Seriously dude, I DON'T want to sound like the fanboy-turning-stalker kind of person but I don't think you actually understand how madly good you are at this. I watch tons of videos about filming technique and the way you describe it is second to none. I'd be willing to bet $100 that you surpass 100K subs before end of summer. And that guy across the street right now - that's NOT me. Nope. Totally someone else.
Totally agree with Matgeek. I've found myself binge watching you and one other guy to learn as much as I can. Your subs definitely don't reflect your skill.
So I was totally thinking the same thing. I feel a little stalker-ish commenting on like every video but... I love your videos and can't say how helpful you've been to me. You really do make the best videos!! Thank you for the time and effort you put into them and keep it up!! (I'm compiling a list of questions so that I can make the most of a consulting session with you!)
Hey Matt while I'm very knowledgeable with video gear, music instruments, eq, etc... I am not very knowledgeable in the film audio department. I need to buy a mic for the company I'm working for, and I was thinking of getting the tascam dr10l since everyone recommends it, but should I be concerned that I can't monitor audio? I need something for moving subjects and for speakers who don't want a boom pole in their face. But I've never used a lav mic before and the idea of not monitoring to see if the audio is catching shirt noise, kind of worries me. Should I buy this mic for my needs and is monitoring something I should be concerned about?
I've been shooting weddings since 2012 and I'm just now learning about the microphone sleeve thing for reception audio!? You're a god amongst men, Matt.
Matthew, you forgot to touch on the option of using the XLR output on speakers. And if all else fails, you can place a recorder on top of a speaker. Keep up the good work.
You are the second man (after myself) who found that the old olympus voice recorders are just perfect enough for weddings! They are so good for the church and other ceremonies. I actually have 4 of them DS-30, VN-711PC and 2x WS-811 and I bought them all on eBay (used). They are really amazing if you are looking for a low budget way to record a quality sound - good enough for a wedding.
hahahahaha i am rewatching this because i was smacked in the face this weekend with audio surprises. such as the mothers reading a letter in the middle of the ceremony and no one telling me that! so I am copying exactly what you do. but the funny part is you started this video out with your having a baby! haha and now you are! you spoke it into truth.
i don´t know how you do that. i think you´ve got lots of things to do, but your are able to answer all these questions. you love your work. you know how to teach people!!!!!!
The Olympus voice recorders that you were originally buying but are not made anymore are available on ebay, and you will pay, far, far less than a new recorder, and the recorder you get will likely be "like new" or actually new in an unopened package. I buy Sony voice recorders that were $80 - $125 new for only $15 from ebay. Ebay is our friend. But I've been looking for voice recorders that record in .wav format. I am glad to hear the ones you use do this.
Matt you are the bomb!! Thanks for being so generous and sharing such valuable information. It is a life saver and I think you've helped out a ton of people! It can be kind of intimidating recording audio from the mixer and if you ever get the chance it would be pretty amazing if you did a video showing us a scenario where you get a line out from the mixer, where you can typically find the tape out or Aux send outputs on a mixer and how you work with the DJ to test the audio levels and all that good stuff! I think this is something most of us struggle with at the beginning and I don't think there are too many, if any videos out there that actually show us a visual of how it's done. Thanks again :)
+Kiri Vawdrey thanks so much Kiri! A lot of this will come from talking to the DJ. Every sound board is different but if they are a good dj they should know where the recording out rca jacks are etc that you can plug into.
Hey, great video man, i would like ask you to make a behind scenes preparing everything because i have no idea about how you do things like where you position things, like what mic goes in the camera how you use the sound recorders, lights and everything.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos kind sir. I recently switched from Photographing weddings to filming them. That being said, it's been a huge learning curve for me and with all these people on RUclips lacking consistency and really great teaching skills, it was getting scary. I JUST found your videos and they are already helping me with more confidence in my shooting. Again, you're freaking rad and thank you for taking the time to help us beginners out! Keep it up bro.
Thanks Matt. We even have one more alternative to capture audio from the DJ: the most of them use amplified speakers, these always have an additional audio input that can be connected to our recorder. It's clean audio too.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's forgotten to press that damn button twice to start recording on the H4N. Luckily never at a wedding. Great video.
Your audio setup is not overkill at all. I have been recording local dance recitals and will tap a Zoom F8 into the sound board for clean music as as well as the MC microphone. I also run a few boundary mics off the front of the stage to wireless transmitters and to a Zoom H6 to accentuate the tap dances (the little tappers can get drowned out by the music) and I put another Zoom H6 with a Rode omni mic in the balcony to get audience applause, etc. I also record -12dB safety tracks on the all the recorders. Overall, I end up with a total of 12 audio tracks, 6 of which are duplicate -- not to mention the F8 can record to 2 SD cards at the same time so there is another 4 tracks too. Belt and suspenders, buddy! :) Awesome videos by the way!
I'm so glad to have found you. I appreciate how thorough you are. Even though the videos are long I know I'm learning the entire time and it never seems to drag. Keep up the great work man!
EXCELLENT content. I had a wedding where I rolled up to the dj hoping to take a feed off of his board during ceremony but he was using some fossil of a board. Only had stereo outs which gave super dirty signal, had to mess around splitting it and barely got set up in time. His wireless mics were also old and had constant interference. Basically an audio nightmare so thanks again for this excellent rundown.
I bought three Olympus digital recorders and placed one on the groom one at the podium one on the minister(which i didn't need). The audio was great. I also recorded the DJs wireless mics he had placed on the groom and podium. Mine came out better. I used gaffers tape on the lav mics to prevent noise from the mic against the fabric. Great videos
PSA: 1/4" connections are all fine and good, but know that there are TWO kinds. There is the one that you showed, with ONE insulator and two separate connector parts. Then there is the other type that has TWO insulators, and THREE metal rings on the connector. They are used for different things, and you should look them up to be sure of what they might be used in.
Lol that old h4n, I stopped using mine. You forgot to mention one of the biggest drawbacks is that it takes forever to turn on. Man, your setup is so really close to mine, it's like if you were talking about my gear and technics except me I'm using my c100 for statics and for XLR inputs. great videos man keep it going! !
Haha you're absolutely right. I think I got used to the longer startup time. I find that using a smaller SD card helps with the startup time too (32GB or less). Glad other people have similar setup to me! :)
I'm a short film maker and the ONLY 2 areas which I'm currently lacking in are Audio and Color Grading! Your videos have helped me cover the latter, looking forward to the audio sweetening so I can reach semi-professional nirvana and technical saturation at my level! :)
Great video Matt! I still use my H4n for weddings as well and ran into the issue with it draining batteries in less than an hour until I realized I had phantom power turned on. Switched it off and batteries last for a much longer time now.
I cannot get over that I have spent years not knowing the H4N has auto gain controls, hahahaha. Whoops. But seriously, your videos are fantastic. You seem so approachable and I love the way you teach! Thanks for the great content!
I just watched a couple of your wedding videos before and I was all tears although I DO NOT know those people and obviously I was not involved in those weddings.. BUT I thought wow the audio is fantastic and it is what actually touches the heart. Then I though it would be awesome if you made an audio tutorial/tips and you did it! How great! Thank you for sharing, you do an amazing job.
Awesome tips, Matt. And I think the mic-condom thing is a great idea. But I still think it is an absolute must to put a lav mic recorder on each speaker at the reception, as annoying and cumbersome as that is. I will often have someone awkwardly gesture with a handheld mic, or even hold it at a strange angle, nowhere near their mouth.
Thanks Bob! The Olympus recorder is pretty omnidirectional, so it will pick up audio decently even if it isn't right near the speaker's mouth. But if you have the lav mics and the time that is a definite option too.
Good stuff! I usually stick with my Zoom F4, but I’ll be switching to the Sound devices brand soon, as they are expensive, yet dominant with low SNR’s! Quick fun story: I once created a parabolic microphone using a trash can lid, and a lapel mic. It was a fun experiment and I wanted to try it on set for giggles. Some People laughed, until they realized how far of a range I was getting with clarity. I was even sitting next to the director, recording the vocals. Not the most ideal way to keep your job if your working with a tough director, but I had another boom operator just in case. The vocals came out good, but lost a bit of low end for those deep voiced actors. Again, it was all for experiment.
Hey Matt! Just wanted to say thanks for your VERY informative videos. You are awesome at what you do. Much appreciate the professional insight. Your are a true pro at what you do! Keep it up!
I've laved a bride before. To hold the receiver you can buy a $4 roll of Ace bandage at a CVS and wrap it around her ankle if she's okay with it. It was definitely a hassle so laving the groom is always most efficient.
Hey Matt, Look into a vampire clip for the bride, they are super small and will hook just inside of the dress so the capsule is peaking out the top. Quick to put on, invisible and reliable. They're pretty sharp so you gotta watch out though! PS can I send you a wedding video to review? haha Seriously tho.
+Thom Varey thanks so much Thom! I'll check this out :D Did you check out my consulting page at whoismatt.com/consulting ? I know it costs money, but I put a ton of time into my critiques, take notes etc, then we talk about how you can improve for an hour. :)
Thank you Matt! I just bought an a7s gen 1 and i was wondering how i can get clean audio without worring about wireless static. Thanks for sharing your experience and being open.
Very helpful, just starting out. I’m in that perpetual pre game preparation stage. I have the zoom h1n and two tascam dr10L.... your breakdown has given me multiple options to explore. Thanks
I just started watching your videos last week and they are AMAZING. Thank you. Also, couldn't help but smile when you mentioned forgetting to hit the RECORD button twice on the H4N. Done that myself and I felt like such an idiot. Thank you for mentioning that and helping me to feel slightly less air headed (should that be hyphenated?).
I loved this video! Planning on just using the mic sleeve and a recorder so I don't have to rely on other people! So much easier it seems. I am a beginner and this helped a ton. Can't wait to see the sweetening audio video!
Hi Matt, i just filmed a wedding today and your mic sleeve trick saved my ass. I was shooting solo and didnt have time to run to DJ and press record on the Zoom h6 connected to his mixer.. side note, i made the sleeve myself, cost =30mins 😀
Ooops...thought I had long ago subscribed. Now I'm going to make sure I get dutifully notified. Thanks again for your help making my techsavvy less grey. Definitely need advice on how to SYNC all the different audio sources.... I've been shooting (ice hockey games) four camera's at once and still haven't mastered the process. THANKS!!!
Haha thank you for subscribing! Have you checked out Pluraleyes by Red Giant Software yet? It will auto sync all your cameras and audio instantly. I use it for everything. :D
Very very good. A lot of wisdom and experience. We running a community training charity. Will love to get in touch. The way you put the relationships at the beginning is awesome.
Thank u. You should do a video on how u organise and transport your gear. Also, do u label things so if you have secondary shooters then they know where to find it etc. would love tips on this if u haven’t done a video of it already Triangle of power!
Matt, you and your videos are truly a treasure of info. Filled with good honest advice and reviews. So glad I subscribed to your channel and wish you the very best. Cheers, Pete
The H4n does not use batteries as fast as you say when you put it on STAMINA mode. In STAMINA mode I have use it on a film set for an entire 10 hour shoot. Of course it is not "recording" for 10 hours, but it is ON most of the time. Even when mine is not in STAMINA mode the batteries (Duracell) last about 5 or 6 hours. I don't know why you only get one hour out of it.
I mean, you mentioned it, so I gotta ask. What is the best LIGHT colored shirt to wear when filming a wedding to hide stains? I always used to wear black as a bus-boy/server, but that feels pretty tacky and downer for a wedding. Like: "Yep, THIS wedding ain't gonna last, so I'm wearing black to mourn in".
In weddings events, there are 2 things. One is DJ speakers, which are emitting the songs and DJ beats from their machine. And another is the voice of the speakers coming from wired mic or wireless mic of the event managers audio guys. How do you manage to record both ? Can we connect one Tascam DR05 or something to the DJ board with a 3.5mm to XLR cable and get both audio recorded exactly out of the box ?
Hello Matt. What do you think about H4N Pro for recording sound from the Dj's/band soundboard? Does it have auto-leveling? Can I just start recording and leave it for the entire wedding? P.S. YOU ARE AMAZING!
Hey Matt - curious about the DJI Mic and Board Audio. Is there a way to use the DJI mics with the board to get the audio from the wedding? Or do I need a zoom?
Hi Matt, very prepared with the audio. In terms of lavalier kits how do you feel about the rodelink kit for weddings? Obviously you'd need many receivers, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. Thanks for another helpful video!
Any comment on using the Zoom H6 instead of the H5? And (big question) do you “need” an additional “mixer” if you are using the H6? Not sure why? On a smaller scale, if you only have 4 to 6 mics, isn’t a Zoom enuff???
I just make sure the recording time is "ticking". My Tascams do the same thing. Press once and it's just monitoring then press again for recording. So just make sure the time indicator is actually increasing. :)
For picking up wireless mics off the board, some boards have an insert loop. A stereo plug with the tip and ring connected together (to return the audio to the channel as an insert) and with a 1/4 inch mono plug to your recorder permits picking up the single channel from the board. Often this is live even when the slider is down or the input is muted as this is often before the fader or mute switch. Adding this cable is less intimidating to most sound guys than a strange external box and extra cable in their signal path. Look for a 1/4 inch jack labeled insert on the channel used by the mic. This will be at line level. I have a set of these for use with a Zoom H6 when a set of mics are used. This gives 4 separate channels to pick from. You can use or mute any mic in post production. This works with most Allen and Heath, Mackie, Yamaha, Soundcraft, and larger Berhinger boards.
Seriously dude, I DON'T want to sound like the fanboy-turning-stalker kind of person but I don't think you actually understand how madly good you are at this. I watch tons of videos about filming technique and the way you describe it is second to none.

+Marvin Rodas hey Marvin! Great idea, I've done this before too and forgot to mention it. That works well!
Marvin Rodas its an xlr input?
Hi Mansa, the most amplified speakers has two XLR inputs, or combo (XLR - 1/4), you can use one.
Marvin Rodas Yes I've done this too, it is a great way to do it, and even reluctant DJs are usually willing to let you daisy off the speaker.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who's forgotten to press that damn button twice to start recording on the H4N. Luckily never at a wedding. Great video.

@@whoismatt Hey matt would you ever use a shotgun mic like the sennheiser 416 if you had one? or are lav mics better still for weddings?

What an amazing video. So pumped for this wedding I'm shooting Saturday! Thanks alot Matt🍻
I loved this video! Planning on just using the mic sleeve and a recorder so I don't have to rely on other people! So much easier it seems. I am a beginner and this helped a ton. Can't wait to see the sweetening audio video!
+HVFitTV glad to help! Planning on the sweetening video soon!

Matt WhoisMatt Johnson do you know of any photo or video expos in Texas this summer?
Amen to talking to vendors!
Solid tips, under rated channel.
+Dan Wahl thanks Dan!
Hi Matt, i just filmed a wedding today and your mic sleeve trick saved my ass. I was shooting solo and didnt have time to run to DJ and press record on the Zoom h6 connected to his mixer.. side note, i made the sleeve myself, cost =30mins 😀
@Lavish Agarwal Let me find out you used an actual condom
Very good video Matt. You gave me a few good ideas. 👍
+Indigo Hearts Productions glad to hear! 😄
Really great video man--thank you! Super helpful to hear when you use each of these tools.
Enjoyed the info...may take you upon consultation.
How do you capture the bride reading her letter before the ceremony?
Sennheiser G3 Lav mic on her outfit or dress running into a Zoom h5.
This video is gold.
+Curtis Zondag gooooooold! 😜
thank you Matt! I'm a young wedding videographer and i found this video so helpful!
Thanks Edoardo!
Thanks alot Matt. Really needed this.
Very very good. A lot of wisdom and experience. We running a community training charity. Will love to get in touch. The way you put the relationships at the beginning is awesome.
Hey man seriously, this is excellent!
Thanks for sharing some of your knowledge and helping me prepare for my initiation in filmming weddings.
Thank u. You should do a video on how u organise and transport your gear. Also, do u label things so if you have secondary shooters then they know where to find it etc. would love tips on this if u haven’t done a video of it already
Triangle of power!
really helpful video, I learned so much and now making a shopping list, thank you for making it
+David deLeon thanks David!
Matt can you please do an audio editing tutorial??? I think it can help many beginner wedding filmers like myself
+Joshua Archibald hey Joshua! Definitely planning on that in the future! 😁👍🏼
Like:
"Yep, THIS wedding ain't gonna last, so I'm wearing black to mourn in".
This video is very interesting, informative, and helpful to me, as usual ! Thanks a lot !
+1 to editing audio. Would love to see your process. I typically throw a [Broadcast press of] Multicompressor and a noise removal...
+Tyler Hanson haha you're already well on your way to audio sweetening! :) I feel like multicompressor is cheating sometimes it's so good.
Thank you so much Matt, your videos are always very helpful. Appreciate your effort
Fantastic video! I hope you will teach us how to sweeten the audio in another video! :D
+triceramovieboy thanks! Planning on it! 👍🏻
Hellow Sir, Can you do a Behind the scene on how and where you put your Audio Recorder and how would you put an recorder on a wired microphone?
In weddings events, there are 2 things. One is DJ speakers, which are emitting the songs and DJ beats from their machine. And another is the voice of the speakers coming from wired mic or wireless mic of the event managers audio guys.
How do you manage to record both ?
Can we connect one Tascam DR05 or something to the DJ board with a 3.5mm to XLR cable and get both audio recorded exactly out of the box ?
+Jetspot Networks lots of recorders! 😁 you could run two audio sources into a recorder easily (depending on the recorder)
first thanks for the brilliant video what length are the xlr cables and where do you place recorder to the camera thank you
Hello Matt. What do you think about H4N Pro for recording sound from the Dj's/band soundboard? Does it have auto-leveling? Can I just start recording and leave it for the entire wedding?
P.S. YOU ARE AMAZING!
Hey thanks! Yes the zoom h4n Pro would work well for that. Make sure you have enough batteries.
this was so helpful!! best video that i've watched for wedding audio. thank you so much
Hey Matt - curious about the DJI Mic and Board Audio. Is there a way to use the DJI mics with the board to get the audio from the wedding? Or do I need a zoom?
you can get white lapels for clipping onto brides.
This was SUPER helpful. Thank you!
Hey Matt!
How are you!?
When you going to do the video about how to improve audio editing!?
Love your tutorials, greetings from Uruguay!
Thanks Matt, a very instructive review !
+Phil eMotion thanks Phil! 😁
Hi Matt,
very prepared with the audio.
In terms of lavalier kits how do you feel about the rodelink kit for weddings? Obviously you'd need many receivers, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for another helpful video!
Thanks Nathaniel! I've heard mostly good reviews for the Rodelink overall, but don't have any experience with using it yet.
Any comment on using the Zoom H6 instead of the H5? And (big question) do you “need” an additional “mixer” if you are using the H6? Not sure why? On a smaller scale, if you only have 4 to 6 mics, isn’t a Zoom enuff???
Matt.... You're the man.
Awesome video Matt! Thank you for the advice!!
Thanks :D
Matt, do you use an attenuator with your h4n pro? Considering it only does consumer line level input when coming out of a mixer.
Yes I bring along an attenuator to use if I need it.
Great info. The audio sweetening video would be great!!
+André Barbosa Fotografia definitely planning on making it!
It's 2021...would you still recommend the H4n or H5 or would you recommend the H6 or something from Tascam?
I just make sure the recording time is "ticking". My Tascams do the same thing. Press once and it's just monitoring then press again for recording. So just make sure the time indicator is actually increasing. :)
+net poser (netposer) that's one way to do it 😁
Would you recommend using -20db attenuators as well? I can't imagine receptions speeches needing them but I could be wrong.
Nice to have if your audio is peaking
Hi Matt, if you had to choose to invest in just one, either the Zoom H4N recorder or the Zoom H5 for a wedding, what would you prefer?
+Laura Yanez hey Laura! I would go with the h4n pro. It's a really great recorder!
