Not only does it look cool, but also cool to the touch ;)
I mean it isn't intel's fault. Apple was using x86 processors, and just happened to choose Intel as a supplier. The m1 chips run cooler, as they use the arm architecture. Arm is the better option for macs because they run a lot cooler and macs are considerably smaller, with less space for cooling. It does isolate the ecosystem more however, as it makes running x86 applications next to impossible(duh). For overall raw performance, you would still want an x86 chip, it is faster but only if you have a PC (or a hackintosh i guess) with sufficient space for cooling. But on a system with highly limited cooling ability, the m1 is amazing.
@@kabinet0 I think isolating the ecosytem is a lot of the point. There's nothing apple hates more than people using their devices in unintended ways or repairing them themselves.

I was playing sims the other night and kept wondering why my MacBook kept getting hot and loud so quickly! Thanks for answering my questions!
The answer I've wanted for a while now....
Answer: apple is dumb and refuses to put vents on the bottom. It's not like it's unaesthetic anyway, you don't look at the bottom of your laptop.
@@thanhavictus did you watch the video?
@@thanhavictus Apple has always wanted to delight users with lightweight products. Macs were severely held back by Intel. Now with M1, the thin Macs without vents on the bottom have almost excessive performance and battery life while staying cold. Apple's ambitions were right, but the components were wrong.
@@thanhavictus Apple has the philosophy that the computer must be beautiful, and tidy inside, or in the parts you don't see or use only once. See the interiors of Macbooks all black and almost symmetrical, while you see the interiors of a classic laptop. Or think about the new iMac with the magnetic attachment.. You only use it once, what was the point of making the magnetic attachment? But they did.
@@thanhavictus I agree that apple doesn’t make a lot of good choices. Like for example for their MacBook Pro in 2016, they put a fan in it but there was no vents to vent the air to the cpu (or something else that needs cooling) and instead the fan just spun to create sound. The fan did *nothing* other than act as a placebo effect probably. It is true that intel processors get hot but other laptop brands also use intel processors and theirs don’t run that hot at all and their fans aren’t that loud. All at the cost of the laptop being a *tiny* bit thicker but still very very light and having some vents at the bottom that you don’t look at anyways. And I actually do like the look of the vents. So blaming the entire problem on intel isn’t actually correct when apple didn’t build their laptop with proper cooling in the first place. That’s why their motherboard in their MacBook Pro 2016 kept suddenly dying. Just got to fucking hot.

Dave2d’s video was remarkable in that he highlighted the overheating problem with a refrigerator test. Awesome reviewer.
It's one of the reasons why Apple has never called the MacBook a "laptop." It was never intended to be used on the lap because of the ventilation issues.
If it used it on my lap I would lose the ability to have children
Yup. they call it a notebook.
@@gamerpanda3590 That's only a small sacrifice.

@@pineberryfox bruh, how old is that device?

The real answer is they want to design a product that kills itself so you buy a new one, but ill take this one.
Yep!
I have been subscribed to your channel for quite some time and watch you regularly, and I think this is the first time I’m ever writing a comment about one of your videos (I have liked many of your videos) I think a crucial thing that you missed is not only that Apple is obsessed with industrial design, but they’re even more obsessed with compute per watt. That is the reason they switched from PowerPC to Intel. Intel had promised even more complete/Watt, but never delivered on that. Apple designed the MacBook based on the Intel road map that never materialized. Your information was still all correct, but missing this fact would make people think that Apple will make industrial design decisions without considering the technical realities.
I'm not even really into tech, but I got into this channel because a lot of these videos were recommended, and I'd read the titles and think, "hmm, yeah why is that?" But now it's caused me to look my Apple products in a different light. I've pretty much been fully immersed in the ecosystem for over a decade, and these videos have caused me to really appreciate the reasoning and design behind the products I'd use every day, but had never given a second thought.
Watching this as my Macbook is overheating 😂
There’s an error in your script. The i9 overheating issue was with the 15 inch model a year or so earlier. The 16 inch was a redesign to address the issue (along with a return to scissor switches), which fixed the problem entirely.
Thank you for mentioning that. I was wondering. I have a core i9 MBP16, and it does get quite warm sometimes, especially above the TouchBar, but the fan noise is minimal. I do use it on a notebook stand which does help keep it cooler.
But the problem with that Apple throttles the CPUs the use, so an i9 on a MBP is not equivalent to an i9 other laptops. 16 inch may have been better but it's still a kneecapped processer.
@@ViMBarN There’s no throttling, the 9980H/HK is a 45W part. Not sure where you’re getting that information…
@@thomast847 @Thomas T You're right.. I went back to check the reviews I had seen but I guess it was just a preconceived notion I had from previous models.. The stock undervolting in MacOS to get even better performance was a stroke of genius of the engineers!
@@ViMBarN I've just installed Intel Power Gadget and am running a one-hour Handbrake project on my MBP16 (core i9). Just after the process started, power utilization shot up from 10 watts or so up to 70. Processor frequency is pretty much pegged at 3.8GHz. Core utilization is at 30-40%. Temperature began to rise quickly within ten seconds or so, and then another 20-30 seconds later, the fan ramped up to a high speed. It's about as loud as a DVD while burning at max speed, FWIW.
But the point is the throttling: it's not.
These specs have been holding steady for over 20 minutes. There is no throttling.
I think Thomas T got it right: Apple Explained got that detail wrong. It was the 15-inch MacBook that was infamous for this. This is the first time for me to hear anyone saying it is happening with MBP16. And I've tested it. It. Is. Wrong.
I hope Apple Explained addresses this point. Passing on rumors, especially harmful rumors that get busted, can wreck a reputation. I'm pretty sure this 2018 MBP15 / 2019 MBP16 mix up was a careless mistake.
I'm pretty sure that anecdote you mentioned about the "16 inch i9" model was actually a 15" model which led them to create the 16 inch version later.
Cool video with awesome graphics and animations.... Love it.... Which service or application are you using for the graphich and animations?
And then Apple went like:

The problem really is actually Intel, not just Apple. Most other companies have problems with heat on Intel chips as well, not only Apple.
Well, it's not exactly Intel the problem itself, apple make the M1 to be efficient to their OWN system MacOs. Apple just was stubborn with that unnecessary design limitation.
@@ramone.chacon5084 It actually WAS mostly only Intels fault. Every Laptop manufacturer (still) has problems cooling Intel chips and they always drain power like no tomorrow. Intel isn't even talking about efficiency on their new 11th Gen which is never a good sign and first tests show why they haven't talked about it.
Apple on the other hand is probably the best ARM design company on earth. They always focus on efficiency while also having the best performing chips in terms of power and functionality.

Just to clarify, this video only talking about “Intel” generation chip MacBooks up to early 2020.
The late 2020 onwards of M1 chip is far superior than all Intel MacBooks and current ultra slim Windows laptops.
The Spectre x360 was a weird choice for comparison. My dad owns one and it gets extremely hot all the time. The fans kick on to attempt cooling it down even when it’s just sitting on a desk in sleep mode or doing nothing.
Thank you as always!
why don't you upload daily I really like ur content
Another thing is that Apple wanted to keep their laptops quieter than competing products, so they allow the internals to get hotter before the fans start spinning. They also had some pretty idiotic design choices such as the intel MacBook air that had nothing connecting the heat spreader to the fan.
The fan is doing nothing, basically. It was better to save weight and not include the fan altogether, or make a better passive cooling system

@@pineberryfox i know, intel is sh*t, but i still woudn't cover the vents in that way on an amd laptop
Before watching the video, I already know the answer is so that the computer's lifespan is shortened and the customer has to buy a new one sooner.
The usual Apple tactic.
Not to mention the crappy intel cpus that you can cook an egg on then the MacBooks having crappy cooling as usual
Maybe one way to do it is to move everything to the screen part, except the battery. I mean, they are not putting anything but type-c ports onto MacBook anymore, there's nothing keeping them away from splitting the thickness in half in order to achieve that. IIRC it only takes 4.4mm of thickness to fit in a USB-C port, and probably a little bit less if they build the socket shield right into the chassis. (In that case, USB-C plug is no thicker than 3.2mm)
And with that in mind, we can probably see a MacBook with 5 mm screen part and 8 mm keyboard part, that is passively cooled.

I have prioritized function over form with my current laptop. It's a thicc boi with air vents on the sides and back and an air intake on the bottom that looks like a ventilation unit from the death star (along with unusually tall rubber feet).
