Set your calendars and join us THIS FRIDAY on June 24 @ 6pm Eastern to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Super Carlin Brothers with a TRIVIA Livestream!
If I had a nickle for every time Chris Evans played a character who time traveled without aging a day I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
I love how they took into account that this movie would’ve come out in the 1990’s, so they had to use knowledge of what future tech would be like based on “current” tech. Hence why Buzz blows on the Ivan cartridge!
Considering the higher quality of animation compared to the humans in the original Toy Story, the idea that this would look animated to the is just absurd. Heck, It probably looks too good for live action...
I just imagine Andy sitting with his friend or significant other someday and being like.."Do you remember that time in the early 90s when we all had that uncanny valley thing going on and we kind of looked like hazy faced nightmare dolls? That was weird right? I heard something similar happened in the 1950s but not as bad..then everyone just got all super detailed after like a year..also, did you know there were legit superheroes then? Like..I remember seeing the Buzz lightyear movie and stuff but like..there were legitimately people who could shoot eye lasers and lift buildings and stuff running around in public just 40 years before. And I SWEAR I had a monster in my closet as a kid..like a legit one who told me jokes..the world is wierd."
The director said it's live action when Andy watches it, BUT the movie credits Disney and Pixar Animation in its in-universe credits...so it could go either way.
I think you are forgetting what Sox says about how long it took him to come up with the new formula. He said it took him over 60 years plus he was given to Buzz AFTER his first trip, which means it was already over 4 years in. If you go on that information, he travels for over 80 years
My GOD, this video is a breath of fresh air after all the discourse. I can just sit back and watch two brothers discuss the movie's themes, the journey of the characters, and how it connects to Toy Story.
I know right!! I love it, this is what I want after just finishing the movie. Not “well it’s not what I wanted it to be” or “lightyear failed, it’s bad”
I think it's implied that Buzz repeated the test flights 15 times. Since the last ship he flies on is XL-15. And if each test takes 4 years, 15 tests would be 60 years. And if Sox spent around 62 years making the successful formula that implies down time between the tests as well.
The last flight (when he successfully reached hyperspace flight) took 20+ years. EDIT: except the last flight happened after Sox revealed he had successfully created the formula (...obviously...), so you're probably right.
I think the total would be around 88 years. The first mission is 4 years, THEN Buzz asks Sox to work on the crystal, which takes him 62 years and something, and THEN the last one (the successful one) takes 22 years. So, total of 88 years more or less.
The idea that Izzy is afraid of space made perfect sense to me, as she was brought up learning that they were never meant to stay on that planet, and it happened because space is so dangerous. Plus her grandmother's best friend disappears for years at a time, in space. She might be excited to follow in their footsteps as she sees them as her idols, but knowing their stories is also terrifying for a child to grow up with.
That doesn't really make sense, they're not stranded in the planet because space is dangerous they are stranded becuase the planet is hostile. Shes afraid of space not what's in it and she explains in the movie its becuaee shes afraid of drifting off endlessly. Plus they kmow why buzz disapears for years at a time, it isnt some great mystery.
I love that they actually used relativity and time dilation as a plot point. It was definitely exaggerated, but so many space movies just ignore it entirely that's its cool to see it used as a central plot point!
Yeah, like in Star Wars they travel between planets across their galaxy in a matter of hours or days and it's the same for everyone everywhere. Like what? But we suspend disbelief because they are good movies!
@@ThatOneLadyOverHere That wouldn't matter very much. While planets can be different masses, the enormous amount of mass required for noticeable time dilation effects isn't really represented in that difference. There'd be enough to easily measure with good equipment, certainly, but I imagine it's accounted for easily enough.
@@heatherrockwell9012 I was partly refering to how they traveled lightyears in a matter of days. But also what does time dialation have to do with the mass of planets? I thought it was just the speed you were going at?
this is why i can’t battle in space well, at all, and why i enjoyed the book Enders Game, as (from what i can recall) they spend time on this and how it factors into being in space!
Oh right, Hawthorne and her lady friend were one of the most perfect representations I've ever seen it's just like. Ohh who is she? and they're just together and happy and not a single message is being shoved down our throats
Sox was the biggest plot hole for me. I loved him. And I felt like Buzz would have been sold in a pack with Sox in the Toy Story world. Other than that, I loved the movie
It really does feels like Sox would have been THE toy that came out of that franchise. Buzz was supposed to be the toy that everyone wanted, but really, Sox would have sold more. I guess it's like Frozen merch. Sure, Elsa sells a ton, but Olaf got a huge amount of toys. You are telling me Andy never got a Sox?
Maybe Andy just didn’t like cats. He did get a dog for christmas. But way back when I don’t remember animals being sold with “boy toys,” especially not cats; animal companions tended to feature much more in merch targeted at girls or gender neutral; the whole SPACE Rangers! With sOUNDS and wEAPONS!! is pretty hyper masculine (that said I totally want a sox.)
I honestly thought it was great. I was totally engaged and laughing throughout the movie. I liked the Zurg twist. It made me feel uncertain and a little weirded out at first, but I’m a horror fan, so that’s nothing I can’t deal with!
Ok, to clarify this. The star does nothing, the ship loops around it as a standard distance measure for the test. The hyperspeed is all powered by the crystal.
It also works as a Star Trek reference, since sling-shotting around the gravitational pull of a Star was the go-to trick for time travel in that series.
I LOVED this movie! But if I’m honest, no matter how hard I try, this doesn’t feel like this would be the movie Andy watched in ‘95. It feels more like ‘22 reboot Andy would go watch *of* the original he saw as a kid
I thought the montage of Hawthorne aging and Buzz staying the same was really well done; made me tear up. I was way more invested in this than in Intetsaller. It reminded me of the Up coming, in that "life passes you by" kind of way.
I found it interesting that the Disney and Pixar logos appear after the opening sentence, which possibly implies that both of those things exist within the Pixar universe.
I just rewatched this movie and I found an Easter egg or just a continuity detail that I think you guys missed and I’d like to share it because I think it’s pretty neat. At the end of the movie, Buzz’s mission log is 4071. At the beginning of toy story, Buzz says mission log 4072. So this is the mission right before he’s headed to sector 12 so if Lightyear gets a sequel, it’ll definitely involve Zurg and some super weapon with the destructive capacity to annihilate an entire planet.
I’m a little behind on watching the movie, but finally caught up. One thing I did notice is that the timeline is a little different. Sox says it takes him 62 years, 7 month & 5 days to work out the formula, so it has been at least that plus the initial 4 and the subsequent 22 years! So at least 88 years for those on the ground.
Each time he went on a test flight, it looked like he was in a different ship, with a different IVAN. I think the timeline was much longer, with time between each flight to build a different ship.
What a way to portray Zurg as a variant of Buzz. It was something I wasn't expecting and I like it. He's basically fighting the inner demons he endured trying to complete the mission on bringing everyone home . The real Buzz moves on from what his priority is and this new Zurg Buzz is basically a reminder of his past mistakes which definitely makes a good villain.
I loved this movie! Buzz has always been my favourite and I really enjoyed this movie. Sox was great comic relief and adorable, and Buzz was so true to original Buzz in my opinion. So set in his ways and focused on the mission. Chris Evans killed it with his voice acting as well. 10/10 for me
I loooved it. It really felt like a real action science fiction movie. Like it's a movie that really exist within toy story andy went to watch in the theater.
Soks said that it took him 62 years to come up with the formula, so the fact that buzz didn’t bother to ask how much progress soks has made just shows how stubborn buzz is
43:08 When Buzz was on his final test mission, I.V.A.N. offered him the eject button and asked him "What are your final words?" and Buzz shouted "Not today!" Which paralleled the end fight when Zurg said "Prepare to die." and Buzz shouts "Not today, Zurg!" after pushing the eject button and getting his wings. It's also the same quote Buzz and Zurg exchange in Toy Story 2! 😭 So it's a double reference/parallel 🚀
I believe one of the implications of toy buzz being in the "new" suit is that at the end of the movie he heads off to explore space and now kids can have Buzz "land on and explore" their "planets" or bedrooms. Thats why toy buzz's first action is to report back to star command, because he believes he's on a new planet, and therefore AFTER the events of the film
Lightyear was delightful and enjoyed for what it was not a toy story sequel but the movie that inspired the toy and it was awesome. I see why Andy would want this toy on his toy box.
I saw this at an advance screening. Enjoyed it very much though this may not be the absolute strongest Pixar offering. Just a few things disjointed /under explained /paced oddly. Besides Sox, I didn't find the characters to pop and sparkle as much as they meant to. The notion of a hero being obsessively single minded turning into a villain is a great theme. If only I hadn't seen it so recently. I think a rewatch is in order to appreciate the story more. Though I will just end up wanting Sox twice as much.
If Lightyear is a film in the Toy Story world, then that means the characters are played by actors who exist in that world. I wonder what their real names are, especially the guy who played Buzz.
Maybe Dylan Neal's fictional counterpart who lives in the Toy Story universe? Sure, this is just a guess, but maybe in the future, Disney will reveal the fictional actors behind the Lightyear.
Can we also remember that in the Pixar Universe, there was also the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated series? So it could've possibly been like Batman from 1989 where because of the success of the movie, they decided to spin off an animated cartoon as well as continue the live action story. That could be where the Buzz in Toy Story got the idea of the "Evil Emperor Zerg" and him having the super weapon on the edge of the galaxy, since that was a part of the animated series. I wish this series would be added to Disney+!
The animated pilot I watched as a kid definitely felt more true to what would inspire a Buzz Lightyear action figure. Zurg and Star Command feel grand and part of a large universe, while here they’re all so small and isolated to a single planet.
I am going to be very honest, I might get so much hate over here. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but I did have a good time with it. My main problems are Zurg, the feel of it being a marvel movie, the story, and a bit of the pacing. I love the animation, the emotional weight, score, the performances, and many more. It’s a pretty good movie despite its issues. I’ll give it a B.
Yeah. Zurg’s twist felt like…….it retconned everything about who he is like- “Evil Emperor Zurg” etc. is such an iconic thing with Buzz in the original films…..But it was the ONLY thing I didn’t like. And we mostly saw it for my 4-year old and he LOVED it and it was his first movie theater-movie so it will always be special.
@@PrincessMeggala0913 I’m glad he loved it so much. I do believe it did ruin Zurg a lot. In Toy Story 2, he saw Buzz on the street and said, “Destroy Buzz Lightyear! Destroy Buzz Lightyear!”. Even if it wasn’t an older Buzz Lightyear, why didn’t he just destroy him like he said he would?
@@LiamSPC9065 right right. But maybe their theory about Zurg being really a different Zurg who got his ship stolen by future Buzz and yeah……mm. I guess we’ll see
I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet (they probably did, but at 26:35, the question is asked that the AI pays off. The answer is that when Buzz was on Zurg's ship and trying to set the self-destruct, he didn't recognize the computer controls, but he saw IVAN. He was immensely relieved because the autopilot could set the self-destruct for him, so he saw the use in it then.
Now that we have Lightyear (which is a movie that takes place in the Toy Story universe), we need a Woody spin off tv show of the same vein called Woodys Roundup.
It took 62 years for Sox to make the formula, then an additional 22 years pass for a total of 84 years since they were stranded… actually more like 88 cuz he dosnt get Sox till after the first 4 years
Something I think is cool after seeing the movie is that whether done on purpose or not I can see how in universe this movie influenced the Buzz lightyear cartoon show. All of buzzs team in the movie have matching personalities to his team in the show. Camander Burnside is alot like Captain Nebula. And they probably simplified/ murged character backgrounds for the show. Like mixing future Buzz and old Hothorn to create Warp Darkmatter. Even the bugs on the planet could have been turned into the beetles that work for Zurg. And they replaced future buzz's Sox with the brains in jars. And of course my head cannon is that Pizza Planet was a huge part in making that show happen and that's why Star Command has the LGMs
Sometimes sox feels like “cat-ex machina” because he can do everything, the thing to cut the door, he can hack etc etc but he’s funny and makes quite a bit of sense because a companion will have to do everything so I’m happy with it
Now it would be awesome if they do something like this but with Woody’s Roundup Gang (and I think Stinkypete would be a good guy and The Villain would be Billy The Kid, I mean Disney got Blackbeard in The Pirates of The Caribbean so 🤷🏻♂️)
After finally getting to watch the film, I can say I surprised. By the way in total there where 14 missions before the 22 year time jump on the 15th ship for the program. At 4 years per mission that would be 52 years, add in the 22 year time jump and the total travel time comes out to 74 years.
Each time he went on a test flight, it looked like he was in a different ship, with a different IVAN. I think the timeline was much longer, with time between each flight to build a different ship.
I really enjoyed Lightyear, as an animation geek I loved the animation, it was gorgeous, Buzz's character arc was very satisfying to me, I wasn't expecting future Buzz to be Zurg, and I loved how I went into this movie expecting Pixar Star Wars, but I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't feel like a Pixar version of Star Wars, it felt like something completely different, the other characters were entertaining, specifically Sox, my only complaint that I can really think of comes more from the way it was marketed, I think they should have saved the time travel twist for the movie and not revealed it before hand in trailers, though they still managed to surprise me in that he didn't skip all 60 years at once, I understand some of the complaints that I have seen, but I quite honestly adored it
I had a feeling Zurg was going to be Buzz just because that kind of thing seems to happen when the time shenanigans start going on. Still loved how it represented him having a reckoning with the man he was becoming.
So Here's what I think!! The buzz that Andy got is from the upcoming sequel to his favourite movie, that's where the plot of "zurg death star" comes from
"Just a mailman". That comment hit hard. For 8 years of my life, I woke up every morning as US Marine. Now, I wake up as "just a mailman". Thanks to your comment, I now feel connected to Buzz(toy story). It's been 3 years, & I still haven't been able to readjust to civilian life.
It just really doesn’t feel like a movie a 10 year old ninties kid would be obsessed with I think. There’s no crazy aliens or colourful planets, it’s kind of bleak, and feels overall just like a REBOOT of some kind of buzz origin story (Too modern). I would have liked to see buzz in training to be a space ranger and just give him more space antics and things
41:09 I think it would have been better to maybe add “falling with style” when Sox and Izzy cross part of space and get to the other side of the ship in the airlock. I know it wouldn’t be perfect due to in space you don’t really fly, but it might have a similar sensation
I really hope they do "2 Lightyear 2 Infinity", cause by the end of this movie it really is still just a beginning - the new space program is starting, Zurg is still alive (or multiple Zurgs!), we still don't know anything about their original mission or Buzz's backstory, and there's still a bunch left to connect to what we know from Toy Story, so there's a whole lot of story left and I hope they do something with it
I loved this movie! I thought it was the right mix of comedy, action, and a little bit of heart. I love that it can completely stand alone as it’s own movie in 2022 and be used to give Toy Story more depth in 1995.
I really loved that it can also be a standalone movie. I went to see it with my dad and sister, neither of who have watched any toy story films, but they still understood the movie.
Buzz becomes appreciative of IVAN when he goes to the control room of Zurg's ship to set it to self-destruct, only to realize that he doesn't know how to do that because he is unfamiliar with the controls. Then he sees IVAN, and for the first time he is utterly relieved to see something so familiar and the exact thing he needs right now, an interface he can use to control the ship.
I believe the implication is, in fact, that old buzz said his name was buzz, and the aliens tried to pronounce it and could only come out as "b-zurg" I say this, because I watched the movie on disney plus, with subtitles, and they are written as saying "b-zurg" even from before the reveal happens.
I think the biggest real world parallel to selling the buzz figure with the suit he has only at the end of the movie, is how in the real world Disney loves to promote and sell Rey from star wars with a yellow lightsaber like it is her signature lightsaber. Despite the fact that she didn't use it at all and it only had like 15 seconds of screen time at the end of the final movie in her trilogy.
I loved all of the references. Especially blowing on the cartridge like an N64 game. And the cat robot being named Socks. Which is also a book about a cat
I think more like 89 years pass in total. He goes on the first mission which takes about 4 years. After that he tells Sox to solve the fusion problem, which ends up taking sox 63 years to solve crystallic fusion. The last mission he goes on is successful, but Sox tells him that mission took about 22 years 👍🏾. They do spend a year setting up for the first trip, so technically the movie takes place over the course of about 90 years.
i brought my 2001 buzz toy to the theater!( I'm 22...) and he's got the gravitational belt from toy story 2! when the movie ended I thought" what if there's a lightyear 2 and they give him that belt?????" this could be fun like... the new buzz we see in the video game that rex is playing, and the one we see in the mall, fighting with our buzz...could actually be from the lightyear 2 movie... that maybe existed too in the pixar universe!!
I didn't come into this movie wanting another "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command", and completely ignored any ties it claimed to have to the toy story universe. I watched this movie as if it was completely stand alone, and judging by other reviews, I think I had a much better time for it. I actually absolutely loved this movie. The characters spoke to me on a level most don't reach. The life I lead is one where I only come home every couple years, so focused on work it only feels like it's only been a month or so. Then I see all the people I cared about living big and full lives without me as time passes me by... it just hit harder than I was prepared for. And then when Buzz met Zurg I loved what the hero villain dynamic became, it was Buzz having a reckoning with the person he didn't realize he was becoming. 'What is the mission?' Vs. 'What is YOUR mission?' That hit hard for me to.
Thank you. It's a mature sci-fi for adults that takes more chances than anything Pixar has done. Muted colors are reminiscent of The Incredibles while standing out on its own.
I do believe that the official time for Buzz off world is roughly 89-years. We know the first jump was 4 years, then when he returned he tasked Sox with solving Crystallic Fusion. We then see the time montage with all the jumps, then when he returns and gets grounded, Sox says it took him 63- years to solve it. Then after that they make the successful jump that takes him away for 22-years. When it comes to the on world time, its a bit more unclear but there has to be at least a few weeks on world. Since it would've taken them a few days before the first test and then i imagine each flight was spread by at least one day to rest and refresh.
I really felt like the end of this was setting up for a Disney plus original show. I could see this as an episodic television show starting those characters.
Overall, I thought the movie was okay, but there is no excuse for what they did to Zurg. I struggle to understand why they got so lazy with that character. I swear, everything is explained in a paragraph. Maybe they were planning to have a real Zurg in a sequel as you suggest, but what they did was not a good way to even allude to the character. The movie would've been so much better if Zurg was just a straight up villain. He doesn't have to be Buzz's father, but what we got instead was definitely not better.
I managed to spot two Easter eggs when I saw the movie; the first one I saw I can’t really remember when but buzz was standing in front of scream canisters and in the vending machine I saw a poultry palace type meal from the short small fry.
I think they used the gravitational forces of the sun/star to get him back to the planet at the end of each test, like a safety measure and he doesn't just goes in a straight line into space. Kinda like a U-turn
They were actually doing something very astronomically accurate of what we call a slingshot maneuver. It’s a way we actually use in interplanetary travel to gain speed using a hyperbolic orbit. Super cool stuff and very accurate
I am happy that these guys are giving this movie a positive review because I saw it with my brother and we loved it. We were shocked to hear it didn’t do well.
Funny thing I thought of? This of all things could tie into the Pixar theory. The reason it seems more modern and such is because things advanced more, as the Incredibles showed that things advanced way quicker then in our world, them having modern-ish tech and culture in the 60s.
I went in not expecting too much, was happily surprised. I quite enjoyed this movie! Also I liked that there were two post-credits scenes (well, more like mid-credit and then post-credit).
When I first saw the trailers I was worried that Socks would be annoying. But he was my favorite character in the entire movie. I didn’t think about Zerg the way you described with buzz stealing the ship and the suit. Actually makes me really excited because I was kind of disappointed with how was Zerg was portrayed
Since the original Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated movie/tv pilot also set it up with the Toy Story characters watching it as a movie, it would be fun if that was an animated movie/pilot based on this Lightyear movie that was basically a remake.
One of the problems I found is by looking at it from the promotional material it looked amazing and something unique, the background of Buzz Lightyear was a concept that really interested me after watching Toy Story 2. The visuals were out of this world but I the story definitely wasn’t fulfilled to it’s potential, I still remain optimistic about it and I’m sure it would be a great watch if I was bored. I guess my expectations for the movie were set to be a bit too high, but it was high for a reason.
I've seen so many people talking about the problems of like, how Andy wouldn't have liked this movie because Buzz isn't enough of an action hero, or I've even seen one that goes "You couldn't make a movie like this back then! Unrealistic!" When in actuality the most unrealistic thing about this movie being made back then is a gay couple being depicted in any positive or acceptable light. Note, this is simply meant to be a joke to make someone laugh, I too, am glad it was in the movie in a very accepted normal thing, its good for kids to know that's normal.
27:00 I think he atleast can think becuz he tranquilizer darted old buzz "I bought you five minutes" and said he likes the new buzz better so no one told him to do that that's a choice he made.(I miss that sox)
I just can't get my head around the negativity and hate for the film. I would give it 4/5 stars and out of all 26 Pixar film, Lightyear is my 8th favourite. Interms of criticisms I think maybe the film had a little too much comedy, the side characters aren't the most memorable characters, and there are a couple of inconsistencies with what we learn in toy story. And there are othe films that have a stronger, more original story overall but these are only minor points. The story was certainly still a solid interesting story as were the characters. Zurg probably should have been a robot but I honestly don't mind the twist, I think it worked and you understand his motivations. The time travel stuff was a clever and interesting element that actually created for some very heavy emotion. The design and animation of all the Si-fi elements was amazing. It was refreshing to see Pixar do such a different genre change and they did it very well. We also got plenty of references to toy story when we heard all the iconic Buzz quotes. Overall this film was an fun, action packed Si-fi adventure. That's what the trailers looked like, that's what I was expecting and that's what I got
I really enjoyed it. Is it perfect? No, but it was enjoyable and heart warming. The only weird thing about it was that it felt more like a modern movie than a 90s sci-fi, so it does not seem like this would have been a movie that Andy would have watched to inspire his desire for a Buzz toy. Instead, it would have been more likely a movie seen by Bonnie’s slightly older cousin. However, that is more of a semi-meta thing about the movie than the movie itself.
So I thought this movie was ok for a Pixar movie. Your video changed my opinion, now I want to watch it again and look for all the details yall pointed out. Thanks! :)
So, more than a month ago, my parents got the Lightyear GOLDEN BOOK for my kid, and they're always a skim synopsis of the movies they depict, but it just struck me as a little weird, like "here's the whole movie in a book before the movie is out." But, kiddo is primed for the raspberry escape
He says hi to ivan because the ai was the only thing that he recognised in the command-deck and was able to use to activate the self-destruction of zurg’s ship
THE BROTHERS WERE RIGHT! I just watched the movie before this video and when the opening screan came on I literaly shouted "THE CARLINBROTHERS WERE RIGHT!!!"
I really loved Lightyear and I'm glad y'all did as well. I saw it yesterday in 3D and it looked so epic and incredible, especially all the action scenes in the movies. The action scenes were just non - stop high stakes and twists and turns, especially the middle parts. I loved the scene where Buzz flew at the end in order to save the day. That caught me so off guard. I loved every minute of Sox in the film. He was literally my favourite character throughout, I laughed so hard at everything he did. I too was worried he was going to be overused throughout the film and it was going to become really annoying. I also was worried he was going to take away from all the action scenes, but he totally stole the show for me. I loved the way all the time travel scenes are done really well because they haven't broken any of the rules of time travel. I love Buzz's character in the film and his relationship with the others at the end of the movie. I thought the movie fit well with Buzz's character in Toy Story. I found a lot of the lines funny, even the ones that came from the Toy Story films themselves. I actually love y'all's idea that Buzz was annoyed in the original TS that he wasn't a space ranger, not necessarily that he wasn't a toy. I think that fits a lot better with his character personally. All in all, this movie is almost as good as the TS films (which are well crafted masterpieces, btw 100%). Lightyear gets a 98% from me.
Set your calendars and join us THIS FRIDAY on June 24 @ 6pm Eastern to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Super Carlin Brothers with a TRIVIA Livestream!
i love you
YESSS!!!!!
Happy scb spirit week everyone!
Congrats!
The sun wasn’t used to activate the crystal, it’s gravity was used to prevent Buzz from rocketing into distant space when he jumped to light speed
If I had a nickle for every time Chris Evans played a character who time traveled without aging a day I'd have two nickles, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice.
perfect comment
Dude, I totally made this comment on their Lightyear Pixar theory video. We have the same brain.
Good reference to Dr Doof😁
Though different methods. So, one is Canadian?
Also there's an old version of him
I love how they took into account that this movie would’ve come out in the 1990’s, so they had to use knowledge of what future tech would be like based on “current” tech. Hence why Buzz blows on the Ivan cartridge!
I have an interesting question. In Andy watches this movie, Does he see an animated movie, or a live-action movie?
I believe it is a live-action movie
I was wondering the same thing lol
The director said it's live action when Andy watches it, BUT the movie credits Disney and Pixar Animation in its in-universe credits...so it could go either way.
I love how Sox' dart turned out to be Checkov's gun. He only has one, but Zurg's Sox never had to use it because the timeline was different.
I thought the timeline only split when Zurg changed the past himself
@@pinkliongaming8769 Yeah. Maybe Sox had multiple darts in case he missed the first shot or something.
@@rpmguy648 Or maybe he just got it reloaded at some point in the 50 years
I think you are forgetting what Sox says about how long it took him to come up with the new formula. He said it took him over 60 years plus he was given to Buzz AFTER his first trip, which means it was already over 4 years in. If you go on that information, he travels for over 80 years
I was the only person in my family to get that
My GOD, this video is a breath of fresh air after all the discourse. I can just sit back and watch two brothers discuss the movie's themes, the journey of the characters, and how it connects to Toy Story.
I know right!! I love it, this is what I want after just finishing the movie. Not “well it’s not what I wanted it to be” or “lightyear failed, it’s bad”
This was as equally terrible as the actual movie.
I just said the same thing
I loved how buzz blew into the cartridge of IVAN and the dial up tone when sox connected to the system. it was hilarious
It’s not IVAN, it’s I.V.A.N.
@@snuffles504 Each flight took 4 years and some change, not exactly 4 years
I think the total would be around 88 years.
The first mission is 4 years, THEN Buzz asks Sox to work on the crystal, which takes him 62 years and something, and THEN the last one (the successful one) takes 22 years.
So, total of 88 years more or less.
And the one year they spent making and setting up the small city.
@@island_fl Wonders of scifi technology.
Yeah, also space is terrifying.
Watch interstellar lol
@@Sisyphaded I have, and it's also great, but it's the exception, not the norm!
The don't look down or up brings a good point. In space, there is really no direction without a reference object.
this is why i can’t battle in space well, at all, and why i enjoyed the book Enders Game, as (from what i can recall) they spend time on this and how it factors into being in space!
made that comment^ before i finished the video, just thought it was funny the also mentioned Enders Game
Oh right, Hawthorne and her lady friend were one of the most perfect representations I've ever seen it's just like.
Ohh who is she?
and they're just together and happy and not a single message is being shoved down our throats
Yes, i loved how natural it was, and they didnt try to make it into anything.

@@guillermopena8412 just like groups sells more toys than din jarin
My only thought was,
That the people of Andy's reality, must have found Socks annoying, derivative...or offensive to AI cats.
Maybe Andy just didn’t like cats. He did get a dog for christmas. But way back when I don’t remember animals being sold with “boy toys,” especially not cats; animal companions tended to feature much more in merch targeted at girls or gender neutral; the whole SPACE Rangers! With sOUNDS and wEAPONS!! is pretty hyper masculine
(that said I totally want a sox.)
The directors said that when Andy’s mom went to buy buzz, Sox was sold out already but they could just be saying that to cover up lol idk
Since this was a movie Andy saw, we can presume it was live action. So who was the actor of Buzz? Any theories on his life?
I found it interesting that the Disney and Pixar logos appear after the opening sentence, which possibly implies that both of those things exist within the Pixar universe.
This wasn’t a movie Andy saw I know it says that at the beginning of the movie but it’s still a lie.
I laughed, I cried, I cheered. I will gladly be the only one who LOVED this movie!
No I absolutely LOVED this move! People are too harsh these days! The little nods to the original buzz was amazing
People just don’t get it they don’t understand time travel, or or how they fit in to toy story like we do
I got a little choked up, when it came to Hawthorne's farewell video to Buzz, especially when she did the "To Infinity" part.
I KNOW RIGHT!?!?!😭
I’m a little behind on watching the movie, but finally caught up.
Ok lets hear it.. whats your best Fast and the Furious themed Lightyear Sequel name?
Either Infinity and Beyond if we want to go with the X and X theme or Hyperspace and the Heroic if we want to go with Fast and Furious in this theme
Lightyear: Dark Millennium
2 Infinity 2 Beyond
Ligh2year
What a way to portray Zurg as a variant of Buzz. It was something I wasn't expecting and I like it. He's basically fighting the inner demons he endured trying to complete the mission on bringing everyone home . The real Buzz moves on from what his priority is and this new Zurg Buzz is basically a reminder of his past mistakes which definitely makes a good villain.
Yes
THANK YOU!
It is so great to see that some people get this.
I loved this movie! Buzz has always been my favourite and I really enjoyed this movie. Sox was great comic relief and adorable, and Buzz was so true to original Buzz in my opinion. So set in his ways and focused on the mission. Chris Evans killed it with his voice acting as well. 10/10 for me
If they ever do make a sequel to Lightyear, they need to have have Buzz either understand or speak Spanish.
Why would it matter? They already changed Buzz's canon within this movie, it's obviously not connected to toy story Buzz's creation
@@jakewhiston6461 This is the movie that Andy watched and then his mum bought him the toy based on this movie.
And if there was a sequel it would be named "Lightyear, 2 Infinity". 2 Infinity 2 B is to long of a title
Why?? Literally why???
@@mryoungandbrave1 if that was the case why would the toy line be so far off from the canon of the movie and same with the show
I loooved it. It really felt like a real action science fiction movie. Like it's a movie that really exist within toy story andy went to watch in the theater.
Soks said that it took him 62 years to come up with the formula, so the fact that buzz didn’t bother to ask how much progress soks has made just shows how stubborn buzz is
43:08 When Buzz was on his final test mission, I.V.A.N. offered him the eject button and asked him "What are your final words?" and Buzz shouted "Not today!"
Which paralleled the end fight when Zurg said "Prepare to die." and Buzz shouts "Not today, Zurg!" after pushing the eject button and getting his wings.
I LOVED SOX. FAVORITE PART OF THE MOVIE
Lightyear was delightful and enjoyed for what it was not a toy story sequel but the movie that inspired the toy and it was awesome. I see why Andy would want this toy on his toy box.
Delightful what part of it was delightful. All the characters feel so bland the story is awful and it has no plot build up
@@FatherOfDreams thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Just out of curiosity, where have you seen it recently?

I just got done watching the film, and it was amazing! It made me appreciate Buzz Lightyear even more!
Me too.
I finally got around to watching Lightyear!!! I am astonished to see a lot of meager reaction to it! I thought it was amazingggggg
I bet it's a man named "Tom Ellen."
Honestly not a bad idea
that's a pretty good point actually and would explain why those 2 things aren't present in lightyear.
I guess we’ll see
If people hate this, it’s them that are the problem.
@@PrincessMeggala0913 ohhhh I'd like that actually
I'm not sure if anyone else mentioned this yet (they probably did, but at 26:35, the question is asked that the AI pays off. The answer is that when Buzz was on Zurg's ship and trying to set the self-destruct, he didn't recognize the computer controls, but he saw IVAN. He was immensely relieved because the autopilot could set the self-destruct for him, so he saw the use in it then.
I.V.A.N. not IVAN.
Now that we have Lightyear (which is a movie that takes place in the Toy Story universe), we need a Woody spin off tv show of the same vein called Woodys Roundup.
It took 62 years for Sox to make the formula, then an additional 22 years pass for a total of 84 years since they were stranded… actually more like 88 cuz he dosnt get Sox till after the first 4 years
This film is the epitome of Life Passes You By
"Sox is AMAZING!" - J @7:37 - perfect callback to the "These socks are AMAZING!" outros!
Sometimes sox feels like “cat-ex machina” because he can do everything, the thing to cut the door, he can hack etc etc but he’s funny and makes quite a bit of sense because a companion will have to do everything so I’m happy with it
Now it would be awesome if they do something like this but with Woody’s Roundup Gang (and I think Stinkypete would be a good guy and The Villain would be Billy The Kid, I mean Disney got Blackbeard in The Pirates of The Caribbean so 🤷🏻♂️)
Him dropping the pod was infact perfection. Infinity and Beyond loop
I really enjoyed Lightyear, as an animation geek I loved the animation, it was gorgeous, Buzz's character arc was very satisfying to me, I wasn't expecting future Buzz to be Zurg, and I loved how I went into this movie expecting Pixar Star Wars, but I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't feel like a Pixar version of Star Wars, it felt like something completely different, the other characters were entertaining, specifically Sox, my only complaint that I can really think of comes more from the way it was marketed, I think they should have saved the time travel twist for the movie and not revealed it before hand in trailers, though they still managed to surprise me in that he didn't skip all 60 years at once, I understand some of the complaints that I have seen, but I quite honestly adored it
To the infinity and beyong
@Pepsi Only once or twice or six or seven times, but yes, I am absolutely obsessed with the show and I can't wait for Season 4
I really hope they do "2 Lightyear 2 Infinity", cause by the end of this movie it really is still just a beginning - the new space program is starting, Zurg is still alive (or multiple Zurgs!), we still don't know anything about their original mission or Buzz's backstory, and there's still a bunch left to connect to what we know from Toy Story, so there's a whole lot of story left and I hope they do something with it
Everyone should really recommend you for the review
You are the real reviewers
First 30 minutes were great, like really above very good. The rest of the movie I was zone out thinking it could have been so much more
I loved this movie!
You’re supposed to spell Ivan like this- I.V.A.N..
The time travel element is one of the movie's most realistic parts. He travels at relativistic speeds, so it's fundamental Einsteinian physics.
I believe the implication is, in fact, that old buzz said his name was buzz, and the aliens tried to pronounce it and could only come out as "b-zurg"
I say this, because I watched the movie on disney plus, with subtitles, and they are written as saying "b-zurg" even from before the reveal happens.
Everyone I know loves this movie, didn’t realize everyone on the internet hated it.
That's because the Internet trolls are uncultured and hate everything. They say everything is trash because they want to get people angry.
Saw it on the day it came out, and Sox the cat is the best part of the entire movie!
My favorite part was when Buzz was completing on the fly calculations under stress on the cockpit
Those are the two that I caught as well
Was it the ammunition on board the Armadillo? One of the boxes looked like it was full of miniature scream canisters.
So this Buzz is played by an actor in the Toy Story universe. I wonder if he has a sentient buzz lightyear toy…🤔
I LOVED Lightyear! I went into it with super low expectations but walked away thoroughly satisfied. The Number that is in my head is, 89%
Out of 100?!
I am happy that these guys are giving this movie a positive review because I saw it with my brother and we loved it. We were shocked to hear it didn’t do well.
Funny thing I thought of? This of all things could tie into the Pixar theory. The reason it seems more modern and such is because things advanced more, as the Incredibles showed that things advanced way quicker then in our world, them having modern-ish tech and culture in the 60s.
really loved this film. unfortunate that the box office wasn’t too hot cuz i would love to see more! hopefully it does well on disney plus.
I went in not expecting too much, was happily surprised. I quite enjoyed this movie! Also I liked that there were two post-credits scenes (well, more like mid-credit and then post-credit).
You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for this
When I first saw the trailers I was worried that Socks would be annoying.
You could say that #THISSOCKSISAMAZING! (Remember that line “#THESESOCKSAREAMAZING“)
I can tell they loved it because they’re sitting there just smiling the whole time.

I think he atleast can think becuz he tranquilizer darted old buzz "I bought you five minutes" and said he likes the new buzz better so no one told him to do that that's a choice he made.(I miss that sox)
The Zurg Ship looked like a big Claw, so I was expecting the aliens to pop out at some point.
The visuals were crazy good. Black levels, depth of field, and highlights were crazy.
Just watched it last night! Can't wait to see what you guys think??
So I thought this movie was ok for a Pixar movie.
Your video changed my opinion, now I want to watch it again and look for all the details yall pointed out.
