    Fine words. Damon did not have the huge resources behind him many may assume came with the Hill name. It is testament to Frank that he saw the talent and drive in Damon and gave him the opportunity to become a world champion. But we all are indebted to Frank for what he did for the sport. Those days when individual passion could achieve so much are probably gone forever, but his name will be indelibly imprinted in the DNA of F1 for as long as it exists.

      @@RJSRdg to be fair Micheal Schumacher was untouchable in '94. He was band for two races, disqualified from two race, and retired from two races. The band and disqualifications were under dubious circumstances at best. Now keep in mind for the rest of the races Schumacher had two seconds and the rest were all victories. So who knows what he would have achieved he had not gotten the disqualifications or bands. Therefore had all things been equal Damon Hill would have nothing Schumacher. Do not get me wrong I like Hill I think he's a great champion. Keep in mind as well Hill also achieve being the first second generation driver to win WDC. The point I'm trying to make is fair is fair despite the fact that Schumacher ran Hill off the road. One has to ask themselves if they were in a similar situation there's probably a good chance that they would have done the same.

      Yes, correct.

    • @pjaylett
      @pjaylett 2 года назад +2

      @@Drenwickification It wasn’t that Mansell moaned about it. Mansell had a no.1 driver clause at Ferrari in 1990. They brought in Prost as number 1 despite Nigel having that clause. Fast forward to Williams, Frank assured Nigel that Prost wouldn’t join the team then signed him for ‘93, only telling him once the deal was done. Frank then falsely claimed that Senna was poised to replace him unless he agreed to the new terms despite Prost having a clause saying that Senna couldn’t join the team while he was there (due to the friction between them at McLaren). Once Nigel found out about the lies and broken promises, he quit. Adrian Newey was horrified at how Frank had handled this and insisted that Frank consult him on all future line up changes. Frank agreed (in a written contract) which he then broke at least twice.
      Damon, who has to be one of the nicest guys to ever grace the sport, was dropped after winning the championship for Heinz-Harald Frentzen and we all know how that turned out. I get it’s a business and some may say that Franks ruthlessness was what helped the team become the success that it was but I tend to lose respect for people who aren’t as good as their word.

    You had built a great racing team and for many, many years had the best cars on the grid.
    It is ironic to me that Damon Hill spoke here, even though he has the personality of a dish rag.
    A man, who even Sir Frank would not rehire for the 1997 season, after he won the world championship in 1996, and was forced to go to Arrows for the 1997 season. That should speak volumes to anyone who wanted to know about ol' Damon.
    The 90's were incredible for Williams Racing, with Prost, Mansell, Hill and Villeneuve all becoming world champions.
    Sadly, it is also the place where the greatest driver of all time, Ayrton Senna Da Silva lost his life on May 1st, 1994.

      Yes it was about money and Damon was NOT worth paying as a world champion for Frank and Jacques WAS, after he won the world championship in 1997 and he retained his Williams drive in 1998.
      He was the very last world champion that Williams had driving for them and sadly left, with his manager, Craig Pollack, to form the ill-fated British American Racing Team with Honda and never really had a kick at the can again in a competitive car.
      Dishrag Damon.
      He finished his career with Jordan in 1998 and 1999 - Hopes were high for 1999, but Hill did not enjoy a good season. Struggling with the newly introduced four-grooved tyres, he was outpaced by his new teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who was Hill's replacement at Williams two years prior. After a crash at the Canadian Grand Prix, Hill announced plans to retire from the sport at the end of the year, but after failing to finish the French Grand Prix that Frentzen won, he considered quitting the sport immediately. Yes, typical of someone who was not really worthy of an F1 drive to begin with, but perhaps, got this drive because of his family name.

    A great tribute, thank you Damon. I remember watching your father race at Goodwood, and of course, I was a great fan of yours. So, hearing your tribute to one of the greatest Team Owners in the sport’s history, really brought home the loss to F1.

    I was checking things in BBC sport homepage yesterday. Totally disrespectful that it didn't even end up on there. If it did it wasn't for long
